Kenosha’s lakefront has longserved as a gathering place forour vibrant community, home tofestivals, concerts, markets andcelebrations that bring residentsand visitors together. As these events continue to grow,so does the need for reliable infrastructure to support them. That’s why the city is moving forward with a project to installnew electrical service boxes inand around Celebration Place.Currently, many events in thisscenic area rely on portable generators to power stages, sound systems, food trucks and vendor tents. While generators have played animportant role, they can be noisy, less efficient, and require additional setup and fuel. This new investment, nearCalabria Way and Italiana Circle, will provide a more permanent, reliable and convenient powersource for event organizers. The project includes the installation of underground electrical conduit and wiring that will connect new serviceboxes in Celebration Place to 14 pedestal-mounted electrical junction boxes. These junctionswill accommodate both 120-voltand 240-volt connections, similarto the setup used successfully atHarborMarket. This upgrade will make it easierfor vendors and event coordinators to access powersafely and efficiently, whileenhancing the overall experience for attendees.Work is anticipated to begin inmid-May and is expected to takeapproximately 30 days to complete, weather permitting.Investments like this are aboutmore than infrastructure. They support the events and traditions that make Kenoshasuch a dynamic place to live, work and visit. That sense of community was onfull display during this year’s St.Patrick’s Day celebrations.Kenosha came alive in green asthousands gathered for theparade, the dyeing of the harborand the popular Guinness Beer Run. The energy and enthusiasm throughout the citywere outstanding.Families lined the streets, localorganizations showcased theircreativity and our downtown wasfilled with celebration. Events likethese highlight what makes Kenosha special: a strong senseof community and shared pride. These successes are the result ofdedicated work by city staff, publicsafety personnel, event organizers, volunteers, and localbusinesses. Their efforts ensurethese events remain safe, welcoming and enjoyable for all.As we look ahead, warmer weather brings an exciting lineupof summer events. From festivalsand markets to concerts and family-friendly activities along thelakefront and throughout ourneighborhoods, there will be plenty of opportunities to cometogether and celebrate.By Mayor David F. Family-owned businesses strengthen community tiesThe 5100 block of Sixth Avenue perfectly illustrates the family commitment to our Downtown communityIn an era dominated by large corporations and online shopping, family-owned businesses continue toshape the character of downtown Kenosha. They are more than storefronts—they aregathering places, sources of local pride, and a foundation of community life. For many families, running a small business is a shared effort that spans generations. Parents, children, and relatives often work side by side, combining skills while building somethingmeaningful together. This creates a welcoming atmosphere where customersare often greeted by familiar faces.Downtown Kenosha benefits from this personal approach. Family-owned shopsand restaurants tend to prioritize relationships over transactions. Owners learn customers’ names, remember preferences, and offer a level of service that larger businessesrarely match, helping build trust and asense of belonging. These businesses also strengthen thebroader community. They support localevents, participate in festivals and sidewalk sales, and contribute to the energy of downtown life. Their involvement helps create opportunities for residents to gather and connect.Family-run businesses also preserve the identity of downtown Kenosha. Each reflects the personality and values of the people behind it, offering something distinct from chain retailers. This variety attracts visitors and encourages residents to shop locally, supporting the local economy.Challenges remain, including long hours, competition, and economic pressure, but many families continuebecause of their deep ties to the community. Ultimately, these businessesare not just economic contributors — they are community builders who helpmake downtown Kenosha welcoming and distinct.Father/Son Rob & Jake Greskoviak of Villa D’CarloMike & Jenni Zoerner with daughters Emily & Katie Sturino of Magnolia Bridal.Father/Daughter Tony & Gianna Giorno of Red Line CyclesHusband/Wife Mick & Jeanette Kelly of Captain Mike’sFamily.qxp_Layout 1 4/20/26 9:22 AM Page 1

