Page 4 HAPPENINGS September 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Melora Hardin said her new film, Golden Vanity, which premiered last week at the Burbank Film Festival, drew on her years of experience as a stage and screen actor and a singer. Hardin, who has been performing since the age of 6, plays movie star Mabel Montgomery-Mayflower, who is having a breakdown after losing her category at an awards show in 1967. The film is from writers Max Abram and Taylor Minas. Abram directed Golden Vanity independently, so it is not among the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers productions currently on strike. Hardin is the only actor who appears on screen in the film. "I'm a dancer and so I think that also came into play," Hardin told UPI in a recent phone interview. "I was always looking for ways to use the space in surprising ways and not just be a talking head." Mabel records her memoirs in what becomes a performance for the viewer. The character speaks in a "Mid-Atlantic, slightly English, American accent" that was common in early Hollywood stars. Golden Vanity filmed for five days, but rehearsed for two weeks. Hardin said she would do some takes for 40 to 45 minutes. When she needed a break, Hardin had methods for recharging. "There was a room in the house that was my room," Hardin said. "I would just go there and meditate for 10 to 15 minutes and then come back down and do it again." Hardin said the schedule was well-paced so she had breaks between the film's most emotional scenes. "We didn't try to do all the super emotional stuff in one day," Hardin said. "The whole thing is pretty emotional, but we tried to pace ourselves." Like the fictional Mabel, Hardin, 56, had been acting since she was a child, though Hardin's career began in television. She appeared in an after-school special and episodes of Diff'rent Strokes and Little House on the Prairie, followed by '80s movies like Iron Eagle and Soul Man. But it was roles as Dunder Mifflin Vice President Jan Levinson in The Office and Trudy Monk on Monk that solidified Hardin to TV audiences. In many of those roles, Hardin combined comedy and bittersweet drama. Hardin said that is what Abram and Minas responded to in her body of work. "There were just things that they felt they'd seen in my work over the years," Hardin said. "They wanted her to be dark, but light. They wanted it to be heartbreaking." As a child actor, Hardin said she had a much better experience than Mabel, who was inspired by stars like Judy Garland. However, Hardin said she still could relate to Mabel's struggles. "I did start in this business so young, so I've seen a lot of people go down that path," Hardin said. "I remember working when I was little with some kids who worked all the time and then they kind of went off the deep end." Hardin said she credits her parents with teaching her to focus on the craft of acting, not getting famous. Unfortunately, Mabel's mother had other interests, as Mabel reveals in her monologues. "She was a victim of her own life," Hardin said. "Mabel's mother was focused on fame and living vicariously through her." Golden Vanity also takes advantage of Hardin's musical skills. Hardin, who has performed in Broadway musicals, has also released three albums. Mabel sings an original song called "Curtain Call" in the film, written by Nick Thorburn and arranged by Stuart Brawley. "Curtain Call" is only a minute and one-half, which added challenges for Hardin. "To have to be able to get the emotional story of it really, really fast, but you also have to get to that climax vocally really fast," Hardin said. By Fred Topel Melora Hardin stars in the new film “Golden Vanity” 'Golden Vanity' drew on all of Melora Hardin's experience Born June 29, 1967 (age 56) Houston, Texas Hardin was raised the daughter of acting coach, manager, and retired actress Diane and actor Jerry Hardin. Her father has had over 100 credits to his film resume, but is perhaps best known to modern audiences as the recurring character of Deep Throat in the FOX series “The XFiles.” At the age of five, her family relocated to San Francisco, California where Hardin began her acting career at the age of 9 on the television series “Thunder.” Hardin was originally cast as Jennifer in the 1985 film “Back to the Future,” when Eric Stoltz was cast as Marty McFly. After filming began, Stoltz was fired and Michael J. Fox famously took on the role. After Fox was cast, Hardin was deemed too tall to star alongside Fox and was replaced by Claudia Wells. In 1988, CBS attempted to make a television series based on the hit film “Dirty Dancing.” Hardin starred as the main character of Baby in 11 episodes of the failed series. On the hit USA series “Monk,” Hardin had the recurring role of Trudy Monk, the title character’s deceased wife. Perhaps her most famous role came in 2005 when she was cast as Jan Levinson, Vice President of Dundler Mifflin Paper Company, who develops and on-again, offagain romantic relationship with Steve Carell’s character Michael Scott. Since 1997, Hardin has been married to actor Gildart Jackson (Gideon in “Charmed”). The pair have two daughters. FYI Melora Hardin

