Q. Can you tell us a little bit about you and your family? A. I am a Kenosha native. I've moved around a bit since I graduated high school; Florida, Kentucky but always seem to come back home. I have been married for going on 12 years to a Florida boy and we have two wonderful children together; our tiny CEO's we like to call them. On top of To And From, we have another business called Reliant Home Services, LLC. It is a handyman/home renovation business. I've been a stay at home mom for the last 6 years which has been a huge blessing thanks to my hardworking husband. Before that, I was a hairstylist. But once the kids went into school fulltime, mom needed something to do and To and From just fell into our lap. Q. When did you purchase the gift shop? A. We purchased the business in April of 2024, officially opening in May. I actually had never been in To and From before we thought about purchasing it, but came in to meet the previous owner and fell in love with the vibe and what it had to offer and knew I wanted it and loved even more knowing it was such a well loved store. Q. We understand that you have some great handcrafted locally sourced products you carry, what are those? A. We do, we have a few local people in the store offering Kenosha Map T-shirts and screen prints, hats/beanies, wood crafted items like ornaments, magnets, charcuterie boards, earrings and some trading pins with a group of artists artwork. Q. What is your favorite item in the store right now? A. We love our Canimals, They are stuffed animals in a can that you get out with a can opener. They were a huge hit over Christmas. Q. What is this “Cuss Closet” we hear about? A. Our cuss closet is everyones favorite place in the store. All our adult humored gifts like cards, candles, mugs, socks, dish towels, etc. Q&A with Trista Jablonski, owner of To and From Gift Shop, 5535 Sixth Ave Page 6 Downtown Kenosha 2025, Vol. 18 Issue #1 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

Q: How long have you worked at the museums and what was your previous capacity? A: I've been with the museums for 14 and a half years. I originally started as the volunteer coordinator. After a couple of years, I moved into the special events and marketing department. Over the last several years, my role grew to managing the Visitor Experience department that includes facility rentals, marketing, volunteers and the museum stores. Now I get to work closely with the whole organization and board of directors. Q: What your favorite part your job as the new Director? A: I love working with people. One of the best parts of my job is getting to be able to tell visitors and the community about all of the incredible things our talented staff are doing at the museums. It's also very rewarding to speak with visitors, especially children, and see their excitement in the galleries. Q: There are always exciting activities and programs available at the museums; anything new coming up for 2025? A: We have a great combination of both returning and brand new exhibits and programs coming this year. The KUSD district-wide art show will be open March 15 through April 13 at the Kenosha Public Museum. The variety of artwork and the amazing talent that these kids have - from kindergarten through high school - is mind blowing! After that, the annual Transparent Watercolor Society of America's juried exhibition will be on display May 3- August 3. This is always one of my favorite times of the year. The paintings are some of the best in the country. Q: Our museums get guests from all over the world, how exciting is that? A: Every year we welcome visitors from all over the world. Last year, visitors came from every state except Rhode Island, and from at least 20 different countries. Our staff and volunteers get a kick out of speaking to everyone, and we get really positive feedback about the museums and the community. Q: How many staff members does it take to keep the museums running smoothly? A: We have about 40 staff members and 70 volunteers that keep the three museums running seven days a week. Some staff are experts in museum collections and exhibit curation, some are educators that teach school and adult tour groups, many welcome visitors in our museum stores, and still others keep the facilities clean and maintained. Plus we have administration jobs that take care of marketing, memberships, development and more. My dad, Mike Bjorn, worked for other menswear stores, so he was familiar with the industry when he started the business, Mike Bjorn’s, in 1981 with my mom Judy after saving up their hard-earned money. Their first location was downtown at 614 59th St (currently home to Kindred Kitties). I grew up with the business and have been invested in it my entire life. It’s my parent’s legacy and I’m happy and honored to be a part of it! Bjorn’s is probably the most unique clothing store in the entire country. We specialize in menswear for events of all kinds. We’re known for having an extensive amount of inventory at extremely fair prices. We cater products for anything from a casual dinner outfit to a top hat and tails. Bjorn’s provides personalized customer service that can’t be beat by box stores or online shopping. We provide a welcoming atmosphere for all, with a unique, quirky charm that’s found nowhere else. When if comes to the perfect suit, fit is everything. The guy that buys the expensive suit must tell everyone in the room how much he spent on it. Our suits do the talking for you. The key to maintaining a successful business is dedication and commitment to the highest levels of customer service on all fronts. I am so proud