Page 4 HAPPENINGS June 8, 2023 www.hap2it.com Cruel Summer returns with a new cast in an entirely new story for Season 2, which premiered last Monday on Freeform and streams on Hulu. A new mystery unfolds between 1999 and 2000. In the first summer, Megan (Sadie Stanley) welcomes foreign exchange student Isabella (Lexi Underwood). A love triangle with Luke (Griffin Gluck) and a crime ensues by summer 2000. "Even though they are only like six months apart, it feels like Megan becomes a completely different person," Stanley, 21, said in a recent Zoom interview. Before her senior year, Megan was on an academic path. The other time periods reveal what led to drastic changes. "Second timeline, we see her open up a little bit and let loose and be a kid," Stanley said. "She kisses a boy and gets a boyfriend and drinks." As the season reveals what happened in the months between, Megan abandons her academic pursuits and closes off communication with her mother (KaDee Strickland). "She's got a really hardened exterior that is just reflecting what's going on on the inside," Stanley said of the third Megan. "She's been through a lot and everything she had hoped for has crumbled. She's trying to figure out how to get through." When Isabella arrives, she seems like someone who can open Megan up to new experiences. Underwood, 19, said Isabella's style projects the image she wants people to see. "Literally when you first see her walk out of the car, she has on these ridiculously tall heels," Underwood said. "As we go through the journey, we get to see that Isabelle uses that as a mask to cover up deep down what she's really going through on the inside." Underwood said the changes Isabella exhibits in the other times show a chameleon-like ability to transform herself. "She adapts and she knows how to essentially change herself to fit in," Underwood said. "In the third timeline, Isabella has completely lost herself." Luke only appears in the 1999 timelines. Gluck, 22, said Luke changes little despite what the girls are going through. "He's not that different because they're only six months apart," Gluck said. "Luke doesn't get to do as much fun transformations as the girls do." All three of the actors were born after the show takes place. The actors all agreed the eras were not so distant as to require indepth research. "I think I looked up what president was the president at the time," Gluck said. Season 1 of Cruel Summer took place in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Stanley said 1999-2000 felt less drastically different from the present "I feel like a lot of certain trends culturally have come back right now as far as fashion, music and just iconic moments have been resurfacing," Stanley said. "So didn't have to dig too deep." Underwood did listen to music from the period to help her get into character. "I had 'Linger' by The Cranberries, 'Fade Into You' by Maisie Star, 'Baby One More Time' by Britney [Spears] because I just assumed that Isabelle is like a huge Britney fan," Underwood said. "A lot of No Doubt in there because she definitely talks about it in the show." New episodes of Cruel Summer air Mondays at 9 p.m. on Freeform and stream the next day on Hulu.. Page 6 HAPPENINGS June 8, 2023 www.hap2it.com Kraków is the Boston of Poland – a charming and vital city buzzing with history, college students, and tourists. Though not the capital, Kraków is the cultural and intellectual center of the country – and easily Poland’s best destination. At the center of the Old Town is the Main Market Square, one of Europe’s most gasp-worthy public spaces, and a great place to enjoy a drink. Knowing this is one of Europe’s least expensive countries, I choose the fanciest café on the square and order without considering price. Sinking deep into my chair, I ponder the scene. The square is vast and grand, but still retains a folksy intimacy. It bustles with fragrant flower stalls, horse carriages carting tourists, and loitering teenagers. A folk band – swaggering in their colorful peasant costumes – gives me a private little concert. Feeling flush, I tip them royally. Perhaps too royally (a big tip gets you “The Star-Spangled Banner”). Back in the 13th century, vendors came to this square to sell their wares. The Cloth Hall is where cloth-sellers had their market stalls. Today it’s a one-stop shopping arcade for souvenirs, including traditional embroidery, wood carvings, and jewelry (especially amber). On the upper level of the Cloth Hall, the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art displays great paintings by native artists. Facing the square, the imposing St. Mary’s Church – with its distinctive twin towers – has long been an icon of the city. Each midday, crowds gather inside for a medieval moment as a nun swings open the church’s much-adored altarpiece. This exquisite Gothic polyptych – an altarpiece with pivoting panels – was carved in the late 1400s by Veit Stoss. One of the most impressive medieval woodcarvings in existence, it depicts the death of the Virgin with emotion rare in Gothic art. The Main Market Square may be the heart of Kraków, but Wawel Hill is the soul. The most visited sight in Poland, this is considered sacred ground, a symbol of Polish royalty and independence. Though a castle has stood here since the 11th century, the highlight is Wawel Cathedral, which houses the tombs of the country’s greatest rulers and historic figures. It’s the Westminster Abbey of Poland. These days, a large majority of Poland’s people are practicing Catholics. But back in the 1930s, there was a sizable Jewish community – a quarter of Kraków’s population was Jewish. The Kazimierz neighborhood, named for the 14th-century king who welcomed the Jews when other nations were deporting them, was once a thriving Jewish district. While few Jews still live here, the spirit of their