WHAT A CITY!Yakov SmirnoffMay 29 & 30Get Tickets at050726The Back Story to Yakov’s Kenosha AppearanceAfter years of attempting to bring legendary comedian Yakov Smirnoff to the Kenosha Comedy Club our opportunity finally materialized. His agent informed us that Yakov, who normally avoids cold weather dates, would be in Chicago for a Saturday testimonial dinner and would be available for one, and only one, 4 pm show on Sunday, December 21. Needless to say, we jumped on the date and what transpired with his performance was magic, pure magic, ending with a standing ovation. After the show, Yakov confessed to us that immediately after he had committed to our date he had second thoughts, regrets that he had accepted our offer. However, he was so moved by the enthusiasm and warmth of the crowd that he realized our community is different, something special. The feelings seem to be mutual with an overwhelming response from fans who were in the audience that cold December afternoon and here’s what a few of them had to say after his performance.“We had a great time, and Yakov Smirnoff is definitely worth going to see again.” Beth Bell“Yakov is hilarious and witty and pure comedy gold. One of the most laugh-out-loud performances I’ve seen in a long time.”Serena Gapko“It was great to see a legend in action! Timelessly brilliant and funny.” Rose Mattax“We loved Yakov’s laugh-out-loud comedy and his heartwarming stories. He was funny, engaging and high energy. What a treat to be able to see him in Kenosha.” Jennie Tunkiez

Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 28, 2026 www.hap2it.comKenosha native NathanGreno may live in LosAngeles now, but Wisconsinstill feels like home.“Every time we visitKenosha,” Greno saidrecently while discussing hisnew Netflix animated feature“Swapped,” “I always thinkof home as Kenosha.”That hometown connectionremains a defining part ofGreno’s story, even aftermore than two decades in theanimation industry and acareer that has taken himfrom southeastern Wisconsinto the upper ranks ofHollywood filmmaking. Now, Greno is celebrating therelease of Swapped, anambitious animated featurefrom Skydance Animationand Netflix that blendswhimsical creatures, majorHollywood talent and anemotional message centeredon empathy andunderstanding. The project representsroughly seven years ofGreno’s life and marksanother major chapter in acareer that began with anenormous leap of faith. After dropping out of collegeto take a job at Disney, Grenospent more than 20 years atthe legendary animationstudio before making adramatic career move in 2018to join the then-emergingSkydance Animation. It was a difficult decision forsomeone who admittedDisney was virtually the onlyprofessional world he hadever known.“A lot of what Swapped isactually about is kind ofexperiencing things outsideof your comfort zone,” Grenosaid. “Experiencing thingsoutside of your bubble.”That theme became deeplypersonal.Leaving Disney for a newerstudio mirrored the emotionaljourney at the heart of thefilm itself — a story aboutlearning to understandpeople, or in this casecreatures, who seem entirelydifferent from ourselves. The film stars Oscar-winnerMichael B. Jordan, JunoTemple and Tracy Morganand unfolds in a fullyanimated world populatedentirely by original speciesand imaginative creatures. At the center of the story is asmall creature known as a“puku,” voiced by Jordan.Rather than creating atraditional animated animalworld in which every speciescommunicates seamlessly,Greno and his teamintentionally designeddifferences and barriers intothe universe of the film.Different species speakdifferent languages. Somecreatures resemble smallwoodland animals, whileothers are towering plant-likebeings resembling walkingredwoods.“What in the world does thistiny little puku have to dowith these giant walkingredwoods?” Greno said whileexplaining the movie’s visualphilosophy. “Apparentlynothing. But in our world, Ifeel like we really are allconnected.”That idea — recognizingcommon humanity despiteobvious differences —became the emotional enginedriving the movie.Greno said the story emergedduring a time when societyincreasingly feels fracturedand people often isolatethemselves inside ideologicalor social bubbles.“When I was a kid, theKenosha News showed up onour front porch, and that’swhere we got our newsfrom,” he said. “Nowadays, especially on social media, you can tailor your news tospeak to you the way youwant it.”The result, he believes, is aculture increasingly quick todivide itself.“There’s this thing where it’slike, ‘I’m right,’ and not onlyis the other person wrong, butthey’re the enemy,” Grenosaid. “I don’t really see theworld like that.”While Swapped delivers itsthemes through humor, action and colorfulanimation, Greno said thefilm ultimately asksaudiences to reconsider howthey view those who seemdifferent from them.