Page 4 HAPPENINGS February 23, 2023 www.hap2it.com Buffy the Vampire, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scooby-Doo icon Sarah Michelle Gellar says she didn't want to revisit the horror genre unless the project was fresh and meaningful. Fortunately, the new Paramount+ series Wolf Pack, airing Thursdays, fits that description. "It had to be something that really resonated because I owe it to you guys and to myself," the 45-year-old actress recently told the crowd at New York Comic Con. "There are so many more stories to tell. Utilizing the supernatural is how we explain the things that we can't really understand and the stories we can't really grasp -- ones that would be too depressing or upsetting in real life," she said. "We use those to scare ourselves into understanding." Co-starring Rodrigo Santoro, Armani Jackson, Bella Shepard, Chloe Robertson and Tyler Gray, the adaptation of Edo van Belkom's novel is about what happens when a California wildfire drives a mysterious creature out of the forest that then bites several teenagers and turns them into werewolves. Series creator Jeff Davis said he never seriously thought Gellar would read his script, but his staff sent it to her, anyway. "The next day, they wanted to set up a Zoom and I was like, 'Oh, my God, now I have to impress Sarah Michelle Gellar,'" Davis recalled with a laugh. The married mother of two children said she initially had no intention of considering the role of an arson investigator trying to help troubled kids, largely because Buffy had exhausted a teen werewolf storyline involving Seth Green's beloved character, Oz. "No offense. I'm a big fan," she told Davis, "but I was like: 'Hmmm. Not for me.'" What ultimately changed her mind was that Davis wanted to incorporate important real-life issues into his storytelling. "First of all, discussing the fires," she said. "Having lived in LA, I was evacuated because of the last fire for almost a week. We didn't know if our house was going to burn down. [This show demonstrates] understanding all the emotions that come with that." Gellar liked that Wolf Pack stresses the importance of mental health, as well. "We live in a society that is so digitally connected, but, at the same time, ultimately, we are becoming more and more disconnected as humans," she said. "We feel extremely isolated, and we don't have the support of our pack and [this explores] what does that look like for young kids today trying to find their pack? And, for adults, too, who don't feel like they fit in anywhere. It's really scary to feel like you don't fit in." The icing on the cake for her was how visually stunning the show is. "It's extremely cinematic. This world is so beautiful when you see it. I still sometimes can't believe we manage to do, in the short time we're doing it," she said. Davis said a lot of effort went into creating a specific vision for the series that would give it a unique look and feel. 'Wolf Pack:' Wildfires, troubled teens lure Sarah Michelle Gellar back to horror Born April 14, 1977 (age 45) Long Island, New York Gellar is an example of a child actor which led to a successful adult career. At the age of four, she was spotted by an agent in a restaurant and auditioned for (and landed) a part in the television film “An Invasion of Privacy” (1983). Gellar then appeared in a series of commercials for Burger King, including a controversial ad in which she criticized McDonald’s and claimed to only eat at Burger King. This led to five-year-old Gellar being named in a lawsuit by McDonald’s and a ban from eating at the restaurants. “It was tough because when you’re a likee kid, McDonald’s is where all your friends have their birthday parties,” she recalled in a 2004 interview. “So I missed out on a lot of apple pies.” Gellar continued to land roles in her young life before scoring her first breakthrough role in 1997 as the title character in the hit TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Her stardom on the small screen led to lead roles in films such as “Cruel Intentions” (1999), “Scooby Doo” (2002) “The Grudge” (2004), and “Southland Tales” (2006). Gellar met her future husband, Freddie Prinze Jr. while they were filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997), but the two did not start dating until 2000. Together they now have two children and remain together. A fan of Robin Williams for years, Geller learned of the pre-production of the CBS sitcom “The Crazy Ones” and lobbied for a role in the show. The series was cancelled after one season, but Gellar earned a People’s Choice Award. Following the death of Williams in 2014, Gellar decided to take a break from acting and focus on raising her children. She made occasional guest appearances including a voice role on “Star Wars Rebels” (2015-16) and she guest starred as herself in the series finale of “The Big Bang Theory” (2019). In 2022, she made her first film appearances in 13 years with brief roles in “Clerks III” and “Do Revenge.” At the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Gellar would return to television as star and executive producer of the the Paramount+ supernatural drama series “Wolf Pack.” Gellar has been an active advocate for various charities, including breast cancer research, Project Angel food, Habitat for Humanity, and CARE. www.hap2it.com February 23, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Happy Doc There's no underappreciating a physician who is content with their lot. A happy doctor means a much greater likelihood of a happy visit to the clinic. Or at least one not further burdened by the negative vibes of Dr. Grumpy. In most surveys, most doctors say they are