Page 4 HAPPENINGS April 20, 2023 www.hap2it.com Emmy-winning actress Alex Borstein says she hopes her Prime Video comedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel -- which kicked off its fifth and final season last week with a threeepisode premiere -- has changed the television landscape in its "own little, small way" forever. "The show not only has one beautiful woman at its heart -- but five, six, how many? -- really interesting, strong female characters leading the way. That is what I hope it's remembered for," Borstein said in a recent Zoom interview. "That and the Susie-Midge dynamic -- the whole show is about two women making their dreams come true and achieving the success that they want for themselves, not for how anyone else perceives it. That's really rare." Set in the late-1950s, early1960s New York City, the celebrated series follows the adventures of unconventional standup comedian Miriam "Midge" Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan, and her relentlessly supportive, brutally honest manager, Susie (Borstein). Michael Zegen plays Miriam's ex-husband, Joel, while Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle play her disappointed parents, Abe and Rose. Rounding out the cast are Alfie Fuller as Dinah, Susie's receptionist, and Kevin Pollak and Caroline Aaron as Moishe and Shirley, Joel's parents. Fuller thinks the show -- which finds humor in Midge's act, her family's horror at her life choices and Susie's outrageous tactics for getting her booked in clubs -- will stand the test of time, not just be forgotten as viewers sink into their next binge. "You can revisit it over and over and over again. It's just one of those classic shows that you can come back to year after year or let a few years pass and visit again, see things you haven't seen before or don't remember," Fuller said. "It still touches you in different ways, still makes you laugh. That's what I hope -- that 20 years later we will still be revisiting Maisel." The show exquisitely demonstrates the myriad ways women can be funny. "It's all of these women enduring the same experience in the 1950s of being a woman, and it oozes out in different ways," the actress added. "Shirley's character is really big and really bawdy, and yet she is very happy being at home, running her household, doing the books at the shop. She doesn't feel the need to get out there, stand on a stage and be seen. She feels seen in her own space." The actress said she expects Susie will stay with her forever. "I don't have a choice. She's in there and she's just a part of my makeup now," Borstein said. "There's probably a lot of me in her and her in me to begin with, but then it got even more squished together. It's a little mess inside me right now." One of the things she was most excited to explore this season before everything wrapped up was Susie's relationship with Dinah as they run a chaotic talent-management office. "Midge paved the way for Susie to trust another human being," Borstein said. "I don't know that Susie has ever done that without Midge and without that relationship, I don't think she would have been capable of letting Dinah in. She first hires her to be a secretary and take care of business, but, little by little, they kind of get under each other's skin and kind of become family." Susie also has some poignant moments with Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby), the brilliant, but troubled comedian who recognizes in Midge the same magic that Susie sees. "Everyone knows the Lenny Bruce story," Borstein said about the real-life trailblazer who died of a drug overdose in 1966 at age 40. "You know what's coming you know the future and, so, every scene always feels a little heavy, always feels precious," Borstein said. "How much time do you have with this guy? How much time do you have with this character? "There is one scene in particular when Susie got to speak with him when Midge can't, and that was a really moving, tough scene to do." All in all, Borstein is happy with how Susie's story ends in Maisel. "I think it's satisfying, but I also know -- remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books where you could choose different endings and paths? -- that's what's possible with all of these characters," Borstein said. By Karen Butler Born Alexandrea Borstein February 15, 1971 (age 52) Highland Park, Illinois Borstein spent her childhood in Deerfield, Illinois, before moving with her family to Los Angeles. After high school, she attended San Francisco State University, where she studied rhetoric. She honed her comedic chops at the ACME Comedy Theatre near Hollywood. While working in improvisational comedy, Borstein was scouted by talent agents and was selected to join the cast of “MADtv.” The new sketch comedy series was