Page 4 HAPPENINGS March 28, 2024 www.hap2it.com After presenting at the Oscars, Rita Moreno transitioned to promoting her new movie, The Prank, in theaters. The 92-year-old actor shared some memorable Oscar moments in an interview this week before discussing her latest film. An Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress for 1961's West Side Story, Moreno joined Jamie Lee Curtis, Mary Steenburgen, Lupita Nyong'o and Regina King to introduce this year's nominees. What Oscar viewers didn't see was Moreno meeting singer Lenny Kravitz at the Vanity Fair afterparty. Kravitz wrote the song "Road to Freedom" for the film Rustin, which earned Colman Domingo a nomination for Best Actor. "He got on the floor on his knees," Moreno said. "Who would ever think that Lenny Kravitz would feel that way about someone like me?" Though Moreno has been on stage and screen since the '50s, she said she still introduces herself to people because she does not want to assume they recognize her. Kravitz proved to be a fan. "He just carried on and carried on to the point of I can't believe this guy's on his knees," Moreno said. She said she was pleased with the Oscars' production of nominees by having former winners introduce them. Moreno said it was also significant that she got to introduce Latina nominee America Ferrera. "It had such elegance," Moreno said. "It was the best thing they've done in years and years." The Prank stars Moreno as Mrs. Wheeler, a high school teacher all the students dread. When she fails Ben (Connor Kalopsis) and Mei (Ramona Young), the kids play a prank to get their revenge. Starting the prank Ben and Mei start a rumor that Wheeler actually is a murderer. The prank spirals out of control when people outside their school start believing it, too. Moreno said watching her play the mean teacher made her laugh just with her physicality. "The first time I saw myself on screen I went, 'Ha,'" Moreno said. "I was so shocked at how unpleasant I looked." Wheeler appears to show some vulnerability when the students are not around. When Principal Henderson (Keith David) calls Wheeler into his office, she begs to keep her job, but Moreno suspected that was all an act. "I don't even know that she's vulnerable," Moreno said. "She's so wicked and evil." Henderson's beef with Wheeler goes back long before the prank. He may have been looking for an excuse to put her in her place. "She always parks her car in his space," Moreno said. "She deliberately does that because she comes early before he arrives." Since Wheeler is the target of the prank, the film's poster puts her front and center. Even after seven decades in the business, Moreno said she is still excited to be on a movie poster. "We live in the opportunity to act in a movie," Moreno said. "That's my joy. I love it." Standing up for extras The business was not always a joy for Moreno. In her 2021 documentary, Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, Moreno speaks about her mistreatment she experienced. Now that she is established, Moreno said she steps in when she sees others mistreated on sets. In a recent production she declined to name, she said she defended the film's background extras. It was a scene at a fancy event in which female extras were wearing high heels. Moreno noticed a group of extras in a part of the scene where their feet would not be seen. "The women were not allowed to take their shoes off," Moreno said. "I went over to them and I said, 'Take your shoes off. [Expletive] them. Screw them.'" Moreno also reprimanded the crew member who forbade them from going barefoot. "I'm very aware of how people get mistreated on sets, particularly people who don't have lines to speak," Moreno said. "They're just extras. They're people." When working with young casts like in The Prank, or her recent TV show, One Day at a Time, Moreno said she also warns young actors about mistreatment they might face. "I give them warnings about how people can be so mean to young players," Moreno said. "I tell them what's a good way to behave." By Fred Topel 'Prank' star Rita Moreno stunned by Lenny Kravitz admiration Today, we have 19 people who have acheived the EGOT  status - winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. But when Rita Moreno first accomplished the feat in 1977, she was only the third to do so (after Richard Rogers and Helen Hayes) Born Rose Dolores Alverio Marcano December 11,1931 (age 92) Humacao, Puerto Rico Although born in Puerto Rico, Moreno moved to New York City at the age of four with her mother. At the age of 11, she began to lend her voce to Spanish-language versions of American films. She landed her first Broadway role at the age of 13. To further establish herself as an actress, Moreno and her mother relocated to Hollywood where they found an affordable home within walking distance of MGM studios. Moreno's early work included supporting roles in the classic musical filmsSingin' in the Rain(1952) andThe King and I(1956), before her breakout role as Anita inWest Side Story(1961), which earned her theOscar for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the firstLatin Americanwoman to win anAcademy Award. Her other films include Popi(1969),Carnal Knowledge (1971),The Four Seasons(1981),I Like It Like That(1994) and thecult filmSlums of Beverly Hills(1998). In recent years Moreno portrayed Valentina in the2021 remake ofWest Side Storydirected bySteven Spielberg. She was a cast member on the children's television seriesThe Electric Company(1971-1977), and played Sister Peter Marie Reimondo on theHBOseriesOz(1997-2003). She received two consecutivePrimetime Emmy Awardsfor her roles onThe Muppet Showin 1977 andThe Rockford Filesin 1978. She gained acclaim for her roles inWhere on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?