to be a downtown Kenosha business owner. Downtown has a different vibe than the rest of the Kenosha area. We have a strong collection of unique, locally owned businesses and we all seem to share a sense of pride for our little community. We have a rich history throughout Kenosha; Crystal’s has had seven different locations around town. It started in early 1896 by Louis Crystal at 5701 22nd Ave. Through the years, it has been located on 56th Street and next to the First National Bank on Sixth Avenue. When my mother and father, Sam and Joanne, took over the business, they altered the name to S.J. Crystal’s to represent their first names. The earliest memory I have was in the late 1950’s, we were in the building that now holds Lulu Birds from 1963 until the early 80s. At that time, the downtown area was beginning to deteriorate, many of the stores here had already closed or moved west. There were many factors which contributed to the downfall of downtown in the 70s and 80s – the Southport Mall didn’t help. But people’s shopping habits were changing, and many of the old time retailers were retiring or dying off, and their families didn’t want to continue the business. The same could have happened to SJ Crystals, had I not loved the business and wanted to carry on with it. Like many others, we relocated west to Pershing Plaza in the early 80s, but were excited to return to Downtown Kenosha in 2004. I feel like I’m the luckiest man in the world, because I still enjoy coming to work everyday and meeting new people and seeing all the new styles with every season. I find it fun to see the old styles returning and the younger people think these are some new groundbreaking fashion trends. In downtown Kenosha, a new kind of beauty business is making waves. Sallese & Company, 709 56th Street, founded by Chelsea Sallese, is more than just a salon—it’s a communityfocused space that prioritizes health, sustainability, and local collaboration. Chelsea’s journey from stylist to business owner is one of passion, resilience, and a deep commitment to her family and her community. This new venture is a testament to her desire to create a space where beauty and wellness go hand in hand, where clean beauty is celebrated, and where everyone is treated like family. At Sallese & Company, it’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling good too. Chelsea’s vision for the salon is one of warmth, inclusivity, and community. “When people walk in, I want them to feel like they’re part of something,” she explains. “I want them to feel like they’re walking into a family, not just a business. That’s what sets us apart—we’re not just a salon, we’re a space for people to connect, relax, and enjoy themselves.” With an emphasis on eco-conscious beauty practices, Sallese & Company offers a variety of services ranging from haircuts and bridal styling to lash extensions, facial waxing, and more. But what truly makes this salon stand out is its approach to business—everything from the products used to the services offered is centered around sustainability, health, and community. Chelsea’s commitment to clean beauty doesn’t stop at the services she provides. She has carefully selected the products used in her salon to ensure they align with her values. “We only use products that are free from harmful chemicals, parabens, and sulfates. Every product in our salon has been chosen with intention, and we’re constantly researching new options to ensure that we’re offering the best, safest products for our clients,” she says. In addition to traditional salon services, Sallese & Company hosts regular “pop-up” events. These events range from book club gatherings to permanent jewelry and tattoo parties, offering clients a chance to enjoy unique experiences while supporting local businesses. It’s just another way Chelsea is creating a community space where people can connect and be part of something bigger than just a haircut or facial. With its commitment to clean beauty, sustainability, and local collaboration, Sallese & Company is redefining what it means to visit a salon. It’s a space where beauty and wellness meet, where clients are treated like family, and where community is always at the heart of everything they do. Whether you’re in need of a haircut, shopping for eco-friendly products, or attending one of their creative events, Sallese & Company is the place to be. And with Chelsea’s passion and dedication, it’s clear that this is just the beginning. Be sure to follow Sallese & Company on social media to stay up-to-date with their latest offerings, events, and community partnerships. The future is bright for this new business, and we can’t wait to see how it continues to grow and thrive in downtown Kenosha. Have you found yourself driving or walking around Downtown Kenosha wondering what is all this construction about? Let’s take a stroll through some of the developments that are happening as of February 2025. Right now, the one that you most likely have noticed is the future home of The Karrick, a five-story 158 apartment complex on the northwest corner of 56th & 7th Ave (formerly Chase Bank drive through) which is currently closed to traffic from 8th Ave to 54th St. The Karrick is expected to be completed by January 2026 and is the first phase as part of a broader nine block radius (from Sheridan Road to Lake Michigan between 52nd and 56th Streets) development project which is scheduled to have a market hall, retail spaces, hotel, office buildings and a total of possibly up to 1,000 housing units. There’s a 10-story proposed apartment complex in the works on the former site of LaMacchia