Page 4 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com Dennis Quaid said his new movie, The Long Game, now playing at Marcus Renaissance Cinema in Sturtevant, is about much more than golf. The film tells the true story of Mexican-American golf caddies in 1955 who built their own golf course in Del Rio, Texas, when an exclusive country club would not let them play. "It's about the American dream," Quaid said in a recent interview. "It's about fitting in. It's an underdog story." Quaid plays Frank Mitchell, a member of the Del Rio Country Club. Frank gets high school superintendent JB Peña (Jay Hernandez) a meeting at the club, but it still won't allow a MexicanAmerican to join. The club will hire Mexican American students as caddies, but won't let them play on the course, either. Many of those caddies are students at Peña's school. After building their nine-hole course to practice, the students form a competitive golf team, the Mustangs. Frank uses his connections to help them enter tournaments, competing against teams from Del Rio Country Club. Quaid said the country club's resistance to the Mustangs gave The Long Game a lot of drama off the golf course. "Sports movies have a lot of drama," Quaid said. "I think sports movies have to be about something more than the sport. Otherwise, they'd just watch a game on television." Quaid is now a veteran of sports movies from football dramas Everybody's All American and Any Given Sunday to the true stories The Rookie, The Express and last year's The Hill. Quaid said films like The Rookie, about 35-year-old rookie pitcher Jim Morris, also were about more than baseball. "It was about second chances in life," Quaid said of The Rookie. The Mustangs entered the Texas State Championship in 1957. In 2012, the team was inducted into the Latino International Sports Hall of Fame for its performance in that championship. "Lo and behold, they won the Texas State Championship their very first year at the golf course that they couldn't play on," Quaid said. "That's a great American story to me, and it's time to tell it." Quaid said the Mustangs' perseverance set a positive example in a sport from which predominantly White authorities tried to exclude them. "This is one of the bricks that these boys put into the building that builds this big melting pot of America," Quaid said. "It's important to hold onto all of your singular culture and history because that's what makes America great." Though the Mustangs face racism on the course and in the country clubs, Quaid said The Long Game is not a story about racism. He said America has a history of fearing others, but also a history of people overcoming those fears. "We've come a long way and we may have a ways to go," Quaid said. "It's learning to live with each other and help each other." An avid daily golfer, Quaid said he would hit balls between takes on the set In the film, His character, Frank, focuses on coaching the Mustangs on their swings. Though Frank was an actual person in Del Rio, who served as a captain in World War II, commanding Peña, there was not much historical material to research about him. The Long Game is based on Humberto Garcia's account of events in his book, Mustang Miracle. Having played historical figures in sports movies and films like The Right Stuff and MIdway, Quaid said he attempts to find the unique point of view of each character. "No matter what the outside world might think of them, I tell them from their point of view because we don't look at ourselves as heroes or villains," he said. "Depending on the case, we're living inside our heads." In films like Wyatt Earp and The Alamo, Quaid played historical legends Doc Holliday and Sam Houston, respectively. He said he suspected those people would not have considered themselves legendary in their time. "I think they'd be quite surprised, to tell the truth, that they were remembered," Quaid said. The true story of The Long Game was not one with which Quaid was familiar before making the film. Learning the story, Quaid said it moved him. "It's the story of overcoming and wel- deserved overcoming," Quaid said. "It hits the heart." By Fred Topel Dennis Quaid: 'Long Game' is 'about the American dream' Dennis Quaid stars in the new film “The Long Game” born Dennis William Quaid April 9, 1954 (age 70) Houston, Texas Quaid is known for his starring roles in Breaking Away (1979), The Right Stuff (1983), The Big Easy (1986), Innerspace (1987), Great Balls of Fire! (1989), Dragonheart (1996), The Parent Trap (1998), Frequency (2000), The Rookie (2002), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), In Good Company (2004), Flight of the Phoenix (2004), Yours, Mine & Ours (2005), and Vantage Point (2008). In addition to acting, Quaid is a musician and plays with his band, the Sharks. He wrote and performed the song "Closer to You" in the film The Big Easy (1987). He also has a pilot's license and owned a Cessna Citation.[52] He is also a one-handicap golfer, and in 2005, he was named as the top golfer among the "Hollywood set" by Golf Digest magazine. FYI Dennis Quaid Dennis Quaid said playing former President Ronald Reagan was "the most challenging role of my whole life." The movie Reagan opens Aug. 30 in theaters. "Everybody knows him and I didn't want to just do an impersonation," Quaid said in a recent interview. Quaid said his research on Reagan suggested a different man than the public perceived, first as an actor and later as a politician. "For people who knew him, he had a very private side that was unknowable in a sense," Quaid said. "I think Nancy knew him better than anybody." Penelope Anne Miller plays former first lady Nancy Reagan in the film. Sean McNamara directs from Howard Klausner and Jonas McCord's script, which drew on two Paul Kengor books about Reagan. "We're talking about the great communicator," Quaid said. "He's a very complicated man, actually, in his simplicity." Ronald Reagan film highlights 'very private side,' star Dennis Quaid says

