My story

spent in the shop with my parents and the different staff

Our bunny drawings were another small business. While what you’re doing or selling

mostly the same for all small businesses. My mom always

business.

Copy Center is a local, small print shop that is here to help
with getting what you need on paper, be it posters, resumes,
pretty much any business-related form or envelope, even
something as simple as a shipping label.

We focus on having your job done in a timely manner and
help as much as we can to deliver what you’re picturing.
I grew up in this business so I have more experience than
someone my age should, and I can use it to help my
customers navigate their projects.

I believe carrying on the relationships with other local
businesses is most important. My parents established great
relationships with many people and companies, now I get to
carry on their work of helping Kenosha. I’ve seen other print
shops come and go over the last couple decades and with
changes in technology that’s just how it goes. Being located
in the heart of the Harborside/Downtown area is nice
too, we’ve been able to cater to other local businesses.
Location! Location! Location!

It’s looking like 2023 will see the return of Bowls and Books.
My mom was one of the original organizers and she
eventually became the driving force of the planning that has
gone into it over the years. I've had people step up and offer
to help bring the fundraiser for Lakeside Players back, now
that the risk or severity of COVID has lessened.

Q&A with Monica Karnes

LaMacchia Travel
618 55th St
262-656-8300

lamacchiatravel.com

Q. Can you give us a brief history of LaMacchia Travel?
A. It began with Eugenio LaMacchia in the late 1800’s,
a Kenosha business owner who owned a grocery store
which offered steamship travel for immigrants. The
LaMacchia Agency was officially started in 1931 by
Eugenio’s son Edmund. My husband Tom began
working for the family business in high school, and I
joined in 2009. We are fourth generation in the travel
business, a legacy that goes over 120 years.

Q. What do you love about Downtown Kenosha?
A. So many things! From the festivals, the markets,
the beauty of Lake Michigan and of course the other
business owners - we witness so much passion from
our Downtown neighbors.

Q. What can people expect when they book with
LaMacchia Travel?
A. Our team of advisors can provide the insight and
knowledge to make a good vacation a fantastic
vacation. We are accountable to you so if something
unfortunately goes wrong, we are here for you.

Q. What makes LaMacchia Travel stand out from
other travel agencies?
A. Our knowledge and service are truly unique.
Our team of advisors have traveled to different
corners of the world and are able to give firsthand
experiences. We have a legacy that needs to be kept
intact, all of our advisors are vested in the success
of your vacation.

Q. You and you husband seem to be the perfect team,
what are some of the challenges of working with
your significant other?
A. It can be very challenging with each of us having
different ideas, but all in all, when things get really
tough it is comforting knowing that we have each
other to navigate through difficult times. As a
collective married team, we are great partners
and we approached our business the same way
we do our marriage, equal partners.

It is always exciting to see businesses grow and Bellissima’s Boutique
change. One Downtown business has been doing just 5613 Sixth Ave
that over the past three years. (262) 551-1885

Originally located in the Uptown neighborhood, Open Tuesday - Sundays
Bellissima’s Boutique found themselves in need of a
new home following a fire in 2020. After over a year in
the Orpheum building Bellissima’s Boutique moved to
a larger space downtown at 5613 Sixth Ave. Now in a
1,950 square foot storefront, one side of the shop is
dedicated to clothing and fashion while the other side
is cosmetics, accessories, and handbags. Also available
are footwear, fun gifts, and even bath bombs!

Owner Krista Maurer refers to everyone who
works for her as a partner. One such partner is Krista’s
granddaughter, Jasiya Gaines. Jasiya is 15 years old
and has been calling the shots on purchasing, staging,
and operations. Marlana, Nina and Felicia, Krista’s
daughters, are also actively involved in the store’s
operations – consulting on fashion trends, cultural
marketing for the boutique, and creative ideas for
promotions and events. Krista refers to the strong
female team as the “Maurdashians!”

Watch for upcoming paint nights, vision board
evenings, and holiday events at Bellissima’s Boutique.

My story

By Stacy Juga

I got interested in this when selling items online
for a friend. She endorsed me to others and it just
grew from there. Many people ask me where the
name came from. The first actual place I had was
in a basement under Family Dollar so Vintage
Underground was born there.

When the time came for a retail storefront, I chose
Downtown Kenosha because of the community and
I want to do my part to build the area and make it
even stronger. One of my favorite parts of my job is
talking to people who stop in and being involved in
the community.

Vintage Underground is a shop where you can find
almost anything and if not, I can find it for you.
I love what I do and am passionate when it comes
to hunting for just the right items for the shop.
We are an eclectic mix of vintage and antique.
I always like to have different things that catch the
eye. One word to describe my business is welcoming.

The future is looking bright for Vintage
Underground, we are currently expand into the
shop space next door where we will offer vendor
spaces and a new business, Cool Vibes Laser Art,
will share the space - they create gorgeous
parametric furniture and other unique items.

Fear & Sunshine

“The Fear & Sunshine book series is a story of a little hippie girl
raising monsters and learning mad science. Think Harry Potter

started with drawings of random characters, got some inspiration
from real life, then, I had to figure out why a little hippie kid was
living in a mansion of mad science so I started writing.”

An Much More

“I’ve been working in self-publishing for over a decade, whether
on my own projects or helping others produce theirs. With the
shop, I’ve got a place where people starting their journey in
writing their own books can come and talk business and once
they publish their work, have the opportunity to get it out to
readers in Kenosha. Along with my own books and a giant pile
of used books, I carry a lot of local authors and many that I’ve
met along the way of working through self-publishing.
If you want to check out some of the indie books on the shelf,

We also have a whole Artist Alley section. Think mini-Comic Con

Appreciating art Downtown

Kenosha has a fantastic array of great artists,
and you can find their work at numerous locales
in Downtown Kenosha.

Lemon Street Gallery & Art Space has been a local
art staple for over 20 years. They offer a refreshing
art gallery experience with opening receptions,
public clay studio, classes, and art-centered events.

There are still two more events this season for the
Kenosha Art Market, at Union Park on September
18th and October 16th, from 10am-2pm. Shop
the park and visit dozens of local artists.

Check out local and regional art exhibits at
Anderson Arts Center, Kenosha Public Museum,
Nature’s Gallery, ArtWorks/Pencillarium,
and the Pollard Gallery.

If you are looking to create, pay a visit to Alpaca Art
or Hot Mess Studios, where you can make your own
masterpiece!