tradition survives. Perhaps the best way to enjoy that is at a klezmer dinner concert, with traditional cuisine accompanied by Jewish music from 19th-century Poland. Like so many other Jewish communities in Europe, Kazimierz was decimated during the Holocaust. The fragile remains of the community, historic exhibits, and synagogues provide a meditative look at how the town was walled in and its residents eventually shipped off by the Nazis to be exterminated. In the old Jewish cemeteries, fragments of headstones – broken under Nazi tank treads – now make up moving mosaic walls and Holocaust monuments. Across the river from Kazimierz, the former Jewish ghetto is where Oskar Schindler saved the lives of many of his Jewish workers. His factory is now a museum that tells the heroic owner’s story. Whether burrowing through Kraków’s countryside or skimming the city’s sights, this is a place that fascinates and inspires me. Of all of the Eastern European cities boasting to be “the next Prague,” Kraków is for real. By Rick Steves Kraków weaves a vibrant cultural tapestry travel Just outside Kraków, the Wieliczka Salt Mine is filled with salt sculptures – and tourists. More people traveled through U.S. airport security checkpoints during the long Memorial Day holiday weekend than during the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, data show. The Transportation Security Administration reported that around 9.78 million people moved through security checkpoints between Friday and Monday, compared with 9.74 million during the same period in 2019. Airline tickets are considerably more expensive than in 2019, before the pandemic, though this year marks the first full year without social restrictions designed to control the spread of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. The World Health Organization declared an end to the global COVID-19 public health emergency on May 5. Travel club AAA expected a bump in travel over Memorial Day weekend, although road trips had not bounced back to pre-pandemic levels. AAA expected 42.3 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more, up 2.7 million, or 7%, from 2022. Air travel, however, was expected to be 11% higher than this time last year and 5.4% higher than before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. "Despite high ticket prices, demand for flights is skyrocketing," AAA said. "This Memorial Day weekend could be the busiest at airports since 2005." From his account on Twitter, meanwhile, Patrick DeHaan, the senior petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, said demand for U.S. gasoline between Thursday and Monday was 1.1% lower than year-ago levels. While airline tickets are up on demand-related issues, retail gasoline prices are on the decline due to lingering concerns about the state of affairs. AAA on Tuesday put the national average retail price at $3.58 for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline, $1.04 per gallon lower than this time last year. Page 12 HAPPENINGS June 8, 2023 www.hap2it.com Girl graduates high school at age 14 A Texas teen who entered high school at age 10 has now graduated at age 14 and is headed to the University of Texas at Arlington. Oforitsenere Bodunrin, 14, graduated from James Martin High School in Arlington, where she served as editor of the school newspaper. Oforitsenere, a seconddegree black belt, plans to study computer science and aviation this fall at the University of Texas at Arlington. The teenager is following in the footsteps of her sister, who also graduated high school at age 14. "She mirrored her sister," mother Bawo Bodunrin told KHOU-TV. She said the girl learned how to read at age 2 and was doing multiplication by age 4. "Normally you would say the sky is the limit," Bawo Bodunrin said. "For her, the sky is the beginning." Cat celebrates 32nd birthday A pet celebrating her 32nd birthday in Britain might be the oldest living cat in the world. Lila Brissett, 71, of Norwich, England, said her cat, Rosie, was born June 1, 1991, and is celebrated her 32nd birthday with a salmon cake prepared by a local cat cafe owner. "She has honked half of the salmon cake already -- I expect she will wake up at lunchtime and eat the rest," Brissett told the Norwich Evening News. Brissett adopted Rosie when she was only a kitten and said the feline has only been to the vet twice -- once to be spayed in 1991, and a second time about five years ago to be treated for a cyst. Brissett said she has been in touch with Guinness World Records about having Rosie certified as the oldest cat living. The current record holder, a fellow England resident named Flossie, was 26 years and 316 days old when she was certified in November 2022. Breastfeeding beyond one year linked to higher test scores, study says New research shows babies who breastfeed longer could see better test scores years later as adolescents. The study followed 5,000 British children from infancy in the early 2000s through high school. It found the longer children were breastfed, the better they performed on standardized assessment tests, according to Dr. Reneé Pereyra-Elías, a researcher at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at the University of Oxford. "What the study team found was that there was a modest improvement in test scores associated with being breastfed longer," Pereyra-Elías said. "Longer breastfeeding was associated with better educational outcomes at age 16," the study confirmed. According to the study, children who were breastfed for more than a year were 39% more likely to score high on both math and English GCSE exams. They were also less likely to fail the English GCSE. Those who breastfed for at least four months had a two- to three-point higher attainment score than those who were never breastfed. According to the study, the attainment scores