www.hap2it.com April 18, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Stories for the Waiting Room Napping is great. These great people were/are famous nappers. Coincidence? No. 1: Thomas Edison. The inventor of the lightbulb (insert asterisk) had the bright idea that sleep was counterproductive, and so he preferred to take periodic naps throughout the day and night. No. 2: Winston Churchill called naps "blessed oblivion." No. 3: Salvador Dali believed naps should be self-limiting and advised taking them while seated in a chair, lightly holding a heavy key in one dangling hand. Eventually, you drop the key and wake up. No. 4: Jimmy Buffett named his final album in 2023 after his grandfather's description of a nap: Equal Strain on All Parts. No. 5: Mikaela Shiffrin, Olympic gold medal skier, says she wakes up in the morning eagerly looking forward to her daily afternoon nap. Body of Knowledge An aspirin is reportedly 40% more effective if taken with a cup of hot chocolate rather than a glass of water. Anecdotally, some patients effectively relieve a migraine by soaking their feet in hot water. It is not known if this works using hot chocolate. Food for Thought Slim Jims are a ubiquitous packaged meat product found wherever, uh, people stand in line at cashier counters. They are comprised of 17 ingredients, which are listed on every plastic tube but are hard to read. As a public service, the ingredients are beef, pork, mechanically separated chicken, water, textured soy flour, corn syrup, salt and less than 2% of the following: natural flavors, dextrose, paprika and extractives of paprika, hydrolyzed soy protein, maltodextrin, lactic acid starter culture, barley malt extract, citric acid, soy lecithin and sodium nitrite. Beef and pork are selfexplanatory, but "mechanically separated chicken" sounds ominous — and it is, especially for the chicken (even dead). Mechanical separation is a process in which the chicken's soft tissues are separated from hard, inedible bones by passing it through a sieve under high pressure. The result is a batter-like paste that can still sometimes contain undesirable bits such as nerves, skin and organs. Besides gas station meat sticks, notes the website Mental Floss, the process is also used to make hot dogs and bologna. Best Medicine Q: What do you call a doctor who graduated at the bottom of his class? A: Doctor. Observation "Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome." — American writer Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) Medical History This week in 1981, the journal Nature published the longest scientific name in history. With 16,569 nucleotides, the systematic name for human mitochondrial DNA is 207,000 letters long. Self-Exam Q: Why is that particular piece of gym equipment called a "dumbbell"? A: The word was coined by Joseph Addison, an 18th century poet and politician who once scribed the line: "But chains or conquest, liberty or death." That prose likely inspired Patrick Henry's later famous quote: "Give me liberty or give me death." Back in Addison's day, gym weights did not exist. Instead, Addison used a rope-and-pulley system to lift and lower attached lead weights. It was similar to the mechanism used to ring church bells, but without producing any sound. Thus, they became known as "dumb bells." Curtain Calls In March 2017, palm oil farmer Akbar Salubiro, 25, became the first confirmed case of a snake swallowing an adult human when he was killed and consumed by a 23-foot-long reticulated python in West Sulawesi, Indonesia. The killing was confirmed when other farmers opened the snake, revealing Salubiro's body. Coincidentally, a second case happened in the same region the following year when another 23- foot-long reticulated python killed and swallowed a 54-year-old woman working in her vegetable garden. Page 6 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com Bakery asks customers to check for lost diamond The owner of a Kansas bakery is asking customers to eat their cookies carefully after she lost the $4,000 diamond from her ring in the dough. Dawn "Sis" Monroe, owner of Sis Sweets Cookies & Café in Leavenworth, said the diamond fell off the ring that has been on her finger for 36 years at some point while she was at the shop. "We kinda went back to the kitchen and looked around," Monroe told KMBC-TV. Monroe said she she fears the gem ended up in the cookie dough. "If you happened find it, I would forever be in debt if you would return it," she wrote on the business' Facebook page. Woman's string of luck culminates in $300,000 lottery prize A South Carolina woman's cascade of scratch-off lottery wins culminated in a $300,000 prize. The Midlands woman told South Carolina Education Lottery officials she won $100 from a scratch-off ticket and used $20 of her winnings to buy two more scratch-offs from the Pantry store on E. Columbia Avenue in Batesburg. The woman said she ended up winning her money back, so she decided to buy two more tickets. "I went out to my car to scratch them," she said. "And I was surprised." She ran back inside to use the store's scanner. A clerk asked her how much she had won, leading the woman to reply: "You can't pay me." The ticket, a Max Money scratch-off, was a $300,000 winner. The winner said most of her prize money will be saved for