created for FOX to compete with Saturday Night Live. It debuted in October 1995 and Borstein joined the cast in 1997 and appeared in 44 sketches over five seasons. Her most memorable character was Ms Swan, an immigrant nail salon owner and manicurist. At “MADtv,” Borstein met Seth MacFarlane, who was pitching a new animated sitcom to FOX. MacFarlane was originally to create animated shorts for “MADtv,” but declined in favor of creating an independent series. MacFarlane cast Borstein to voice the character of family matriarch Lois Griffin on the hit sitcom “Family Guy.” Borstein had three different roles throughout the run of the WB drama Gilmore Girls. She portrayed Snookie in the pilot, but her MADtv contract prevented her to become a recurring character. She would return as the harpist Drella and later as stylist Miss Celine. In 2010, Borstein joined the staff of the Showtime series “Shameless” as a writer and supervising producer. She also guest starred in five episodes. At the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards, Borstein took home two trophies as she won for Outstanding Supporting Actress for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for “Family Guy.” FYI Alex Borstein Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan star in the Amazon Prime award-winning series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” - season five kicked off last week. Alex Borstein: 'Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' will be remembered for its funny, feisty females

Page 6 HAPPENINGS April 20, 2023 www.hap2it.com Gdansk, Poland's underrated gem Standing at the end of Gdańsk’s long wooden pier, I realize I can see two of the most important sites in 20th-century history: the spit of land where World War II began, and the shipyard where the Cold War started its long and gradual final act. Many people imagine this northern-Poland city to be a wasteland of rusted, smokebelching shipyards. But visitors are surprised to enjoy a much different experience in what is one of Europe’s most underrated destinations. Gdańsk boasts both an illustrious history and one of the most picturesque old quarters in Eastern Europe – and it shows it off delightfully. Gdańsk’s magnificent Main Town features block after block of red-brick churches and colorful, ornately decorated mansions. As one tourist gasped to me, “It’s like stepping into a Fabergé egg.” A stroll along the main drag, ulica Długa, allows you to soak in the city’s gorgeous architectural cancan. During the Golden Age, these eclectic homes (inspired by a wide range of people, including the Jews, Dutch, Italians, and Germans) were taxed based on frontage, so they were built skinny and deep. The widest houses belonged to the super-elite. This lovely street wasn’t always so lively and carefree. On September 1, 1939, Adolf Hitler invaded this once-German city, sparking World War II. By the end of the war, nearly 80 percent of the city had been destroyed, and the main street was in ruins. Locals stubbornly rebuilt their town with the help of detailed drawings and photographs, using the original brick whenever possible. Today, excursion boats ferry history buffs through shipyards to Westerplatte point, where the war’s first shots were fired. A short walk across town, you’ll find the Amber Museum, dedicated to the globby yellow stuff that’s sold all over the city. Almost 75 percent of the world’s amber – a fossilized tree resin – is mined in northern Poland, much of it washing up on beaches following winter storms. Visitors learn how amber comes in 300 distinct shades, from yellowishwhite to yellowish-black, opaque to transparent. The museum shows off amber clocks, amber chandeliers, amber beer steins, a model ship with delicate amber sails. There’s even an unfinished altar made entirely of amber at St. Bridget’s Church. If you’re interested in visiting a milk bar (bar mleczny), Bar Mleczny Neptun in the Main Town is the city’s most popular. Milk bars are governmentsubsidized cafeterias, a holdover from Poland’s communist days, when lowly workers could barely afford to eat out. Bar Mleczny Neptun has more charm than most milk bars, thanks to its outdoor seating along the most scenic stretch of the main drag. Load your tray with traditional Polish foods, such as borscht or pierogi, pay the cashier, and do a double take when you realize how little you spent. My bill for a full meal usually comes to about five dollars. Just 20 minutes north of the Main Town, the charms of the old core fade quickly as you come across the Gdańsk Shipyard. Here, in the place that Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa called the “cradle of freedom,” a motley collection of brave shipyard workers took on and ultimately ended the USSR’s stranglehold on Eastern Europe. In August 1980, a