www.hap2it.com June 27, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 3 If you’re reading this, we want to thank you for making us a part of your weekly shopping regimen. Many of our readers as well as a handful of our advertisers including the Brat Stop have been with us since the very beginning. When we launched in 1977 we never imagined that 47 years later we would still be in existence. It’s been an interesting ride and at times most challenging. The print industry has gone through a gut wrenching transformation, littered with many casualties but we’re still standing, thanks to you. With a 50 year anniversary on the horizon we began giving some thought as to where we would like to be three years from now. Looking to the future can be unsettling. These are difficult times we live in, faced with growing frustration and problems, many beyond our control. The political environment has deteriorated to a point where sadly, opposing views have damaged friendships and longtime relationships. Civility in our politics and a basic kindness towards each other seems to be slipping away from us. Unfortunately, at the national, and to a lesser degree state level, much of it is beyond our control. There’s a myriad of problems, issues and events that no one has either the appetite or ability to tackle. But we are not helpless, if we don’t like the direction we are heading, it’s not too late, we do still have the ability to do something about it. At a local level, here in our community, we truly can make a difference in our everyday lives. Positive change can be accomplished beginning with small actions that manifest into something much bigger but only if enough of us are willing to give it a try. In the weeks and months to come we will be using our resources including Happenings Magazine, Smart Reader and Happenings Q&A on AM1050/WLIP to share your thoughts, ideas, vision and your hopes for a better sense of community. We are surrounded by some amazing people, some more famous than others, but all with stories that we will want to share with you. This week Tristin Jass is one of them who we recently met for the first time. There’s an entire, young generation that can make a positive difference here in our community but they can’t do it alone, all of us will need to lend a helping hand. www.hap2it.com June 27, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 5 ‘The 262 Will Always Be Home’ Social media influencer and entrepreneur Tristan Jass has 5 million YouTube subscribers, big plans for his entrepreneurial future … and no plans to ever abandon his hometown Tristan Jass loved basketball. The lifelong Kenoshan, 24, a 2018 graduate of Tremper High School, played hoops for the school and put in the time and practice to continue at the collegiate level. And then something unexpected happened that turned into something incredible. He posted a video on his Instagram page of him playing 1-on-1 with one of his teachers, a clip that ended with the teacher toppling to the court after Jass executed a nifty crossover dribble to drive to the basket. That video went viral – ESPN even showed it – and Jass realized there were other avenues he could travel and still put his love of and skills at basketball to good use. “You know, I'm five-nine; it's not really realistic that I'm going to the NBA,” he told Happenings in an exclusive interview. “I had to be realistic with myself, so the decision I made was to not go to college and to really lock in and put my all into filming videos and content creation.” “I tell people this all the time: It was the hardest decision I've ever had to make in my life. But it was the best decision I could have made in my entire life.” It’s hard – impossible, even – to argue with Jass’s decision and the logic behind it. As of this writing, he’s amassed 2.3 million followers on Instagram, 3 million on Tik Tok and 5.3 million subscribers to his YouTube channel. Those robust numbers have made the Tristan Jass brand influential worldwide and developed into a source of revenue for Jass himself. He is best known in social-media circles for his basketball videos – including those of him making trick shots and teaching NBA stars like Anthony Davis and James Harden his variations of “the crazy layup.” He’s also had long-distance shooting faceoffs with Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo’s brother (and teammate) Thanasis and Steph Curry, arguably the game’s most lethal sharpshooter. He’s also branched out to establish his own clothing brand, T Jass, and is building a real-estate portfolio. His success has further opened doors to the worlds of celebrities in music and sports (boxing champ Floyd Mayweather and MMA icon Conor McGregor). It’s all given him experiences that amaze even him. Home Will Always Be “To make it a reality you have to put in a lot of hours when other people aren’t. It's a mixture of the work ethic, the amount of work that you put in. And not really caring about other people's opinions.” The 262 TJASS’ By Gary Schneeberger Photographed by Logan Rowan