retirement. NBAs' Boban Marjanovic purposely misses free throws Serbian big man Boban Marjanovic gifted opposing fans a poultry-inspired prize during the Houston Rockets' season finale against the Los Angeles Clippers, purposely missing free throws to trigger a chicken sandwich giveaway. The peculiar sequence occurred with 4:44 remaining in the Rockets' 116-105 win in Los Angeles. While the missed free throws could have proved costly in the game's result, the Rockets were eliminated from playoff contention before tip-off. They finished the season 41-41. Marjanovic was fouled to trigger his trip to the free throw line. Clippers fans roared as he stepped into the area and eyed the rim, remembering the team's promotion that which results in a free chicken sandwich if an opposing player misses two consecutive free throws in the fourth quarter. Marjanovic, a 76% career free throw shooter, missed the first of his two attempts. He then realized that the crowd wanted him to miss the second so they could win the free sandwich. He pointed to himself and then back to the crowd, saying "I got you." The 7-foot-4 center then hit the front of the rim with his next attempt, resulting in a roar from the crowd. He then pointed back to the fans. Project to save Florida's 'Beer Can Island' offers partial ownership for $1,000 A small Florida key known as "Beer Can Island" due to the results of parties thrown in the sand is for sale -- and one prospective buyer is looking for partners to go in at $1,000 apiece. The 9-acre island, also known as Pine Key, is located near MacDill Air Force Base and Apollo Beach and was created in the 1940s as a result of dredging -- the process of relocating sand and other materials from construction sites. The island, which was planted with Australian pine trees to help prevent erosion, earned the nickname "Beer Can Island" due to being littered with empty beverage receptacles from decades of parties. Russell Loomis and three friends purchased the island in 2017, and cleared what he described to WKMG-TV as "300 or 400 bags worth of" trash from the property. The owners installed attractions including a giant slide, portable bathrooms and tiki bars to attract visitors. Loomis said the island project was successful for a time, but the owners decided to close the island earlier this year due to the long work hours required to maintain the island and costs from repairing damage done by Hurricane Idalia. The island was listed for more than $14 million, but one prospective buyer, Nick Lipidarov, announced a "Save Beer Can Island" project that would allow other members of the public to buy a stake in the land for just $1,000 each. Lipidarov said money pledged by participants is being kept in an escrow account and will be returned if his group fails to buy the island. coast to coast CDC investigating nearly 20 cases of people falling ill from counterfeit Botox The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is investigating nearly 20 reports of people experiencing adverse effects from injections of counterfeit Botox. The federal agency announced its investigation in a statement, saying at least 19 people in nine states have reported experiencing harmful reactions to injections of botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, from unlicensed or untrained individuals in nonhealthcare settings, including homes and spas. All 19 reported cases were women, the vast majority of whom said they received the injections for cosmetic purposes. Nine of them were hospitalized, of which four were treated with botulism antitoxin over worries that the botulinum toxin may have spread from the injection site, it said. Botulism is a rare though serious illness caused by a toxin that is produced by the same bacterium used in Botox and which attacks the body's nerves and could result in death. The CDC said the cases were reported in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee and Washington. Some of the issues the cases cited include blurry or double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, slurred speech, difficulty breathing, fatigue and generalized weakness. The CDC is urging those considering Botox to ask their provider if they are licensed and trained to perform the procedure and if the product they are using is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Page 8 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com Walton Goggins said he wanted to play The Ghoul in the new scifi series, Fallout, because he was able to explore who the character was before and after a nuclear apocalypse. Now streaming in its entirety on Prime Video, the video-game adaptation follows people who have been cocooned in luxury bunkers for years and now are forced out into the dangerous real world known as the "Wasteland," which is populated with mutants and bandits. The show was helmed by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, creators of Westworld, and costars Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten and Kyle MacLachlan. "The Ghoul is, in some ways, the poet Virgil in Dante's Inferno. He's the guide, if you will, through this irradiated hellscape that we find ourselves in," Goggins told reporters in a recent virtual press conference. "He is a bounty hunter, an iconic bounty hunter. He is pragmatic, he is ruthless, he has his own set of moral codes, and he has a wicked sense of humor. Much like me," the actor known for roles in Righteous Gemstones, Justified and The Shield said with a laugh. "No, he's a very, very, very complicated guy." Goggins said that to understand The Ghoul, one needs to know who he was before the war. "He had a name. His name