shipyard crane operator and known dissident was fired unceremoniously, sparking a strike. Upon hearing this news, Wałęsa – an electrician who had been fired for being an agitator – rushed to the shipyard and scaled the wall to get inside and rally the protesters. Near the shipyard, the excellent museum inside the European Solidarity Center is Europe’s single best sight about the end of communism. It’s made even more powerful by its location – in the very heart of the place where those events occurred. Exhibits tell the inspiring story of those workers and the difficult communist reality they were struggling to change. You’ll see original plywood panels onto which the strikers scrawled their 21 demands, then lashed to the gate. Just beyond that, a giant video screen and a map illustrate how the strikes that began here spread quickly across Poland. By Rick Steves travel Gorgeous facades line Gdansk's main drag, echoing the city's historic importance. United Airlines planning its firstever direct flights to New Zealand United Airlines said that, starting in December, it will be the first U.S.-based carrier to offer direct flights from California to New Zealand. United announced what it said was the largest expansion to the South Pacific from the U.S. mainland. Starting Dec. 1, the carrier will be the only one offering a direct flight to New Zealand. "Our strong partnerships with Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia provide unparalleled connectivity, and with our historic expansion across five destinations in New Zealand and Australia, United is the clear choice for customers' travel to the region," said Patrick Quayle, United's senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. With an estimated 66 flights to the region per week, including Australia, United said it will operate nearly 40% more flights to the South Pacific during the 2023-24 winter season in the Northern Hemisphere than last year. Apart from flights to Melbourne, United will carry passengers south using the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. For Melbourne, the carrier by October will have 100 more daily seats available for each departure on the Boeing 777-300ER. "Compared to winter 2019, United will offer 65% more seats to Melbourne," the company said. Airlines are struggling to recover from the travel restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration show 2.4 million people traveled through airport security on Monday, a 6.7% increase from year-ago levels, but 5.6% below the same date in 2019. Nevertheless, United turned in revenue of $12.4 billion during the fourth quarter, a 14% increase over the same period in 2019.

www.hap2it.com April 20, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Read This Now; Don't Wait No one thinks procrastinating is a good thing. Well, almost no one. But a new study shows how it really might not be good for your health and well-being. Researchers surveyed 3,525 college students, asking them to rate their tendency to procrastinate on a standard scale; then followed up every three months for a year, asking about mental health, disabling pain, tobacco, alcohol, poor sleep, cannabis use, loneliness and other woes. Students with higher baseline levels of procrastination experienced greater depression, anxiety, stress, pain, poor sleep, loneliness and financial trouble. Other studies have associated procrastination with poor health outcomes, but this is the first study to suggest that the problems were likely not the cause of procrastination. The Other Victims of Cancer A study in Denmark and Sweden reports that the spouses of cancer patients face an increased risk of experiencing a psychiatric disorder requiring hospitalization, such as depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and stressrelated disorders, compared to other spouses. The risk was 30% higher in the first year following diagnosis, but lingered around 14% higher for many subsequent years. Body of Knowledge How much you smell depends upon personal hygiene but how you smell depends on your genes (not the kind you wash). Swiss researchers say the body odors of identical twins are significantly more similar than the scents of unrelated people, primarily because identical twins are much more likely to produce the chemicals that comprise sweat and produce body odor in the same formulation. Get Me That, Stat! Most kindergarteners still get their recommended routine shots against 14 childhood diseases, but the number is dropping: 95% in the 2019-2020 school year; 94% in 2020-2021 and 93% in 2021-2022. That translated to approximately a quarter million children vulnerable to diseases such as measles, diphtheria, pertussis and more. Stories for the Waiting Room In 1900, military surgeon Walter Reed paid people willing to be