(1994-1999),The CWseriesJane the Virgin(2015–2019), and theNetflixrevival ofOne Day at a Time(2017–2020). www.hap2it.com March 28, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 5 Kick to the Head A new study finds that high school football students already have differences in their brains compared to swimmers, crosscountry runners and tennis players, contrary to thinking that suggested it takes years of head impacts to change brain structure. Football players had cortical thinning and changes in brain folding as well as lower brain signaling and coherence in frontal and medial parts of the brain, but they had increased signaling and coherence in the occipital lobe. "These findings suggest playing football may be associated with a different trajectory of cortical maturations and aging processes," the authors noted. Body of Knowledge The sternum is a three-part structure at the midline of the chest. It helps protect organs such as the lungs and heart, and it connects the ribs. In children, the parts of the sternum are joined by flexible cartilage to accommodate growth, but these slowly turn to bone called the xiphoid process. Get Me That, Stat! One in eight Americans have hearing loss, depending on where they live and work, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hearing loss was more prevalent among men, Hispanic people and rural residents. After mining, working in retail or restaurants were the two occupations tied most closely to hearing loss. West Virginia, Alaska, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Arizona had the highest rates of hearing loss; the District of Columbia, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Connecticut had the lowest. Noise in big cities appeared to be less harmful than a rural life spent working outdoors with heavy machinery, riding ATVs or hunting with firearms, reported STAT. Best Medicine When you get older, "one for the road" means peeing before you leave the house. Medical History This week in 1987, the FDA approved the sale of AZT (azidothymidine), an antiviral drug believed to prolong the lives of some AIDS patients. By 2000, an estimated 50 million people were infected with HIV worldwide. AZT was the first authorized antiretroviral AIDS drug. Combined with recently approved antivirals, AZT's effectiveness has been increased, and AIDS today meets the criteria for a chronic disease. Food for Thought We all know about the weird stuff purposefully put into foods, such as red dye from cochineal beetles or sand (fancy name: silicon dioxide) used as an anticaking agent. Then there are the presumably unintended ingredients. These are all reported cases: a black widow in grapes, a frozen frog in a bag of vegetables, a live frog in a bag of fresh spinach, a dead mouse in a can of Mountain Dew, severed human fingers in frozen custard and chili, a tooth in a candy bar, condoms in French fries and clam chowder, a live bullet in a hot dog and syringes poking up all over the place. Enjoy your lunch! Observation "Doctors is all swabs." — Billy Bones, shipmate to Jim Hawkins in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island" (1883) Medical Myths In the late 1990s, advice generally running around was that exercising too late in the evening would disrupt subsequent sleep. More recent studies, however, have concluded that's this is not generally the case, with the exception of perhaps vigorous activity just before you go to bed. A 2018 metasurvey of 23 studies found that not only did evening exercise not affect sleep, but it also seemed to help people fall asleep faster and spend more time in deep sleep. The exception were folks doing high-intensity exercise, such as such as interval training, less than one hour before bed. They took longer to fall asleep and had poorer sleep quality. Med School Q: What is the difference between sebum and cerumen? A: Sebum is the oily substance produced to protect hair and skin and keep skin moisturized. It's made up of a collection of fat molecules, waxes and squalene, an oil compound. Cerumen is ear wax, intended to protect the skin of the external ear canals from water damage, infection, trauma and foreign bodies. Cerumen is a mixture of secretions from the sebaceous and ceruminous glands in the ears and desquamated skin, which basically means skin