www.hap2it.com September 21, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Body of Knowledge It's true that chewing gum is largely indigestible. It's not true that, if swallowed, it sits for years (forever?) in your stomach. Like everything else you eat, purposefully or not, the body has a process. In this case, it involves moving indigestible materials (such as fiber and gum) through the intestinal tract until they are eventually expelled. Still, it's not a good idea to routinely swallow gum, which in abundance may clump together to form a gut-blocking mass called a bezoar. Get Me That, Stat! High costs aren't the only barriers blocking people, even those with insurance, from health care. Red tape, denied claims and complexity also delay people from getting care or prevent it altogether, according to a new KFF survey. At least half of respondents said they had trouble once or more last year with health care coverage, regardless of type, and nearly half said their problems were not resolved to their satisfaction. Denials were less common from Medicare and Medicaid, but finding in-network providers was harder with Medicaid and marketplace coverage. Even so, most people (81%) gave their insurers "excellent" or "good" marks. Other numbers: — Two-thirds rated their own health as "fair" or "poor." — About three-quarters received mental health treatment in the past year. — More than three-quarters had more than 10 provider visits in the past year. Best Medicine Q: Why should regular visits to a paint store be part of any diet regimen? A: You can get thinner there. Observation "The first time I see a jogger smiling, I'll consider it."— American comedian Joan Rivers (1933-2014) Medical History This week in 1999, the death of an 83-year-old man stung by a swarm of Africanized "killer" bees marked the first fatality by that cause in California. Virgil Foster was a beekeeper who, while mowing his lawn in Los Angeles County, was attacked and stung at least 50 times by the highly aggressive bees. He was not breathing when paramedics arrived and soon went into cardiac arrest. For two weeks, he was kept alive on a respirator. As it turned out, Foster's three hives had been taken over by wild Africanized honeybees. Originally hybridized in Brazil in the 1950s, the killer bees had migrated north through Mexico. They were first seen in the U.S. in Texas in 1990. Before spreading into California, killer bee attacks had already caused several deaths in other states. Sum Body Five purported anti-aging remedies from the 20th century: 1. Beer. During the Prohibition, a home brew infused with root juices of dandelion and rhubarb was touted to remove wrinkles and add a "peachlike bloom" to female imbibers. 2. Swoboda exercise system. Developed by Alois Swoboda, an Austrian immigrant, it primarily involved a series of pretty standard upper body exercises. Great for biceps and chest, perhaps, but Swoboda also promised his system would cure disease and restore youth. 3. Snow cure. Exactly what it sounds like: rolling in the snow naked. 4. Goat glands cure. This involved transplanting goat testicles into men and goat ovaries into women, allegedly curing almost every conceivable condition other than gullibility. A similar treatment involved monkey glands. 5. Radioactive water. The approach fell out of favor after the widely publicized death of a true believer, who suffered horrible disfigurement (loss of jaws and teeth) before going to his maker. Med School Q: According to multiple studies, which day of the week are heart attacks most likely to happen? A: Monday, and it's maybe a little bit connected to going back to work. Research suggests the increased risk correlates to a change in the body's circadian rhythm or natural sleep-wake cycle, i.e., not getting to sleep in. Curtain Calls Margaret Wise Brown, the author of the iconic children's book "Goodnight Moon," was treated for ruptured appendix. Post-surgery, to show nurses how well she was feeling, she kicked one foot high in the air, dislodging an undetected blood clot in her leg. The clot quickly traveled to her brain and she died during emergency surgery. Brown was 42. Page 6 HAPPENINGS September 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Many consider Germany’s Rothenburg ob der Tauber to be the best-preserved medieval town in Europe…and many also consider it a horrible tourist trap. It’s true that everyone in the town makes their living from tourism, and the storybook streets are indeed stampeded midday with visiting tour groups. The town even created its own “traditional” pastry – the Schneeball (or snowball) to complement all the faux traditional Christmas ornaments it sells. Yet when I pass through its medieval gates, I feel like a kid who just got a three-day pass for all the rides at Disneyland. I love Rothenburg but I’ve long wondered why, exactly. Perhaps it’s because medieval life comes alive in its cobbled alleys. The ramparts are intact – complete with arrow slits. Halftimbered buildings show old-time lofts with warehouse doors and pulleys on top for hoisting (the lofts were once filled with a year’s supply of grain so the town could survive any siege). The monastery garden still has its medicinal herbs. And the Medieval Crime and Punishment Museum shows graphically how people were disciplined back when life was nasty, brutish, and short. I sense no competition among the town’s many shopkeepers. At the AnRa shop, Anett sells her flowery clothes, but she also started an initiative called “Handmade in Rothenburg,” a coalition between 10 local business owners who meet weekly to support each other and collaborate on ideas to strengthen the community. Businesses here are often passed down from generation to generation. Take the Friese Shop – cuckoo with friendliness, trinkets, and souvenirs – which has been open for more than 90 years. Long owned and operated by Anneliese, it’s now lovingly run by her son, Bernie, with help from his daughter, nieces, and their friend. I’ve noticed that, for observant travelers, some of the best social moments combust among hotel and restaurant staff after a long day of work, and after most guests have said "ciao." It happens in a pub after hours in Galway when the door is locked and the musicians play