She is incapable ofaddressing it, of naming what iswrong,\" Kruger, 49, told UPI in arecent Zoom interview.\"There's a lot of, to me anyways, relatable struggles within her thatI can relate to. Obviously, I neverlived them out to that extreme, but I think it's so scary when youbecome a parent and we don't talkabout it enough,\" said the actress, who shares a 7-year-old daughterwith partner Norman Reedus.\"I've had a couple of girlfriends inmy circle who were dealing withissues like that and I remembernot understanding what wasgoing on and, looking in from theoutside, it almost felt like myfriends were being taken awayfrom me. I couldn't understandwhat was wrong and, so, to getthe opportunity to sort of try tounderstand and lean into that, itfelt very cathartic.\"Streaming on Paramount+, thesix-episode British series is basedon Sarah Vaughan's bestsellingbook. It looks at how the friendships ofJess (Kruger), Liz (Jo Joyner),Charlotte (Shelley Conn) andMel (Emily Taaffe) are testedwhen Jess brings her babydaughter to the hospital with askull fracture she cannot explainand emergency room doctor Lizreports the injury to theauthorities.\"When I got the first three scripts, they were real page-turners, Icouldn't put them down,\" Krugersaid.\"I love a show that's a'whodunnit,' and I really don'tknow, and it's well-written, so Idon't know,\" she added. \"Andthen, of course, [I wanted] theopportunity to dive into such animportant female mental healthcrisis when it comes topostpartum and the journey ofmotherhood.\"The show depicts the moms andtheir spouses bonding through abirth-preparation class, remainingclose for years, then drifting apartas their parenting styles differedand kids' interests changed. The women are seen as incrediblysupportive of each other, but alsocompetitive and judgmental attimes.\"I think it's very realistic. I foundthat most things in the show, when it comes to those subjects, are very well written -- therelationships, what it means tohave a child, what it means foryour partner and you, that feelingof being overwhelmed withdifferent types of parenting,\"Kruger said.\"I thought that was reallyinteresting. I love that all the fourwomen came from differentsocial backgrounds and differentwalks of life,\" she added. \"Therewas just a universal truthfulness,an honesty, I thought, and that'srefreshing to see. It wasn'tglanced over or made pretty.\"The actress doesn't think mothers'attempts to protect their childrenfrom life's unpleasantness --sometimes even striving for theunattainable goal of perfection --are uniquely 21st centurychallenges.\"I think that's always been like it,\"she said.\"I don't know for sure. But when Isee my mom and what she wentthrough as a single mom andtrying to make ends meet andtrying to not put that on us andwhat she must have gone through-- she's never said anything to me-- but now that I'm older and, notthat I have the same struggles, but, I recognize it. So, I can onlyimagine what that was like for mygrandmother's generation.\"Because the role was such anintense one, Kruger was eager tolet it go at the end of the day.\"It was great to come home atnight,\" she recalled.\"It was summer, so my daughterwas with me, and coming homefelt like coming back to heaven, just to have a happy, smiling face.It felt really good, but it was avery exhausting shoot.\"I'm not ready to go back to dothat quite soon,\" she laughed.By Karen ButlerShelley Conn, Jo Joyner, Diane Kruger, and Emily Taaffe in Little Disasters (2025)BornDiane HeidkrügerJuly 15, 1976 (age 49)Algermissen, Lower Saxony, West GermanyAs a teenager, she studied ballet atLondon’s prestigious Royal BalletSchool until a knee injury ended hercareer.Kruger won the Miss Germany title in1992, which helped launch hermodeling career. He tried, but hedidn't,\" he said. \"At the same time, they are all they have left. They'reall they've got.\"Airing Sundays on Paramount+,the Taylor Sheridan-producedseries follows Mike McLusky(Jeremy Renner), the powerfulliaison between police, criminalsand the prison of a Michigan townwhere everyone has ties to at leastone of the three.Handley plays Mike's youngerbrother Kyle, a police detectivesentenced to prison time forshooting a dirty cop who was aboutto murder someone in cold blood.MIke tries to organize protectionfor his brother inside the prisonwalls, but is only barely able tokeep him alive.Richard Brake plays Merle, thesociopath housed in the cell nextdoor, manipulating Kyle everychance he gets because he has agrudge against Mike.