that has been shed. Page 6 HAPPENINGS March 28, 2024 www.hap2it.com Actress Karen Gillan -- famous for action-comedy roles -- says she signed on to star in the new psychological thriller Sleeping Dogs because it allowed her to play a mystery woman in a story filled with secrets, lies and unreliable memories. "I was reading the script and I was like, 'Ooh, I'm into this! This is wellwritten. I don't know where it's going,'" Gillan, 36, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. "When I learned more about who I would be playing, that's when it became a no-brainer. I get to exercise a little bit of the transformational aspect that I enjoy." Co-starring Russell Crowe, Martin Csokas and Tommy Flanagan, the film is an adaptation of E.O. Chirovici's mystery novel The Book of Mirrors, which was adapted by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage and directed by Cooper. It is currently playing in select theaters, with the nearest in Shaumburg, Illinois. The story centers around who killed a popular man with a lot of secret enemies. Crowe plays Roy, a retired Pennsylvania homicide detective undergoing a clinical trial to treat his Alzheimer's disease and is asked to reexamine a decade-old murder case. Gillan plays Laura/Elizabeth, a brilliant psychologist who was romantically involved with the victim, Dr. Wieder (Csokas), a college professor working on a new drug that might help traumatized people forget painful memories. Flanagan plays Jimmy, Roy's former partner. "She is a very interesting character. She wears many masks. She adopts a few different personalities, depending on the situation that she's in. She is a psychology student, so she is incredibly clever," Gillan said of her character. "She isn't getting enough credit for the work she is doing. She is dealing with the fact that she has been overlooked and her work has been essentially stolen from her. That is how she connects to the whole story." Gillan, who said she is a huge fan of suspense movies like Silence of the Lambs and Shining, found Laura/Elizabeth to be a fascinating character and did a lot of research into what might make someone like her tick. In addition to speaking five languages, Laura/Elizabeth also has degrees in math, psychology and art history. "The main thing I did was try to figure out who she is as a person and why she is so performative. Then I did a deep dive into what type of person does wear masks in their life and what type of person or disorder is manifested in adopting different personalities," Gillan said. "I also decided she was the type of person who might study people that she deems to be intellectuals and she watched their videos on YouTube even and adopted their mannerisms," she added. "So I watched a lot of Cate Blanchett in Tar and then [author and psychologist] Jordan Peterson." Although Gillan and Crowe appeared in the 2022 Marvel blockbuster, Thor: Love and Thunder, they didn't share any scenes together. Gillan, who was in Guardians of the Galaxy, The Bubble, Jumanji and Doctor Who, said she was happy to finally work with the Oscar winner on this project. "It was so cool to work with Russell," she said. "He is such a brilliantly skilled actor and he knows all about the cameras and the lenses and the technical side of it, but then is so present, emotionally. Just watching him, I'm like, 'That's why you are who you are because you have the thing.'" The Scottish actress noted that although everyone in the cast was playing American characters, most of them were from the United Kingdom or Australia, where the movie was made. "There were hardly any Americans playing Americans in this film. Even our dialect coach was from England, teaching us how to sound American," she said. Since she wasn't in every scene, and there were so many twists and red herrings, Gillan actually was able to watch the movie and enjoy the suspense as a viewer. "It evolved from the first script that I read in a really interesting way, so I got to watch it with fresh eyes, in a way," she said. "When I was making it, I was more in it and focused on my character than seeing how the whole puzzle fit together." When it comes to choosing her roles, Gillan doesn't have a scientific strategy. "I probably should," she said with a laugh. "A good sign is when I read the script and start saying the lines out loud because it's just fun. That's happened to me a few times, and that is a surefire sign that I'm going to want to do this," Gillan added, explaining that she considers the filmmaker, script, her character and people behind the scenes before she accepts a role. "I can try to have some sort of strategy, but I think it's just a gut instinct," she said. By Karen Butler Karen Gillan drawn to mystery woman role in twisty 'Sleeping Dogs' Karen Gillan stars in the new film “Sleeping Dogs”