on. It happens on the Italian Riviera when the anchovies are eaten, the dishes are washed, and the guitars come out. And in small-town German hotels when a family and the hired help stow their workplace hierarchy with their aprons and take out a special bottle of wine. I marvel at – in Rothenburg – how easy that is. As a guidebook writer, my challenge is to help travelers connect with real people. As I get to return year after year, it’s easier for me. For travelers, the challenge is to find places where you can be a part of a quirky yet lovable community…if only for a short visit. Rothenberg is a good place to start. By Rick Steves Rothenburg, Germany: Small-town charm travel Picturesque Rothenburg, with its pastel buildings, uniform rooflines, and flower boxes, is also famous for its unique people. A Delta Airlines flight with 85 passengers and crew landed safely Monday at Boston's Logan International Airport after the jet was likely struck by lightning as it came in for a landing. Flight 2346, which departed Chicago shortly after 8:30 p.m. EDT, was possibly hit by a bolt of lightning in Boston as the Airbus A220 approached the runway around midnight. Maintenance crews met the aircraft on the tarmac and inspected the wings for any signs of damage while passengers exited the plane at Terminal A. There were no reports of any injuries following the incident. The airline would not provide confirmation or further details about what happened. In keeping with Delta's safety policies, the plane will remain out of service until a full inspection can be completed. Delta flight possibly hit by lightning while landing at Logan International in Boston Delta Airlines is changing the way customers earn frequent flyer miles, consolidating the program into the single metric of Medallion Qualifying Dollars (MQDs) beginning Jan. 1. Perks will be based on dollars spent rather than miles. Currently frequent flyer status can be achieved through a combination of dollars spent and miles. Delta's Dwight James told USA Today, "We looked at a lot of different metrics and one thing we included was MQD was already part of our construct and it seemed to resonate the most and the best with a lot of our members. We did want to come to one metric. Customers indicated that this resonated well with them." It will be harder for Delta flyers to earn elite frequent flyer status. Under the MQD system the more people spend the higher frequent flyer tier they will achieve. Silver status will cost flyers $6000, for gold it's $12,000. Platinum level will cost $18,000 while the top-tier Diamond will cost $35,000. Both Medallion Qualifying Miles and Medallion Qualifying Segments are being phased out. Existing customers with SkyMiles can convert into MQD's or redeemable miles for the 2025 qualifying year. Starting next year Delta flyers will earn a Medallion Qualifying Dollar for every dollar spent on Delta flights, lodging, car rentals and vacation packages booked through Delta. It's a downgrade for American Express cardholders because perks will be limited. Instead of unlimited visits to Sky Club lounges they will get six visits per year unless they spend $75,000 within a calendar year on the card. For Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business cardholders, there will be 10 Sky Club visits per year unless they spend $75,000 per year. Delta changes the way flyers earn elite frequent flyer status

www.hap2it.com September 21, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Editor's note: This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of "Winning Time." Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty cast Max E. Williams as famous Lakers fan Jack Nicholson. But Salli Richardson-Whitfield said the recent season finale, which she directed, had to omit a scene in which Nicholson moons the Celtics' fans. "He actually mooned the Boston audience," RichardsonWhitfield told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "He went to [Boston] Garden and mooned them." Richardson-Whitfield said she filmed Williams recreating Nicholson's moon, but decided it did not fit the tone of the episode. "We shot it, but it felt a little bit too comical," she said. The season finale depicts the 1984 championships between the Lakers and Celtics. The Lakers lost that series after tying it in Game 6. Nicholson is still featured on the sidelines in some of the games. Richardson-Whitfield said Williams improvised Nicholson's taunts to the Boston players and crowd. "Knowing Jack, he could have said anything," RichardsonWhitfield said. The finale includes highlights from each game, among them Kevin McHale (Andrew Stephens) clotheslining Kurt Rambis (Joel Allen) on the court, both teams sweating through Game 6 at the Boston and a riot breaking out after Boston won Game 7. "Our big thing to figure out is how do we show you these things that you can watch on YouTube at any point and still make it exciting?" Richardson-Whitfield asked rhetorically. Likewise, the director said it was challenging to make the season finale exciting for fans who already knew the Lakers lost. She said the show achieves that by delving deeper into the players on the court in-between those famous highlights. "It's showing you stuff that you can't see on YouTube, showing you the heart of the game, showing you what Magic [Johnson] and [Larry] Bird may have been thinking during those final moments," Richardson-Whitfield said. Though known for calling his own teammates "sissies," the focus of Bird's (Sean Patrick Small) aggression in Winning Time is his opponent, Johnson (Quincy Isaiah). Johnson was setting records for assists in Game 3, causing Bird to reassess the Celtics' defense. Though the trash talk they