Page 6 HAPPENINGS June 27, 2024 www.hap2it.com But, despite the way the media often portrays stories like his, Jass was not an overnight success. And he has no intention of resting on his laurels. “I knew from the beginning this was not going to be easy,” he says. “Nothing in life is easy. You have to really, really believe in the work that you're putting in, and realize it's not going to happen overnight. I know people that have built up companies, and it’s taken them 10 years to do it.” “To make it a reality you have to put in a lot of hours when other people aren’t. It's a mixture of the work ethic, the amount of work that you put in. And not really caring about other people's opinions.” Jass says as he kept broadening the reach of his social media platforms he was dismissed by more than a few people as crazy. “A lot of people made fun of me because of some of the videos I posted online,” he recalls. “You have to learn how to deal with not caring about other people's opinions about you. Which can be very difficult. I mean, we're all human at the end of the day. I've gotten messages from people telling me to kill myself.” “It's unfortunate, but you can't really let other people's opinions stop your process. We always have to be positive in a world full of negativity,” Jass explains. “You always have to help out the next person, because you never know what somebody's going through. I'm a big believer that what you put out in positivity, the universe is going to bring that right back to you. And that's the same thing with negativity.” Jass makes it a point to pay forward his good fortune – this Thanksgiving, for instance, he handed out 40 meals to Kenosha families. “I have a big following. I have a lot of kids who look up to me. So one of the reasons is I try to use my platform to show that we should do good,” he says. “I'm in a very good position to help people out, and I think if anybody gets an opportunity to see a little bit of success they should help people out. Even if you might not have the financial resources, tell someone that their outfit looks cool or something. You never know what you can do to put a smile on someone's face.” “You know, a lot of people in the Kenosha area, they are in need,” he adds. “It's just who I am. It's what I love to do. The smile on some of the people's faces when you're helping some of these families… man, it just it doesn't get better than that.” It also doesn’t get much better for Jass, no matter which famous names he’s gotten to hang out with, to be on the cover of Happenings. He’s had a connection to the magazine for years. “I can recall as a kid growing up in church, being with my grandma on a Sunday, and we would always go out to breakfast at Hillcrest,” he recalls. “And as I'm walking in or walking out I would always see the Happenings magazines sitting on the rack right there. I just think it's a full- circle moment for me to be on the cover now. I’m going to put a couple of these in glass frames to showcase them.” And they will likely never be moved out of Happenings’ home base of Kenosha. Jass says he’s been told he could grow his brand exponentially if he moved away to an entertainment hub like Los Angeles. But even if he does that someday, he says he’ll always keep a home in his hometown.

www.hap2it.com June 27, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 7 Tristan Jass’s team in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, coached by commentator Stephen A. Smith, came up short in its battle with the stars coached by former commentator and NFL star Shannon Sharpe, falling 100-91. But Jass had an impressive game – alongside teammates like Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud and singer/actress/talk show host Jennifer Hudson and against Dallas Cowboys star linebacker Micah Parsons. Jass, who finished the game with 27 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Happenings asked him what the experience was like. Q. You are not unfamiliar with sharing a court with NBA superstars and celebrities. But was there one of your celebrity teammates or opponents that left you a little starstruck? If so, why? A. I didn't really get too starstruck, but to be honest, I think I was just very happy to be there with my family. Though, I would say I was very excited when I found out that Lil Wayne was going to be one of my coaches, and I was also very excited that 50 Cent was going to be the opposing team's coach. These are two legends in hip-hop, and I grew up listening to their music, which was a fullcircle moment for me. Q. You had several memorable moments in the game. What was your favorite? A. I think the most memorable part about the celebrity game was looking up into the stands and seeing my whole family watching me play. One of my sponsors, Electrolit, helped me get a sprinter van for the weekend, which allowed my family and friends, a combined total of 40 people, to get down to Indianapolis to see me play! Q. The celebrity game was a huge hit with fans. Why do you think that is? Why is it so fun to watch music stars and athletes who play other sports play basketball? A. Well, first