As we head into another vibrantsummer in Downtown Kenosha,I’m reminded of what makes thisdistrict so special… it’s not justthe restaurants, shops, lakefront, or events. It’s the peoplebehind them. The business owners, property owners, andcommunity members who continue to invest their time, energy, and ideas into makingdowntown a place we’re allproud of.The Downtown KenoshaBusiness Improvement District(BID) is, at its core, a volunteerboard. Every initiative, everymeeting, and every improvementyou see is driven by individualswho care deeply about the success and long-term vitality ofthis district. And while we’reproud of what’s been accomplished, there is still somuch opportunity ahead, especially when more voices arebrought to the table. One of the most exciting initiatives currently underway isour Alley Activation Program.Downtown Kenosha is filled withunique spaces that often gounderutilized: our alleys.Through this program, we’reworking to reimagine theseareas as vibrant, functionalextensions of our businessesand public spaces. Whether thatmeans outdoor dining, art installations, lighting improvements, or creative gatheringareas, the goal is simple: turn overlooked spaces intoexperiences. We’ve already begun collaborating with partners likethe City of Kenosha and KABA(Kenosha Area BusinessAlliance) to move this forward, but the success of this program, and many others, depends oninput and participation fromthose who know downtown best:you. This is where I want to extend agenuine invitation. If you are abusiness owner or propertyowner in Downtown Kenosha,we encourage you to getinvolved. Attend a BID meeting.Join one of our committees, whether it’s Business Support,Streets & Beautification, Eventsand Outreach, or BVIP. Thesecommittees are where ideastake shape and where realprogress happens. More importantly, they are where yourperspective can directly influence the future of downtown. We understand that time is valuable. Running a business ormanaging property comes withits own set of demands. Buteven a small amount of involvement can have a meaningful impact, not just onyour own business, but on thedistrict as a whole. A stronger, more collaborative downtownbenefits everyone. The BID doesn’t operate in avacuum. We work closely withthe City of Kenosha, KABA, VisitKenosha, and other communitypartners to align efforts andmaximize impact. That collaboration is critical, but it’sthe engagement from our localstakeholders that gives our workdirection and authenticity.Downtown Kenosha continues toevolve, and the energy we’reseeing right now is incrediblyencouraging. New businessesare opening, existing ones areexpanding, and more people arechoosing downtown as a destination. Our role as a BID isto support that momentum, tocreate an environment wherebusinesses can thrive andwhere visitors and residentsalike want to spend time. This summer, I encourage youto take that next step. Come toa meeting. Share your ideas. Be part of the conversation. The future of DowntownKenosha is something we’rebuilding together, and there’s aplace for you in that process.Let’s keep moving forward, together.By Jeanette Kelly, President, Lakeshore BusinessImprovement DistrictDowntown’s greatest asset: the peopleJeanette.qxp_Layout 1 4/20/26 8:03 AM Page 1Page 12 Downtown Kenosha 2026, Vol. 20 Issue #2 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

Kenosha is a city that knowshow to evolve. From itsindustrial roots to its lakefront renaissance, everychapter of our story hasbeen shaped by people whocared enough to plan ahead. Now, the City of Kenosha iswriting its next chapter: the2050 Comprehensive Plan, along-range roadmap that willguide how our communitygrows, invests, and thrivesover the next 25 years. If that sounds big, that’sbecause it is. But it’s alsosurprisingly down-to-earth.At its core, theComprehensive Plan is aboutanswering one simple question: What kind ofKenosha do we want to livein? And instead of guessing, the City is going straight tothe experts: the people wholive here. A community survey is already underway, and it’s just the beginning. There will also be communitystakeholder group meetings, public workshops, and plentyof opportunities for residentsto share ideas, concerns, and those “you know whatwe really need?” thoughtsthat usually pop up whileyou’re out for a walk or waiting for your coffee.Planning for 2050 isn’t aboutpredicting flying cars orrobots. It’s about preparingfor the real stuff: saferstreets, more housingoptions, stronger neighborhoods, better access toparks and the lakefront, anda downtown that keeps itscharm while welcoming newenergy. Cities change slowly, one decision at a time, and along-range plan helps makesure those decisions add upto something we actuallywant. The plan touches nearlyeverything: housing, transportation, economicdevelopment, historic preservation, parks, infrastructure, and the city's overall vibe. If it affects howwe live, work, move, or hangout, it’s on the table. And here’s the fun part: yourvoice genuinely matters.Whether you’ve lived hereforever or just discovered themagic of a Lake Michigansunrise, your perspectivehelps shape the city’s nextchapter. This is the momentto toss your ideas into themix: big dreams, small fixes, and everything in between. The 2050 ComprehensivePlan is more than a document. It’s Kenoshadeciding, together, what kindof place we want to be. It’s a commitment to thoughtful growth, to honoring our history whileembracing innovation, and tobuild a city that works foreveryone. Our story is stillbeing written, and right now,the community is holding thepen. If you would like to add yourvoice to the community survey or check out when publicworkshops are taking place, please visit the city development department webpage atwww.kenosha.org.By Abby Huff, CommunityDevelopment SpecialistKenosha’s 2050 Comprehensive Plan is shaping our futureLook Who’s Downtown!Abby Huff.qxp_Layout 1 4/20/26 8:00 AM Page 1Page 18 Downtown Kenosha 2026, Vol. 19 Issue #1 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