was Cooper Howard, and he was a vastly different person than The Ghoul," Goggins said. "Over the course of the show, through his experience back in the world before the nuclear fallout, you will understand how the world was. And he is the bridge between both these worlds." Nolan said he wanted to helm the series because he was obsessed with the video-games. "I think it started, for me with Fallout 3, which devoured about a year of my life," Nolan added. "I was an aspiring young writer at that point. It almost derailed my entire career," he joked. "It's so ludicrously playable and fun. No, I mean, seriously, the games were just incredible." This is the second time in Nolan's career that he was able to create a new version of something he loved after working with his brother, writer-director Christopher Nolan, on the Dark Knight Batman films. "It's such a rare thing and such an unbelievable thing," he said of being able to reimagine an established property. Jonathan Nolan said he wanted to adapt Fallout because there was so much rich material to pull from. "One of the things that's so powerful about the Fallout series is that every game is a little different -- different characters, a different setting and a different look into this extraordinary universe," he said. Yellowjackets actress Purnell plays Lucy, a sheltered "Vault Dweller," in Fallout. "What excited me about playing her was that she is so innocent and so naive and obviously very privileged, as well," she said. It was exciting for me to start in that place." Purnell added: "She's essentially a newborn baby. She hasn't had any real-life experiences. All she knows is what she was taught and what she's read in books that she has in the vault. It's limited." Next alum Moten plays Maximus, who is part of the Brotherhood of Steel and someone who has lived his whole life in the Wasteland. "He has to have a certain type of moral ambiguity that is forced upon him, living in the world that he lives in, and where you go from there [is what is thrilling to explore] -- how you hold onto what is your unique, pure self, and how that changes, and how you discover what it is that you want," Moten said. One of the most challenging aspects of the production, according to Nolan, was recreating the games' "power armor" -- rare robots that are paired with people to protect them and help them carry heavy weapons. "On a technical level, the scope of the world and the power armor, in particular, was one of those things you go, 'Oh, how on earth are we going to do that? But we got there,'" Nolan said. Moten said every day on the show's set was a "new, fun challenge," but that was why he wanted to work on movies and television in the first place. "It's super-exciting as an actor to get the opportunity to show up to work to do outrageous things," he added. "We spend a lot of time doing things that are normal, or there's a mundane-ality to them," Moten said. "So, to get to trudge around the Wasteland with the power armor by my side is an experience in itself. "And getting to see our stunt performer, Adam [Shippey] in the full garb, and seeing the seas of people and crew on sets part for him -- that practical realness to it is really exciting." Nine of the 25 happiest cities were in California, including Huntington Beach, Garden Grove, San Diego, Glendale and Anaheim. Fremont (population 227,514) is located between No. 7 San Francisco Bay and No. 3 San Jose on the eastern side of the bay. It claimed the top spot, in part, for low rates of depression, long lifespans and roughly 80% of households with an income above $75,000 — a number sometimes seen as a threshold for a higher quality of life. Page 12 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com Helsinki and Tallinn are two great capitals in Northern Europe. Just 50 miles and a two-hour ferry ride apart, these two cities – facing each other across the Baltic Sea from their respective countries of Finland and Estonia – are not only neighbors, but soul sisters. Finns and Estonians share a similar history – first Swedish domination, then Russian, then independence after World War I. But while Finland held on to its freedom through the Cold War, Estonia was gobbled up by the expanding Soviet Empire and spent the decades after World War II under communism, regaining its freedom in 1991. Today both are enjoying good times as members of the European Union and share a common currency, the euro (Finland was one of the first countries to adopt the euro, in 1999). And both countries are members of NATO, with Finland joining the military alliance in 2023 for protection against a newly belligerent Russia. In spite of its Swedish roots, old Helsinki feels Russian. When the Russians took over Finland in 1809, they moved the capital to Helsinki and hired German architect Carl Ludvig Engel to model the city after their capital, St. Petersburg. This resulted in fine Neoclassical squares and stone buildings with white trim and columns. Because filming in Russia was not possible during the Cold War, movies like Gorky Park and Dr. Zhivago were actually filmed in Helsinki. Helsinki’s grand boulevard, the Esplanade, provides wide and inviting sidewalks for shoppers and a people-friendly park up the middle. At the top of the Esplanade is Market Square, Helsinki’s delightful harborfront plaza. The colorful outdoor market is worth a stop for perhaps the quickest, cheapest lunch in town. The salmon grills are a favorite. Everyone from the Finnish president to tourists stop by for a dash of local flavor. At the shore is a wooden deck with washing tables built out over the water. The city provides this for locals to clean