www.hap2it.com March 28, 2024 HAPPENINGS Page 7 I can’t think of any big city in Europe where you wake up literally at "cock crow." In Tangier, Morocco — right across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain — the roosters, even more than the minaret’s call to prayer, make sure the city wakes up early. I spent a recent birthday in Tangier, and started my special day with the roosters. I arrived in Tangier after a quick ferry ride from Tarifa, on the southern coast of Spain. Though it’s just a 35-minute boat ride away, Tangier feels a world apart from Europe. Like almost every city in Morocco, Tangier is split into a new town and an old town (medina). The old town, encircled by a medieval wall, has colorful markets; twisty, hilly streets; and the Kasbah, with its palace and mosque. The Grand Socco, a big, noisy square, is the link between the old and new parts of town. The city is light on museums and attractions, but it doesn’t need them; Tangier’s sights are living in the streets. To celebrate my birthday, I spent a couple of hours alone, just floating through the back alleys. Wandering through the market, just off the Grand Socco, I came across a collage of vivid images. A butcher was making a colorful curtain of entrails, creating mellow stripes of all textures. Camera-shy Berber tribeswomen were in town selling goat cheese wrapped in palm leaves. A man lumbered through the crowd pushing a ramshackle cart laden with a huge side of beef. He made a honking sound, and at first I thought he was just being funny. But it wasn’t the comical beepbeep I’d make if I were behind a wheelbarrow. Small-time shipping was his livelihood, and his vocal chords were the only horn he had. In Tangier, many people can’t afford private ovens, phones, or running water, so there are communal options: phone desks, baths, and bakeries where locals drop off their ready-to-cook dough. During my wanderings, I followed a colorfully scarved woman into a community bakery. She was carrying her platter of doughy loaves under a towel. The baker, artfully wielding a broomhandled wooden spatula, received her loaves, hardly missing a beat as he pushed and pulled the neighborhood’s baked goods — fish, stews, bread, cookies, and pods of sunflower seeds — into and out of his oven. The Kasbah sits atop old Tangier. On Place de la Kasbah is the Dar el-Makhzen, a former sultan’s palace that now houses a history museum. The Kasbah is also the scene of a vivid gauntlet of amusements waiting to ambush parading tour groups: snake charmers, flamboyant water vendors, and squawky dance troupes. The view of the ocean from here is not to be missed. The artist Henri Matisse traveled here in 1912-13, and the culture, patterns, and colors that he encountered showed up routinely in his art. The vast majority of tourists in Tangier are day-trippers (from resorts in southern Spain). But I like to spend the night, experiencing the communal nature of a riad – a guesthouse typically found in the old town, with rooms surrounding a courtyard atrium. If you’re here in the evening, make sure to be out and about in the medina after dark, when in the cool of the evening, the atmospheric lanes, squares, and people conspire to become even more alluring. By Rick Steves Tangier: A cultural kaleidoscope travel Tangier’s market boasts piles of fruits, veggies, and olives, countless varieties of bread, and nonperishables, like clothing and electronics The Federal Aviation Administration is warning of travel disruptions surrounding the total solar eclipse April 8. That day, the sun and moon will form a total solar eclipse that will cast a path of totality across 13 U.S. states. In a statement, the FAA warned pilots to prepare for operational changes and higher-than-normal traffic volume at airports along the eclipse's path. According to the FAA, the eclipse is expected to impact the United States from about 1:30 to 2:40 p.m. local time. While most of the country will be able to see a portion of the eclipse, cities like Dallas, Texas and Cleveland would be in the line of the totality. The FAA said NASA, which created a map of the "Great North American Eclipse," would assist the agency as it plans for the date. The FAA said it would be limiting and possibly canceling practice, approaches, touchand-goes and pilot training operations at airports in the path of the eclipse. By Dana Forsyte FAA warns of added traffic, delays associated with eclipse United Airlines says the Federal Aviation Administration is increasing its oversight of the carrier following several incidents involving its passenger aircraft during the past month. Sasha Johnson, United Airlines vice president of corporate safety, said in a statement to airline employees that the increased presence of federal regulators will be noticeable. "The number of safety-related events in recent weeks have rightfully caused us to pause and evaluate whether there is anything we can and should do differently," she wrote. The added scrutiny comes after the airline experienced nearly a dozen safety-related incidents in the past month, including a blown tire on one flight out of Colorado, another tire falling from another flight in San Francisco and an aircraft that rolled off the runway and became stuck in the grass at the Houston airport on