bitten by yellow fever infected mosquitos $100 in gold ($3,500 today) to take part in experiments. They received an additional $100 if they became infected. At the time, yellow fever resulted in repeated, deadly epidemics. In 1878, for example, a seven-month epidemic in the Mississippi Valley killed 20,000. Famously, Reed worked with three other doctors, among them Jesse W. Lazear and James Carroll. Carroll was among the volunteers to be bitten. He recovered. Lazear was bitten too (perhaps unintentionally) and died. Reed continued his work in Cuba at a place dubbed Camp Lazear. Medical Myths Egg yolks get a bad rap, with some folks insisting that they are rich in "bad cholesterol." While egg whites are mostly protein, it's the egg yolk that is rich in vitamins and nutrients. And while they do contain so-called bad cholesterol, or LDL, it is not super abundant and it is countered by the presence of "good cholesterol," or HDL. Plus, there is ongoing debate about whether there is a healthy limit to daily cholesterol intake from food and how dietary cholesterol affects blood cholesterol. Research shows that when you get little cholesterol from food, your liver produces more because the body needs cholesterol to build cell membranes and produce hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Ig Nobel Apprised The Ig Nobel Prizes celebrate achievements that make people laugh, then think. A look at real science that's hard to take seriously, and even harder to ignore. In 1998, the Ig Nobel Prize in biology went to Peter Fong of Gettysburg College for contributing to the happiness of clams by giving them Prozac. (The well-known adage is actually "happy as a clam at high water." Fong's work refines the observation to "happy as a high clam.") Medical History This week in 2000, the dwarf mouse named Yoda was born. Four years later, Yoda was declared the world's oldest laboratory mouse produced without a low-calorie diet. A third smaller than an average mouse, Yoda lived with a larger female (Princess Leia) for protective body warmth in a lab at the University of Michigan Medical School Geriatrics Center. Yoda's strain was genetically modified to live longer, stay smaller and age more slowly than ordinary mice. Average mouse lifespan is approximately two years. Yoda died on April 22, 2004, at four years, 12 days, estimated to be roughly comparable to 136 human years. It even has it’s own unofficial holiday - April 20. The term “420” has long been a slang term for indulging in the seductive herb and it’s legend traces back to five high school students in 1971 San Rafael, California who would regularly meet up after school at 4:20 p.m. to meet up. When rebellion went mainstream in the 1960’s, smoking cannabis became an easy way to challenge authority. During their experimentation, young Americans realized that, contrary to the dire warnings at the time, cannabis would not ruin their lives. They realized what the medical professionals already knew: that while cannabis could be habit-forming, it was not addictive - and it was less physically damaging than alcohol. As the generations grew older, public opinion has changed in favor of legalization, overwhelmingly when it comes to medical assistance. In November 2022, Kenosha residents voted in a non-binding referendum in support of legalized marijuana. 71.9% voted “Yes” to the question: “Should marijuana be legalized for adult use, taxed, and regulated like alcohol?” It appears to be a question of when and not if when it comes to nationwide legalization. Page 12 HAPPENINGS April 20, 2023 www.hap2it.com On a recent midweek night, Noah Boice was one of the first people waiting in line outside the Majestic Theatre. He’s flown here from Detroit to see “The Phantom of the Opera.” After 35 years, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epochal musical wrapped up its historic run on Broadway last week. “I’ve wanted to see it ever since I was a little kid,” says the chef. “In high school I wanted to audition for ‘Phantom.’ I didn’t get the role, unfortunately, because I don’t have the voice.” Dressed for the occasion in a tartan suit that complements his red beard, he’s taking in the scene of his pilgrimage. Above the theater marquee, a digital billboard displays the most recognizable iconography on Broadway: a white mask next to a red rose. They symbolize the love story of a beautiful singer and a 19th-century musical genius who secludes himself because of his disfigured face. “Basically, the main story of it is don’t judge a book by its cover,” says Mr. Boice. “Phantom” will leave behind a formidable legacy. An early prototype of the megamusical, it helped transform Broadway into a magnet for overseas tourists. The Majestic opted to shutter “Phantom” due to slow ticket sales after the pandemic. Ironically, the