Travel (618 55th St) as well as a proposed 42 condos on the vacant lot on the corner of 54th St & 6th Ave adjacent to HarborPark. A central park would also be part of the development and would connect the residential buildings with the market and retail spaces. The full project could take a number of years to finalize and may change along the way due to market conditions but it’s safe to say Downtown Kenosha is going to look very different in a couple years. Downtown has changed so much from the days of the mall in the 1970s and 80s to the marina in the 90s to the bustling area that it is today and this new development will really put Downtown Kenosha over the top as a place to live and visit in Wisconsin. The Kenosha Lakeshore BID (Business Improvement District) was created by the City of Kenosha in 1986 to allow businesses to develop, manage and promote Downtown Kenosha. This year the BID board welcomed two new members including Ben Trecroci, owner of Trecroci Realty, and Tina Warner, owner of Millie Bo Peep. The BID board meets each month on the third Tuesday at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Downtown Kenosha at 8:30 am. Meetings are open to the public. Q: Why did you decide to join the BID board? Tina: I joined BID because I truly want to see our downtown succeed. It's an honor to be on a board comprised of an amazing group of people who share that common value. Ben: It's something I had thought about for a couple of years and a few people pushed me to join. Also, I felt I should get more involved in the downtown community that I'm part of every day. Q: What is your favorite part about being a small business owner? Tina: I love being able to build relationships with my customers. I also enjoy being able to help celebrate those big milestones - like providing a gender reveal outfit, picking out the perfect baby shower or birthday gifts, celebrating new grandparents and families, or even "just because!" Ben: I take a lot of pride in my business because I know that people could go anywhere but choose to do business with me, which is a special thing. Q: Why did you originally choose Downtown Kenosha for your business? Tina: My husband James and I both grew up in Kenosha and the downtown area is our favorite. We have so many memories growing up. There's more to do, more to see, and lots to come! We also did some market research and asked the community where they'd like to see us. The majority voted on Downtown Kenosha. Ben: My Dad, Frank Trecroci was an integral part of Downtown Kenosha's development in the 80s and 90s and he decided to set up shop here in about 2000, so after taking over I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Q: What are some goals you would like to see get done during your time on the BID board? Tina: My own personal goal is to get to know my community the best I can. I think when it comes to improving downtown, it really comes down to listening and paying attention to what other business owners hope to see AND what our community hopes to see. From there, owning up and implementing those suggestions and ideas is crucial. Ben: To start, I would like to see more garbage cans and brighter streetlights! Keeping our downtown clean and safe is my number one priority. Q: How do you feel supported by Downtown Kenosha as a business owner? Tina: The downtown community has an overwhelming sense of togetherness. Everyone is rooting for each other and wants to see each other succeed, and that love and support can be felt from all our downtown neighbors. Ben: I really like how everyone seems to be on the same page about wanting to make downtown bigger and better. Everyone wants to collaborate or ask for your input on how they can improve their business. Kenosha, which turned 175 this month, has undergone significant transformation from its roots as a manufacturing hub to a vibrant metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1835, by, among others, Charles Durkee, the onetime congressman and U.S. senator who made his home at Library Park and Seventh Avenue, one which was subsequently moved to 11th Avenue and 61st Street. Kenosha's early economy was driven by industries such as wagon-making, which later evolved into automobile manufacturing, earning the city the nickname “Wagon City.” The city's economic landscape has shifted dramatically over the years, with a notable transition towards a more metropolitan economy, particularly evident in the revitalization of its downtown area. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kenosha thrived as a manufacturing powerhouse. The city was home to several major factories, including those of the Nash Motor Company and the Simmons Mattress Company. These industries provided thousands of jobs and were the backbone of Kenosha's economy. However, by the late 20th century, the decline of American manufacturing began to take its toll. The closure of major factories, such as the Chrysler plant in 1988, led to significant job losses and economic challenges for the city. As the manufacturing sector waned, Kenosha faced the daunting task of reinventing itself. The city's leaders recognized the need to diversify the economy and attract new industries. This shift marked the beginning of Kenosha's transformation into a more metropolitan area. The focus shifted from heavy industry to service-based sectors such as healthcare, education, and technology. The establishment of the University of WisconsinParkside in the 1960s played a crucial role in this transition, providing education and research opportunities that helped to cultivate a skilled workforce. One of the most visible