exchange in the show gets rather personal, Richardson-Whitfield said she believes that came from respecting each others' prowess. "I think it's a mixture of 'I want to beat that guy' and 'I admire that guy,'" she said. "That fuel of competitiveness is what you're seeing there." Richardson-Whitfield said the heat in Boston Garden in June 1984 affected the Lakers, who were used to playing in air conditioned arenas. To recreate that heat, Richardson-Whitfield said, the show added drips and drops to the banners hanging in the arena, but the rest was achieved with special effects. "We had more atmosphere pumped in so you'd get that smoky feel," Richardson-Whitfield said. "Every shot before we shoot, everyone has to run into the side and literally just get dumped with water." Even the background actors playing fans in the stand got wet for the shots, she said. When the riot breaks out after the Celtics' victory, Winning Time freezes the frame to confirm that certain events occurred in real life. Richardson-Whitfield said the show's editors presented that idea during post-production. "We really wanted to make it clear when things were true or when we changed things and shifted them a little bit," she said. "Because people would assume that that is a lie, we wanted to really make it clear -- nope, this happened, this happened." Richardson-Whitfield has directed five episodes of WInning Time so far, and she had hoped for a Season 3 so she can direct the Lakers' victory. However, last week, HBO cancelled the series. "It would be very sad to end it here," Richardson-Whitfield said, before news of the cancellation broke. An actor since the '90s in shows like Family Law and movies like Antwone Fisher and I Am Legend, Richardson-Whitfield transitioned to directing episodes of her SYFY series Eureka. Directing has kept her busy with The Gilded Age, Wheel of Time and Altered Carbon, in addition to Winning Time. "I thought I was going to be doing both and then somehow I started directing and never had the time to act again," she said. "I realized that maybe this is what I'm supposed to be doing." Winning Time is now streaming on Max. By Fred Topel Patrick Small plays Larry Bird, John C. Reilly plays Lakers owner Jerry Buss, and Quincy Isaiah plays Magic Johnson in the acclaimed HBO series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” Jack Nicholson mooning Celtics was filmed, but deleted from HBO’s 'Winning Time'

Page 12 HAPPENINGS September 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Ski resort in French Alps closes permanently: 'not much snow' The La Sambuy ski resort in Seythenex, France, is permanently closed for business, citing a lack of snow. The decision was made by the municipal council of the town, which operates the resort, due to the resort's ski season shrinking as a result of global warming. Mayor Jacques Dalex told CNN that operating the resort is no longer profitable. Last winter there were just four weeks of snow, Dalex said. "Even then, not much snow." The resort is located near Mont Blanc in the French Alps. The resort will continue to be a destination for hiking and other outdoor activities. Popular summer activities include rock climbing, cave diving, hiking, paragliding and riding its bike trails. Black bear loose in Disney's Magic Kingdom park safely caught, relocated A black bear that prompted the closing of parts of Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom theme park in Orlando, Fla., last Monday has been safely captured and removed, state wildlife officials said. Disney officials closed nearly half of the Magic Kingdom, including its Frontierland, Liberty Square and Adventureland attractions, after the bear was spotted in a tree early in the day. They were reopened after several hours. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials later said they had successfully captured the loose bruin. As fall approaches, bears become more active as they go on the hunt for food to prepare for their winter hibernation, wildlife officials pointed out. Many older Americans lose wealth before dementia diagnosis Perhaps succumbing to fraudsters or facing mounting bills, older Americans begin losing wealth in the years preceding a definitive dementia diagnosis, new research shows. For example, the median household net worth of the seniors in the study dropped by more than half in the eight years before they were diagnosed with dementia, but dipped much less for folks who retained their mental capacity. It's well documented that aging people who are losing mental acuity can find finances tough to manage, and are also prime targets for scammers. Li and colleagues wondered if mental deterioration might be reflected in the financial deterioration of a person's assets, as well. To find out, they tracked 20 years of data (1998-2018) from the ongoing Health and Retirement Study, which follows outcomes every two years for Americans 50 years of age and older and their spouses. People affected by probable dementia were also more likely to not own a home: Only 50.2% did, compared to 62.2% of people untouched by dementia. The study wasn't designed to probe why hidden dementia takes such a financial toll. However, the study group said it "may reflect deteriorating financial capability associated with cognitive decline [including susceptibility to fraud]." Clerk's mistake nets Maryland man a $580,000 lottery prize A Maryland man won a $580,000 prize from a lottery ticket he only purchased because of a clerk's mistake. The Upper Marlboro man told officials he visited the gas station with the intention of buying some Cash4Life tickets. "I gave him the money and said, 'I want to buy five Cash4Life tickets,'" the player recalled. "The