March 8. The incidents have now caused the FAA to more closely monitor safety procedures at United. Most of the aircraft in its fleet are Boeing models, but the company is considering buying aircraft from Airbus, which is Boeing's competitor in Europe, CNN reported. Johnson said the FAA temporarily will pause several certification activities while monitoring operations at United. The FAA's "safety assurance system routinely monitors aspects of an airline's operation. It focuses on an airline's compliance with applicable regulations, ability to identify hazards, assess and mitigate risk, and effectively manage safety," agency officials said in a statement to media outlets. The agency didn't provide a timeline for the safety review at United Airlines. By Mike Huer United Airlines says FAA is increasing scrutiny after series of incidents

Page 10 HAPPENINGS March 28, 2024 www.hap2it.com Hot honey, exotic spices pushing pizza into new flavors At the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas, pizza lovers looked at new technology, sampled international toppings and found out what's trending for 2024. Customers aresearching outa mix of sweet and spicy ingredients and toppings. Sauces like hot honey, ranch and garlic sauce are making their way onto pizzas, topped with items like ribbon pepperoni, linguica, hot peppers, shaved parmesan and greens like basil, arugula and spinach. Global flavors are growing in the pizza market. Familiar profiles like Mexican, Cuban, Greek and Indian have joined new favorites -- ingredients like chimichurri, gochujang and miso. On average, according to a study by Pizza Hut, Americans eat pizza about three times a month, leading to annual consumption of 288 slices per person. According to a recent survey by Pizza Hut, sweet and spicy pairings on menus have jumped up 38% in the last year and hot honey is projected to outpace nearly all other culinary and beverage flavors by 2027. Respondents have been leaning toward savory (52%), hearty (34%) and spicy (27%) flavor profiles when they dine out, according to the study. Pizza lovers also said they were willing to try several unusual fruit and veggie toppings on their pizza, including pineapple (44%), chili peppers (21%), artichokes (16%), potatoes (15%) and pickles (14%). There could be bears under their homes Wildlife officials in North Carolina are warning residents to be aware of an unusual potential household hazard: bears waking up under the house. Justin McVey, with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, said officials have noticed an uptick in recent years of bears making their winter homes under houses and decks. "When people think of dens, they always think of caves," McVeytold WGHP-TV."That's not really the case." He said bear dens are also sometimes found in crawlspaces and backyard brush piles. He said wildlife officials might evict the unwanted squatters, depending on the time of year. He said officials are hesitant to relocate mother bears with very young cubs. "The fun part of the job is to convince a homeowner that it's OK to have a bear under their house," McVey said. He said bears usually vacate their winter dens voluntarily around late March and early April. Chick-fil-A to stop serving antibiotic-free chicken Long known for serving naturally raised chicken, Chick-filA has announced it will stop serving only antibiotic-free chicken beginning this spring, the company said. It joins several other well known restaurants and producers to make the move, citing supply chain problems. "To maintain supply of thehigh-quality chickenyou expect from us, Chick-fil-A will shift from No Antibiotics Ever (NAE) to No Antibiotics Important To Human Medicine (NAIHM) starting in the Spring of 2024," the company's announcement read. NAE means no antibiotics of any kind were used in the raising of the animal, while NAIHM "restricts the use of those antibiotics that are important to human medicine and commonly used to treat people, and allows use of animal antibiotics only if the animal and those around it were to become sick," according to the Chick-fil-A website, Chick-fil-A switched to antibiotic-free chicken in 2014, eventually meeting its goal of serving antibiotic-free chicken at all of its chain restaurants in 2019. Household chemicals post threat to health Many household chemicals could pose a threat to brain health and may be linked to neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and autism. A study by the Ohiobased Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine found that 292 of the 1,823 common chemicals examined were poisonous to a special type of brain cell called an oligodendrocyte, which creates a protective insulation around nerve cells. The study, which utilized mice, notes that neurological issues impact millions of individuals, but only a fraction of those cases have been or are attributed to genetics, adding that "unknown environmental factors are important contributors to neurological disease." Lottery winner thought her account had been hacked A woman said she