Page 4 HAPPENINGS June 1, 2023 www.hap2it.com Teresa Palmer said her new show, The Clearing, airing on Hulu, is about redemption. Palmer, 37, plays Freya, an Australian woman who escaped a cult with her son, but left another child behind. "It's such a redemption story," Palmer said in a recent Zoom interview. "You see her unpack a lot of that trauma and work through it. Ultimately, you realize that no matter where you come from, there's hope for healing." The Clearing is based on J.P. Pomare's book In the Clearing, which was inspired by the real Australian cult, The Family. Creators Matt Cameron and Elise McCredie invented a fictional cult for the series. Miranda Otto plays Adrienne, the cult leader who dresses all the children of her cult the same, with the same blond hair and makes them call her mother. Otto, 55, said playing a woman leading a cult eliminated a sexual component of many male cult leaders. "You read so much about the men and the relationships they had with all the women in the cult," Otto said. "Her whole thing is about mothering and that relationship, and how she corrupts that." Even though Freya escaped, the cult still tries to get her and her son back. It sends people to follow her, and sells her house out from under her. Freya is in the position of trying to keep her son safe, but also trying to protect him from the traumas she escaped. Meanwhile, Palmer said Freya still is triggered by reminders of the cult. "She's showing up for him and taking him to school and just doing all the normal mom things while being completely in a trauma cycle," Palmer said. "I'm not sure if she does a successful job or not of shielding him from it." Palmer said even Freya's interactions with other parents and teachers at her son's school are colored by her past trauma, and that the son can tell something is bothering his mother. "Kids are so perceptive that I'm sure he can pick up that she's acting a little erratically," Palmer said." In Adrienne's scenes with children of her cult, Otto said she explored degrees of warmth and coldness. Scenes with 16-year-old Julia Savage allowed Otto to show how manipulative Adrienne could be. "A lot of it was about making the person opposite you feel very, very special for a moment - and then taking it away," Otto said. Palmer and Otto said they were interested in cults before working on The Clearing. Palmer had listened to podcasts and specifically studied the NXIVM cult. Otto had a member of the Osho cult in her family, saying her aunt "just sort of fell out of it at a certain point." Palmer said that as difficult as the material of The Clearing was to portray, it reminded her that she was able to escape every time she left the set. She said she was thinking of the real people still trapped in cults. "They're still so deep in the suffering," Palmer said. "At the end of the day, I get to go back to my comfortable life. That was the hardest pill to swallow, I think, for me." Though the show fictionalized the cult, Otto said the manipulation of children still troubled her. "Children don't make the choices to be involved in these things," Otto said. "For these kids in the story to not have unconditional love, to not be loved in that way, is so pivotal and so hard to recover from. The nice thing is in this story we do get there in the end." New episodes of The Clearing premiere Wednesdays on Hulu. By Fred Topel Teresa Palmer plays a woman who escaped a cult in the new Hulu series "The Clearing." Teresa Palmer: Cult drama 'The Clearing' is 'a redemption story' Born Teresa Mary Palmer February 26, 1986 (age 37) Adelaide, South Australia Palmer told Interview that she came from “rather humble beginnings” and lived in public housing with her mother in Adelaide. Her first acting job was dressing up as a Strawberry Shortcake doll in her local shopping mall. Although she acted in numerous television commercials, Palmer looked into a career in animal rescue. But her dream of being an actress never wavered, and she began getting small roles in independent Australian films at age 19. In 2006, Palmer made her Hollywood feature film debut in the horror flick “The Grudge 2,” where she later described her character as the “bitchy schoolgirl.” She would go on to act with supporting roles in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” (2010), “Take Me Home Tonight” (2011), “Warm Bodies” (2013), “Point Break” (2015), and “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016). In 2018, Palmer landed a lead role as Diana in the British supernatural debris A Discovery of Witches. In November 2012, Palmer and friend Phoebe Tonkin launched the health and wellness website Your Zen Life. She co-founded a sister site to Your Zen Life called Your Zen Mama, with her friend, actress Sarah Wright. FYI Teresa Palmer