Downtown Kenosha grewquickly in the late nineteenth century. A fire in1860 that destroyedmuch of downtown gavethe area a reset—atragedy that may havehelped more than it hindered. Another major fireat the Allen Tannery in1890, just west of theFish Market building, ledto further structuralimprovements throughoutthe city.Kenosha’s harborbecame so prosperousthat it was countedalongside Chicago andMilwaukee as one of the“big three” harbors alongthe southwestern shoreof Lake Michigan. It bustled with importsand exports—goods andpeople alike. In 1898, a mysteriousagent named D. N.Meidel operated publicsteamship service on thesite now home to theAnsorge building. Hisvessel, the T.S. Faxton, left Kenosha everySunday morning at 9:45a.m. for a round trip toMilwaukee, with fares atfifty cents. Daily serviceto Chicago departedO’Donnell’s DockMonday throughSaturday at 5 p.m. Builtin 1874, the Faxton couldcarry between 500 and800 passengers.By the early twentiethcentury, downtownKenosha was a busyindustrial hub. Streetswere filled with streetcars, pedestrians, automobiles, and the occasional horse. Factoriesemployed hundreds, andbusinesses thrived. PikeCreek once extendedinto the city, requiringbridges near SixthAvenue and 52nd Streetbefore the area was filledin and the creek divertedunderground in 1959.What is now a scenicharbor view at 52ndStreet and Sixth Avenuewas once a small peninsula lined with businesses, known as GrandAvenue and North MainStreet. The surroundingneighborhood was densewith industry. A signalstation and laterO’Donnell’s Coal Dockstood along the harbor, while nearby factoriessuch as Allen Tannery,Bode Brothers Furniture, and Bain WagonCompany employed largenumbers of workers.Heavy dock trafficbrought a steady flow oftravelers, and duringProhibition, local “sodashops” operated byStanley Nadiez and JohnShimanauskas were raided for illegally sellingalcohol.By 1920, a confirmedstructure stood on thissite, home to theKenosha UpholsteringCompany. The two-storybuilding offered furnitureand slipcovers beforerelocating a year later toMain Street.William Ansorge soonarrived. Born in Oconto,Wisconsin, he had previously operated a hotel inWashington state beforepassing through Kenoshain 1921. Captivated bythe city, he returned withhis wife Elizabeth toopen a business near theSixth Avenue bridge. At the time, Kenoshawas well known for itsMichigan fruit trade, supported by the HillSteamship Company.Ansorge built a successful market selling freshproduce. In the fall of 1923, heopened the Ansorge FishMarket in the formerupholstery building. Around this time, the Chambersbrothers—Walter, Clifford(“Captain Cliff”), and Lloyd—cameto Kenosha from Door County.Clifford and Lloyd handled thedaily catches while Walter focusedon business. By 1925, they partnered with Ansorge to formAnsorge & Chambers Fish Market. The market offered fresh LakeMichigan fish as well as oysters, lobsters, and other seafood.Ansorge, known as “Fish ShantyBill,” continued to sell produce, including grapes, peaches, pears, and apples, along with occasionalspecialty meats. In 1927, plans were announced fora new building on the site—twostories tall (three on the harborside), with apartments above. Thecream-brick structure opened onNovember 16, 1928, under thename Kenosha Fisheries. The new facility included multipledepartments, a cafeteria, and theParis Grill. Equipped with modernfeatures such as a large icemachine, it became a central hubin a growing fish market districtalong the harbor.By the early 1930s, ownershipshifted. The Chambers brotherspurchased the building in 1931before William Fenner took over in1935, continuing both wholesaleand retail fish operations. The surrounding area became crowdedwith competing fish markets.Fenner remained until the mid1940s, when Walter Nesgoodopened Walter’s Fish and Seafoodin 1946. The Nesgood family livedin the upstairs flats while runningthe business until 1960, whenWalter sold the operation andbegan a career with AmericanMotors/Chrysler.One of the building’s most dramatic moments occurred in April 1959.Casmir Pawlowski, a photographeroperating Sixth Avenue Studios, was shot during a confrontationinvolving Roland Thomas.Pawlowski survived, and all parties later faced charges, ultimatelyreceiving probation.By the 1960s, the long-standingfish market era began to fade.Although fish operations continuedfor a time under Charles Cornell’sLakeside Fisheries, the districtofficially came to an end in 1970.Other short-lived businessespassed through the building duringthis transitional period. In 1966, a new chapter began withthe opening of World Wide Arts bythe Puntillo brothers and FrankPontillo. Drawing from extensivetravels, they filled the shop withartwork and objects from aroundthe world while also supportinglocal artists. In 1980, the Kenosha VisitingNurse Association moved into thebuilding, remaining for 17 years asit expanded its operations. Othertenants came and went, includingSouthport Rigging, which servedthe local boating community. Overtime, the surrounding harborfronttransformed dramatically, shiftingfrom industry to recreation andresidential development. At the turn of the century, thebuilding found new life as a community gathering place. In 2000,Harborside Common Groundsopened, quickly becoming a localfavorite. With its harbor