Page 4 HAPPENINGS February 8, 2024 www.hap2it.com Feud: Capote vs. the Swans star Molly Ringwald says she believes literary lion Truman Capote turned on his wealthy New York socialite friends because they treated him like an entertaining fool, not a peer. Airing on the FX network and available to stream for Hulu subscribers, the limited series explores the epic falling-out between Capote (Tom Hollander) -- the author of Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood -- and his "Swans" Babe Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart) and Ann Woodward (Demi Moore), whose secrets he laid bare in numerous 1970s magazine articles he intended to be compiled as a book called Answered Prayers. "The character I play is not a Swan," Ringwald, who plays comedian Johnny Carson's exwife, Joanne, said in a recent virtual press conference. "She was really like his last friend." The actress said she understood why the women iced him out after the legendary raconteur publicly divulged their secrets, even though they knew full well how he made his living. "It was such a betrayal because they adored him so much," she added. "What he did was pretty self-destructive. I don't think he wanted to lose their friendships, either." Joanne Carson stayed friends with him because she thought he was brilliant, according to Ringwald. Capote died in her Los Angeles home in 1984 at age 59. "He wrote things about her, too, but she was in love with his genius," Ringwald said. "All writers need somebody in their lives there sort of saying: 'You can do this. You're great.'" Despite their outward affection for him, Truman Capote became resentful of his fellow gossips and benefactors. "I feel like there was maybe a little bit of anger on his part from being a little bit of a court jester," she said. Tom Hollander agreed with that categorization. "Maybe they didn't really think he was one of them and he didn't believe that he was one of them, either," Hollander said. "He was a tourist in their world, and, at some level, they thought he was lucky to be there," he added. "So, when he turned -- or when they felt he turned -- they were vicious because they were like, 'From you? You were the adornment in our house. You are not our equal.'" Diane Lane said Radziwill -- sister of former first lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis -- was particularly wounded by Capote's actions because she helped Capote secure $1 million deal for the film adaptation of In Cold Blood. "I have an extra amount of compassion for the amount of anger that she is accountable for in this story because she did empower him and nurture his growth and was there for a lot of his formative time," Lane said of Radziwill, the influential woman to whom Capote referred as "Big Mama." Naomi Watts said she found no film footage or recordings of Babe Paley as she prepared to play the role, so she relied on the scripts and books about the people involved. "Trying to create a voice and her physicality was something that I had to invent through a multitude of wonderful photographs -- just how her hand was placed, perhaps, or how she held her cigarette," Watts said. Demi Moore said she thinks there was more that tied the women together than their wealth and position. "There was a great desire of beauty and, in an interesting way, I think that there was a great desire for connection with one another," Moore said. "While their lives had certain limitations, I think that they were incredibly expansive in how they were living their lives." By Karen Butler 'Feud' star Molly Ringwald: Swans treated Truman Capote like court jester Naomi Watts, Molly Ringwald, and Demi Moore arrive on the red carpet at FX’s “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans” premiere on January 23 in New York City Born Molly Kathleen Ringwald February 18, 1968 (age 55) Roseville, California Ringwald began her acting career at the age of five, appearing in a stag production of Alice in Wonderland as the Dormouse. Page 6 HAPPENINGS February 8, 2024 www.hap2it.com Chicago Med actor Brian Tee and Boardwalk Empire alum Jack Huston say all of the characters are traumatized, but doing their best to move on from their grief in their new Prime Video drama, Expats. The series is available now. Posthumous and The Farewell filmmaker Lulu Wang created the six-episode series based on Janice Y.K. Lee's novel, Expatriates. It follows seemingly perfect couple Clarke (Tee) and Margaret (Nicole Kidman) -- Americans living in Hong Kong -- whose lives are turned upside down by the disappearance of their toddler. Sarayu Blue plays Margaret's best friend, Hilary, and Huston plays Hilary's husband, David, who is cheating on her with Mercy (Ji-young Yoo), the young former nanny Margaret blames for the loss of her youngest child. "He wants them to be the family they were. It's such