signs of Kenosha's evolution is the revitalization of its downtown area. In the early 2000s, the city embarked on an ambitious plan to breathe new life into its historic downtown. This effort involved the redevelopment of old industrial buildings into modern commercial and residential spaces. The conversion of the historic Kemper Center, once a manufacturing facility, into a cultural and community hub is a prime example of this transformation. The center now hosts events, art exhibitions, and community gatherings, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of downtown Kenosha. The revitalization of downtown Kenosha has also attracted new businesses and residents. The area now boasts a diverse mix of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues, drawing visitors from across the region. The construction of new residential developments, such as the HarborPark neighborhood, has brought an influx of young professionals and families to the area. These new residents have contributed to the growth of a thriving local economy, further solidifying Kenosha's transition to a metropolitan area. The city's commitment to improving its infrastructure and public spaces has also played a significant role in its transformation. The development of the local markets and the expansion of the city's lakefront have created new opportunities for recreation and tourism. Each Saturday, we are lucky to have two markets (Kenohsa Public Market and Kenosha HarborMarket) which have become a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, offering fresh produce, artisan goods, and live entertainment. Kenosha's journey from a manufacturing hub to a metropolitan area is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of its community. The city's leaders have successfully navigated the challenges of economic transition, leveraging the city's historical assets to create a vibrant, diverse, and sustainable economy. The revitalization of downtown Kenosha stands as a shining example of this transformation, showcasing the city's ability to reinvent itself while honoring its rich history. Over the course of its Kenosha’s 175 years, scores of those born here have gone on to become Hollywood stars, from Orson Welles, writer/director/star of Citizen Kane, thought by many to be the best motion-picture in film history; to Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo, best known for portraying Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Kenosha celebrates its 175th anniversary, it looks to the future with optimism and confidence. The city's ongoing efforts to attract new industries, improve its infrastructure, and enhance its quality of life ensure that Kenosha will continue to thrive as a dynamic metropolitan area for generations to come. By 1970, the northern part of Downtown, known as Harborside, was growing old and shoddy. For the previous decade, the 5100 block of Sixth Avenue was known as the “dark street near the harbor.” The Harborside neighborhood had numerous deserted storefronts at the time, and the shops that did still exist were seedy taverns and a tattoo shop. But that wasn’t always the case of course, in 1971, Joseph Hrupka, who operated Hrupka’s Quality Foods with his brother at 5022 Sixth Ave recalls stories of when his father first established his shop in 1914. Then the road, known as North Main Street, was thriving with establishments such as the Schlitz Hotel, Klinker’s Beer Depot, Joerndt Shoe Store, Threinen’s Paint Store, and Rokosi’s Jewelry Shop. By the late 1960’s, Downtown Kenosha had already began the transformation from the bustling center of the city it once was. Like many other mid-sized cities across the country, Kenosha had seen a significant decline in downtown shopping. Many businesses were already moving west to the new, modern shops at Pershing Plaza and Town N County on 75th Street. The grand opening of the Holiday Inn (today’s Wyndham Garden-Kenosha Harborside) in June 1971 was a slight boost for the downtown area at the time. People spoke about 1971 as being a year of rebirth of the downtown area — the number of ships in port in 1971 more than tripled the previous year’s count of 14 to over 50. Kenosha is now known for its rich art community; today we feature a vast number of talents, as well as supporters of their arts. But this wasn’t always the case. In the early 1970’s, Kenosha had its fair share of artists, and they made a solid attempt to bring their talents to the city. One of the most well-known artists at the time in Kenosha was John Goray (1912-1990). Goray, an artist, writer, and occasional actor, also taught art classes at UW-Parkside and Carthage College. In his earlier days, Goray was an artist for Walt Disney in California and was credited as creating Thumper in the 1942 film “Bambi.” He came to Kenosha in 1943. In early 1970, Goray saw the decadence of the Harborside neighborhood as well as the Holiday Inn project being constructed and decided to take advantage of the low rents along northern Sixth Ave. The very first art gallery to land on Sixth Avenue was in the 5036 side of the Graham building (today Copy Center), called New Gallery Two. Racine was the home of New Gallery One. This commercial gallery opened in September 1970 and would inspire Goray to attempt a revitalization of the block. By March, New Gallery Two will transform to the New Morning Gallery and be a cooperative of nearly two dozen local artists, most of them former students of Goray. The 5100 block of Sixth Ave would soon be known as the Harbor West neighborhood, a term coined by an unknown UW-Parkside journalist. The Artists Gallery, located across the street from the Graham Block in the then long empty storefront at 5033 Sixth Ave., was the next to open in February 1971. Goray had a team of artists on hand, including Flashback: The story of Harbor West, 1971-1972 A series of artists and shop owners gather for this photo looking north on Sixth Avenue to promote Harbor West’s Fall Art Fair which took place on September 18, 1971 (photo: Kenosha News) story continues on next page Page 44 Downtown Kenosha 2025, Vol. 18 Issue #1 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