announcement of the musical’s closing created a surge in demand that, as of mid-March, has made “Phantom” the highest grossing musical on Broadway. The original end date was pushed back from February to April 16. For its many fans – or Phans – the production’s enduring popularity comes down to its memorable melodies and a universally relatable story about whether true love is skin deep. “There’s just so many stories you hear at the stage door from people [about] the ways the show relates to them,” says Ben Crawford, who has played the titular character on Broadway since 2018, in a phone interview. “People who think they can resonate with the phantom if they feel different or they’re treated differently. There’s a connection there. So there’s a lot of things that people can personalize in the show.” Thirty-five years ago, Broadway audiences were predominantly locals from the New York area. As productions became more expensive to mount, the theater industry was eager to internationalize its audience. Cue the dramatic organ fanfare (DUHN dun dun dun DUHN) and enter “Phantom.” Mr. Lloyd Webber had already established himself a household name with mass appeal hits such as “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Evita,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” and “Cats.” “The Phantom of the Opera” eclipsed them all. The love duet “All I Ask of You” and “The Phantom of the Opera” – both Top 10 hits on the U.K. singles chart – are firmly embedded in millions of mental jukeboxes. It also spawned a 2004 movie version, starring Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler, as well as several cast recordings from various stage productions – including the very first one in London in 1986. Long before “The Lion King” roared on stage, “Phantom” employed Disney-like branding with a worldwide reach, says Elizabeth Wollman, author of “The Theater Will Rock: A History of the Rock Musical, from Hair to Hedwig.” In New York, where tourists accounted for 65% of prepandemic Broadway audiences, the $1.3 billion grosses for “Phantom” overall have only been surpassed by “Wicked” and “The Lion King.” To understand the longevity of “Phantom,” Dr. Wollman suggests putting yourself in the mind of a first-time visitor to Broadway: “I’m with my family. I don’t know New York very well. I want something that’s comfortable that I’ve heard of before, that I think we’re all going to understand. That’s not going to be too risqué for my children. That’s not going to bore me to tears.” Standing outside the Majestic, Zack and Sarah Inman from Bowling Green, Kentucky, are quick to praise Emilie Kouatchou, the first Black woman to play the role of Christine. “She was actually Christine when we saw it in 2021,” says Ms. Inman. The couple have lost count of how many times they’ve seen “Phantom” either on tour or here in New York. “Seven or eight,” says Ms. Inman. Attendees milling in the lobby have flown in from places like Massachusetts, Texas, and Missouri. The excited voices include Russian and Chinese tourists. The merch stand is doing robust business. Its memorabilia include a teddy bear dressed in a tuxedo, cape, and a mask – probably not the kind of thing one gives a toddler at bedtime. “There’s this intrigue to the character of the Phantom,” says Yacine Ndaw, a New Yorker who first saw the show when she was 13. She’s drawn to a story that’s as unpredictable as the moment when the Phantom suddenly appears on a gangway high above the audience. “You watch the whole show and you understand a little bit more who he is.” The masked character is a musical composer who’s been ostracized because of his facial deformity. Hiding in the catacombs of a Paris opera house, he demands that its new owners stage his latest work, “Faust.” He also insists that they cast a young singer, Christine, in the lead role. He’s infatuated with her. And he’s also jealous of Christine’s childhood friend, Raoul, who is wooing her. When things don’t go the Phantom’s way, he kills people. To some, the character is a troubling figure whose possessive stalking of Christine is abusive. Not to put too fine a point on it, but he is also a serial killer. At the climax of the show – spoiler alert – Christine tells the unmasked composer, “This haunted face holds no horror for me now. It’s in your soul that the true distortion lies.” In an act of kindness, she embraces him. He has a sort of revelation in that moment, it’s not the way he looks, but how he is, that makes him “unfit to live among us,” says Dr. Sternfeld, who is an associate professor of music at Chapman University in Orange, California. At a February performance, it wasn’t the famous scene of a crashing chandelier that threatened to bring the roof down. It’s the extended applause during the encores. Afterward, Tony