of all, I just think the whole NBA All-Star week/weekend is so much fun. It’s a great place for families to bring their kids to get involved with a lot of different NBA basketball activities throughout the week/weekend. Over the past five years, I’ve been blessed and grateful to be able to be a part of NBA All-Star weekend, and personally, it’s one of my favorite weeks out of the entire year. Just one week of hoops and hoops only. Q. If they ask you back next year — and it seems pretty certain they will — will you have any new special moves to show? A. I’m not actually sure if they would ask me to come back to play next year just yet; you never really know those things until a couple months out. But if they were to send me another invitation, I would gladly accept it because that was one of the biggest stages that I’ve ever played basketball on, and I had a great time. Me playing in the celebrity game would’ve never happened if I didn’t build relationships with people in the NBA corporate office over the past five years, and I’m truly grateful for all the relationships that I’ve built within the NBA as well as all the friendships. By Gary Schneeberger

New York City comedian Bret Raybould is a jack of all trades, slowly building his own cinematic universe one step at a time. He released his first hour long comedy special in 2020 titled, “Bret Raybould Retires from Comedy” that reached #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. He’s released a jazz record, hosts two comedy podcasts, and makes up ½ of the Brothers Raybould sketch group. Don’t miss his performances at the Kenosha Comedy Club on July 5th and 6th! Q: How did you get started in comedy? A: I've been doing stand-up for ten years and honestly there's never really a romantic or fascinating story for most. You just grow up loving comedy, so you start going to open mics and trying your hardest to write a funny joke. Open mics are a brutal affair, especially in NYC where it's all comedians; people are looking at their phone or notebook and it's hard to get a read on the quality of the comedy. But that’s the normal start. Q: Can you recall a show where everything that could have gone wrong did? A: One time I was doing a daytime gig at a college. The handful of folks who were there primarily came for the free tacos, and there was no mention of a show or any signage that said COMEDY. The student union rep who booked me brought me on stage by saying "The following views and opinions expressed by the following performer do not reflect the views and opinions of our university." Then she left the stage! Needless to say, it was not a hot crowd. Q: If you weren’t a comedian what else could you see yourself doing? A: I'd like to run a balloon cart at a zoo, like the old man from Up. Unlike him, I'd keep my promise to my wife and take her to Adventure Falls before she tragically passes away. Q: What advice would you give someone who is interested in pursuing a career in comedy? A: Those are trade secrets I will only reveal at my shows at the Kenosha Comedy Club! By Elaina Myers take five w/Bret Raybould Jeff Richards takes the stage at the Kenosha Comedy Club Friday and Saturday, July 5th & 6th at 8pm. Page 12 HAPPENINGS June 27, 2024 www.hap2it.com Summer COVID-19 cases rising across America As scorching summer temperatures drive Americans indoors and millions travel for vacations and family gatherings, COVID infections are again climbing, U.S. health officials warned. In evidence that suggests a COVID summer wave is underway, case counts are most likely increasing in 39 states and aren't declining anywhere in the country, new data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. While the CDC no longer tracks COVID cases, it still estimates spread of the virus using data on emergency department visits. Both COVID deaths and ED visits have risen in the last week, while hospitalizations climbed 25% from May 26 to June 1, according to the latest CDC data. $3.99 thrift store find turns out to be nearly 2,000- year-old Mayan vase A vase purchased for $3.99 at a Maryland thrift store turned out to be a nearly 2 , 0 0 0 - y e a r - o l d Mayan artifact. Anna Lee Dozier of Washington, said she was shopping at the 2A Thrift Store when her attention was grabbed by an unusual vase. "It looked old-ish, but I thought maybe 20, 30 years old and some kind of tourist reproduction thing so I brought it home," Dozier told WUSA-TV. Dozier said she was visiting Mexico on a work trip earlier this year when she noticed some items on display at the Museum of Anthropology bore a startling resemblance to the vase she purchased for $3.99. She spoke with a museum official, who recommended she contact the Mexican embassy when she returned home. Dozier shared photos and the dimensions of the vase with the embassy, and the item was identified as a Mayan artifact dating from A.D. 200-800. Dozier and her family returned the vase to Mexican Ambassador Estaban Moctezuma Barragan in a ceremony held at the Cultural Institute of Mexico. Officials said the vase will eventually have a new home at a