generally pleased with their lives and professions. But it turns out there are degrees of contentment. In a 2020 survey on physician lifestyle and happiness, specialists in rheumatology were determined to be the happiest of doctors, followed by general surgery, public health and preventive medicine, allergy and immunology and orthopedics. The least happy specialties were neurology, critical care, internal medicine, gastroenterology and endocrinology. What makes a physician happy? It's not primarily compensation. It's their relationship with patients and a sense of doing good. More than one-quarter of happy doctors said patient gratitude and relationships were the most rewarding part of their job; 23% said it was feeling that they were making the world a better place. So, next time you see your doctor, make them smile, tell a joke. Here's one: Q: What's the difference between a general practitioner and a specialist? A: One treats what you have; the other thinks you have what they treat. Chemo and Pregnancy Often when young women are diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, one of their first questions is about the possibilities and dangers of becoming pregnant during treatment. Conventional wisdom suggests it's not advisable, too problematic or risky for would-be mother and unborn child. Some forms of hormone therapy for breast cancer, such as tamoxifen, can run for 5 to 10 years in order to help prevent a recurrence of breast cancer. That much time obviously and significantly affects a woman's childbearing years. These hormone treatments can also make it harder for women to conceive. But results of a new clinical trial suggest women undergoing longterm breast cancer therapy can safely pause treatment for up to two years while trying to conceive without raising the risk of cancer recurrence in the short term. The trial continues as researchers conduct follow-up studies for at least the next decade. Counts 54: Percentage of older adults (age 65 and older) who rate their dental health at least a four on a scale of one to five 64: Percentage who experienced oral health problems 26: Percent who suffer from some form of tooth loss 68: Percentage who say breadth of coverage of dental services is the top challenge with their dental plans Stories for the Waiting Room A vaccine to prevent respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, in newborns has proven to reduce the rate of severe illness by 81.8% in clinical trials. That's good news. RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Most people recover, but it can be serious and perhaps life-threatening in infants and older adults. Best Medicine A man raced into a hospital parking lot, jumped out of his car and was heading to the doors of the emergency room when a lot attendant stopped him and said, "This is for badge holders only." To which the man replied, "Yeah, I've got a bad shoulder." Observation "Whatever you do, always give 100%, unless you're donating blood." — Comedian Bill Murray Medical History This week in 1875, the first well-documented U.S. birth of quintuplets was five boys born at Watertown, Wisconsin, to Edna Beecham Kanouse and her husband Edward. Though the babies appeared normally developed, one was stillborn, three died within minutes of delivery and the remaining newborn survived only a few hours. Their total birth weight was 10 pounds, 2 ounces. Edna Kanouse would deliver a single child several years later but died a few months after from a contagious disease contracted while caring for a sick friend. Until 1934 and the birth of the healthy Dionne quintuplets in Canada, the longest known survival of a quint was 55 days, born in Lisbon, Portugal. Page 6 HAPPENINGS February 23, 2023 www.hap2it.com Billy Crudup said his futuristic salesman character on Hello Tomorrow!, responds to his clients' personal needs. Crudup, 54, plays Jack, a salesman in an unspecified future year who sells time-shares on the moon. The series premiere is now available on Apple TV+ with new episodes every Friday. "Any good salesperson isn't really selling a product," Crudup told UPI in a Zoom interview. "They're selling to a person." Jack actually sells the promise of vacations on the moon, and although he has a quota to meet, Crudup said he believes his character sincerely wants to offer his clients a wonderful opportunity. "That personal connection is born out of curiosity," Crudup said. "A love for humanity, I think, is the thing that comes through in a great salesperson." Jack manages a team of salesmen that includes Eddie (Hank Azaria) and Herb (Dewshane Williams). Crudup said Jack's outward confidence also masks his insecurities. "He's so good at this sell that it makes you wonder what's ticking underneath," Crudup said. "There's a little confusion there at the bottom. Confusion can definitely lead to some sadness." Jack also recruited a new salesman, Joey (Nicholas Podany), who he mentors. Crudup said Joey also fills a void in Jack's life. "He goes to great lengths to try to introduce Joey to a world of hope, optimism and dream fulfillment," Crudup said. Podany said he read books on sales and listened to a recording of The Power of Inspired Salesmanship by Millard Bennett and Norman Vincent Peale. He said Bennett also pushed the idea of fulfillment through sales, which Podany found suspect. "If you are able to get the product, if you're able to be the salesman, your life will be better - - no doubt about it," Podany said. "And then you go home and you cry a little." Backing up the salesmen, Shirley (Haneefah Wood) manages the office and helps generate sales leads. Wood said Shirley buys into what Jack is selling "as long as