their carpets. A good Saturday chore in summer is to bring the family carpet down to the harborfront, scrub it with seawater, and let it air-dry in the Baltic breeze. A short ferry ride takes you across the harbor to Helsinki’s most important sight: Suomenlinna Fortress. It was built by the Swedes with French financial support in the mid-1700s to counter Russia’s rise to power. Think of it as European superpower chess. The Russians made St. Petersburg their “eye on the West.” The French countered by moving a Swedish castle to Helsinki, stopping the Russian offensive – for the time being. These days the sleepy fortress serves as a popular park with scenic strolling paths. From Helsinki’s harbor, ferries zip across the Baltic to Tallinn. The trip is so easy that Finns routinely visit Tallinn to eat, drink, and shop more cheaply than at home. On summer weekends, the city virtually becomes a Finnish nightclub. Tallinn once consisted of two feuding medieval towns. Toompea – the upper town on a hill – was the seat of government ruling Estonia. The lower town was an independent city, a Hanseatic trading center filled with German, Danish, and Swedish merchants who hired Estonians to do their menial labor. At the center of the lower town is Town Hall Square, a marketplace through the centuries. The 15th-century town hall dominating the square is now a museum with city history exhibits; climbing its tower earns a commanding view. Like many tourist zones, Tallinn’s is a commercial gauntlet, with medieval theme restaurants and enthusiastic hawkers of ye olde taste treats. But just a couple of blocks away is, for me, the real attraction of Tallinn, where stillramshackle courtyards host inviting cafés and bistros serve organic cuisine in a chic patina of old-world-meets-new. Climbing the stairs from the lower old town into Toompea, you’ll notice that the architecture tells a story. For instance, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built by Russians in 1900. Facing the parliament building, it was clearly designed to flex Russian cultural muscles during a period of Estonian national revival. It’s a beautiful building, but most Estonians don’t like it. Near the cathedral, Tallinn’s Museum of Occupations and Freedom tells the history of Estonia under Soviet, then Nazi, and once again Soviet occupation. Artfully arranged suitcases are a reminder of people who fled the country, leaving everything behind. Prison doors evoke the countless lives lost in detention and deportation. Displays show how the Soviets used surveillance to kept Estonians in line and focus on the inhumane living conditions in occupied society, stories of Estonians living in exile, and ultimately independence and freedom. After suffering through a challenging 20th century, Tallinn has joined Helsinki as a vibrant and welcoming destination in the 21st. While both cities have their own story to tell, they also share a common heritage – and spirit of resilience. By Rick Steves Helsinki and Tallinn: Pearls of the Baltic travel Helsinki’s Suomenlinna Fortress – built by the Swedes in the 1700s as a bulwark against Russia’s rising power in the Baltic – is today a popular park sprinkled with picnic spots, footpaths, and old fortifications Authorities are searching for a missing crew member who went overboard last Friday from a Holland America cruise ship. Deputies with the Broward County Sheriff's Office Port Everglades District responded to a report of a missing crew member on the Rotterdam cruise ship. The ship was sailing eastward along the Florida Keys at the tail end of a six-night Caribbean cruise when the incident happened. Holland America in a statement said closed-circuit TV footage showed the crew member "purposefully" went overboard around 9:45 p.m. Friday. The crew member was noted missing when the ship docked at Fort Lauderdale Saturday. "All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the team member's family at this difficult time," the cruise line said in a statement. The sheriff's office homicide and crime scene units were dispatched to Port Everglades to investigate. The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting the search at sea for the crew member. Eugenio Derbez: 'Speedy Gonzales' movie fell apart because 'studios are afraid' Eugenio Derbez was set to voice the Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales in a movie announced in 2016. Eight years later, the movie still hasn't happened and Derbez doubts it will. "I feel that the studios are afraid that, nowadays, it's so politically incorrect," Derbez said in a Zoom interview for the new season of Acapulco. "I've been telling them constantly that we love Speedy Gonzales in Mexico." Speedy Gonzales was a Mexican mouse who wears a sombrero and speaks with a Spanish accent, though usually voiced by White actors like Mel Blanc and Billy West. Recently, Dino Andrade and Gabriel Iglesias voiced him. Derbez said he tried to convince Warner Bros. that Speedy was a positive character to Mexicans. The 2016 development, announced by Variety, came before themerger of Warner Bros. and Discovery communications, and even before AT&T briefly owned Time Warner. "The only ones offended are the Americans, but we love Speedy Gonzales," Derbez said. "He's smart. He outsmarts the cats. He's a hero. He gets cheese for his people. He's fast." Derbez said the project is on hold. Recently, Warner Bros. made another Looney Tunes movie, Coyote vs. Acme, that it has decided not to release. Like Coyote, a Speedy movie would have been a mix of animated characters and liveaction like Roger Rabbit. Page 22 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com