attendant made a mistake and gave me a MultiMatch ticket instead. I was like, 'Oh, a new guy.' He was so apologetic." The player decided to accept the ticket, and a few days later discovered he had won a $580,000 prize from the MultiMatch drawing. The man said he stopped to double-check his luck. "On the way home from work that night, I stopped by the retailer and scanned it. I took a picture of the message to prove it was true," he said. The couple said the money will allow them to pay off their child's college loan and start a new family-run healthcare business to focus on helping geriatric patients. Clorox warns of supply shortages after summer cyberattack In a regulatory filing, cleaningproduct company Clorox said a cyberattack in August has led to supply shortages. Clorox admitted in the filing that, while it took immediate action when it learned about activity on some of its information technology systems, it has yet to ramp up its operations fully after the attack. Clorox said it expects to start the process of transitioning back to normal automated order processing next week. It told the SEC it has already resumed production at most of its manufacturing sites and expects to reach full production over time. Shares for Clorox tumbled about 2% in early trading last Monday. Clorox is one of the country's bestknown household cleaning brands, making items such as bleach, detergents and cleaners. A similar cyberattack on MGM Resorts last week prevented guests from making charges and from having access their rooms with digital coast to coast YouTube cuts off Russell Brand's ad revenue YouTube cut off actor Russell Brand's revenue from ads displayed on his channel after high-profile allegations of rape and sexual assault. Brand owns multiple channels on the platform, with over 6 million subscribers to his main outlet. Several prominent British publications, including The Times, reported last weekend that Brand abused women in Britain and the United States at the height of his fame. Accusations include raping a woman with whom he'd previously had consensual relations and "grooming" a 16- year-old girl. Brand, 48, strongly denied the allegations in a video statement, saying all of his relationships had been consensual. He has called the accusations a conspiracy and a "coordinated attack," part of a "serious and concerted agenda." A YouTube representative said in a statement the demonetization was prompted by a possible violation of the platform's "Creator Responsibility policy." If a content creator does something harmful to users or employees off the platform, the company says it will "take action." The BBC reported it followed suit, removing some shows from its streaming service that featured Brand, a comedian. According to the British broadcast giant, the content "now falls below public expectations." Sara McCorquodale, CEO of social media analysis agency CORQ, told the BBC that Brand "was probably making more revenue from YouTube than any other platform." She estimated he likely made between $2,500 and nearly $5,000 per video. Russell Brand

www.hap2it.com September 21, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 21 Let The Fun Begin! Receptions used to be the place where guests mingled among food and friends and danced the night away before seeing the bride and groom off on their honeymoon. While great for guests who liked to dance, receptions did not offer guests who would rather not dance much to do other than to sit around and chat. If you were seated next to someone you knew, great. If not, you better prepare for a lot of small talk. But, now things are changing. Today many brides and grooms offer a variety of activities in addition to dancing to bring guests together and keep them entertained. Couples are recognizing that guests may not know each other and are incorporating ice breakers into their receptions. These can run the gamut from mad libs to trivia quizzes to story time. Instead of making small talk about the flower arrangements, for example, guests can get to know each other as they reflect on an episode in their life in the year the penny next to their plate was made. Once the ice is broken, couples can keep the fun going with games that everyone can play. Bingo, garter relays, musical chairs, scavenger hunts and trivia quizzes are all games that can build camaraderie and keep guests entertained. In addition to helping guests get to know each other through group activities, couples are also recognizing the need for individual activities other than dancing. They are setting up tables for guests to play cards and board games and TVs and game consoles for guests to play video games. They are bringing out the basketballs, lawn darts and croquet sets for guests who like to be outdoors. With more to do, many guests are staying longer, making all of the time and money spent in planning the wedding more worthwhile. While some couples opt for the traditional reception dinner and dancing, others are going for a more laidback atmosphere, providing a wide range of activities for guests to take part in. The choice is yours. You can throw in some ice breakers amid dinner and dancing, or you can go all out and provide games and activities from beginning to end. Consider the needs of your guests and plan accordingly. By Tresa Erickson With this ring Wedding rings come in all styles, and new designs are produced every year, providing brides with endless choices. Here is a brief look at some of the latest trends. While round brilliant cuts were once the norm for wedding rings, you’ll find a wide range of cuts today. Some of the more popular ones include the emerald cut, which has a vintage appeal and makes the stone appear larger than it