about the cover photo

with Samantha Vaughn
of Bird of Paradox Studios

Bird of Paradox Studios, located above The Lettering
Machine at 723 50th Street, was established in late
2018 by a husband and wife team, Joshua and Samantha
Vaughn, Joshua as a tattoo aritst specializing in portrait
work, and Sam with her beautiful photography. Initially
created as an outlet for their talents, BoPS has since
grown and aspires to further expand their artistic
avenues.

Being a private studio, it allows stronger focus on the
client and prevents major distractions from the artwork.
The studio befriends other establishments in the industry
and strays away from making art a competitive business.
The BoPS family continues to grow by bringing on artists
and supporters. Be sure to like Bird of Paradox Studios
on Facebook and contact them for your next tattoo or
photography needs.

At right, Samantha Vaughn and an alternate cover

DT2020-4
by Alexandria Binanti

All right, friends, I have

to say this article may be

a bit different than prior

issues. 2020 has been a

year of challenges.

Challenges to our health,

our economy, to our

beliefs and ideologies;

and even our govern-

ment systems have been

shaken. We have been a

battleground state fight-

ing for elections as if our

lives depend on it; we

were seen on TV as a

city ravaged with vio- photo via Instagram - thecoffeepotkenosha

lence and divisiveness, all while pandemic fears were a constant

worry for both our safety and our freedoms.

But the truth is, great and powerful things can and will take place

in this time. Our city is making a new history. And while I can say

there is still a lot of work to be done as a community, as a people,

and as a city, I can also say there is a lot of hope to be had.

This year has also seen an outpouring of love for our city. When

small businesses were shuttered by Covid-19 closures the shop

small movement grew stronger than ever, gift cards sales flooded,

and take-out/curbside trend became the new norm. When outdoor

dining was allowed, you filled those seats.

It was because of you that many of these small businesses could

survive. And then when the riots came, you were all here. You

cleaned our streets, you boarded up our buildings, painted mes-

sages of hope, donated time, resources, and materials. You came up

with concerts, merchandise, lemonade stands and books...so many

fundraising events all to donate to our recovery campaign. My organ-

ization was able to raise $300,000 dollars to repair damages in

Kenosha. And all of this was done through you.

I want to thank you for all you have done. You are what keeps us

all moving forward. Our city is in a season of change and we are invit-

ing you to be a part of it. Since March, 13 new businesses have

opened their doors, 3 businesses have expanded their footprint, and

we welcomed a new university to our downtown. As you look

through these pages, I come to you now asking for continued sup-

port. Please stop in to these small businesses with your masks to

make a purchase and show your downtown love. As it gets colder,

remember gift cards and takeout from your favorite restaurants. As

you keep your holiday purchases in mind, call your favorite shop to

ask them to pick out your stocking stuffers, splurge on those gift

cards for family and friends, shop childrens’ items that can be gift

wrapped, ask for boutique items, art and more.

When you are supporting these small businesses, you may not

realize it but you are a part of saving our downtown. Know that every

gift card you buy, every small purchase, every share on social media

supporting a local business you make... all of these efforts keep a

store alive, support a family, and give hope for a better tomorrow.

Obviously this is only one small impact on this season of change,

but with you here supporting us, we can keep working

towards making Kenosha the best place to work, play

and live for the future.

The Kenosha Public Museum is a natural sciences and fine and decorative arts museum.
Established in 1933, the Museum’s collections have grown to over 80,000, including
1,200 works in the fine arts collection. Exhibit programming includes mammoths, world cul-
tures, Native Americans, zoology, geology, fossils, and fine and decorative arts.

at Scoops 5711 Eighth Avenue

Scoops Ice Cream & Candy has been a local staple for a decade, and it’s not hard to see
why. Their incredible array of decadent desserts includes Wisconsin-made ice cream and
handcrafted cakes, and with vegan, no-sugar-added, and gluten-free options, there’s truly
something for everyone. And they mean everyone -- they have doggy frozen yogurt, too!

at Total Cyclery 5039 Sixth Avenue

Total Cyclery is a second-generation, family-owned bicycle shop in Kenosha,
Wisconsin. Marty Gauss started the shop in 1986 and ran it with his wife, Caroline, until
2014 when he passed it to his son, Robby. The Gauss family has been heavily involved
in Kenosha-area bicycle racing in all forms. Marty coached, wrenched and supported
local racers including his two sons for decades, while delivering great customer service
to anyone who walked through the door.

BoPS (Bird of Paradox Studios)
was established by a husband
and wife team, Joshua and
Samantha Vaughn. Initially creat-
ed as an outlet for their tattooing
and photography, BoPS has
since grown and aspires to fur-
ther expand their artistic
avenues. Being a private studio,
it allows stronger focus on the client and prevents major
distractions from the artwork. The studio befriends other
establishments in the industry and strays away from mak-
ing art a competitive business. The BoPS family continues
to grow by bringing on artists and supporters.