Page 6 HAPPENINGS June 1, 2023 www.hap2it.com The Irish seem born with a love of music. At social gatherings, everyone’s always ready to sing his or her "party piece." Performances are judged less by skill than by uninhibited sincerity or showmanship. Nearly every Irish household has some kind of musical instrument. That love is especially strong for traditional Irish music. You can hear it at cultural heritage centers and concert halls, but it sounds best in a pub. When I’m in Ireland, I walk around a pub-filled block like a guy choosing a dance partner, considering where I’ll stop to enjoy a pint and a tune. Live music is a weekly – and sometimes nightly – draw at most town pubs worth their salt. Trad music is especially popular in Dingle, Doolin, Galway, and Dublin. Pub music ranges from instrumental reels and jigs, to ballads of tragic love lost or heroic deeds done, to contemporary singalongs. It’s worth staying until the wee hours for the magical moment when a lament is sung to a hushed and attentive pub crowd. “Sessions” (musical evenings) may be advertised or impromptu. Often musicians just congregate and play for the love of it. There will generally be a fiddle, a flute or tin whistle, a guitar, a bodhrán (BO-run; goatskin drum), and maybe an accordion or mandolin. Music starts in the pubs between 9:30 and 10 p.m., finishing at about midnight. For a bar with a good reputation, get there before 9 p.m. if you want dinner or a place to sit, or pop in later and plan on standing. The music often comes in sets of three songs. The wind and string instruments embellish melody lines with lots of tight ornamentation. Whoever happens to be leading determines the next song. If they want to pass on the decision, it’s done with eye contact and a nod. A ceilidh (KAY-lee) is an evening of music and dance – an Irish hoedown. Percussion generally stays in the background. The bodhrán is played with a small, two-headed club. The performer’s hand stretches the skin to change the tone and pitch. You’ll sometimes be lucky enough to hear a set of bones crisply played. These are two cow ribs (boiled and dried) that are rattled in one hand like spoons or castanets, substituting for the sound of dancing shoes in olden days. Watch closely if a piper is playing. The Irish version of bagpipes, the uilleann (ILL-in) pipes are played by inflating the airbag (under the left elbow) with a bellows (under the right elbow) rather than with a mouthpiece like the Scottish Highland bagpipes. Uilleann is Gaelic for “elbow,” and the sound is more melodic than Highland pipes, with a wider range. The piper fingers his chanter like a flute to create individual notes, and uses the heel of his right hand to play chords on one of three regulator pipes. It takes amazing coordination to play this instrument well, and the sound can be haunting. Occasionally, the fast-paced music will stop, and one person will sing a lament. It may be a remnant of the ancient storytelling tradition of the bards whose influence died out when Gaelic culture waned 400 years ago. The stories – often of emigration to a faraway land, or a rebel death struggling against English rule – are always heartfelt. While you’re listening to a lament, study the faces in the crowd. The failure of electronic passport gates at major British points of entry on Saturday resulted in long lines of passengers at London airports as travelers voiced their displeasure on social media. The eGates system, operated by the Border Force within the British Home Office, is experiencing a "nationwide issue" which is "impacting a number of ports of entry," Heathrow Airport officials said in a passenger update. "Our teams are working closely with Border Force to help resolve the problem as quickly as possible and we have additional colleagues on hand to manage queues and provide passenger welfare. "We apologize for any impact this is having to passenger journeys," they added. A spokesman for Gatwick Airport south of London said the problems began late Friday and that by last Saturday morning the lines had began to shorten. "Our staff are working with U.K. Border Force -- who operate passport control including the egates -- to provide assistance to passengers where necessary," he told the Guardian. Photos posted on social media showed long lines at Heathrow during the busy travel bank holiday weekend, which is coming at the same time as half-term breaks for many British college students. "Nothing better than turning up to this at Heathrow T2 after a 10 hr overnight flight. Yet again endless queues to get through," wrote Twitter user Kev Dadfar. "We are aware of a technical nationwide border system issue affecting arrivals into the UK," Home Office officials said in a statement. "We are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible and are liaising with port operators and airlines to minimise disruption for travelers." The eGates system issues also struck at the British seaport of Dover, where roads leading to the