\"A hurricane hits him out ofnowhere,\" Handley explained.\"He's really out of sorts and then hehears a friendly voice on the otherside of the wall. Kyle gets kind ofspun in his web and as theinformation kind of gets to him thatit's Merle, terror sets in becauseMerle has the lore being just theworst human ever,\" he added. \"Youhear about how evil Merle is thewhole time. But, really, this season, you are really able to see howdiabolical he was, which I thoughtwas really well done.\"Brake likened filming the prisoncell scenes with Handley to actingin a two-person stage play whereMerle is a spider and Kyle is hisprey.\"Eventually, Kyle kind of breakshis web away or escapes from itand, of course, Merle doesn't wantthat, so he's an angry spider at thatpoint, just seeking retribution andrevenge on the two of them,\" Brakesaid, referring to the brothers.\"Merle just loves messing withpeople.\"Brake said Merle hates Mike somuch because Mike turned hisback on the guys who protectedhim when he was in prison yearsearlier.\"He stabbed us in the back. So,from Merle's standpoint, he is justthe lowest of the low. He was in thebrotherhood and now he's betrayedus,\" Brake added.Asked what he will do if Merleactually ever does kill Mike, theactor replied: \"Merle's a very wiseman, so there's probably a littleplan beyond that. First andforemost, what he wants right nowis revenge on everyone.\"Last week, Merle escaped fromprison and murdered Kyle's wife,Tracy (Nishi Munshi), while shewas holding their infant son, Mitch, and speaking to Kyle on the phone.\"All is lost, he's in completeshock,\" Handley said.\"Even watching that scene, it washard for me to sleep that night, justthe way that it all came together,\"he said. \"I think that that was areally smart move for the show. Itpulls no punches. I know somepeople aren't happy about it. But Ithink that it makes a series standout.\"The big question that arises as theseason comes to a close is will Kylebe able to put the pieces of his lifeback together and be able to carefor his son?\"I don't think he's thinking aboutanything,\" Handley said. \"As far asmy prep went, all I would kind oflisten to was just a droning hum. That's all I could I think that'sgoing on in his head -- just ashocked, droning hum,\" Handleysaid. So, what happens if Kyle, theshow's moral compass, doesn'trecover and becomes corrupt andjaded like all of the othercharacters?\"He's always kind of been a beaconof hope, or at least, I think peoplewatch him and are hopeful for himand his wife,\" Handley said.\"I've been reading some commentspeople may be upset about whathappened in [Episode] 8, but what'salways great is a comeback story. Ithink what will be interesting -- ifthe story goes on -- is to see if Kyleis really going to let Kingstowntake him down or will he rise upand get the hell out of there?\"Despite the crushing horror Merlevisits upon Kyle, Handley said heand Brake are actually very goodfriends in real life.\"In between scenes, we're justhanging out, chatting, laughing, talking about life,\" Handley said.\"It was a real pleasure getting towork with him and getting to knowhim.\"Brake said he had great fun withHandley, too.\"We had so much in common,\" herecalled. \"We're talking about somuch and I'm thinking, 'I'm doingthe worst thing that you can do tothis poor man's character, at least,in three weeks time.'But we got onso well. Page 14 HAPPENINGS December 25, 2025 www.hap2it.comSunny, out-of-the-way Languedocstretches from the Mediterraneanto the Pyrenees in southwestFrance. It shares a balmy climate, winter wind, grapevines, and thesea with the better-knownneighboring region of Provence. To me, Languedoc is somehowmore “France in the rough.”I first came here as a teenager, when I visited Languedoc’sspectacular fortified town,Carcassonne. Sitting on theramparts, I wrote in myjournal:“Before me liesCarcassonne, the perfect medievalcity. Like a fish that everyonethought was extinct, somehowEurope’s greatest Romanesquefortress city has survived thecenturies. I was supposed to begone yesterday, but here I sitimprisoned by choice – curled in acranny on top of the wall.”Anyone can feel