Lynn Obertin, John Farnham, Mary Alice Hammond, Carol Ameche, Ruth Miles, Carolyn Gagliardi, and Elizabeth Diamon, all of whom would share the responsibilities in running the gallery, as well as to expose their artistic works. Goray encouraged friends and former students to follow with shops of their own and to establish an oldtown feel which had been missing from the Downtown area for many years. Very quickly, fellow artists turned entrepreneurs began filling the other empty store fronts with art galleries, antiques, and gift shops. Some of these include art gallery The Blue Mushroom (5035 Sixth), gift and craft shop The Gift Tree (later The Bird Cage, 5023 Sixth), Harborside Antiques (5031 Sixth), and The Quest (Mexican import shop, corner of Sixth and 51st Pl, formerly Anchor Tattoo). In September 1971, the group came together for the Fall Art Fair when the 5100 block of Sixth Ave was closed off for crowds, musicians, and merchants. On Sunday, March 26th, 1972, the artists in the neighborhood held a second outdoor art fair. But the event quickly turned sour. According to reports, Robert Yee (1921-2002), owner of Oriental Inn, 5030 Sixth Ave., was unhappy with the street being closed to potential business and called Kenosha Mayor Wallace Burkee. According to John Goray, Mayor Burkee himself came down to the area to remove the barricades and allow traffic through. Through the Voice of the People section of the Kenosha News, Goray and Yee battled it out. Goray delivered the first attack, although not naming Yee himself or his business, Goray stated that “at the complaint of ONE restaurant…” and adding “This put a sour note on the entire celebration and resulted in a great number of unhappy participants.” Like a slow motion version of mudslinging on a social media post, Yee wrote a second letter to the Kenosha News three weeks later, directed at Goray. Yee said he took action against the festival simply because he wasn’t asked about it beforehand. “(The people that) wanted the street closed should have contacted all the businesses in the affected area. There wouldn’t have been any problem.” There will not be a third street festival for Harbor West. At least six new places sprouted up in the early part of 1971. One by one, however, they began to close. Some lasted a few months, some over a year. Meeting expenses became more and more difficult for these shopkeepers as landlords quickly raised the rents as they saw the area grow and improve. By September 1972, less than two years before Goray’s vision began to see reality, the Kenosha News declared “The End of Harbor West.” “The rents went up immediately when we moved in,” Judy Arnold, manager of New Morning Gallery, told the Kenosha News at the time. “Even though most of those shops had stood empty for years. Then we fixed up the places, and they upped them again… if they were more reasonable, maybe we could have held on longer. I guess they wanted to make some fast money.” The Artist Gallery, which functioned as Goray’s personal working studio, was the last one standing, and Goray said he had began looking for a new spot. “It’s too lonely here now,” he told the Kenosha News in September 1972. What began as an important gathering of writers, musicians, theater people, and artists which helped grow the artistry of Kenosha, quickly fizzled out due to the blue collar, industrial scope of the city. “Kenosha is not an art city,” Arnold added. “People came and looked. We were a good place to show off to out-of-town visitors, but they didn’t support us in any other way.” As the end of 1972 rolled around, there wasn’t much left of the Harbor West experiment. Today, Kenosha seems to be embracing the arts, even today, the White Lilac has opened on this very block, focusing on live music and other artistic endeavors. By Jason Hedman Artist John Goray (left) looks over the Harbor West Fall Art Fair September 18. 1971 (today this is Total Cyclery) (photo: Kenosha News) “The nicest thing about the idea was the gathering of people — writers, musicians, theater people, and artists who had a place to go. It was more than just the shops, it was a whole way of life.” - Judy Arnold, 1972 continued from previous page Page 46 Downtown Kenosha 2025, Vol. 18 Issue #1 #godowntownkenosha Online at Hap2it.com

Second Friday Lecture Series: Wildfire, Miss Clampitt, and the Wonder Girl from the West: Early Women Sculptors of Abraham Lincoln Civil War Museum, 5400 First Ave Friday, March 14, Noon In the middle of the 19th century, women were not generally a force in American sculpture. Art, and especially sculpture, were a male-centric occupation. Three women sculpted images of Abraham Lincoln, and each has an interesting story. Two of these women sculptors, Vinnie Ream (Hoxie) and Sarah Fisher Ames, would produce images of Lincoln that would be displayed in the United States Capitol building. A third, Edmonia Lewis, broke many barriers of race and gender to become a well-known sculptor. Each of these women has a unique story and, other than Ream, they have not had their stories widely told.