a journey," Tee said in a recent Zoom interview. "Everyone deals with such trauma and tragedy in so many different ways. With grief, there are so many different stages and they are all mixed up and out of order and kind of blend," he added. "He's going through so much emotion, yet still trying to hold it all together." Clarke also blames himself for the tragedy that befalls his family since it was his job that brought them to Hong Kong. "That's what makes this character, for myself, so compelling," Tee said. "It was because of him that they moved to Hong Kong and it was because of him that they were expats. Had he not taken those steps forward, would this have happened?" Tee, who is married with a 9- year-old daughter in real life, said he found it easy to relate to Clarke. "He was the one character I connected with on a personal level because we have so many similarities," he said. "Clarke is a father doing his best to be a father and lead with love. Personally, that's what I try to do." Huston, who worked previously with Wang on Posthumous, was eager to work with her again on Expats. "When I got the call, I said 'yes' before even reading it. I was right there. There's nothing you enjoy more in this business than working on something or with someone -- or many people in this instance -- that you really love and respect," Huston said. "That's when you say, 'It's not a job any more,' and you just feel grateful because you really get to explore something and take on a character and go deep. The conversation was never not exciting and interesting -- off camera, as well as on camera." Huston described David as "a perfectly flawed man," haunted by a mysterious past from which he's been running for most of his life. "You realize he could be a little bit of a villain. But then you realize he's going through his own [expletive], as we all are. Humans are flawed. We make mistakes," Huston said. "He's suffering like everybody in this show, and that's sort of the brilliance of it. It shows it from all different perspectives." David feels like an outsider, which is one of the reasons why he is drawn to Mercy, an emotionally damaged woman who is seeking a fresh start in a new land when the series begins. Yoo calls Mercy a "complicated girl who has heard a lot in her life that she is not deserving of love and she won't amount to anything." "I like to say that Mercy -- when presented with two options -- will probably pick the worst one because she doesn't really believe she'll get a good outcome," Yoo said. "So, I'm very protective of Mercy. That was one of the first things i felt -- like i almost needed to shelter her and keep her safe because she just feels injured, and a lot of the show is her learning to heal." Blue noted Hilary's appearance as a "put-together, well presented woman" belies her insecurity and depression. "She is very controlled and seems really sure of herself. She's in these neutral, tightly, perfectly tailored suits and high heels. She's got it all down to a 'T' and I think that we really just watch the unraveling of Hilary," Blue said. "She's at a real culmination point with so many people in her life and you just watch it all fall apart and how she treads that experience." At the opening of the show, Hilary's marriage to Davis is suffering. "Their relationship is fractured and, unfortunately, her closest friendship is also fractured and, by the time we meet Hilary, it's already at a breaking point -- all of it," Blue said. Mercy is dazzled by her employers' beauty and wealth, and hopes their sphere of success will eventually expand to include her. "She believes she is cursed and that bad luck follows her," Yoo said. "She sees Margaret and the Wu family and Clarke and hopes that she can get some sort of good luck through osmosis if she sticks around, that things will turn up for her," she added. "When tragedy hits, I think it just further confirms what she's believed her whole life about herself. Margaret becomes this point of deep regret and also longing." Hilary and Margaret, who live in the same apartment building in Hong Kong, enjoy a very close friendship until Margaret's child disappears and she starts blaming others for their role in the tragedy. "I've seen a lot of friendships. I've been a part of friendships that have fallen apart and it is a part of life as we grow and grow up," Blue said. "One of the things we really see Hilary do in the show is grow up. it's so cool to see a 40- year-old woman grow up. That is actually life, although it is rarely given space for." By Karen Butler Brian Tee, Jack Huston: 'Expats' are traumatized, trying to heal Brian Tee and Nicole Kidman star in the new Amazon Prime original series “Expats” Jack Huston and Ji-young Yoo star in “Expats”