she's bringing that money in." Though set in the future, Crudup said he sees Hello Tomorrow! as a statement about modern day consumerism. People cannot visit the moon in 2023, but Crudup said we may have an unhealthy dependence on material possessions. "It's a wonderful question to continue to ask ourselves as ingenious human beings," Crudup said. "What can really improve the quality of life for the highest number of people? I'm not sure that the answer is always products." Williams said he also saw Herb's time-share sales as a metaphor for modern technology, including Zoom. "I won't even necessarily call [technology] an addiction," Williams said. "I'll just say it's a necessary aspect of our modern lives." Wood said selling trips to the moon suggests consumers are trying to find an escape in their lives, the same way people try to escape into gadgets like smartphones. "We think that living on the moon is more is going to be better than us living down here on this Earth today and being present," Wood said. The salesman of Hello Tomorrow! dresses the part, too. Crudup said wearing the tailored suits gave him the posture of being a salesman. "It forces a kind of physical behavior," Crudup said. "Pulling up your britches there around your waist, it was a gift to have such incredible costume designers whose work built your character with you." Hello Tomorrow! is Crudup's first executive producer credit in his 36-year screen career. His feature film credits range from 1997's Sleepers to 2000's Almost Famous and 2017's Justice League, plus director Zack Snyder's 2021 extended edition of that film. Crudup has been in the Apple family as a cast member of The Morning Show, which is returning for a third season. He said he does not consider himself an executive producer to the extent his Morning Show co-stars, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, earn that credit. However, Crudup said he appreciated the additional responsibilities, mainly the conversations with creators Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen, writerproducer Stephen Falk and executive producer Jonathan Entwistle. "It just meant more phone calls, but it was wonderful because I got to collaborate," Crudup said. New episodes of Hello Tomorrow! premiere Fridays on Apple TV+. By Fred Topel Billy Crudup stars in "Hello Tomorrow!" on Apple TV+ Billy Crudup: 'Hello Tomorrow!' salesman has love for humanity "I told the directors and the directors of photography right off the bat, 'Have fun with this. Make it interesting, make it weird, make it cool. ... Let's give them something to watch. Let's give them color, brightness and incredible angles,'" Davis said. "I love the way this show is shot." He said he also wanted Wolf Pack to be different from the other, similarly themed show he created, Teen Wolf. "We didn't just want to do a carbon copy," Davis said. "This is new." Gellar said working with younger actors who are just starting out energizes her and reminds her how lucky she is to still be working steadily after decades in show business. "When you've been doing it so long, sometimes it becomes routine. It's a job," she noted. "You can lose the love and the passion, and I'm fortunate that I still love what I do. I feel extremely grateful to get the opportunities that I get. Getting to relive that through [younger co-stars'] eyes just makes it more exciting and enjoyable." Davis said Gellar is also a really good producer on the show. "She'll be on set and look over and say, 'You know, we can save two hours just by doing this, this and this,'" Davis said. "And she's right! This is a woman with 40 years of experience in the industry." "Did you have to put a number on that?" Gellar teased. "Really?" www.hap2it.com February 23, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Verona is for lovers About two hours from bustling Milan and touristy Venice is Verona – a welcome sip of pure, easygoing Italy. Made famous by Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, Verona is one of Italy’s mostvisited cities – second in the Veneto region only to Venice in population and artistic importance. If you don’t need world-class sights, this town is a joy. Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” made Verona a household word. The House of Juliet, where the real-life Cappello family once lived, is a crass and throbbing mob scene. The tiny, admittedly romantic courtyard is a spectacle in itself, with visitors from all over the world posing on the almost believable balcony and taking snapshots of each other rubbing Juliet’s bronze breast, hoping to get lucky in love. The city is so famous for love that it gets countless letters addressed simply to "Juliet, Verona, Italy." There are even volunteers to respond to these mostly lovesick people (see www.julietclub.com). And they’re getting even busier, thanks to the movie “Letters to Juliet," about a girl (Amanda Seyfried) who finds a letter while visiting the House of Juliet and travels through Italy to help reunite the author with her lost love. Despite the romantic fiction, the town is packed with genuine history. Because ancient Romans considered Verona an ideal resting spot before crossing the Alps, the city has a wealth of Roman ruins. The well-preserved amphitheater – the third largest in the Roman world – dates from the first century ad and still retains most of its original stone. Over the centuries, crowds of up to 25,000 spectators have cheered Roman gladiator battles, medieval executions, and modern plays – including Verona’s popular summer opera festival, which takes advantage of the arena’s famous acoustics. Corso Porta Borsari was the main drag of Roman Verona. A