increased with each additional month of breastfeeding. "Breastfeeding duration was associated with improved educational outcomes at age 16 among children living in England, after controlling for important confounders," the study said in conclusion. "Breastfeeding should continue to be encouraged when possible, as potential improvements in academic achievement constitute only one of its potential benefits." Skeletal remains found on construction site belong to child from 1800s The skeletal remains of a child, found buried last month in northern Virginia during the construction of a new home, date back more than 100 years, according to the medical examiner. "Examination revealed that the remains were indeed human and that they date back to the late 1800s to early 1900s," the Augusta County Sheriff's Office announced in a Facebook post. The medical examiner did not reveal the age of the child or the cause of death. The human remains were found as a contractor dug footers for a new home about 100 miles north of Richmond. While the remains were buried in an unmarked grave, the sheriff's office has determined there was no crime. "We are of course saddened by this discovery, but thankful that these remains were not connected with any criminal activity." World's largest crocodile estimated to be 120 years old An 18-foot-long crocodile known as the largest in the world is celebrating what his Australian caretakers believe to be his 120th birthday. The Guinness World Record-holding crocodile, named Cassius, was captured Australia's Northern Territory in 1984 after being blamed for a string of cattle deaths in the area. "He was 16 feet, 10 inches with at least another 6 inches of tail missing and a bit of a snout missing," Graeme Webb, one of the scientists who captured Cassius, recalled in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corp. The crocodile now lives at Marineland Crocodile Park on Green Island in the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. coast to coast Cuba Gooding Jr. settles civil rape case Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. settled a federal civil lawsuit that accused him of rape. The case was set to go to trial with jury selection scheduled but an entry on an electronic docket noted that the "parties have resolved the matter." The plaintiff was asking for $6 million in the trial but settlement details were not disclosed. The woman claimed she meet Gooding in a Greenwich Village restaurant in August 2013 while out with a friend and he proceeded to invite her for drinks at the Mercer Hotel where he was staying. In his room, the woman said she tried to leave when Gooding started undressing in front of her before throwing her on his bed where he allegedly "aggressively removed" her underwear and raped her. Gooding admitted having sex with the woman but said it was consensual. Paul A. Crotty, the judge overseeing the case denied a motion from the woman's lawyer allowing her to be represented as "Jane Doe" and ordering her lawyers to "file an amended complaint bearing her legal name." The trial judge said earlier that three other women who had accused Gooding of abuse from 2009 to 2019 would be allowed to testify against him. Gooding barely avoided prison time by entering a guilty plea to a misdemeanor in state court that accused him of groping several women. He was allowed to withdraw that plea for a lesser charge after receiving alcohol and behavioral counseling. Gooding's legal problems first started on June 13, 2019, on the original misdemeanor charges for having touched a 29-year-old woman at a Manhattan lounge. www.hap2it.com June 8, 2023 HAPPENINGS Page 13 Define 'Healthy' Last fall, the Food and Drug Administration published new guidelines about which foods could be labeled "healthy." Some of the criteria: They needed to contain a certain amount of nutritious ingredients, such as fruits and vegetables, and have little added sugar, salt or saturated fat. Not surprisingly, the makers of packaged foods, such as cereal and pasta, are complaining loudly, at least indirectly arguing that the criteria are impossible to achieve. Even advocates of better food nutrition acknowledge a certain reality: "Hardly anything would qualify, so of course food manufacturers don't like the idea," Marion Nestle, an emeritus professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University, said. Body of Knowledge Scars continue to look the same year after year because, while skin cells are replaced periodically, the underlying collagen is not. Get Me That, Stat! According to a report by Health Care Cost Institute, the median amount of money spent on health care in 2020 by the average American was $4,879. The range per person in a survey of metropolitan areas ranged from $3,025 in Riverside, California, to $7,221 in Anchorage, Alaska. Most metro areas fell between $4,147 and $5,611. Counts 2: The amount, in dollars, that Medicare is seeking for patient copays for generic drugs for common chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure. (No one thinks it will happen soon.) Source: STAT Best Medicine A man walks into a clinic. He has a strawberry growing out of his head. The clinic doctor looks at him and says, "Let me give you some cream to put on that." Stories for the Waiting Room Amblyopia is the medical term for "lazy eye," a condition in which the muscles and brain signals of one eye are weaker. Traditionally, treatment has involved having children or babies (it's usually treated early in life) wear a patch over the stronger eye with the goal of improving function in the weaker eye. New research suggests getting both eyes to work together might produce better, faster results. Mice with a similar condition were exposed to visually enriched stimuli (think watching a movie), with either one eye closed (mimicking the patch therapy) or