Mexican museum. Woman gets her master's at the age of 105 A woman who left school during World War II finally received her master's degree in education 83 years later at the age of 105. Virginia "Ginger" Hislop earned her bachelor's degree from the Stanford University School of Education in 1940 and immediately started work on her master's at what is now the Stanford Graduate School of Education. Hislop's boyfriend, George Hislop, was called up to serve in World War II, leading the couple to get married and leave campus just before she would have turned in her final thesis to get her degree. "I thought it was one of the things I could pick up along the way if I needed it and I always enjoyed studying, so that wasn't really a great concern to me -- and getting married was," Hislop said in a Stanford news release. Hislop, who now lives in Washington, remained in the education field. Hislop returned to Stanford 83 years after leaving to accept her master's degree at the age of 105. She walked across the stage at the GSE Diploma ceremony and was handed her diploma by Dean Daniel Schwartz. "My goodness," Hislop said. "I've waited a long time for this." Authorities remove mysterious monolith north of Las Vegas Authorities in the Las Vegas area removed a m y s t e r i o u s monolith from the desert north of the city out of concerns of the damage tourists could do to the natural landscape. The 77-inch tall structure, constructed out of sheet metal and secured with rebar and concrete, was spotted earlier this month about 20 miles north of Las Vegas in the Gass Peak region. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department revealed on social media that the monolith was removed late last week "due to public safety and environmental concerns." The unusual object "is being stored at an undisclosed location while public authorities determine the most appropriate way to dispose of or store the item," the department said. Police said "it remains unknown how the item got to its location or who might be responsible." The column evoked memories of similar monoliths discovered in 2020 in locations including Utah, California, Las Vegas, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin, Romania and England's Isle of Wight. An anonymous art collective called The Most Famous Artist later took credit for several of the U.S.-based monoliths. Raccoon choking on cheese rescued by Michigan friends A trio of Michigan friends having a backyard bonfire ended up rescuing a raccoon choking on a piece of cheese. Bill Boski, Tyler Whalen and John Ptaszenski said they were hanging around the fire in Boski's back yard when they made friends with a local raccoon. "Initially, when it came up, it was acting skittish," Boski told WJRTTV. "It arched its back up like it was ready to attack. We were keeping our distance. After a little while, it grew comfortable with us. It was just kind of roaming around all over the yard." The trio said the raccoon was eating what appeared to be a piece of cheese when it started to choke. "It delved into our trash. It looked like he had a piece of cheese with him, and as he was eating it, he started choking. It did this weird thing. It reared up on his hind legs," Whalen said. "Next thing I know, Billy is over there patting him on the back." Ptaszenski captured video as Boski slapped the raccoon's back in an attempt to dislodge the cheese. Whalen gave Boski instructions to slap a lower spot on the animal's back, and the cheese was soon dislodged. "I was really excited for the little guy," Whelan said. "He was in a bad way, and it could have been really horrible, but it all worked out. I was really impressed." coast to coast Ginger Hislop

Page 14 HAPPENINGS June 27, 2024 www.hap2it.com Spain’s capital, like its population, is relatively young. In medieval times, Madrid was just another village, but under several successive kings it transformed to a European capital. Today the country’s hub is the upbeat, vibrant home of more than 3 million people. As the city grew, it made room for its newcomers with a sprawl of modern districts (of little interest to tourists) surrounding its fascinating, easy-to-navigate historic core. Today, Madrid feels orderly and welcoming. Massive urban-improvement projects – new parks, pedestrianized streets, and revamped transit – continue to transform the city. Madrid has worked hard to make itself more livable – especially for pedestrians. You’ll find wonderful car-free areas crossing the city from the Prado Museum to the Royal Palace. Strolling along the pedestrianized Calle de las Huertas or Calle del Arenal, you can see how the investment turned once-ramshackle zones into trendy ones. Posts were installed to keep cars off sidewalks, making the streets safer after dark, and old buildings were restored, helping to preserve the city’s grandeur and intimate charm. Spain has a reputation for partying very late, with night spots not closing until offices open in the morning. If you’re peoplewatching early in the morning, it can be hard to know who is finishing their day and who’s just starting