is, and the pear cut, which also has a vintage appeal and works well with smaller carat stones. Cushion cut is also popular. The large facets can really make a stone shine. Wedding ring settings have also changed. Halos continue to be popular. In this type of setting, a border of smaller stones frames a larger stone in the middle, making it appear larger. Double halos feature even more brilliance with two borders of smaller stones framing the larger stone in the middle. Floral halos are also popular and feature a border of smaller flower-like stones framing a larger stone in the middle. For active brides, a bezel setting is ideal. In this type of setting, a metal rim showcases the stone in the middle and holds it securely in place. For brides looking for something different, there are a number of options, including bypass settings, twisted settings and the eastwest setting, in which an oval, marquise or emerald cut stone is set horizontally. Any of these is sure to catch the eye. More and more color is also making its way into wedding rings. White diamonds remain popular, but for brides wanting more, there are canary yellow diamonds, cognac diamonds, champagne diamonds and more. Some rings even feature gemstones, a white diamond surrounded by sapphires or rubies, for example. Bands may or may not be gold. White platinum is hot, and pink gold and blackened metals are options. Mixed metals are popular as well. Picture a diamond perched atop a white and yellow gold twisted band or a stack of eternity bands in various metals. Stacked rings are hot right now, as are vintage styles and organic floral styles. Wedding rings are not the only area designers are focusing on. Bridal jewelry in general continues to evolve, with larger, bolder hair accessories and necklaces now available, including shoulder necklaces that stretch across the neck and shoulder blades. Whether you choose to follow the trends or create your own is up to you. It is your wedding after all. You should wear jewelry that appeals to you. Page 22 HAPPENINGS September 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com Flower Girl Alternatives Some brides simply cannot envision their walk down the aisle without a little girl dressed to the nines strewing rose petals before them. They bestow the honor on a young friend or family member, and more often than not, it goes well. Other brides are not keen on the idea of having children in their wedding or have no real good candidates to serve as their flower girl. Lucky for them, there are other options. A well-trained pet can make a great flower girl, or ringbearer, for that matter. Who wouldn’t enjoy the sight of a bride’s beloved Pomeranian pup walking down the aisle in a lacy floral collar? No petals would be strewn, but for venues that do not allow the practice, having a pet for a flower girl might be ideal. Exotic pets may serve as flower girls as well, providing they can be escorted, carried or rolled down the aisle. For pets willing to be dressed up, there are dozens of formalwear styles available from dresses and tuxedos to hats, veils and dressy collars and leashes. Performers are another option. Brides interested in making a spectacular entrance can hire a juggler, acrobat, clown, etc. to serve as their flower girl. Who wouldn’t enjoy receiving a rose from a ballet dancer pirouetting down the aisle or a daisy pulled from a magician’s hat? Flower girl performers work rather well for themed weddings, especially in venues that do not permit petals to be thrown. Guests may also serve as flower girls. Baskets or bags of flower petals can be placed randomly among the seating, attached to the ends of pews or handed out at the guestbook. Whatever the method of delivery, guests will have access to flower petals to scatter down the aisle. For venues that do not allow petals to be strewn, guests may blow bubbles, ring miniature bells or sing softly. Brides just need to make sure they note in the program what guests are to do with the items provided. Brides who have too many people to choose from may want to select a group of kids to walk down the aisle in place of a flower girl or ringbearer. Who wouldn’t take great delight in a 10-year-old pulling a small red wagon with his two younger sisters in it? Small children’s choirs or junior bridesmaids are other options. These are just some of the alternatives to the flower girl tradition. With some thought, brides are sure to come up with ideas of their own. By Tresa Erickson Best Wedding Ever Searching the internet for Best Wedding Ever brings up a few unmentionable events, but not surprisingly, the majority of events involve laughter. Is it possible to have fun at a wedding? Well, yes. You just have to keep your stress level down. How in the world do you keep stress out of your wedding day? After all you’ve done to make this the best day ever, how can it possibly be stress-free? You’re going to have to make some choices. When it’s all been said and done, what really matters? Your attitude. If you are, by nature, an uptight person, the challenge is on. However, with a bit of pre-planning, you can prevent some of the probable frenzy and lessen negative reactions. If possible, have a paid (or unpaid) wedding coordinator who can roll with the punches, ’cuz the punches are going to come. Where’s the cake? The caterer forgot the cake! Send someone to a nearby grocery store to get already prepared desserts and ask a creative friend to display them festively. If the cake fell, don’t scream. It happens. Find that creative friend to remove the cake to the prep area to salvage pieces and place them neatly on plates. (A discreet photo of the mess will one day make you laugh.) Hopefully, your wedding officiant