like a kid on arampart in this ultimate walledcity, but it’s easier to savor itsfairy-tale towers, turrets, andcobblestones if you don’t have tostruggle with the midday mobs. By10 a.m., salespeople are standing, poised eagerly, at the doors of theirsouvenir shops, creating a cheesygauntlet of tacky temptations. Butin the early morning, evening, oroff-season, a quieter Carcassonneis an evocative playground for anymedievalist. The massive walls enfolding theold town are nearly two milesaround, with 52 towers, eachtopped with a “witch hat” turret. For good measure, an outerrampart was added in the 14thcentury. While the double wallsseem mighty enough, moatsstrengthened the city's defenseseven more. These weren’t actuallyfilled with water and alligators –they were just a dry, dangerous noman's-land designed to exposeattackers. The only way to beat aplace like Carcassonne was astarve-'em-out siege.(Charlemagne supposedly tried it,but gave up.)During Carcassonne's 12thcentury golden age, troubadourssang ballads of ideal love, chivalrywas in vogue, and a pragmaticspirit of tolerance ruled. The areabecame a center of the Cathars – aheretical Christian group. Theyopposed the un-Christ-likematerialism of the Church, whichput them on a collision course withthe pope. But as France consolidated itscentral power, it clamped down onfeisty groups like the Cathars, even in this remote corner of thecountry. The king and the popejoined forces to launch the brutal13th-century AlbigensianCrusades. The Cathars retreated toisolated strongholds in the hills, but in the end were ruthlesslywiped out. Today, the ruggedlybeautiful land around Carcassonneis dotted with their haunting castleruins – the closest are those atLastours and Minerve (accessibleonly by car).Scrambling around remote ruinsand meditating on medieval lifealways whets my appetite. InLanguedoc, I go for stick-to-yourribs cassoulet. This regionalspecialty is an old Romanconcoction of goose, duck, pork, sausage, and white beans. Bewarned: “Going local” here canget you tripe (cow intestines) orfoie de veau (calf liver). Whateveryou order, wash it down with oneof the region’s well-made wines. In these parts, the Cathars werealso called Albigensians – namedafter the nearby town of Albi. Thisenjoyable river commune ofsienna-toned bricks and halftimbered buildings has two worldclass sights: a towering cathedraland the Toulouse-LautrecMuseum.Albi’s big and bold St. Cécilecathedral is hard to miss – localsclaim it’s the biggest brickcathedral in the world. It looks lesslike a church and more like afortress. In fact, it was a centralfeature of the town’s defensivewalls. Built during the height ofthe Cathar heresy, this place oozespower: Get on board or get runover, was the message.Next to the church, the ToulouseLautrec Museum contains theworld's largest collection ofartworks by the famous hometownboy. Born in Albi in 1864, Henride Toulouse-Lautrec was crippledfrom youth. His father, once anengaged parent, lost interest in hisdeformed son. Henri drifted to thefringes of society, where he gainedan affinity for other people whodidn't quite fit in.He later moved to Paris and madehis mark painting the city’sunderclass. His candid portraits –of winos, prostitutes, and cabaretdancers – are uniquely colorfuland graphic. His advertisingposters for Paris’s theaters anddance halls were his bread andbutter, and today are some of hismost recognizable works. He diedat age 36, unmourned andunappreciated by the artestablishment. Luckily, the mayorof Albi had the good sense toaccept his artwork when his heirsoffered it to the city.Languedoc’s hard-fought past andindependent spirit are evidenteverywhere – in its landmarkfortified city, ruined castles, heartycuisine, and go-it-alone art.Venture to southwest France todiscover this distinctly localculture.By Rick StevesWith its 52 towers, witch-hat turrets, and nearly two miles of ramparts, Carcassonne is France’s ultimate walled city.Carcassonne:The FortressCity of yourtravel dreamsPresident Donald Trump addedfive countries to hisadministration's travel ban andother entry restrictions, citingwhat officials called inadequatescreening that posed a nationalsecurity risk. The expanded ban includesBurkina Faso, Mali, Niger, SouthSudan and Syria. Themother bear, identified as X33991,is part of the Western Hudson Baypolar bear sub-population.Researchers said that in over 4,600bears from the sub-population thathave been studied over the courseof the last half century, this is onlythe 13th documented case of amother adopting an orphaned cub.Evan Richardson, a researchscientist with Environment andClimate Change Canada, saidpolar bears have strong maternalinstincts. \"Female polar bears arereally good moms and so they'rejust primed for looking after andcaring for their offspring,\" he said.