it. Even if you’re not a party animal after midnight, make a point to be out with the happy masses, luxuriating in the cool evening air. One reason people stay out late, especially in summer, is to escape the heat of the day. I often think people who talk about the weather and traffic have nothing else of greater interest on their minds. But here, with the impact of climate change, in the lofty and overheated interior of Spain, even people with plenty to say talk about the weather. The last time I was here in summer, I caught myself assessing restaurants by the quality of their air-conditioning. I saw poor locals, refugees from the heat, lying like lizards in the shade. When it’s sizzling, Madrileños head to Retiro Park to take a shady siesta in a 300-acre green-andbreezy escape. It’s a place where you can hopscotch through a mosaic of lovers, families, skateboarders, expert benchsitters, and pets walking their masters. Once the private domain of royalty, this majestic park has been a favorite of Madrid’s commoners since King Charles III decided to share it with his subjects in the late 18th century. In its center is a big lake (El Estanque), where you can rent a rowboat. At midday on Saturday and Sunday, the area around the lake becomes a street carnival, with jugglers, puppeteers, and lots of local color. Another green oasis is the Royal Botanical Garden (Real Jardín Botánico), just south of the Prado. Here you can take a lush and fragrant break in a sculpted setting, wandering among trees from around the world. It’s actually more than a park – it’s a museum of plants. For great views and an ancient temple, head to the Parque de la Montaña. In 1968, the Egyptian government was grateful for Spain’s help in rescuing monuments threatened by rising waters above the Aswan Dam, so it gave its Temple de Debod to Madrid. Consequently, Madrid is the only place I can think of in Europe where you can actually wander through an intact original Egyptian temple – complete with fine carved reliefs from 200 BC. It’s in a romantic park that locals love for its memorable panoramas – especially at sunset. Throughout Europe, energetic governments are renewing green space and turning formerly carcongested wastelands into public spaces. To experience today’s Madrid, take time away from indoor attractions and relish the exterior of this livable city. By Rick Steves Madridʼs outdoor delights Car-free streets in Madrid, such as the Calle del Arenal, helped turn worn-out areas into trendy zones. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating an incident in which a Southwest Airlines jet descended dangerously low on its approach into Oklahoma City shortly after midnight last Thursday. An air traffic controller at the Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City radioed to the plane's pilots telling them they were at an extremely unsafe altitude when an automated warning from the Minimum Safe Altitude Warning system sounded 9 miles away from the airport. The plane passed over Yukon High School at roughly 625 feet, and at one point had descended to roughly 525 feet, according to FlightRadar24, which tracks arrivals, departures and in-flight operations of planes in the air. "Southwest 4069, low altitude alert. You good out there?" the air traffic controller said, according to audio of the call obtained by The Oklahoman. Southwest Airlines Flight 4069 had departed from Las Vegas. "It woke me up and I thought it was gonna hit my house," one person told The Oklahoman. The commercial jet eventually landed safely after it regained altitude and circled around the airport. Southwest jet flies hundreds of feet above homes on approach to Oklahoma City travel & adventure American tourist Ryan Watson avoided jail time in the Turks and Caicos last Friday by paying a $2,000 fine for bullets found in his luggage at Howard Hamilton International Airport in April. Watson, who lives in Oklahoma, was facing up to 12 years in prison after he was arrested on April 12 while returning with his wife from a trip to Turks and Caicos to celebrate the birthday of several friends. He was released on bond after his arrest but was not allowed the leave the island until Friday, when the judge cited "exceptional circumstances" in allowing him to pay the fine, $500 for each bullet found. Watson entered a guilty plea for owning ammunition on the island. He said he did not realize he had the bullets, used for hunting, in the carry-on bag when he traveled there. Family spokesman Jonathan Franks said on X that Watson will pay the fine and will be flying out to return home. Watson was one of several Americans who ended up in a legal bind under the strict weapons rules in the Turks and Caicos. Tourist pays $2K to avoid jail for bullets found in suitcase