How to tame wedding jitters Nerves are to be expected when getting married. It is exciting to be engaged and realize you have met that special someone with whom you want to share the rest of your life. But anxiety may creep in as the big day draws closer. A lot of planning goes into a wedding, and often the pressure that comes with trying to create the perfect day can overshadow feelings of love and excitement. That is when wedding jitters may crop up. Couples must recognize they're not alone if they feel a little uneasy as their wedding day draws closer. However, there are ways you can address and tame jitters both before and during the wedding. Step away from wedding-related tasks Chances are you have spent months with the wedding on your brain. In fact, it likely has consumed your daily life. Take a day or two to do something unrelated to the wedding, whether you're alone, with friends or with your future spouse. Attend a fun event, go out to dinner, queue up several movies for a night in, or take a small trip. Keep wedding details out of the picture while you're enjoying yourself. Forget about being perfect Wedding jitters often stem from being nervous about everything going to plan. You may put undue pressure on yourself to ensure everything is perfect. But perfection is impossible, and the sooner you accept that a thing or two will likely not work out, the less stressed you may feel. You'll be surrounded by family and friends who will help you roll with the punches, whether that's a torn hemline or a missing buffet item. Guests are here to celebrate you, not pass judgment. Discuss large changes to come Some couples feel jittery because they haven't spoken about all of the changes ahead. These can include relocation, merging of finances and whether or not children are in your future, among other things. Stress can be tamed if you take a break from wedding planning and discuss these important topics. Learn relaxation techniques Learning to relax is important when dealing with anxiety. There are many different relaxation techniques to explore. Some include meditation, yoga, deep-tissue massage, exercise, or immersing yourself in a peaceful spot outdoors. Some people turn to reading or other hobbies to relax. Do not look to alcohol or medication as an outlet to alleviate stress. Talk to someone If anxiety about the wedding is eating you up, consider speaking with a professional therapist or even a close friend or family member. Sometimes a new perspective is all you need to calm the jitters. Nervousness when planning a wedding is understandable. However, couples can take steps to tame jitters so they enjoy all that goes into tying the knot. Questions to ask before booking a photographer Various components combine to make weddings beautiful and memorable. Couples rely on photographers to capture the smiles and moments that helped make their events unique and to ensure the big day is remembered for years to come. The trusted wedding resource The Knot notes that an internal study found that, among 27,000 couples who got married in 2019, an average of $2,400 was spent on a wedding photographer to document their big day. Couples who want to find the best photographer for their wedding day can ask several questions before making their final decision. What style do you specialize in? Photographers may be able to shoot various styles of photos, but may specialize in a specific type. For example, some photographers specialize in photojournalism, while others may excel at portraiture. Going with a photographer who has the most expertise shooting the style you prefer will help produce the desired results. Who will be shooting my wedding? Certain photography studios have several photographers working under one roof. Just because you meet with one does not necessarily mean that photographer will be on site, unless it is specified in the contract. Have you ever worked at my venue before? Photographers may be familiar with several local wedding venues and houses of worship. A photographer who has experience working in the locations where couples will tie the knot and subsequently celebrate might produce the best results, but lack of experience with particular venues need not exclude other professionals. Can we see a full gallery of a recent wedding? According to Brides magazine, unlike an album or a highlight gallery, a full gallery provides a better sense of a photographer's style and attention to detail. Will photos be color balanced and retouched? Skilled photographers are capable of capturing winning photos. But photos can be enhanced further in the studio with retouching software to bring out specific effects. Some photographers will polish all proofs, while others only will work on the images ultimately ordered. Confirm retouching details before signing the contract. What's included in the photo packages? A detailed price list helps you compare one photographer to another and decide which elements are covered. Additional prints, having a photographer's assistant, ordering albums for the parents, or ordering a large framed print can alter costs significantly. Explore all prices to ensure you're getting the best value. In addition, consider how many hours of event coverage are included in the price. What is the payment timeline? Photographers may accept deposits for their services but expect a different timeline of payment. Some may require payment in full before the wedding, while others may offer a payment plan that includes a final payment when picking up proofs or albums. Wedding photography is one of the essential elements of a wedding and helps tell the story of couples' special day. Asking key questions can help couples find a photographer who will produce the desired results. your bridal guide