www.hap2it.com February 8, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 11 Personality Versus Dementia A new study, published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia, investigated whether any of the socalled Big Five personality traits (conscientiousness, extraversion, openness to experience, neuroticism and agreeableness) impacted risk of cognitive decline. The scientists looked at data from 44,000 people from eight longitudinal studies, of whom 1,700 developed dementia. People who were conscientious, extroverted and more agreeable had a lower risk of a dementia diagnosis compared to their more negative and neurotic peers, reported STAT. However, the researchers found no link between personality traits and the neuropathology results in autopsies on people's brains after death. One possibility, the study authors wrote, is that traits such as conscientiousness help people perform better on cognitive tests, which is indicative of their ability to cope with the challenges of dementia. Body of Knowledge Gastric acid in the stomach has a normal pH level of 1.5-3.5 — the lower the number, the greater the acidity. Battery acid, by comparison, has a pH of 0, making it capable of dissolving materials such as metal and bone. Water is neutral at 7. Get Me That, Stat! If your spouse has high blood pressure, you're more likely to have it, too, according to new international research. The prevalence of hypertension among married or partnered heterosexual couples over age 50 was highest in England (47%), then the U.S. (38%), followed by China (21%) and India (20%). While high blood pressure is more common in the U.S. and England, the blood pressure link between couples was stronger in China and India. Best Medicine One evening, a man visits his doctor. The doctor asks what's wrong and the man says, "I think I'm a moth." The doctor is chagrined. "You think you're a moth?" he exclaims. "You don't need a doctor. You need a therapist." "I know," replies the man. "I was on my way to see a therapist, but then I saw your light was on." Page 12 HAPPENINGS February 8, 2024 www.hap2it.com If you want to get away from it all when traveling in Greece, head for the Peloponnesian Peninsula. Driving about an hour west of Athens, you cross over the Corinth Canal – a four-mile-long shipping lane neatly sliced through the isthmus that connects the Peloponnese with the rest of Greece – and pass the ruins of ancient Corinth to enter the fabled peninsula. One of my favorite sights is the scenic hill town of Vathia. The eighty-some houses were split north/south into two rival camps, which existed in a state of nearpermanent hostility. Today Vathia is mostly uninhabited. Onceintimidating towers are now held together with buttressing boards and steel cables. The tragic history and rugged landscape provide an evocative backdrop – making hedonism on the Mani coast all the more hedonistic. Kardamyli, a humble beach town, delicately mixes chic hotels and conscientious travelers with real-world Greece. This handy base for exploring the Mani Peninsula works like a stun gun on your momentum. On my last trip, I could have stayed here for days, just eating well and hanging out. It’s the kind of place where travelers plan their day around the sunset. More treats line the coast east of the Mani Peninsula. Monemvasia, a Gibraltar-like rock with a stone town at its base, has ruins all across its Masada-like summit. Its little Lower Town hides on the seaward side of the giant rock, tethered to the mainland only by a skinny spit of land that functions as a causeway. This remarkably romantic walled town is a stony museum of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century. After visiting the town, take a hike to the top – summiting Monemvasia is a key experience on any Peloponnesian visit. Although the town of Sparta has little touristic interest, the nearby site of Mystras has well-preserved Byzantine churches that evoke the grandeur of the Byzantine Empire before it fizzled out. Sparta is a classic example of how little a militaristic society leaves as a legacy for the future. Nothing survives of the city that dominated Greek affairs in the sixth and fifth centuries BC. The town was abandoned in the 13th century, and its buildings dismantled. In 1834, Sparta was reestablished by King Otto, a royal transplant from Germany, who wanted a city of wide boulevards and parks. With its multifaceted history, welcoming people, dramatic ruins, and stunning vistas, the Peloponnesian Peninsula has it all. Yet it is one of least explored parts of Greece. Nearly all the tourists are in Athens and the islands, while the rest of the country casually goes about its traditional business. By Rick Steves The Peloponnese: A peninsula of Greek surprises travel In a far-off corner of the Peloponnese, clan wars left the hill town of Vathia in ruins. American Airlines announced its firstever non-stop flight between Texas and