has a sense of humor and can distract attention from unlit candles, children’s antics, a misplaced ring, germ-spewing coughs, boredlooking groomsmen, birds flying amidst the chandeliers, or eyeburning odors among the attendants. Select a few even-tempered guests to quell any possible arguments among exes. Get a good night’s rest before the wedding. Moods alter quickly with sleep deprivation. Limit alcohol availability. A couple choices of wine and maybe a light beer could suffice during the reception. Be sure to have enough hungersatisfying food; growling stomachs can cause the natives to get quite restless. Even “filler food” among hors d’oeuvres can placate a voracious appetite. Not to be undervalued is a quickwitted, humorous (not cheesy) DJ who can spin the atmosphere into laughter. While you and your new spouse are greeting your guests, the DJ is filling the air with celebratory sounds. All is well. Carry on. It’s pretty hard to have the best wedding ever when people are tense, grouchy and rude. When that person is the bride or groom, well now… So, lighten up, prepare as well as you can, then make the best of any situation. Throw cares to the wind and laugh. This is your day — hopefully your best day ever! By Ann M. Bare Swimmer finds wedding ring lost in channel 17 years earlier A swimmer in a British Columbia channel found a ring that hade been dropped into the water by a man 17 years earlier. Penticton police released a statement seeking the owner of a ring found in the Penticton Channel by a local swimmer, and that the ring was engraved with the names Stephanie and Noel. The statement came to the attention of Noel Nissen's fatherin-law. "My father-in-law reached out to me. He had seen an article on another news site and sent it my way saying, 'Is this yours?'" Nissen told CBC News. Nissen said he had lost his wedding ring in the channel 17 years earlier. "That ring was lost so long ago. I was just in complete shock," he said. Nissen said he and some friends had spent the day at the channel and he didn't realize until getting back to his car that the ring was missing. He said the ring, which was returned to him just in time for his 20th wedding anniversary with wife Stephanie, remains in great condition. "You wouldn't believe how good of a shape it's in after 17 years in the channel. I would have thought for sure that it would have been worn down from years of water and sand going over it," he said. your bridal guide

www.hap2it.com September 21, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 23 Thank you Whether your wedding party consists of two people or 12 people, it is tradition to show your appreciation for everyone who participates with a small gift. Gifts can range from jewelry for the ladies and cufflinks for the gentlemen to something more personal like books or CDs. Here are some tips to assist you in your shopping. Make a list. Write down the names of everyone in your bridal party—the maid of honor and best man, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the junior bridesmaids and groomsmen, the candlelighters, the flower girl and ringbearer, the ushers, etc. Ideally, you should purchase or make a gift for everyone who takes part in your wedding. If you cannot, you may want to limit the gifts to the main members of the wedding party, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, for example. Once you know the number of gifts you need to purchase, you can set a budget. Gifts need not be expensive. Setting a limit of $5 to $10 per person will suffice, though, if you wish, you can spend more on select members of your bridal party. If your maid of honor and best man have really gone above and beyond the call of duty, you can purchase them a somewhat more expensive gift. Just make sure you don’t go overboard and create envy among your wedding party. Try to get everyone the same number of gifts in the same price range when at all possible. With a budget set, you can start thinking about what to buy. You can go the traditional route and select gifts pertaining to your big day—earrings to match the dresses and ties to go with the suits. If at all possible, try to select gifts that will work not only for the wedding but for other events as well. You can go the personal route and select gifts that reflect the recipients’ tastes—a doll for the flower girl and some comic books for the ringbearer. You can go the humorous route and select gag gifts for everyone on your list. You can take the convenient route and purchase gift cards for everyone on your list. You can do away with individual gifts altogether and buy a group gift, such as group passes to a local sporting event or an attraction at your destination wedding. Once you have some idea of what to buy, you can start the shopping. You can shop almost anywhere for gifts—locally and online. Just remember to take into account any shipping delays and fees involved with purchases online. Don’t be afraid to shop for deals. There’s no harm in saving a buck here and there. You might even save enough to throw a little pizza party for everyone. Who wouldn’t want to get together a few weeks before the big day to hang out, chat and open a few gifts? Presentation is everything. Wrap the gifts you purchase, attach a handwritten note and find the appropriate time to deliver them. Many brides and grooms choose to hand out gifts at the rehearsal dinner; this works particularly well for gifts intended to be used at the wedding. For other, more personal gifts, especially those that vary widely in price, it might be best to hand those out individually at times convenient to the recipients. Again, you do not want to create envy with your gifts. With any luck, the bridal party will not compare notes. Selecting the right gifts for your bridal party takes time and thought. Put forth the effort, and the smiling faces will make it all worth it in the end. By Tresa Erickson092123