busy English Channel ferry crossing to France were gridlocked last Saturday. Waiting times of 90 minutes at border control stations to board ferries heading to France were the norm, KentOnline reported. The latest disruptions came only hours after more than 20,000 passengers at Heathrow were affected when British Airways was hit by information system outages, forcing the cancelation of 175 flights. U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert sentenced Maxwell to six years in prison and five years of post-release supervision. Man 'ran out of gas,' won $1M lottery prize A Kentucky man said he won a $1 million lottery jackpot thanks to what initially seemed like an unlucky event -- he ran out of gas. Michael Schlemmer of Corbin told Lottery officials he just barely made it to the Convenient Food Mart in. "I ran out of gas, and I coasted in there," Schlemmer said. "I had $40 bucks on me and bought $20 worth of gas and bought a ticket." Schlemmer selected a $20 $1,000,000 Luck scratch-off ticket. "I scratched it off and I looked at it and went back in the store. I showed the girls that sold it to me, and they about had a fit. The owners of the store were there, and they both started grinning," the player recalled. The ticket was a $1 million top prize winner. Schlemmer said he will use some of his winnings to buy a new vehicle and the rest will go into savings. Graduating class features 12 sets of twins, one set of triplets A high school graduation ceremony in the Chicago suburbs drew attention for an unusual distinction: it included 12 sets of twins and one set of triplets. Vernon Hills High School featured 13 sets of multiples among its graduates. "I think the neat thing about twins, in general, is they can celebrate their uniqueness in one another while also having this special bond and special comradery," Vernon Hills High School principal John Guillemot, who is also a twin, told WGN-TV. The sets of multiples account for about 8% of the senior class who graduated. "This would be the first time publicly I'll be coming out and saying it, but I had throat cancer," the 76-year-old actor said on theMando & Friendspodcast. "I just finished getting through it. Dec. 20 was my last radiation. The week before, I'd finished my chemo and months and months I was on radiation and chemo as it attacked my throat." He lost 55 pounds because he couldn't eat during the ordeal, but is now swimming, rowing and lifting weights to get his strength back. Senior prank lists Maryland high school for sale on Zillow A Maryland high school was listed on Zillow for $42,069 in what school officials described as a senior prank. The listing, which briefly appeared on Zillow before being removed hours later, described the 12,458-square-foot Meade High School as a "halfworking jail." "All 15 bathrooms come with sewage issues," the listing stated. "There is a nice spacious kitchen and dining room, with a private basketball court!" The listing said the property comes with "complementary trash scented air freshener and water issues!" Bob Mosier, a spokesperson for Anne Arundel County Public Schools, called the listing "incredibly creative advertising." Mosier said school officials believe the listing was a prank by seniors. He said administrators are taking it in good humor. "No one was hurt, no property was damaged and it was very creative," he said. If you saw the listing and are hurt that it isn’t real, well don’t fret. A former high school in Oklahoma is listed for sale online as a singlefamily home with an asking price of $60,000, and this one is not a prank. The 17,408-square-foot building, originally built asBurbank High School in 1924, is listedon Zillowas a single-family home with five bedrooms, four bathrooms and one indoor basketball court. The high school closed in 1968. "There is plenty of opportunity to make this property your own," the listing states. "The large lot size and open floor plan provide endless opportunities. With some imagination, this could be the perfect home for you. The large lot size and open floor plan provide endless possibilities," the listing says. coast to coast Sargassum seaweed blob targeting Florida’s coast as health hazard Be cautious when heading to Florida's beaches this summer, an expert warned, as a 5,000-mile floating mass of sargassum seaweed has begun washing up on the state's shores. It can be low risk in some instances, but it also has the potential for triggering serious respiratory health issues. "The sargassum itself is not dangerous. It can have different jellyfish and sea creatures in it that could be a source of sting," said Dr. Sarah Shafer, medical toxicologist and an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. However, "once the sargassum washes up on the beach, in 48 hours it will start to break down and lose toxic gasses. As it decomposes, we have to worry about potential exposure to