Bacigalupo stands outside the theater chatting with his wife, Christina, about the performance. “I remember I leaned over to you at some point early on in the show and said, ‘Look, we’ve seen a lot of shows together, but this one is different,’” says Bacigalupo, a New Yorker. “They clearly were going for it. With this one, there was no holding back.” Ms. Bacigalupo marvels at how the Phantom made her root for him despite his crimes. She “happy cried” at the end. “For so many people, this got us into theater and wanting to come see more shows,” says the onetime college theater major. “It was nice to come and see it one last time and give it the respect it deserves.” By Stephen Humphries Broadway says goodbye to ‘Phantom’ after 35 years

The pharmacist is important to help people manage their medications and address their medicationrelated questions and concerns. Yet, patients and caregivers often are unsure what questions to ask their pharmacist or how to ask them. Man wins his second lottery jackpot of 2023 A North Carolina man scored a $1 million jackpot from a scratchoff lottery ticket just three months after winning $182,073 from a Cash 5 drawing. Cedric Bass of Kannapolis told officials he decided to stop at the Willow Oaks BP after visiting the nearby grocery store. "I got gas and the ticket from across the street," Bass said. He selected a $10 VIP Platinum scratch-off ticket and revealed a $1 million top prize. "I was just here in January," Bass told officials at lottery headquarters. "I won Cash 5." He collected a $182,073 after splitting the jackpot with another winner in the Jan. 6 drawing. Teens plead guilty in killing of teacher over bad grade Two Iowa teens pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the 2021 killing of their high school Spanish teacher. The body of 66-year-old Nohema Graber was discovered hidden under a tarp and wheelbarrow on Nov. 3, 2021. Willard Miller and Jeremy Goodale, who were 16 at the time of the slaying, separately withdrew not-guilty pleas. Prosecutors say Miller was upset about a poor grade in Graber's high school Spanish class and that he recruited Goodale to help kill her with a baseball bat. In his testimony, Goodale admitted that Miller purchased the bat used in the crime and recruited him to help in the killing and cover-up. According to his testimony, Goodale stood guard while Miller beat Graber with a baseball bat. Goodale eventually noticed that Graber was still alive and proceeded to beat her with the bat himself until she died, authorities said. The fact that both defendants were 16 at the time of the crime has spared them from the mandatory life sentence they could have faced had they been older. Stress, burnout, retirement push 100,000 nurses to quit during pandemic During the pandemic, nearly 100,000 U.S. registered nurses called it quits, a new survey shows. Why? A combination of stress, burnout and retirements created a perfect storm for the exodus. Even worse, another 610,000 registered nurses (RNs) said they had an "intent to leave" the workforce by 2027, citing those same reasons. And an additional 189,000 RNs younger than 40 reported similar intentions, the study from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) found. Put together, this means about one-fifth of the 4.5 million registered nurses nationally could leave the healthcare workforce in a short time period. The survey laid bare the pandemic's impact on nursing, and examined the personal and professional characteristics of nurses experiencing heightened workplace burnout and stress due to the pandemic. Among the findings: 62% of nurses sampled said they had an increase in workload during the pandemic; nearly 51% said they felt emotionally drained; and 56% said they felt used up. About 50% of nurses reported being fatigued; 45% said they were burned out; and 29% were at the end of their rope "a few times a week" or "every day." These concerns were most pronounced in nurses with 10 or fewer years of experience, according to the report. This drove an overall 3.3% decline in the U.S. nursing workforce in the past two years. Meanwhile, the number of licensed practical/vocational nurses, who generally work in long-term care settings, declined by nearly 34,000 since the beginning of the pandemic. Man's security camera records bear scare A North Carolina man's home security camera was recording when he was relaxing outside and came face to face with a black bear. David Oppenheimer of Asheville said his Ring camera alerted him to motion outside the house while he was relaxing in his outdoor recliner. The encounter was caught on video by the security camera. The footage shows the pair make eye contact and Oppenheimer clings to a pillow and freezes until the bear runs off. The resident said he believes the bear to