both eyes open. Brain scans showed the two-eye approach produced greater mental plasticity and the weaker and overall improved vision. Interestingly, the effect was reinforced by encouraging the mice to sleep afterward. No doubt to dream about what they just saw. Observation "When I'm not in my right mind, my left mind gets pretty crowded." — Comedian Steven Wright Medical History This week in 1934, the Dionne quintuplets (Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emilie and Marie) were born near the Canadian village of Corbell — the first quintuplets known to have survived their infancy. Health authorities quickly removed the girls from the parents, accusing the latter of seeking to exploit their novelty. They were placed in a nearby hospital, which built a special nursery for them — and allowed regular public displays of the quintuplets to paying crowds. The girls participated in many marketing campaigns as they grew older, became a popular cultural reference and appeared in three movies together. Two of the five are still alive. Med School Q: What is stiff-person syndrome? A: It's a neurological autoimmune disorder in which sufferers experience muscle spasms and stiffness in the torso, arms and legs. It can also affect some internal organs, and result in increased sensitivity to sound, stress and physical contact. There is no cure, but medication, immunotherapies and some types of physical therapy can ease symptoms. The condition garnered headlines late last year when singer Celine Dion announced she had been diagnosed with the disease. In her case, it affects her vocal cords, preventing her from singing. Page 14 HAPPENINGS June 8, 2023 www.hap2it.com I May Destroy You and Gangs of London actor Paapa Essiedu says George, the hero he plays in the new British sci-fi drama The Lazarus Project, is a "normal dude" placed in an extraordinary situation. "It was so intriguing. From the moment I read it on the page, I was just like, 'This is such a bold, ambitious, exciting imaginative exploration of a question we've all asked ourselves -- what would we do if we put in the extreme position of having to choose between the person that we love and the greater good?'" Essiedu said in a recent Zoom interview. The show's title refers to a secret organization able to turn back time whenever the world is up against the threat of extinction. George is a computer app designer recruited to join the group after he unexpectedly becomes one of the only people on the planet who can feel when time is being reset. But when someone close to him is endangered, he challenges the organization to save the person even though it goes against its rules not to meddle in situations that aren't globally catastrophic. "George is a normal dude. He's an everyday kind of guy you meet at the coffee shop in the morning," Essiedu said. "He's a guy who does his job. He loves his girlfriend. He loves his life and then he gets put in this extraordinary situation." The character and his circumstances are wholly relatable. "You pit the ordinary against the extraordinary and you see the drama and the chaos that arises from that," Essiedu said. "I don't know what I would do if I was put in that same position, but I was excited to explore George's struggle to figure out whether what he was doing was the right thing or not." Even though he is not trained in law-enforcement, the military, science disciplines or international intelligence gathering, George has a lot to offer The Lazarus Project team. "He's put in an organization where so-and-so is with the Navy Seals, someone else has done MI6, someone else has worked with the Danish Special Forces and his history is in app design," Essiedu said. "His skills might not be as on point or obvious initially as you might hope, but he is a quick learner and a hard worker. He's someone, who once he puts his mind to something, he gets it done. That's why we see him progress so quickly through the ranks of the organization until he eventually becomes indispensable." While most of the world's population has no idea time has been reset or that they are reliving a day they've already experienced, those who work for The Lazarus Project retain the knowledge they accrue in between do-overs. "Everybody else, when the reset happens, their memories get wiped, so they just carry on as if nothing has happened," Essiedu said. "The thing about Lazarus agents is they carry their trauma, they carry the thrill, they carry the memory of the pain of all the things they've experienced in each reset, in each checkpoint, so you can't help but be affected by that." Whether the show inspires viewers to ask "what if?" more frequently, consider the different outcomes of a scenario more carefully or trust fate will take them where they need to go is up to the individual, according to Essiedu. "They say 'ignorance is bliss' and what you don't know can't hurt you, but knowledge is power and as a society of people that live in conjunction with each other, we've got to figure out the consequences of our actions, both on an individual basis and on a greater scale," Essiedu said. "It's crucial for us to continue questioning our existence -- asking what if? and how can we be better? -- but I definitely do not have the answers." Archie (Anjli Mohindra) is the member of the team who first contacts George and explains to him what is going on. "That's the person, I suppose, that he first trusts in the organization, but whether that is something that continues in exactly the same way over the course of the series, you've got to watch it and find out," Essiedu said. One of the things Essiedu loved best about doing the show is that it mixes genres, with moments of comedy, romance and action woven through the drama. "As an actor, you want that meal that has all those different ingredients and food groups and different palate types," he said. "That's what I feel this show serves up," he added. "It's got everything, metaphorically." Airing Sundays on TNT, the show co-stars Tom Burke, Caroline Quentin, Rudi Dharmalingam and Charly Clive co-star. Page 28 HAPPENINGS June 8, 2023 www.hap2it.com June 8, 2023 through June 14, 2023 ARIES (March 21-April 19) Possible issues between loved ones may be heading toward resolution. You might feel you need to step in and mediate, but it could be best to step back and let them work through things themselves. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may feel an intense desire for affection or intimacy, but it might not be possible right now. If you channel your energies into a passion project or your studies, you may discover new and exciting things to keep your attention in the meantime. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You could be feeling influenced by a strong drive toward material success and a need for authority. Solidify the lesson that loyalty and a commitment to fulfilling your promises is the superior choice when it comes to achievements. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now may be the time to focus on manners and being careful with your words. It can be easy to forget who you are talking to in the heat of the moment. Remember to be respectful in every encounter and you can avoid a falling out. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Demonstrate your abilities with confidence and people will be more willing to listen. Do your best to lead by example and treat others mindfully, and you can avoid confrontation. Be the best you can be and others will recognize your skills. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Social media can be a good escape from current darkness, but it may also be distracting you from seeing the light. Taking a step back and going for a walk may be the best way to recalibrate your mindset. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You could be feeling left out right now. Try not to take it personally. Sometimes you need to spend some time in the background so that you can leap into the foreground later on. Your current relationships may require honoring past obligations. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): It might feel like life has started to repeat itself day by day and put you in a rut. Getting your mind and heart racing could be just the escape from monotony you may be looking for. Seek out some new ideas and activities. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Changes may be coming to your life. Sometimes you can miss the tree in the forest but know that your heart can see more than your eyes ever could. Look past the crowd and look for the one person who matters the most to you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): It might seem like there are too many demands on your wallet currently. Your reputation may take a blow when it comes to office intrigues but you can prove your trustworthiness through hard work and meeting any deadlines. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): There may be more kindness in the world than you realize but it might not always be spoken aloud. You could find yourself overwhelmed with glad emotions when you receive an unexpected kind word or good deed. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): In the middle of the game, the rules may change without warning or explanation. If you find yourself behind due to older strategies, the answer is to learn and level up. You can learn to overcome frustrations if you keep a cool head. I see each and every film as a personal achievement. Whether I’m proud of a film or not is really how I kind of weigh up my emotions about something... But that said, if I just play Spider-Man for the rest of my life, I’d still be the luckiest kid alive. So there’s no complaints from me here.” In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Tom Holland, who is promoting his latest project, the twisty Apple TV+ dramatic thriller series, The Crowded Room, in which he plays Danny Sullivan, a seemingly harmless young man arrested for a shooting in 1979 New York, says he has no intention to let his superhero alter-ego keep him from opportunities. "It's been such an incredible time leading into this new album, and seeing all of the support from everyone has been beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of. That said, the last few months have been full on both mentally and physically, I haven't been home properly since Christmas and at the moment I'm struggling to get to grips with it all. I need to take a moment to rest and recover, to be at my best and ready for Glastonbury and all of the other incredible shows coming up so that I'm able to continue doing what I love for a long time to come. I hope everyone understands.” Singer Lewis Capaldi takes to Instagram to confirm he has canceled three weeks of upcoming shows to give himself time "to rest and recover." "This was right after I'd come out as gay and it was a time of exploration and also heartbreak. I think my relationship, or whatever you want to call it with Kate, very much encapsulates a certain dynamic that I consistently found myself in, which was falling for people that -- I think a lot of us do this -- who aren't fully available. And the sort of safety in that and the highs and the lows and the serotonin bump, and then it goes away." In their new memoir “Pageboy,” actor Elliot Page admits that he had a romance with actress Kate Mara before he came out as a transgender man. Mara was datingHandmaid's Taleactor Max Minghella when she also started seeing Page, then known as Ellen, in 2014. "I never thought I could be in love with two people and now I know I can," Page said Mara told him in his book. "I can't wait to meet this female Michael Scott!"