humans." Sargassum can decompose in one of several ways. It can release ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, which is toxic, she explained in a college news release. Even at low levels, hydrogen sulfide can produce the smell of rotten eggs. Yet when the gas reaches a certain level, humans can become "noseblind" and not smell it. This can be a concern in closed-off places where the gas is highly concentrated, such as in a sewer. For beach seaweed, asphyxiation is not a concern because it's not closed off. Still, she recommended paying attention to different smells when around seaweed this summer. Look for the smell of ammonia or rotten eggs, irritated eyes, nausea and soft tissue irritation if you touch a piece of seaweed with a higher concentration of hydrogen sulfide. Those most at risk are people who have asthma or another respiratory condition or live near the beach. Anyone with respiratory concerns should leave the area if they smell rotten eggs, Shafer advised. Edward James Olmos Fetty Wap

A new study suggests, however, that the middle step of radiation may be unnecessary for many older patients. Researchers looked at more than 1,300 women over the age of 65 who received a diagnosis of breast cancer. All had small, low-risk tumors. Half got radiation postsurgery; half did not. The overall survival rate was the same in both groups: 80%. One day later, the four mice given Streptococci alone were dead; the four who received penicillin were healthy. Oxford scientists Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and Norman Heatley had revived Alexander Fleming's work. They produced enough antibiotic to test by isolating the active ingredient from what Fleming had called "mold juice." Ten years before, Fleming's interest had waned when he found penicillin production to be difficult and the material unstable, without effect against some bacteria (cholera and bubonic plague) and ineffective given orally. Medical Myths Like foods, over-the-counter medications come with expiration dates. Like milk, the drugs don't turn bad the day after that expiration date. Federal law requires drug makers to stamp an expiration date on their products. The date represents the period of time after sale that the manufacturer guarantees full potency. Actual shelf life can be much longer. Studies have shown some drugs remain effective for years, but there are exceptions, such as antibiotics and insulin. A good rule of thumb is to pay attention to expiration dates of medications where even a small difference in dose and potency matters. Curtain Calls In May 2008, Isaiah Otieno, a student from Kenya attending the Cranbrook, British Columbia, campus of the College of the Rockies was strolling through a residential neighborhood when a helicopter passing overhead suffered mechanical failure and fell on him. Three persons on the helicopter were also killed. By Scott LaFee, Creators well news 051823 9755 76th Street, Unit 710 Pleasant Prairie, WI (262)577-5222 Offer valid 5/17/23 thru 6/17/23. Page 14 HAPPENINGS June 1, 2023 www.hap2it.com Saint X, the Hulu mystery about a teenager who dies on vacation, may be a parent's worst nightmare, but it also offered up loads of juicy emotional and psychological challenges for the cast to artistically explore. Having just wrapped up earlier this week, the eight-episode adaptation of Alexis Schaitkin's novel follows Ivy League university student Alison (West Duchovny) as she vacations with her wealthy parents, Mia and Bill (Betsy Brandt and Michael Park), and younger sister, Claire (Kenlee Townsend), at the luxurious Caribbean island resort at which Edwin (Jayden Elijah) works. Shortly after they strike up a flirtation, Alison goes missing and Edwin and his lifelong best friend, Gogo (Josh Bonzie), are called in for questioning. A media circus ensues. Alycia Debnam-Carey plays Claire, now known as Emily, as an adult documentary filmmaker trying to unravel the mystery of what happened to her sister on that fateful holiday 15 years earlier. "Grief, obviously, has so many phases," Park said about how Alison's family deals with the trauma of losing her in a recent Zoom interview. "You can form a tighter bond and circle the wagons and figure out how we're going to preserve our familial stand or you can fracture. Unfortunately, both take so much time and so much effort." Brandt added, "There is a line in the book that says, 'They were together in their aloneness, in their separateness.' I felt like we did that. They were there for each other and there was a lot of love and they supported each other, but it was almost kind of like parallel." She pointed to a scene in which Mia calls the adult Claire, who is living in New York, far away from her parents who are in San Francisco. The tension between mother and daughter is palpable. "I feel like you see in that moment that Mia thinks she is doing better than she