Brisbane, Australia, starting in October. This new service, launching from America's largest hub in Dallas, will allow customers a pathway to Brisbane and the state of Queensland. The company said Thursday it will be the longest non-stop flight in American Airlines' network and utilize the company's newly designed Boeing 787-9 aircraft. The 7,200-mile flight is expected to take 17 hours. The airline also announced new flights to Brazil, Hawaii and Mexico. American said it would be teaming up with Qantas to offer customers more services from Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Vancouver, Canada, to four major gateways in Australia and New Zealand: Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. In addition to the new routes, American plans to expand its current service to popular beach destinations this summer, including to Grand Cayman, Turks and Caicos, and St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. According to the CDC investigation, 123 of the 1,824 passengers on board the Queen Victoria contracted an unknown gastrointestinal illness during the ship's voyage, The cruise ship departed Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Jan. 22 and is expected to go to San Francisco before it ends in Honolulu on Feb. 12. The report also found 16 of the ships 967 crew fell ill. Predominant symptoms include diarrhea and vomiting. Cunard Cruise Line reported crew members responded by isolating sick passengers and crew and increasing sanitation procedures according to the ship's outbreak response plan. "Cunard confirmed that a small number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board Queen Victoria," Cunard said in a statement. "They immediately activated their enhanced health and safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all guests and crew on board." The CDC said its Vessel Sanitation Program is monitoring the situation. The gastro illness report comes just a week after passengers aboard Carnival Cruise Line's Elation ship reported symptoms of the stomach flu after the ship set off from Jacksonville, Fla. The group of current and former employees from Rector A. Jones Middle School in Florence have been playing the lottery together for years, and they have been using the same set of numbers since 2019. "We all taught at the same school at one point or another," a member of the group told Kentucky Lottery officials. "We've got counselors, admins, special-ed teachers, the school nurse ... Some have moved on or retired but we still continue to do it. We've remained buddies for all of these years." The group's organizer discovered the ticket for the Jan. 27 Powerball drawing was a $1 million second prize winner and stashed it in a math textbook. "No one looks in a math book," she said. "I knew it would be safe there ... page 200. I have checked this a thousand times." Each member took home $24,000 after taxes. Kelly Osbourne and Slipknot musician Sid Wilson, Mark Ronson and Grace Gummer, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, and other couples attended the 66th annual Grammys ceremony in Los Angeles. The awards show marked Osbourne and Wilson's red carpet debut as a couple. Osbourne, a television personality and the daughter of Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne, has been with Wilson since 2022. The couple welcomed their first child together, son Sidney, in November of that year. Warm weather forces Michigan to cancel sturgeon season for first time Because of unsafe ice, Michigan's Department of National Resources canceled the state's lake sturgeon fishing season for the first time. The season that takes place on Black Lake in Cheboygan and Presque Isle counties was set to start last Saturday but state outdoor officials worried about marginal ice conditions because of a warmerthan-usual winter. "In addition to protecting the lake sturgeon population, the safety of anglers and staff is critically important," Randy Claramunt, Michigan's DNR fisheries chief said in a statement. "We encourage all anglers across Michigan to use extreme caution while on the ice, as we have been experiencing aboveaverage temperatures." The DNR sets the harvest limit for each Black Lake sturgeon season and officials said they worried about tracking the numbers with the limited number of DNR personnel on the ice this season. The fish are some of the oldest found in the Great Lakes region, and Michigan's DNR has been working to strengthen their population after their numbers declined markedly after the 1800s. Parade planned for oldest living American's 116th birthday The oldest living person in the United States is due to be celebrated by a parade marking her 116th birthday in California. Edith "Edie" Recagno Keenan Ceccarelli, who celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday, will be celebrated Sunday by a drive-by