Page 24 HAPPENINGS April 18, 2024 www.hap2it.com Fun ways to utilize social media in your wedding Young couples tying the knot today grew up with social media, so it's no great surprise that so many want to utilize various platforms when planning their weddings. In fact, the Brides 2018 American Wedding Survey found that 87 percent of brides turned to the social media platform Pinterest for inspiration when planning their weddings. On the surface, modern wedding ceremonies and receptions may look similar to the nuptials of yesteryear. However, engaged couples have increasingly incorporated social media into their weddings, and the following are some fun and creative ways to embrace that trend. Create a social media photo booth Guests may take more pictures at modern weddings than the photographers who were hired to document the happy couple's big day from start to finish. Social media boards are digital screens that display social media walls. Live event social media boards collect and curate content from social media channels and display it on a single digital screen. Users, in this case a couple's guests, simply use a predetermined hashtag when posting photos and the images are then displayed on digital screens in real time. This can be a fun way to engage guests during the reception. Live stream the wedding Live streams became very popular during the pandemic, when couples getting married had to pare down their guest lists in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines. But live streams can continue to be used after the pandemic, as there will always be guests who can't make it to the wedding. Facebook Live was a go-to social media platform for live streaming weddings during the pandemic, and it can be utilized to involve loved ones in the festivities even if they can't be there in person. Live streaming via social media may be especially useful for couples who want to enjoy destination weddings, which tend to be small affairs due to travel constraints. Hashtag the wedding A couple-specific hashtag can serve as something akin to a wedding album, only it's one everyone can easily access via the couple's chosen social media platform. Encourage guests to hashtag photos from the wedding so everyone can have a good time looking back on the ceremony and reception once the day has come and gone. Plan with your party Social media can be as fun, inclusive and useful when planning the wedding as it can during the wedding itself. Brides and grooms can create their own private Pinterest boards and share them with the wedding party. Everyone can then use the private board to bounce ideas off each other. Couples can infuse a little fun into the Pinterest board by encouraging their groomsmen and bridesmaids to post outrageous outfit ideas or submit sing-along song requests to be played during the reception. Social media is a big part of modern couples' lives, so it makes sense for them to find fun ways to incorporate various platforms into their weddings. Novel gifts for bridesmaids Brides- and grooms-to-be select people who are near and dear to their hearts to be special parts of their momentous days. So the chance to participate in a friend's or family member's wedding is a great honor. A wedding party plays a key role in both the ceremony and reception. Participants do everything from helping couples make decisions to addressing invitations to providing emotional support. As so much is asked of the wedding party - particularly the maid/matron of honor and bridesmaids - it's customary to bestow gifts on those people who devoted so much time and effort to the wedding. These potential bridesmaid gifts can serve as a thoughtful and unique to way to thank bridesmaids for all that they've done. · Photo books: Gift the bridesmaids with photo books of carefully curated photographs taken throughout the wedding planning experience. Pepper the books with other photos, such as images of you with the bridesmaids at fun moments throughout your lives together. · Portrait wine or champagne glasses: Beverage glasses customized with the bridesmaids' likenesses painted or printed onto them make for great gifts. Bridesmaids will enjoy sipping their favorite drinks in special glasses for years to come. · Personalized phone cases: Who doesn't rely on their mobile phones these days? Treat your bridesmaids to something special with colorful phone cases with their names embossed or printed on the outsides. · Wellness or spa gift card: After all of the running around for the wedding, bridesmaids may need a little extra pampering. Gift cards to a local spa can fit the bill. · Birthstone jewelry: Necklaces, rings or earrings become that much more special when they're customized to the recipients. Purchase jewelry with your bridesmaids' birthstones so they'll be as unique as each woman. · Friendship bracelets: Gift each bridesmaid with beaded friendship bracelets that features all of the ladies' initials. Be sure to keep one for yourself, and you all can enjoy nights on the town showcasing your special bracelets. · Monogrammed robes or purses: A customized pocketbook, robe or another item bridesmaids will use every day can make for an extra-special item that will serve as a daily reminder of how much you appreciate them. Bridesmaid gifts are a great way for brides to thank their bridesmaids for all that they've done to make a couple's wedding day special.