“We’re quick to seedifferences,” he said. “But atthe end of the day, weactually have more incommon than maybe we’requick to find.”That message also resonatedTo hear more from Nathan Greno, tune in to HappeningsQ&A at 10:20am on Monday, June 8th. AM1050 WLIPFrom Kenosha to the big screen:Nathan Grenoʼs creative evolutionSummers in Kenosha By Nathan Greno One of my favorite memories of growingup in Kenosha in the 1980s is how endlesssummer felt. Back then, life wasn’tscheduled through phones or apps — itwas measured by bike rides, arcade tokens, movie tickets, and games of kick-the-canuntil dusk. My brother and I would spendentire afternoons at Market Square Mall, catching movies before disappearing intoFunway Freeway just a few steps away, surrounded by flashing arcade games andpinball machines. I’d walk with mygrandparents to Boy Blue on RooseveltRoad for soft-serve dipped in that hardchocolate shell, and my mom would driveme to The Comic Emporium, where I’dspend hours flipping through long whiteboxes of comic books while dreamingabout the “grail” books behind the counter.I’d go with my dad to Tenuta’sDelicatessen & Liquors, where he boughtthe best soppressata and muffuletta while Ihunted for pistachio cannoli. Summernights meant the Keno Drive-In — lawnchairs, bug spray, and huge speaker boxeshanging off rolled-down windows. Andevery kid knew the universal rule: whenthe streetlights came on, you’d betteralready be racing home on your bike. What stays with me now isn’t just theplaces themselves — many of them aregone — but the feeling of them. WisconsinDells felt like another universe back then:Tommy Bartlett’s Robot World, riveradventures on the original Ducks, giantlumberjack breakfasts at Paul Bunyan’sCook Shanty with donuts already waitingat the table. Kenosha Cohorama lit up thelakefront with carnival rides and music.Big Star and The Spot weren’t just burgerstands — they were social territories, littlekingdoms defined by what part of townyou were from. (I grew up on the SouthSide. You can do the math.)Looking back now, I realize I was livinginside what would become “the good olddays.” That’s what I carry with me now —not just nostalgia for places thatdisappeared, but a reminder to appreciatethe summers we’re living through today, because these are the memories we’ll lookback on one day and wish we could stepinto again. story continues on page 12Cover Story_9x.qxp_COVER STORY 5/26/26 2:02 PM Page 1

The season isassociated with blockbuster releases, packed theaters, andmajor studio marketing campaigns. The modern idea ofthe summer blockbuster took shape in the 1970s withfilms like Jaws and Star Wars, which demonstrated thata widely released, heavily promoted movie could becomea cultural phenomenon during the warmer months whenschools are out and audiences have more leisure time.Today, summer movie season is dominated by large-scalefranchise films, superhero adventures, action spectacles, animated family movies, and sequels tied to recognizableintellectual property. Studios often save their biggestproductions for this period because audiences are morelikely to attend theaters in groups, making summer aprime time for record-breaking box office performances. 1. They oftenhave to endure lengthy and costlylegal battles to get the squattersout.Shelton eventually reclaimed hismother's house and has used theskills he honed in that situation tosubsequently complete more than100 other interventionsnationwide. The show uses actual footage, notre-enactments, of Shelton and histeam, confronting the squatters, knowing they won't contact lawenforcement because they don'thave a legal leg to stand on.\"This is not TV for me. Unlike liveaction directors often depictedbarking commands from behind acamera, animation directorsoperate more like conductorscoordinating hundreds of artists, performers and technicians.“I’m the keeper of the story,”Greno explained. That means guiding teams ofanimators, editors, layout artistsand actors toward a unifiedcreative vision while relyingheavily on their expertise.“The best way to create anything, especially in animation, is a teamsport,” he said. “You surroundyourself with people that are betterthan you.”That collaborative mindset hasdefined much of Greno’s career. It also helped ease his transitionfrom Disney to Skydance, wherehe reunited with former Disneyand Pixar legend John Lasseterafter Lasseter later joined thecompany. For Greno, the move validated theinstincts that pushed him to leavehis longtime creative home andembrace something new.Today, with Swapped nowstreaming on Netflix and anotherproject already under way, Grenofinds himself in one of the busiest— and most rewarding — periodsof his career.Still, despite premieres in NewYork and collaborations with someof the entertainment industry’sbiggest stars, Greno remainsunmistakably tied to his Wisconsinroots. While discussing the movie withHappenings, he casuallyreferenced the old Sears catalogfrom childhood Christmas wishlists and spoke enthusiasticallyabout returning home to visitCaptain Mike’s.“I love Kenosha,” he said simply. That connection remains central towho he is — not just as afilmmaker, but as a storyteller. For all the fantasy worlds, animated creatures and Hollywoodproductions that now define hiscareer, Greno still sounds verymuch like someone shaped bysoutheastern Wisconsin values:humility, hard work, collaborationand community. And as Swapped reachesaudiences around the world, thosehometown influences may be partof what gives the film its emotionalcore.By Gary SchneebergerGrenocontinued from page 4Cover Story_9x.qxp_COVER STORY 5/26/26 2:02 PM Page 2