parade at Holy Spirit Residential Care Home in Willits. Ceccarelli, born in 1908, is the oldest living person in the United States and the second oldest living person in the world. Her birthdays since the age of 100 were celebrated with large, town-wide parties until 2021, when the annual celebration was turned into a driveby parade due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Every year at her birthday, we make sure she knows how special she is," lead parade organizer Suzanne Picetti told USA TODAY. Perla Gonzalez, who works at the care home, said Ceccarelli is looking forward to the carrot cake she was promised by family members. "She got very excited when she learned the cake would be carrot cake," Gonzalez said. "She said, 'Oh really, honey?,' and lit up." coast to coast Super Bowl: Buffalo chicken, 7-layer, spinach dips top snack list For many Americans, Super Bowl Sunday is all about the food. In terms of overall food consumption, the annual tradition comes in second only to Thanksgiving. A record 200.5 million U.S. adults plan to tune in to the big game this year. Kansas City and San Francisco are set to battle for the NFL championship trophy on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. An analysis of latest consumer spending data by the National Retail Foundation found 112.2 million people plan to throw or attend a party, and another 16.2 million plan to watch the game at a bar or restaurant. Total spending on food, drinks, apparel, decorations and other purchases for the day is expected to reach a record $17.3 billion, or $86.04 per person. So what are Americans going to eat on Super Bowl Sunday? Dips. Dips and apps has become a staple on Sunday throughout America over the past few years and this year it topped the list for most searched according to Google Trends. Buffalo chicken dip is a favorite, as well as 7-layer dip and spinach dip. Appetizers like pigs in a blanket also dominated searches. Americans love chicken wings. The hunger for chicken wings is so great that the average consumer eats about 300 wings a year. That number could go up next Sunday as 1.45 billion chicken wings are expected to be eaten during Super Bowl LVIII. According to the National Chicken Council, 1.45 billion wings is enough for every man, woman and child in the United States to eat four wings each. If laid end-to-end, those wings would stretch 1/3 of the way to the moon Edie Ceccarelli Kelly Osbourne

I’m so torn up, I can’t even tell you. I’m just trying to hold it in because Carl Weathers was such an integral part of my life, my success — everything about it, I give him incredible credit and kudos. Because when he walked into that room and I saw him for the first time, I saw greatness. But I didn’t realize how great. I never could’ve accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him. He was absolutely brilliant — his voice, his size, his presence, his athletic ability, but, most importantly, his heart, his soul. It’s a horrible loss. He was magic. I was so fortunate to be part of his life. Apollo, keep punching.” While holding back tears on an Instagram video, actor Sylvester Stallone pays tribute to his longtime friend and co-star Carl Weathers, who died last week at the age of 76. Weathers, perhaps best known for portraying Apollo Creed in the first four Rocky films, is also known for memorable performances in the films Predator and Happy Gilmore, as well as TV’s Arrested Development and most recently The Mandalorian. "Someone told me someone was talking ... about me on the streets !!! Do you want to bring it to the court or will you go home crying to your mom like you did last time ??? I'm not sorry !!!" There doesn’t appear to be any peace between Britney Spears and her ex from decades ago, Justin Timberlake. Spears took to social media the day after Timberlake said a few choice words before singing “Cry Me a River” at Irving Plaza in New York City, a song which is believed to be about Spears. “I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely ... nobody,” Timberlake said before the song. "Saddle up the horses,Jesus, 'cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!! Introduce him to all the Okies and sign that boy up for the choir! We're gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend." One of numerous celebrities mourning the recent death of country music singer Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood takes to social media last Tuesday. Keith died Mondayevening at age 62 following a battle with stomach cancer. “Pilaf, the little mouse, is a star. My little teeny tiny companion... She is a treasure, she’s like my little extra heart.” While on a press tour, which actress has taken her 1.5 pound Chihuahua dog with her, seeing the canine occasionally upstage the actress and garner attention for everyone they come across?