In Atlanta last week to visit relatives, I was fortunate to witness rock-and-roll immortality, courtesy of the Rolling Stones. Just a typical night hanging out with 80-year-old men. OK, two 80-year-old men in particular: Mick Jagger, the Stones’ ageless frontman, and lead guitarist Keith Richards, his bandmate since the Stones formed in 1962. At 77, guitarist Ronnie Wood, who joined the band in 1975, is still considered “the kid.” Ironically, when the show ended and the band took a collective center-stage bow, Wood appeared the most winded, at least from my vantage point. Drummer Steve Jordan also looked like he could use a little oxygen boost, although he was probably too embarrassed to admit it in front of Mick and Keith. After all, Jordan is ONLY 67. Suck it up, young lad! While entering the cavernous Mercedes-Benz stadium, and sitting among veteran Stones fans, I overheard many jokes and humorous comments related to the band members’ ages. “What’s the over-under on whether they all make it through the show?” “Who’s the most important band member on this tour? The doctor!” “Mick has a 7-year-old son. Couldn’t they at least start the show before his bedtime?” “Maybe that’s why the Stones are still touring. That kid is going to need braces. Those aren’t cheap.” The last one was mine. Not sure it’s funny, but I’m a professional comedian. I couldn’t help myself. Then the Stones took the stage and snarkiness gave way to adoration. Not that the Stones weren’t always worshiped by this collection of gray-haired fans, some leaning on canes for support and others who probably made at least three bathroom visits during the band’s two-hour set. Halfway through, Jagger disappeared, ceding the stage to Richards who performed three songs. The last tune perfectly summed up the crowd’s mood and, most likely, the band’s reason for continuing to hit the road when nobody would fault them if they decided to spend their remaining years playing pickleball in retirement communities worldwide. The song, written by Richards in 1972, is simply titled, “Happy.” Richards grinned throughout his solo set. So did Jordan, keeping pace behind him. Heck, so did the roadie who handed Richards the guitars he needed to play each song. Pure bliss all around. Yes, the lyrics aren’t 100% accurate; Richards has plenty of dollars to tide him over for many sunsets. But isn’t doing what you love, for as long as you feel like doing it, a major happiness component? I believe so, despite what you may hear on TikTok. Head to your favorite social media channel of choice, search “How to be happy,” and you could spend the rest of your day contemplating the various solutions. When I’m feeling blue, I’ve done just that. In return, I’ve heard I should alter my breathing, journal, take up kayaking (for real), declutter my condo, start a low protein diet, start a high protein diet, or make an impulse purchase. I could plant herbs, volunteer, increase my daily step count, rekindle a dormant friendship, or, ironically, cancel all my social media accounts. Instead, I will look to the Rolling Stones and hope that, when I hit 80 I am still in front of audiences, making them laugh for 20, 30, 40 minutes or however long they can sit through a set before having to use the restroom or gobble some ibuprofen to ease their aches and pains. That’s my definition of happiness. And “satisfaction.” The Rolling Stones are this summerʼs “happy” tour Greg Schwem is a twenty-year comedic veteran. Levels of improvement among patients reporting the most empathetic care were higher than for such treatments as exercise therapy, yoga, massage, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, cognitive behavioral therapy, opioid therapy and lumbar spine surgery. "If we address only the biological aspect, by putting needles, doing the surgeries ... we might actually miss some opportunities to improve patient care," Dr. Shiqian Shen, a pain management physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, told STAT. Get Me That, Stat! In 2025, Medicare estimates it will spend $3.5 billion on Alzheimer's drug Leqembi, which received formal Food and Drug Administration approval last year. That's a huge jump from the $550 million Medicare expects to cover in 2024. Clinical trials have found Leqembi slows cognitive decline caused by Alzheimer's, but the benefits are deemed modest — and some safety concerns persist. Nonetheless, Leqembi is the first and only approved, diseasemodifying therapy for early-onset Alzheimer's. Nearly 7 million Americans, most aged 65 and older, have the neurologic condition. Best Medicine Patient: "Some mornings, doc, I wake up and think I'm Mickey Mouse. Other mornings, I think I'm Donald Duck or Dopey." Doctor: "Hmmm, how long have you been having these Disney spells?" Observation "I was once thrown out of a mental hospital for depressing the other patients." — American concert pianist, author and personality Oscar Levant (1906-1972) Body of Knowledge Varicose veins are caused by damaged valves that allow blood to flow in the wrong direction, resulting in stretched-out, bulging veins. Conditions like pregnancy, obesity and genetic predisposition can cause them. Once varicose veins appear — usually on the legs — they require a medical procedure to get rid of them. Sum Body Three words with surprising origins related to the human body. 1. Gargoyle: From the Old French word for