is. You never get over it," Brandt said. "She talks about the moments that surprise her, that catch her off guard. I think every morning she's like, 'This is what I need to do to get through the day.'" The tragedy also takes its toll on Claire's relationship with her dad. "The communication was always there. We were always communicating. We were always teaching and learning from each other and helping each other out," Park said. "When Claire goes to move to New York as Emily, that's fractured, too," he added. "We see Mia constantly wanting to communicate and constantly wanting answers, and Bill is kind of a go-between with them, trying to do the right thing all the time -- and these are things they never had to worry about." Brandt was a fan of the novel and eager to see what showrunner Leila Gerstein would make of it. "Even though I read the book, it managed to surprise me in some ways," the actress said of the series. Gerstein said she loved the book, as well, but knew it had to be restructured if it was going to work as a TV drama. "The characters are really real. They are really flawed. The book presents itself as a mystery on an island about what happened to a young girl, but actually it's a commentary about race and class and gender and culture's obsession with dead White girls and tourism and grief," Gerstein said. "It's a meaningful dialogue." The biggest change between the book and the series is how they toggle back and forth between the past and present. "In the adaptation, we wove together these timelines, which in the book are more separated," Gerstein said. "We wove them together to inform the jury and put us on this march toward an eight-episode finale and growing the suspense and mystery and creating more of, 'Could it have been this person? Could it have been this person?'" By Karen Butler Betsy Brandt: 'Saint X' parents never get over daughter's death Betsy Brandt (L) and West Duchovny star in "Saint X." Binge alert! All eight episodes of the limited series "Saint X" are now available on Hulu

www.hap2it.com June 1, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 19 Lately I have been messing around with ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot destined to make our society even lazier than it is now. While reviews of ChatGPT have been mixed — Elon Musk called it ‘scary good” while professors and other humans not named Elon Musk fear students will never realize what it takes to write a term paper or thesis on their own — I’ll admit it is addicting. ChatGPT, for those not paying attention to the news this past year, produces detailed, usually correct, answers to questions about almost any topic. But unlike Alexa or Siri, which merely answers our queries, ChatGPT can compose poetry, suggest song lyrics and even become our personal therapist. In other words, it thinks, so we don’t have to. I recently asked ChatGPT for sightseeing destinations in Malta, a country I visited last week for the first time. It was only too happy to return eight suggestions, numbered and bulleted, featuring answers like “St. John’s Co-Cathedral: This stunning Baroque church in Valletta is one of Malta’s most iconic landmarks, with ornate decorations, stunning artworks and a rich history dating back to the 16th century.” There were no car rental or hotel ads cluttering the responses. Just information, plain and simple. Heck, I expected it to conclude by stating, “A reservation has been made and your credit card has been charged accordingly.” With answers like that, no wonder more than 100 million people are using ChatGPT, the majority being college students with term papers due tomorrow morning. Kids, Your Parents Don’t Know About ChatGPT…Yet Yet, like any new technology, I find myself thinking about what will be eliminated once this new, and easier way of doing things becomes the norm. For example, the cellular phone’s arrival meant the days of telling your kids that, as soon as they arrived at a party, to call from the house phone and let Mom and Dad know they had arrived safely, were gone forever. Now parents have no idea if their kids are telling the truth because that call can be made from anywhere. Unless the parents install tracking technology on their kids’ phones, which their kids can easily disable, which means… Oh, forget it. Which is why I become positively giddy when I engage in a task that brings me joy, and one that I know cannot be handled by a bot. Behold…the coin counting machine. For years I deposited my spare change in a glass goblet that I believe I won at a county fair sometime in the early 1980s. Twice a year, the goblet became full enough to necessitate a trip to my local bank, where I would hand it over and wait while a teller dumped the assortment of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters into a stainless-steel bin while I silently tried predicting the final tally. Although most