be the same animal he has seen wandering around his house and raiding his bird feeder on previous occasions. "The bears here are very peaceful," he said. "This one just caught me off guard." Ford to import new Lincoln Nautilus from China Ford Motor's luxury Lincoln brand has announced it will import its first vehicle to the United States from China. The U.S. automaker unveiled its new Lincoln Nautilus and announced the 2024 midsize SUV will be produced in and imported from China. A $1.3 billion investment, to turn Ford's assembly plant in Ontario, Canada, into a new electric vehicle facility, has forced the automaker to build Lincoln's new vehicle somewhere else. "In this case, it's a good use of resources," said Stephanie Brinley, associate director of research at S&P Global Mobility. "Without importing, Lincoln does not get the product, and the brand needs products between now and when its EVs arrive." The 2024 Nautilus will go on sale in 2024 with a starting price of $51,810. Lincoln currently has four electric vehicles in the works and plans to electrify its entire fleet by 2030. coast to coast National Guardsman who applied to be hitman online hit with federal charges A member of the Tennessee Air National Guard who applied to be a hitman online has been hit with federal charges. Josiah Ernesto Garcia, 21, allegedly began searching for contract mercenary jobs online in mid-February when he came across the website rentahitman.com. Prosecutors noted that the website is a parody website that was originally created to advertise a cyber security startup company but received numerous inquiries about murder-for-hire services after the company failed. Garcia allegedly reached out to the website in February, hoping to be hired as a hitman. The website owner asked him to submit his resume and identification documents. The airman noted that he was a "marksman expert" who had been awarded "for not missing a single bullseye" on his military qualifying tests. Garcia has been a member of the Air National Guard since July 2021. In a follow-up email, Garcia added that he wanted the job because he had a baby on the way and wanted a job that "related" to his military experience of "shooting and killing the marked target." Under the direction of the FBI, the website owner responded to Garcia and notified him that a "field coordinator" would be in touch with him. An undercover FBI employee contacted Garcia by text message on April 3 and claimed to be a recruiter for Rent A Hitman seeking to schedule a phone interview, which was scheduled for April 5. During the fake job interview, the undercover FBI agent asked Garcia if his was in law enforcement and he responded that he was not but that he was an airman in the National Guard. Garcia was charged with use of interstate facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire and faced up to 10 years in prison if convicted. 2024 Lincoln Nautilus S o If It’s Not Live, You’re Not Living! SUNDAY APRIL 23, 2023 2 p.m. on FOX NASCAR Cup Series The “Big One” will certainly be on the lips and minds of NASCAR Cup drivers and their teams today at Talladega Superspeedway as they gear up for the GEICO 500. The 2.66-mile Alabama tri-oval’s wide straightaways often make for tightly-packed groups, frequently leading to multiple car pileups. That was certainly the case in last year’s race, when a second stage crash took out a number of cars. 6 p.m. on ESPN MLB Baseball Two teams that figure to battle for playoff berths in the National League come to loggerheads tonight at Oracle Park, where Thairo Estrada and the San Francisco Giants close out a fourgame series against Jeff McNeil and the New York Mets. After losing out in the Carlos Correa sweepstakes, the Giants were able to sign rehabbing ex-Mets slugger Michael Conforto as a consolation prize. The Mets also lost out on Correa but their offseason shopping spree landed them AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and Japanese pitching star Kodai Senga. 8 p.m. on PBS Sanditon on Masterpiece If you love petticoats and buckled shoes, life will feel a bit less rich as this British period drama based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel has its series finale. MONDAY APRIL 24, 2023 7 p.m. on TCM Movie: The Color Purple It’s been remade as a Broadway musical, but the original movie — whose big-time loss at the Academy Awards had a lot of folks seeing the color red — remains a great “watch” 22 years later. Oprah Winfrey gives a gut-wrenching supporting performance. 7:25 p.m. on FREE Movie: Dirty Dancing Filmmakers clearly hoped you’d have the time of your life — again — with this 2017 remake of the hugely popular 1987 movie that memorably teamed Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Laurence Fishburne hosts the new episode “The Hunt for Stolen Nazi Treasure.” 