throat, gargoule, which explains why they are often represented with mouths open 2. Recalcitrant: An adjective derived from the verb recalcitrate or calcitrate, which originally meant to "kick out angrily" and which alludes to the Latin word "calx" or heel 3. Supercilious: An adjective used to describe haughty, condescending behavior and related to the supercilium, the region of the forehead containing the eyebrows, which might rise when observing such behavior Fit to Be Tried There are thousands of exercises, and you've only got one body, but that doesn't mean you can't try them all: The "inchworm" provides whole-body benefits without requiring anything beyond your body. — Stand up tall with your legs straight, making sure your knees aren't locked. — Slowly lower your torso toward the floor, then walk your hands forward. — Once in a pushup position, start taking tiny steps so your feet meet your hands. — Repeat four to six times. Medical Myths Running does not increase your risk of osteoarthritis and may actually be protective. In fact, motion is the lotion, as runners like to say. Not moving, combined with age, weight and genetics, determines your risk of developing osteoarthritis, which occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in joints gradually breaks down, causing the bone to change. The cartilage becomes rough, and eventually bones rub against each other. Running can lead to joint pain or injury, so it's best to follow the rule of twos: Don't run too fast or too far too soon. Build up your pace and stamina slowly. Epitaphs When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one. — An annoymous gay Vietnam veteran (1943-1988) By Scott LaFee, Creators healthy living

Page 38 HAPPENINGS June 27, 2024 www.hap2it.com June 27, 2024 through July 3, 2024 ARIES (March 21-April 19): Be yourself and allow your light to shine. Your “can do” spirit could make you stand out at social gatherings. It may be beneficial to avoid making any sudden stops, starts, or impulsive changes in the second part of the week. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Proudly support someone in your life and enjoy forming a closer level of connection. You may not have time to handle conflicts for a few days but consider thinking about a strategy or plan of action to eventually resolve them. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The best adventures often happen when you are doing what you love, especially with a supportive friend by your side. And if things get tough, remember to look for the joy of the current moment while continuing to move forward. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Lean into your own wishful thinking but stay grounded while doing so. Common sense input from someone may offer a bit of guidance to you. When it comes to love, consider staying calm and developing a mutual respect. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You may be feeling extra pressure from your tasks and routines. Stay resilient and keep working towards your goals. Collaborating closely with someone who you admire and can learn from may be what you need to steer you in the right direction. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): When contemplation beckons, hit the pause button. There could be more to discover about a purchase or investment in the coming week. Someone might appreciate and respect you more if you stand up for yourself and start setting boundaries. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Have fun without drawing unnecessary attention to yourself. In the week ahead, you may feel overlooked, but this may offer you the perfect opportunity to work towards your goals in silence and steer clear of any possible hassles. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You may be pulled in different directions, define your own ambitions if you don’t feel aligned with anyone else’s. Deadlines may frustrate others, but keeping your cool could help you perform better in the week ahead. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Using common sense may be very beneficial. Consider sitting down to decide on the course of action that best aligns with your values. Take action and review the outcomes to possibly avoid repeating mistakes. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Hold off on making irrevocable decisions and giving into wishful thinking during the week to come. Take a moment to get your facts straight and do not get distracted by fantasies or lofty goals that may not be your own. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You may need to free yourself from selfimposed limitations that could cause you to feel boxed in. Your acquaintances might not understand your ambitions. Consider shifting your efforts toward pleasing yourself and accomplishing your goals. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Looking for similarities rather than differences might take you further. Your pursuit of perfection may be a reason that you can get along with a variety of personality types. Consider tuning out the gossip and sticking to the facts.