Itis chronicled throughout humanhistory, across all cultures. With a declaration from the WorldHealth Organization, Chile justbecame the first country in theAmericas and the second countryin the world (after Jordan in 2024)to be officially declared leprosyfree. That means it's been morethan 30 years since the countrysaw a locally acquired case of thebacterial infection, which candevelop slowly over up to 20years, manifesting as painlesslesions or lumps on the skin.In the United States, leprosy (alsoknown as Hansen's disease, afterGerhard Armauer Hansen, whodiscovered the causative bacteriumin 1873) is rare, withapproximately 150 to 250 newcases reported annually. While nothighly contagious, cases of leprosyhave more than doubled in thesoutheastern U.S. over the lastdecade, particularly in centralFlorida, where it may now beendemic.Fortunately, the disease is curableusing a cocktail of antibiotics —and roughly 95% of all people arenaturally immune.Body of KnowledgeApproximately one in five humanscarries the particular geneticcombination that allows them toproduce and/or smell S-methylthioacrylate and S-methyl3-thiopropionate, the two aromaticchemical compounds in asparagusthat produce that particular odorlater excreted in urine. Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 28, 2026 www.hap2it.comNorthern Italy’s seductivelybeautiful Lakes District – in theshadow of the Alps – seemsheaven-sent for communing withnature. Though just an hour northof Milan, this area feels a worldaway from the business and bustleof Italy’s second city.In this romantic region, wistful19th-century villas are overgrownwith old vines, while stunted palmtrees appear to be held againsttheir will, this far north. And vistasare made-to-order for daydreamersand poets. In fact, it was earlynature lovers (who wrote andpainted here) who put this area onthe tourist map in the 1800s.Visitors have several lakes tochoose from – Lake Garda, LakeMaggiore, and others. While eachhas its charms, my favorite is LakeComo. It offers the best mix ofaccessibility, scenery, sightseeing, and relaxation, with a heady whiffof aristocratic old days.Lake Como is lined with luxuriousvillas, crowned by snow-cappedmountains, and busy with fleets oflittle ferries darting from one cutetown to another. The most famoustown is Bellagio, the selfproclaimed \"Pearl of the Lake\" – acombination of old-worldclassiness and new-world luxury.Steep steps rise from theharborfront up to a smattering ofsun-splashed squares. With spendyfive-star hotels and high-endshopping, Bellagio pleases wellheeled travelers. While a part of me enjoys the“tramp in a palace” feeling I get inBellagio, my ideal Lake Comohome is Varenna. Easily accessibleby train from Milan, Varennapacks its roughly 700 residentsinto a compact townscape on theless-developed side of the lake.Individual homes are defined onlyby their pastel colors, and the oldtown has no streets – justcharacteristic stepped lanes. Thepasserella– a lakeside promenadeconnecting the ferry dock with theold town center – is a fine place tostroll. On Lake Como, villa front doorsface the lake to welcome visitorsarriving by boat. Many villas areowned by the region’s“impoverished nobility.” Bred andraised not to work, they eventuallywere unable to pay for the upkeepof their sprawling houses. Whilesome villas have been bought bythe region’s nouveaux rich (or byGeorge Clooney), others havebeen transformed into hotels orsightseeing attractions. For garden lovers, Villa Carlotta isthe best – especially in spring, when many of its flowers are inpeak bloom. But the dreamiestestate is Villa del Balbianello, which perches on a promontorynear the village of Lenno and wasfeatured in the movies CasinoRoyale and Star Wars: Episode II.Built at the end of the 18thcentury, on the remains of an oldFranciscan church, the villareflects the exotic vision of its lastowner, explorer Guido Monzino. The real masterpiece here is theterraced garden and splendidloggia, where the architecture andlandscaping idyllically caress theland as it slopes down to the water.Though it lacks the cozy charm ofLake Como, Lake Maggiore is asuitable backup destination. Thebest part of any visit here is awander through the exotic gardensand elaborate villas built by thewealthy Borromeo family, wholovingly turned several of thelake’s islands into retreats.Your handy transportation hub forthese islands is the resort town ofStresa. While I find it generallylacking in character, it does have afine waterfront promenade andstately 19th-century lakesidehotels dating back to when thistown was on the Grand Tourcircuit. Stresa is famous for itsGrand Hotel des Iles Borromées,which served as an infirmaryduring World War I, hosting arecovering Ernest Hemingway. The writer later returned to thehotel, setting part of his novel AFarewell