stroll here makes for a fun, ancient scavenger hunt. Remnants of the town’s illustrious past – chips of Roman columns, medieval reliefs, fine old facades, and fossils in marble – are scattered among modern-day fancy shop windows. And Verona has its share of excellent eateries. One of my happiest memories from a trip is of eating with my friend Franklin at a popular local enoteca (wine bar). The carne cruda (raw beef), was, as Franklin put it, “like seeing the smile of a beautiful woman after 10 years. You never forget her. ” The mortadella (Italian-style baloney – not a high-end meat) was served with black truffle. It was exquisite. Imagine calling Spam exquisite – just add truffle. Then came the best polenta I’d ever tasted, with anchovies. As it turns out, anchovies and polenta are a “good marriage.” For dessert: a plate of voluptuous slices of cheese. “Even if we do not talk,” said Franklin, “with these cheeses we have a good conversation. ” As I held the warm and happy tire of my full tummy, I thought about how Italians live life with abandon – and how they enjoy their food. Besides eating, for me the highlight of Verona is the evening passeggiata (stroll). It’s a multigenerational affair. Like peacocks, the young and nubile spread their wings across the wide sidewalk promenade, made broad by the town’s Venetian overloads in the 17th century so the town’s beautiful people could see and be seen in all their finery. Whenever I stroll here, I find myself surrounded by little love stories – romantic snapshots fluttering in and out of my world like a butterfly. A guy on a bike pedals gracefully by, his girlfriend sitting on the handlebars embracing him. A woman tells me that her husband is her mezza mela – half an apple. Apparently, when soul mates find each other in Italy, it makes the apple whole. I don’t know if all of this love is related to the Romeo and Juliet hype – or if it’s just the natural high that comes from living in such a joyful and highly cultured place. By Rick Steves travel Plane spends 16 hours in the air, ends up back at same New Zealand airport Passengers on a flight from New Zealand to New York spent 16 hours in the air just to end up at the same airport where their journey began. The Air New Zealand nonstop flight from Auckland to New York had been in the air for about 8 hours last Thursday and was about 2,000 miles from California when the airline received word that an electrical fire at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport had led to Terminal 1 being closed. The airline said the decision was made for the plane to turn around and return to Auckland, where it landed about 16 hours after departing. "Diverting to another U.S. port would have meant the aircraft would remain on the ground for several days, impacting a number of other scheduled services and customers," an airline spokeswoman told the New Zealand Herald. Terminal 1 remained closed last Friday while crews repaired the issues caused by the electrical fire. The airline apologized to passengers and said those aboard the flight would be booked on the next available flights to New York. Verona’s Roman arena is an impressive sight, with much of the stonework still intact. United Airlines to make it easier for families to sit together United Airlines said it will enhance the ability for families to sit together under a new policy that makes it easier for children 12 and under to sit next to an adult. The carrier said a new online seating engine allows customers to access features for family seating, reviewing available economy seating with optional complimentary upgrades. "Customers traveling with children under 12 will start to see more adjacent seat options immediately and the complete policy change will go into effect in early March," United said in a statement. "In instances when adjacent seats are not available prior to travel -- due to things like last minute bookings, full flights or unscheduled aircraft changes -- United's new policy also lets customers switch for free to a flight to the same destination with adjacent seat availability in the same cabin." "In an era where more families are working in a hybrid environment, they're traveling more often -- and they're flying United," Linda Jojo, chief customer officer for United, said in a statement.

Page 12 HAPPENINGS February 23, 2023 www.hap2it.com California man earns world record for 2,995 consecutive Disneyland visits A California man who visited the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim for 2,995 consecutive days was rewarded with a Guinness World Records certificate. Guinness World Records announced Jeff Reitz, 50, earned the record for most consecutive visits to Disneyland. Reitz's daily visits to Disneyland began in 2012, and ended just shy of 3,000 visits when the park closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Reitz, who chronicled his daily Disney trips on social media, started getting media attention after his 60th consecutive visit to the park, and he made international headlines in 2017, when he made his 2,000th visit and was awarded with a backpack full of gifts by Disney officials. Reitz said he hasn't been back to Disneyland since the start of the pandemic, but he is hoping to make it in time for Disney's 100th anniversary celebrations later this year. "I have not set a return date yet, but now I think it would be really fun to return with my Guinness World Records title certificate to get pictures where I earned it -- inside Disneyland," Reitz told Guinness World Records. Unpublished JFK photo from day of assassination found in thrift store CD case A Texas man who bought a second-hand CD from a small-town