\"We think if there's a little cubthat's bawling on the coast and haslost its mother, these females justcan't help themselves but to takethem on and look after them. It's areally curious behavior and aninteresting aspect of polar bear lifehistory.\"Researchers said they took agenetic sample from the adoptedcub in the hopes of identifyingwhat happened to its biologicalmother.Man singsChristmassongs for 42hours to breakworld recordThe proprietor of asandwich shop inEngland attempted aGuinness WorldRecord by spending42 consecutive hourssinging Christmassongs. New survey datashow that the dramatic decrease insubstance use that began duringthe COVID-19 pandemic has notreversed, signaling a long-termshift in youth behavior. TheNational Institute of Healthfunded Monitoring theFuture survey, which has trackedstudent behaviors and attitudes formore than 50 years, found that thefalloff in drug use reported in 2021has become the new normal.Students took the online survey inclassrooms between February andJune 2025. Researchers initiallythought that as social distancingended and students returned tonormal social lives, drug usewould go right back to pre-2020levels. However, the 2025 datashows that this rebound neveroccurred. The most strikingfinding is the high percentage ofstudents who now report stayingaway from substances entirely. Inthe month leading up to the survey,91% of eighth-graders, 82% of10th-graders and 66% of 12thgraders reported that they did notuse marijuana, alcohol or nicotine. The percentage of teens usingalcohol, cannabis, nicotine, nicotine patches and vaping wasstable from last year to this yearamong all grades. Additionally, while overall numbers remain verylow compared to previous decades, there were small but statisticallysignificant increases in thereported use of heroin and cocainein some grades. The 2025 reportalso looked closely at newerproducts, such as nicotine pouchesand hemp-derived cannabisproducts like Delta-8. USA Today reported the Constant ̦a Courtof Appeal issued the final ruling for\"committing the crime of possession of highrisk drugs, without right, for ownconsumption. The ruling by the appellate courtcame after the country's prosecutor's officeappealed an earlier sentence that saw Khalifafined about $829. The court said itstrengthened the punishment because Khalifa sent \"a message ofnormalization of illegal conduct\" and encouraged \"drug use among youngpeople.\" The court called his actions \"ostentatious.\" Sources close to thesituation told TMZ that the rapper's lawyers are appealing the sentence.Khalifa was sentenced in absentia, and it's unclear if officials in Romaniawill seek to have Khalifa extradited to serve his sentence. Romaniancriminal expert Vlad Zaha told the BBC that there's little chance the USwould extradite Khalifa. He described the sentence as \"unusually harsh.\"\"Given the defendant's wealth and connections, Romania's lack of realnegotiating power on extradition, and the legal and political status ofcannabis in the U.S., it is highly unlikely that Wiz Khalifa will be sent toserve a prison sentence in Constant ̦a,\" Zaha said. Khalifa was brieflydetained in July 2024 after he smoked marijuana during his set at theBeach Please! Festival. The musician addressed his arrest in a post on Xafter his release from custody. \"Last night's show was amazing. I didn'tmean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up onstage,\"he wrote. \"They were very respectful and let me go. I'll be back soon. If you’ve been staging something important and your individual cycles line up, later this week brings big opportunity with great odds for success.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Hold your mindset, don’t let a brief tremor in confidence upend your day. The more you build your inner mental foundation, the less the world can bring you down. You could get all the applause, anyway.