to Arms here. But Stresa is mainly worthwhile asa jumping-off point for LakeMaggiore’s garden islands. Thebest one is Isola Bella, dominatedby a palatial villa boasting a grandhall with an 80-foot-high dome, paintings from the Borromeofamily’s private collection, and an18th-century grotto that’sdecorated from ceiling to floorwith shell motifs and black-andwhite stones. The terracedBaroque gardens, with theBorromeo family unicorn sittingon top, give the island the look ofa stepped pyramid from the water. The other main Borromean islandsare Isola Madre, featuring the firstBorromeo palace – dark andsomber with a huge collection ofdolls and exquisite 17th-centurymarionette theater sets – and IsolaPescatori, the smallest and mostresidential of the three, with acouple of seafood restaurants, picnic benches, views, and, blissfully, nothing to do but relaxand daydream. While you can visit Italy’s lakes asa day trip from Milan, Irecommend spending the night. You’ll really feel the romance ofEurope while strolling awaterfront promenade at twilight. As you pass under wisteriadrenched villas and lovers lost ineach other’s eyes, you’llunderstand why poets, artists, andtravelers have long swooned forthis region.By Rick StevesNatural poetryin Italyʼs LakesDistricttravel Lake Como is lined with luxurious villas, crowned by snow-capped mountains, and busy with fleets of little ferries darting from one cute town to another.Travel_9x.qxp_TRAVEL KEN 5/26/26 3:18 PM Page 1GO AHEAD... OverlordSource: Amazon (includes pre-orders)The Mandalorian and Grogu, now intheaters, turns the first live-action StarWars TV series into a fast-paced cinematicadventure that makes strong use of IMAXspectacle. Set after the fall of the Empire, the film follows the Mandalorian — voicedby Pedro Pascal and physically portrayedby Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder— as he hunts Imperial fugitives alongsideGrogu, whose Force abilities andirresistible charm lighten even thefranchise’s most dramatic moments. The opening sequence sends Mando to a snowy mountain outpostguarded by towering AT-AT walkers reminiscent of The Empire StrikesBack. Seeing the machines loom overhead in IMAX is undeniablythrilling. The familiar theme by Ludwig Göransson now carries thesame instant recognition as John Williams’ original Star Wars music.Mando’s new mission comes from Colonel Ward, played by SigourneyWeaver. He must travel to Nal Hutta and return Rotta, the nephew ofJabba the Hutt, in exchange for information on Commander Coyne. Theoversized Hutts benefit from the IMAX scale, though the subtitles canawkwardly dip below sightlines in crowded theaters. The film’s action scenes are strongest when they combine combat withcharacter stakes. Rotta, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, is an arenafighter who doesn’t want rescuing, forcing Mando to defend himselfwithout harming his target. Creature attacks and citywide chaos addenergy, though some chase scenes feel overly reliant on digitalbackdrops and screen-heavy effects.Grogu remains the emotional center. The puppet character still waddles, climbs awkwardly, and communicates through baby-like sounds, yetevery gesture lands. The tiny Anzellan droidsmiths are scene stealers aswell.Though episodic in structure, the film delivers an entertaining, lighterhearted Star Wars adventure and suggests these characters may workeven better on the big screen than in streaming form.By Fred TopelMovie review: 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' a fun cinematic episodeThe Mandalorian and Grogu is a sequel to the Disney+ series TheMandalorian, which follows the adventures of the bounty hunter DinDjarin (Pedro Pascal), aka the Mandalorian, and his young apprenticeGrogu. Grogu, who is largely portrayed by a puppet designed by LegacyAffects, became an instant fan favorite upon his debut, inspiringmerchandise, memes and more. In his honor, here's a list of seven otherfilms featuring beloved puppet characters.Star Wars: The Empire Strikes BackFirst introduced in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), thecharacter Yoda was brought to life by a puppet performedand voiced by Frank Oz in The Return of the Jedi(1983). Hailing from the same species as Grogu, Yoda isan iconic, diminutive green character with pointed ears and three-digithands. He was a wise Jedi mentor to both Obi-Wan Kenobi and LukeSkywalker. Yoda was portrayed with digital effects in later films.GremlinsReleased in 1984, the comedy horror film starsZach Galligan and Phoebe Cates as a pair ofyoung people who must fend off a group ofcute, mischievous creatures who transform intolarge and violent \"gremlins\" when exposed towater or allowed to feed after midnight.E.T. the Extra-TerrestrialSteven Spielberg directed the 1982 sci-fi fantasy filmstarring Henry Thomas as a young boy who helps thealien creature \"E.T.