thrift shop made a surprising discovery inside the case -- a Polaroid photo of President John F. Kennedy on the day of his assassination. George Rebeles said he was at a thrift store when he decided to buy Bachman Turner Overdrive's The Anthology on CD. Upon opening the CD case, he discovered an object inside that he soon realized was a Polaroid photo. The photo depicted Kennedy riding in his motorcade in Dallas. The date handwritten on the back of the photo was "11-22-63," the day of Kennedy's assassination. Rebeles said he knew it was an unusual find in a thrift store CD case. "Of course realized immediately that this was an unpublished photograph. So I was excited," Rebeles said. "It just struck me as odd to find it in a CD case." Historians said the photo appears to have been snapped as the motorcade left Love Field, a good distance from the location of the assassination. Rebeles said he hasn't yet decided whether to keep the photo or try to sell it to a collector. Drake, 21 Savage settle lawsuit over fake Vogue cover Rap stars Drake and 21 Savage have settled a lawsuit brought by Vogue over their use of a fake magazine cover to promote their album Her Loss. The two rap stars released promotional materials for the 2022 album that included a mockup of a Vogue cover, a fake Saturday Night Live appearance, a fake NPR Tiny Desk performance and a fake interview on the Howard Stern show. The other outlets apparently took the promotional use of their brands in stride, but Vogue did not. After repeated attempts to get the rappers to stop using the imagery, Vogue's parent company, Condé Nast, filed a $4 million dollar trademark infringement lawsuit. "As a creative company, we of course understand our brands may from time to time be referenced in other creative works," Condé Nast general counsel Will Bowes said in a statement to staff this week obtained by Semafor. "In this instance, however, it was clear to us that Drake and 21 Savage leveraged Vogue's reputation for their own commercial purposes and, in the process, confused audiences who trust Vogue as the authoritative voice on fashion and culture." Terms of the settlement were not disclosed but the memo indicated that the payment would help "bolster our outgoing creative output, including Vogue editorial." Neither Drake, 21 Savage or Wintour have commented on the settlement. Page 26 HAPPENINGS February 23, 2023 www.hap2it.com February 23, 2023 through March 1, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): You might feel a real yearning to be pampered and to look forward to enjoyable pastimes and social activities. Set aside time for some self-care. Later, you may be in the mood to cuddle up with someone who tickles your fancy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): ou could feel you are living out a fantasy if a romantic partner or a loved one indicates that you are especially attractive. Never succumb to an urge to act on your worst instincts; nip these in the bud as the week unfolds. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Think on your feet. You might be quicker on the uptake than usual for the next few days. Since you can work rapidly and accurately, this may be a good time to take the lead on projects that need attention to detail. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Once a clear picture is in your mind, you can enthusiastically work toward manifesting it in the real world. You'll eventually get there if you stay with it, even if you take baby steps. Start the week off with an energetic attitude. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Turn ordinary concepts into something more valuable. This is a week when you may find a new interest or study that can become your personal philosopher’s stone. Don’t let a past problem make you reluctant to try something new. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): It is a good idea to read the fine print and analyze things before you make a financial commitment. You may be too interested in getting a good deal and ignore basic problems. Quick thinking is a great asset on any job. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Just wishing upon a star is seldom enough. You may be wrapped up in romantic fantasies now, but later in the week, you might find the real thing. Peer pressure may persuade you to alter or adjust your business habits. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Romantic feelings may arise, but you must remain realistic. Sometimes people appear more talented and honest than they are. You could be hesitant about giving a family member another chance at making amends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Weigh your choices. Keep on track by listening to your heart and understanding the difference between right and wrong. Your week will go better if you concentrate on fulfilling your promises and commitments. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You may look for ways to whittle down the demands on your wallet in the upcoming week. Pay off some debts and cash in any perks from your credit cards. A loved one might inspire you to be more creative. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Life goes on. Ponder recent events and put them into proper perspective so you can move forward. Follow the rules even if other people want you to bend them. Investing in the best quality can give longer-lasting satisfaction. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Exercise common sense when you can and use intuition when you can't. By the end of the week, your idealism and compassion could impel you to give back to your community. Throw yourself into creative activities.