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Taking action when the time is right is a boss move, better odds are better odds. The stars in the coming week are ramping up into the last great opportunity days of 2025. Do it or launch it if everything critical lines up.CANCER (June 21-July 22): An active day with a partner could be perfect, too much sedentary time might foster discord if kinetic energies don’t have a constructive outlet. True confidence is obvious, build it inwardly for your own benefit.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Efforts to build community are never wasted, don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves and pitch in. And, the alliances that are made could pay off in other places. Don’t get emotionally invested in something illusionary.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): A playful activity or artistic or musical expression could be fulfilling now, high energies could want to cut loose. Despite today’s above-zero helpful stars, you might want to believe in someone who’s other than they represent.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Weigh the idea or communiqué on merits, not on glossy persuasion, the two are not the same thing. Action at home could move a helpful needle with satisfying effect. Share time with a friend.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Speak out or up, you may need to be heard and your audience should be receptive, the ideas you spark could be valuable. Learning something new can deepen your skillset and uplevel your options.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Applying the right leverage could move a financial situation. You may have been eager to take action, the outlook is better than it’s been. Someone could have important intel to share.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): As a multi-talented person, you have a variety of cards you could play. Pick the right one for the situation at hand. In a collab with the right person, you could both rise more quickly.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your shadow becomes a treasure chest when you get out a shovel [set aside time] and dig into your inner self. The more you clear that’s no longer resonant, the more you bring forth your truest gifts.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): YBuild self-love/self-care game that’s consistent and strong and that sets up all the rest. Confidence is built inwardly, not in owning status stuff, posting thirst traps, or other outer performance.ACROSS1 Calibri, Arial, et al.6 Early show featuring Robin Roberts, for short9 Jargon14 Childish retort15 Sought office16 Not just in one’s head17 Actor who voices the panda in the “Kung Fu Panda” films19 Layered dessert20 Addams cousin21 Visionary23 Source of an oil with medicinal properties26 Ireland’s “Amhrán na bhFiann,” for one29 Brazilian supermodel who’s a face of Maybelline32 Original Beatle Sutcliffe33 Carol contraction34 “Queen Sugar” creator DuVernay35 Flying Cloud and Royale 836 With 40-Across, a punny title for this puzzle39 Some amount40 See 36-Across41 North Carolina university42 Org. that approves cosmetics43 “U slay me!”44 “I’ll take that as __”45 “Slumdog Millionaire” actress50 Vex52 “Totally fine”53 “Give me one moment”56 Sat. antecedent57 Wake-up call, for many59 “Family Guy” voice actor who co-created “Robot Chicken”62 Leads63 Mature64 Meaningless65 Fine and dandy66 Walk very quietly67 Pop-__DOWN1 Sizzling serving2 Provided an address3 Hummingbird’s drink4 Sound of shame5 Blubber6 Primo7 Spice related to nutmeg8 “Diana” singer Paul9 Cuban woman, perhaps10 “You beat me”11 Water between Antwerp and Aberdeen12 Belly13 Loving words18 Property claims22 Title in Tibet24 Nashville athlete25 Parade spoiler27 Hugh Laurie’s alma mater28 Tousle30 Hawaiian island31 Dartmouth, for one35 Artifact36 Try, as a case37 Radius neighbor38 Excursion during a lunar landing39 Beverage suffix40 Good songs, casually42 Worry43 Close securely45 Floppy46 Intermittently fasted, perhaps47 Daredevil quality48 Sign in an apartment window49 QB protectors51 Factor in Hindu reincarnation54 “Quickly!” letters55 Video game giant57 “Got it!”58 Summer fire sign60 “Scram!”61 Molecule in some vaccineshoroscopein the stars