www.hap2it.com April 18, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 27 How to give weddings a modern touch No two weddings are the same. Some couples go to great lengths to personalize their weddings, while others make a few minor tweaks to traditional components to make ceremonies and receptions more reflective of their style and the sentiments they hope to convey. Embracing modern trends is one way couples have looked to set their weddings apart from traditional ceremonies. There are no rules governing weddings, and that affords couples certain freedoms as they seek to incorporate a modern sensibility into the festivities. For example, couples can modernize certain components of their weddings while remaining loyal to more traditional elements, or they can fully embrace a modern aesthetic. That choice of how modern to make a wedding is up to the couple tying the knot, but the following are some ways to give weddings a modern touch. Leave a small carbon footprint Eco-conscious couples can embrace an environmentalist ethos when planning their weddings by doing everything they can to eliminate waste and promote conservation. Send electronic invitations and save-the-date cards in lieu of paper alternatives and choose a reception venue that serves only locally sourced food and beverages. In lieu of wedding favors, which tend to be individually wrapped, make a donation in guests' names to a local environmental group and share that information with loved ones. When picking a hotel for guests, find lodging that incorporates sustainability into its day-to-day operations. Retire certain traditions Couples need not feel pressured to incorporate traditions that no longer reflect modern sensibilities. It's up to couples to determine which traditions to retire, but customs like the garter toss and bouquet toss may no longer resonate with modern couples or their guests. In addition, brides who want to be walked down the aisle by both of their parents, as opposed to just their father, should not hesitate to do so. Look for a modern venue One of the most awe-inspiring ways to give a wedding a modern touch is to choose a venue that reflects a modern aesthetic. Vaulted ceilings, white walls and floor-toceiling windows can create a clean, modern feel. Outdoor ceremonies also can create a modern ambiance. Adjust your attire Black tuxedos and white wedding dresses are among the first things to come to mind when imagining traditional weddings. Couples can stay formal but embrace a more modern look by choosing more colorful tuxes for grooms and groomsmen and picking a wedding gown with a flair of color. Brides also can allow bridesmaids to pick their own bridesmaid dresses to expand the modern look even further. There's no shortage of ways for couples to give their weddings a modern touch. How to avoid wedding reception seating mistakes Weddings are great opportunities for people to gather and celebrate the melding of two families into one. Weddings are a melting pot, and while the ultimate goal is for all guests invited to mingle and have a good time, preexisting relationships may cause some wedding-day interactions to be strained. However, with careful planning and some best behavior on the parts of all involved, getting hitched can go off without a hitch. It's possible for guests who may have tumultuous pasts to keep the peace, but this also can be ensured through careful seating arrangements. This is just one factor couples need to consider when deciding where guests will sit and dine at receptions. It's important to avoid some common mistakes. Mistake #1: Not having a seating plan. Let guests sit where they want and chaos may ensue. People may think they're entitled to certain seats, may hop into seats vacated by someone getting up to use the restroom or any number of other scenarios. Seating arrangements also ensure everyone is accounted for across the room. Mistake #2: Seating families separately. Unless there are rifts between certain family members, it's best to seat parents and children at the same tables. Mistake #3: Trying to force new friendships. Avoid trying to figure out who will get along by creating a potpourri table. A cousin in a band will not necessarily want to sit next to your coworker who plays guitar simply because they have a shared love of music. A wedding is not the time to try to create new friendships. If it's meant to be, they'll connect in a more organic way. Mistake #4: The dreaded kids' table. Young children can probably get away with sitting at a dedicated kids' table, although it may mean their parents have to interrupt their experiences by checking on their kids throughout the night. A bigger faux pas is to sit teenagers or twentysomethings at the kids table even if they seem like youngsters to you. Set a strict cut-off age for a children's table. Mistake #5: Being too strict in seating. It's one thing to direct couples or singletons to specific tables, quite another to assign specific seats. Do not dictate exactly where at the table a guest should sit. Some people arrive early, others late, and it is up to them to work out how to arrange themselves at the table. Mistake #6: Failing to get family feedback. Always check with your parents and future in-laws as resources about how to seat certain guests. They'll likely know who will make the best table-mates, especially if couples are not familiar with everyone on the guest list. Mistake #7: Not being aware of disabilities or needs. Be conscious of guests' needs. An elderly relative may not be comfortable in front of the DJ table. A person in a wheelchair may need easy access to and from the reception room. It's important to be mindful of these special needs. A seating plan for wedding receptions is an important consideration so that every guest can feel comfortable.