banks have phased out coin counting machines, perhaps anticipating the eventual elimination of coins and cash in general, my bank went the other direction. The machine is now in the lobby, available to customers who enter with their goblets, Ziploc bags or simple handfuls of coins that will eventually be turned into bills… and some leftover coins. Will ChatGPT Make Me Rich? Not at this rate My last haul netted me $42.17, but I didn’t care about the amount. Instead, I remembered the days where my sister and I would excuse ourselves from restaurant dinner tables so we could sneak into the lobby and stick our fingers in pay phone change return slots, hoping somebody hung up and left without collecting change from their calls. A forgotten nickel or dime would bring squeals of delight. Found money tends to elicit that emotion. Obviously, I didn’t “find” the coins I brought to the bank but it “feels” that way when I watch change swirl in the machine as the digital counter increases. How much fun would a child have performing the same task? Parents, if you still give your children allowances for household chores — incidentally, ChatGPT says doing so is “a personal decision that will depend on a family’s individual circumstances and values” — please consider giving them coins as opposed to a Venmo notification. Let them dump those coins into a sorter and watch and listen to their efforts being rewarded. Trust me, you will see smiles of pure delight. Nothing artificial about that. Page 28 HAPPENINGS June 1, 2023 www.hap2it.com June 1, 2023 through June 7, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19)You may find safety hiding high above other people’s personal conflicts. Avoid the splash zone and when the dust settles, you may be able to find a more valuable position. Recognize your good fortunes and be grateful. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You might feel you understand what is going on, but unexpected changes may occur. It is up to you whether you choose to embrace the changes or reject them. The decisions you make can affect your future career or personal plans. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The pressure of taking on too many obligations from others may start to feel like walls built all around you. It can feel scary, but if you lessen your load by giving back some of the tasks, you can find a better footing to climb over. CANCER (June 21-July 22): While you may enjoy bargains it is important to remember to honor your debts. Some people may focus on the balance sheets without asking for an explanation. A first impression might be all you get so make sure to put your best foot forward. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Putting all your focus on a single project can bring impressive results. Letting an obsession overtake your life, however, could exhaust you mentally and physically. Take time for yourself when you can to relax and reflect. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Trying to hide your mistakes always means more trouble if/when they are revealed later on. Rip off the Band-Aid and share the truth quickly rather than hide it away. The people involved may appreciate your honesty. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Dreams can become reality if you are willing to put in the work and avoid taking shortcuts. If someone tries to hide something, you need to look past wishful thinking to focus on reality. An offer could melt away when you wake up. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You could be the biggest fish in your own little pond but might find yourself competing in the open ocean. Things may not be as easy as they were before. If you remain patient and keep learning, you can grow into your new environment. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Offer compliments before voicing criticism. When people feel like their accomplishments are recognized, they could be more willing to improve things that may not measure up. Spread praise to others and see how things can blossom. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): This is likely the time to buckle down and focus on your work. All the right people could be paying attention. This could mean a promotion or new opportunities may be on the table. Allow the world to recognize and reward your abilities. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Family members might try to draw you into their conflicts. Avoid being dogpiled and you could end up as the voice of reason when everything calms down. Keep a closer eye on your finances and expenditures in the coming week. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You may have reached a point when the usual strategies and tactics might not work as well as they used to. The impulse to be dishonest could appear but giving in would be a huge mistake. Remain sincere and honest to make progress.