9 p.m. on ABC The Good Doctor Following a tense moment during surgery, it looks like Dr. Glassman (Richard Schiff) and Dr. Murphy’s (Freddie Highmore) relationship might be irreparably damaged. www.hap2it.com April 20, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 27 April 20, 2023 through April 26, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Watch over the irons you already have placed in the fire; this may not be the best time to add more. Impress people with your enthusiasm and persistence in the face of obstacles rather than changing course at the last minute. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Rise above the fray if you sense there is a battle going on between tradition and adopting the latest techniques. It might be time for you to update something, but it is not necessary to rush the change or disrupt everyone’s routines. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Other people’s ambitions or work schedules might dictate how you arrange your own calendar. You can learn something valuable about business policies and negotiations by listening to a close companion’s sound advice. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Power players may have one-track minds. Let tensions subside before you try to persuade a partner to listen to proposals. Put any plans to lay out convincing arguments or to get someone's attention to the side for now. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You can be a successful competitor without employing aggressive tactics. Play fair and by the rules to guarantee smooth sailing. Handle changes and unexpected events with poise and use them to your advantage. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Your spending money stash could evaporate if you give in to temptation. Keep expenses within the budget this week and avoid adding to your debt load. A levelheaded approach to managing your assets can pay off. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): A partner or loved one might offer some sound advice that opens your eyes to wiser choices or better business practices. Take intentions and goals seriously and let the universe reveal numerous ways to reach them. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Pack an extra bag of patience for your journey this week. Someone might disrupt your plans by changing their mind or taking unnecessary risks. You may have to act as the voice of reason in some tense situations. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your family or friends could be a source of comfort and reassurance. Do not act if you are tempted to make sizable investments of your time or money, wait to make purchases or launch projects for the time being. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Try to contain your ambitions to some degree if they come across as overly aggressive. Admit that there are circumstances beyond your control, and it can be easier to withstand the pressure to try to overperform. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Be enthusiastic about doing your very best, then be open to learning helpful lessons from any criticism you receive. Make sure to follow through on promises and make an effort to understand what is needed now. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You could be unaware of activities going on behind the scenes. Uphold the highest standards and your work can stand up to any examination. It would be best to hunker down and take care of your obligations now. Page 28 HAPPENINGS April 20, 2023 www.hap2it.com Alanis Morissette releases cover of 'Yellowjackets' theme Alanis Morissetteis back with new music. The 48-year-old singer-songwriter released a cover of "No Return," the theme song for the Showtime series Yellowjackets, last week. "No Return" was originally composed by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker, who write the music for the show. Morissette's version of "No Return" debuted during the opening credits in last week’s episode of the hit drama. The original theme song will return next week, with Morissette's version to appear at other points during the season. "I love the original version of 'No Return.' It's just a perfect song. It was a little daunting to be asked to reinterpret it but I see parallels between 'Yellowjackets' and my perspective while songwriting: the sheer intensity, that going for the jugular with no fear around going for the profane," Morissette said in a statement. Yellowjackets is a mystery thriller series centering on a girls' soccer team who must survive in the wilderness after a plane crash. The show takes place in two timelines -- in 1996 immediately after the crash, and 25 years later in 2021. Erykah Badu to launch 'Unfollow Me' tour Erykah Badu is going on tour in 2023.