thought her Michigan Lottery account had been hacked when she logged on to find she had won a prize of $25,000 a year for life. Patricia Royer, 65,told officialsshe bought a ticket for the March 12 Lucky for Life drawing at MichiganLottery.com. "My husband and I started playing Lucky for Life about a year ago, and we have loved playing it ever since," Royer said. "I won $200 a few months ago, so I have been using that to buy more tickets. The morning after the drawing, I was having a cup of coffee and logged in to see if I won anything. When I saw I won $25,000 a year for life I said: 'This can't be real!' I thought someone hacked my account, so I logged out and logged back in. I still can't fathom winning! It is unbelievable," she said. A Homeland Security Investigations spokesperson said the raids were conducted as part of an "ongoing investigation." During the raid in Los Angeles, Homeland Security expert Hal Kempfer told Fox 11 that they were looking for any laptops or flash drives that could connect Combs to the allegations. Combs, who has not responded to news of the raids, has been hit with four lawsuits, accusing him of sexual abuse. The 54-year-old rapper has denied the allegations. Last year, Combs' former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, an R&B singer who dated him from 2005 to 2018, alleged years of sexual abuseand "savage" beatings that she said were witnessed by the rapper's staff. Ventura and Combs reached a settlement within days. Three more lawsuits were filed in November 2023 right before New York's Adult Survivors Act expired. The lawsuits include a complaint filed by a Canadian woman, who claims she was sextrafficked and gang raped in 2003 when she was 17. The woman said Combs invited her to his recording studio in New York City, where she says he gave her drugs and alcohol before he and his friends allegedly gang-raped her. Combs denied the allegations, arguing he was being falsely targeted for his wealth. That lawsuit was dropped in December. Sean Combs

Your time is likely coming, and the right person could be available and nearby. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Anticipation is a great life skill. Ask yourself what you’ll likely want and need in 5 years, and in 10 years. Start thinking about working toward long term goals, not just getting current tasks handled or bills paid. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): If life is dealing you some surprises, wait to see if they lead toward something better before you panic. Nothing is ever taken that we need for our highest good. Sometimes the universe answers prayers with something better. CANCER (June 21-July 22): A group agreement can take the pressure off for both of you. Allow the situation to grow organically; don't try to force things. Enjoy time with special people or furry friends while you wait for the moment for more. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Earth School is a place for growth and learning. Your task is to discover who you are, to discover and refine your talents, and to evolve into the highest-level version of yourself. You only stop when you stop growing. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): If the pressures of life get in the way of a relationship, find the time to remind the person what they mean to you. Share your own situation and maybe you can help each other trouble-shoot what each of you are facing. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): What makes a person confident and productive isn't about perfection, but more how well they’re able to handle it when things go wrong. Accept that detailed plans can go sideways and if they do, there's always tomorrow. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Staying connected with friends is important. It's easy to let things drift and put off checking in until an indefinite tomorrow. Remember what you've shared over the years and find something to do together. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You may have been neglecting some parts of your life. Reach out to friends so they know you haven't abandoned them. Even if things are going well, you need to stay in a loving exchange with your support network. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):Step up to the challenge if need to take over the leadership of something to be sure of the right outcome. Be sure to stay in your lane unless specifically asked for your input; sometimes they just need to find out on their own. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): ou and a partner or colleague may have different ideas about the relationship. Are there different expectations or are you working on separate timelines? Have the conversation to understand what your future could hold.. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A good way to stay stuck would be to think some mysterious rescuer could suddenly appear to fix your life. It's always up to us to rescue ourselves, and that starts with understanding the problem and creating a step-by-step plans.