\" find his way back to his home planet.E.T. was a hit upon its release, becoming the highestgrossing film of all time for the next 11 years, andreceiving nine nominations at the 1983 Academy Awards. The Dark CrystalThe Dark Crystal is a dark fantasy film directed by Jim Henson and FrankOz, the first live-action film to feature an all-puppet cast, created byHenson and his studio. www.hap2it.com May 28, 2026 HAPPENINGS Page 25May 28 , 2026through June 3, 2026ARIES (March 21-April 19): Today begins May’s run up to the biggest jackpot days so far for 2026. The most powerful days aren’t here yet, but there’s more favor and assistance in the Universal stars that there has been for more than two weeks.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Free yourself up to move toward your dreams if you’ve been dealing with pessimism or apathy. The river perpetually flows but you’ll stay stuck hiding in a backwater. The next few weeks could make a big difference.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If your intuition and nervous system sign off, you should be safe to share your heart. Don’t ever discount feedback from either one of your best gatekeepers. Find a path forward that makes sense.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Regardless of what you may want to believe, the track record will tell the tale better than spin and promises. Always believe patterns over words. A collab with a friend could move mountains.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): The heart can open doors the ego never can. Get out of pride and place emphasis on what really matters — connection and commitment. A broader path ahead could begin to be seen through the fog.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Wisdom is a better basis for partnership than illusion or arrogance. A partner, or you, might pass through these portals in sequence today. Be patient, this could feel like a lot for a few hours.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Take your best shot based on your gut assessment, but don’t beat yourself up if things don’t go as planned. Give the situation time to work itself out a bit more, then come back to it again.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): If you are single, it’s uncertain whether you could meet someone worthwhile or just meet posers. Trust your intuition. If you are in individual soulmate transits, you could meet a soulmate.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): A few rocky hours on the home front should pass by quickly, leaving a calmer vibe behind. Approach a task with the simplest fix that will also comprehensively solve the problem.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Despite upward-angling stars, communications could become extremely garbled and emotional today. Likely it would be better to put a pin in it and try again tomorrow. Combine the creative with the practical.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): False confidence is off-putting while genuine humility is beloved and relatable. Just be yourself, you don’t need to be a badass brand. Put a solid plan into motion, today or soon if your individual cycles support this.PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Build confidence through inner work — learn from mistakes, analyze without shame, make amends when called for. The higher your standards for yourself, the stronger your self-respect.ACROSS1 False earnestness6 Sawbuck halves10 “Pencils down”14 World capital once called Thang Long15 Zoom16 Human rights lawyer Clooney17 Bonus feature18 Sea creature who lived across the Strait of Messina from Scylla20 Like good things happening to good people22 Not obviously true23 Objects for separating subjects25 Staffer26 Norman Lear’s specialty30 Establish anew, as authority34 Sandwich cookie35 End of a professor’s address36 Seafood appetizer often seasoned with Old Bay40 Heat quickly41 Mattress option43 Some “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” characters45 Onset of49 Isolated group of employees50 Land of giants in “Gulliver’s Travels”54 Person experiencing the bystander effect, perhaps57 Heroic sister of children’s literature59 Rodentlike features, and a phonetic hint to a segment of 18-, 23-, 36-, and 50-Across61 Ticked off62 Check status63 Cozy retreat64 Truly stuck65 Home of Lucas Oil Stadium, familiarly66 SoCal school67 Snail trailDOWN1 Literary citation abbr.2 Cross with3 “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” Oscar nominee Day4 iRobot products5 Bygone audio format6 Character’s beginning, middle, and end7 Faith founded in Persia8 Paperless Post offerings9 Pianist Rachmaninoff10 Hot sauce from Louisiana11 Website with a STARmeter12 Vote by __13 Otherwise19 Circular shelter21 Beer alternative24 Designer Wang27 Short-cut pasta28 Beer alternative29 Soaks (up)30 Penalizing sorts, for short31 Trade unions for onions?32 Vibe33 Brief “Not sure yet”37 Comedian Lydic38 Chatting on Slack, for short39 Voyagers of 162042 Victim in Clue44 Sister of Regan and Cordelia46 “Iliad” city47 Arcade currency48 Did as instructed51 Shift, for one52 Arcade pioneer53 Phrase beginning a chase scene, maybe54 Slangy “Duh”55 Club light56 Put down58 Journo’s intro60 “The Simpsons” disco guyhoroscopein the stars Congratulations Damian for winning NASCAR.