views, outdoor deck, and rotating displays of local art, it served as ahub for conversation and community for more than two decades. When the coffee shop closed inAugust 2022, it marked the end ofan era. But the building did notremain empty for long. Later thatyear, Anna’s on the Lake opened, continuing the tradition of coffeeand community while adding afresh, modern feel. A multi-leveldeck, live music, and updatedinteriors helped establish it as a new destination along the waterfront. From steamships and fish marketsto coffee and conversation, thispiece of Downtown Kenosha hascontinually evolved. What wasonce a hardworking industrial sitehas become one of the city’s mostinviting gathering places. Thenames and businesses maychange, but the energy of the harbor—and the stories tied to it—continue to endure.By Jason Hedmancontinued from previous page1972Flashback 2 Annas.qxp_Layout 1 4/20/26 8:03 AM Page 2

The Kenosha Theater once stoodas one of Downtown Kenosha’smost prominent entertainmentlandmarks during the mid-20thcentury. Opening on September1, 1927, it was designed as agrand movie palace and state-ofthe-art theater, reflecting the golden age of cinema with ornatearchitectural details and a spacious auditorium that drewlarge crowds.Through the 1930s, ’40s, and’50s, the theater became a central gathering place for thecommunity. Residents flockedthere to see Hollywood’s latestfilms, newsreels, and live performances. Headliners includedFrank Sinatra, the Tommy DorseyBand, Bing Crosby, Nat KingCole, Harry James, LawrenceWelk, and many more stars of the era.The Kenosha Theater closed in1963 and, although downtownhas changed significantly, thebuilding remains a silent reminderof days gone by. Despite years of neglect, it is still in strong structural condition and considered a prime candidate for revitalization. As the community has evolved,so has the demand for live entertainment. Today, residentsoften travel to Chicago orMilwaukee to see nationally touring acts. Restoring theKenosha Theater would helpbring those performances back tothe city, reestablishing it as a stopon the national circuit. Its historicstage could once again host topperformers while also providingeducational opportunities for localyouth and supporting the continued rebirth of downtownKenosha. Those interested in supporting thetheater’s restoration—whetherfinancially or through volunteerefforts—can learn more atkenoshatheater.org.Can the Kenosha Theater return to its former glory? An upcoming fundraiser, thePublic Domain-A-Thon, will takeplace on Saturday, June 13, atthe Reuther Central HighSchool auditorium. This freeevent runs from 10am to 11pmand features 13 hours of classic films. Organized by Ole Johnson, the event encourages attendees to purchase drinks and raffle tickets to support the theater.Films scheduled includeNosferatu, The Circus, Little Shop of Horrors, Reefer Madness, Plan 9 fromOuter Space, Night of theLiving Dead, and House on Haunted Hill.Then.... and NowKenosha Theater.qxp_Layout 1 4/21/26 4:08 PM Page 1

On a quiet stretch just north of downtownKenosha, where Lake Michigan breezes driftthrough tree-lined streets, the brick building at4601 Sheridan Road feels like it has storiesbaked into its walls. Once a bakery in the early20th century, the space now houses LemonStreet Gallery & ArtSpace—a place where creativity doesn’t just hang on the walls, it humsthrough every corner of the building. The gallery began with a simple idea in 1998,when a handful of artists imagined a sharedspace where they could exhibit their work together. Within a year, that idea became reality, opening its doors in 1999 with just over a dozenartists. Today, it has grown into a thriving nonprofit collective representing dozens ofregional creators, all contributing to a constantlyevolving showcase of painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.Step inside, and the space feels alive withmotion—even when it’s quiet. Exhibits rotate regularly, ensuring that no two visits are quite thesame. One room might be filled with bold, contemporary pieces, while another offers delicateceramics shaped in the gallery’s own clay studiodownstairs. The building itself invites exploration:classrooms host workshops, artists chat with visitors during weekend hours, and every wallseems to offer a new perspective. But Lemon Street is more than a gallery—it’s ahub for connection. Through classes, communitypartnerships, and outreach programs, it works tomake art accessible beyond its walls. Local students come to learn, neighbors stop in forevents, and businesses throughout the area display rotating works through collaborative programs. The gallery’s mission isn’t just to display art, but to support artists as creators andentrepreneurs, helping them grow while enrichingthe cultural fabric of the city.Outside, colorful mosaics titled “Art is Life”stretch across the building’s exterior, a fittingdeclaration for what happens within. They serveas both invitation and promise: step inside, andyou’ll find a space shaped by imagination, sustained by community, and constantly renewing itself. In a city with a growing creativespirit, Lemon Street Gallery stands as bothanchor and spark—a place where art isn’t justseen, but shared.Appreciate the arts at Lemon StreetLemon Street.qxp_Layout 1 4/20/26 8:13 AM Page 1