Page 28 HAPPENINGS September 21, 2023 www.hap2it.com September 21, 2023 through September 27, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Right now, your thoughts could revolve around your personal appearance, demeanor or how your reputation may affect your social life. Don’t let the reactions of others make you feel self-conscious. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Project confidence in all your current successes. Feel free to brag a little and showcase your talents when you can. Sales jobs might seem to like a glove, but the most important thing to sell might be yourself. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Earning the credentials you may need could be taking longer than you first anticipated. Try not to feel disappointed if you sense a lack of family support. You might have a crowd of friends ready to cheer you on. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Your friendly approach could persuade others that you may be the right person for extra responsibilities. If past mistakes come back to haunt you, try not to worry. Be fully accountable and you can turn criticism into assets. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Put key financial decisions on hold for now. Even the best researched and prepared people can still hit a snag if the conditions are not optimal. The spotlight could be on your trustworthiness, charm, and great attitude. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Hurt feelings can’t be repaired with just gifts. Look into their eyes and make sincere amends. They do not have to forgive, but they might be more likely if you show them your heart instead of your wallet. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You can accomplish more in the future if you exert a little extra effort now. Follow through on your projects even if you feel discouraged by possible setbacks. The key to success is usually found in perseverance. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Your rock-solid business skills could be in high demand currently. By spending some time with other ambitious go-getters, you can expand your skillset and broaden your network of allies or supportive friends. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Now might not be the best time to discuss family drama with your friends or challenge authority figures. Remain cooperative and discreet and you can increase your financial base. Think things through before making a move. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The only way to save time is to use every moment as efficiently as possible. Wait for the most powerful timing for your biggest initiatives, try not to fret over the little details, and take big steps towards your goals. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Do your best to avoid trouble by remaining diplomatic in group situations. Now may not be a favorable time to make new investments. If you find yourself in a tricky situation it might be best to take a step back. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Life can be messy and complicated, but true and loyal friends could get you through. Bouncing from loyalty to loyalty may be damaging to your trust-worthy reputation. Let those you care about know you will not walk away. "I have no words to express my deepest apologies to anyone I have hurt and, of course, to our incredible team who works on the show and has made it what it is today. We really tried to find our way forward. And I truly hope for a resolution for the entire industry very soon." Last week, Barrymoreannouncedthat she supports the four-month-old strike, but would resume taping so other people who work on the show could get back to work. "Stole the thunder!” In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Nick Lachey of boy band 98 Degrees joked about “how annoyed” his band were after hearing *NSYNC were making their return to music shortly after his band announced their comeback. The band then replied with a more serious answer, with Drew Lachey adding, “When one succeeds, we all succeed. Because we're all kind of like us, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, we're all clumped into the same, into the same kind of pile there. So, if one's elevated, it elevates everybody.” "When I first read Miriam Margolyes' pejorative account of our scene inLittle Shop of Horrors, I was surprised. My memory is that we had a good communication as professional actors. But when it is implied that I harmed her or was in some way careless about doing the stunts, I have to object. I remember taking EXTREME caution regarding the fake punch -- the same caution I would use with any similar scene." As the most recent actor to face allegations of past behavior, comedy legend Steve Martin denies abusive behavior actress Miriam Margoyles accuses him of during filming the 1986 film, Little Shop of Horrors. "I was hit all day by doors opening in my face; repeatedly punched, slapped and knocked down by an unlovely and unapologetic Steve Martin -- perhaps he was method acting -- and came home grumpy with a splitting headache," Margolyes wrote of Martin. "The reason I started producing was because I didn't want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever was already established before me and were the guys at the time, or Leo (DiCaprio) to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it. So I was always proactive in trying to find material and things that I could produce, that I knew was right for me, create my own destiny."
