Page 4 HAPPENINGS May 14, 2026 www.hap2it.comWhen Yakov Smirnoff takes thestage at the Kenosha ComedyClub May 29 and 30, audiencesexpecting a nostalgia act built onCold War punchlines may be in fora surprise. The man who once built a careeron the iconic phrase “What acountry!” is still funny—oftenhilariously so—but what hedelivers now carries somethingdeeper: a perspective forgedthrough reinvention, hardship andan enduring belief in the Americanspirit. At 75, Smirnoff is not justrevisiting his past. He’s reframingit.“There was writing on the wall in1989,” Smirnoff recalls. “Theirony is, I was chiseling that wall, the Berlin Wall, with Bob Hope—I just wasn’t reading what waswritten there.”That “writing” was the collapse ofthe Soviet Union—the verycultural tension that fueledSmirnoff’s meteoric rise in 1980sAmerica. Practically overnight, his comedic identity becameobsolete.Even David Letterman noticed, joking on a Top 10 list thatSmirnoff would be “out of work”after the Cold War ended.Smirnoff laughed at the time.Months later, when his contractsweren’t renewed, the joke hitcloser to home.“It wasn’t funny anymore,” hesays. What followed wasn’t acomeback—it was a rebuild. After struggling to find work,Smirnoff landed, almost byaccident, in Branson, Missouri, thanks to a nudge from WillieNelson. The transition wasn’tglamorous. His first show drewjust 17 people. His familydownsized drastically, even livingin a basement after financialsetbacks. But for Smirnoff, perspectivemattered. “Coming from acommunal apartment in the SovietUnion, the basement felt like aluxury,” he says.Over time, something unexpectedhappened: audiences connected—not just with the jokes, but withthe man behind them. Night afternight, the crowds grew. The showevolved. And Smirnoff found notjust a new audience, but a renewedsense of purpose. He has had hisown club in Branson since 1993.That connection remains theheartbeat of the show he brings onthe road—including to Kenosha, acity he says already feels familiarin spirit. His first appearance here camealmost by happenstance—a favorfor a friend celebrating ananniversary in the Chicago area.To make the trip worthwhile,Smirnoff added a stop in Kenosha. What he found was more than justanother gig. The audienceresponded—not just to the jokes, but to the message. And the cityitself made an impression.“The audience totally resonatedwith it,” Smirnoff says of hisshow’s emotional finish. “Theyunderstand what stage I’m in.”That stage is one of reflection, butalso of renewed momentum. ForSmirnoff, that kind of support isno small thing.“It’s a very important piece of thepuzzle,” he says. Today’sSmirnoff doesn’t rely ongeopolitical humor. Instead, hemines the universal—family, relationships and the quirks ofeveryday life. And he does itwithout ever crossing into theraunchy territory that has definedso many comedy eras.“I was never tempted,” he says.“Clean comedy was how I started, and it’s who I am.” Thatcommitment has become adefining strength, particularly ashis material has evolved intosomething more reflective—and,at times, unexpectedly profound.A turning point came not on stage, but in his personal life. After adivorce, Smirnoff began studyingpsychology, eventually earningadvanced degrees, including adoctorate in global leadership. Henow even teaches courses oncommunication and what he calls“the business of laughter.”What sparked that academicjourney? “I realized something,”he says. “Laughter dies first in arelationship. Before intimacy. Before anything else.”Then comes the punchline—delivered with perfect timing butrooted in hard truth. “Second isintimacy,” he adds. “And third isthe house.”It gets a laugh, but it also lands.“That’s the order,” Smirnoff says.“So if you can pay attention tolaughter, you might prevent thetrain wreck—and keep the house.”That insight—simple, human, andquietly powerful—now threadsthrough his act.In Kenosha, audiences will hearstories about his life in America, his recent experience becoming afather again at 75, and hisobservations about relationshipsbetween men and women. Thestory continues on page 8The last time Yakov Smirnoff came to Kenosha, it was a limited Sunday matinee. But he returnsfor a proper Kenosha Comedy Club weekend May 29 and 30. Afteran hour of laughter, Smirnoffshifts gears. The jokes give way tosomething closer to a reflection—a reminder of what he believes isstill true about the country heembraced decades ago—andsomething he says he felt clearly inKenosha. “Underneath everything—politics, arguments—Americans have hugehearts,” he says. “They can’t helpit.”That belief is not naïve. It’s hardearned. Smirnoff has seen Americaat its best and its most uncertain. He’s experienced both the heightsof fame and the humbling realityof reinvention. And yet, hisconclusion remains the same.“It’s still ‘What a country!’” hesays. “Maybe more than ever.”That message resonates in placeslike Kenosha—a city that, likemuch of America, balances pridein its past with questions about itsfuture. But it is also, in Smirnoff’sexperience, a place where peopleshow up ready to laugh—andready to connect. In his parlance,What a City! For Smirnoff, that’s everything.“My role now,” he says, his voicecatching slightly, “is to remindpeople who they are.” And if hisshow works the way he hopes, audiences won’t just leavelaughing. KENOSHA... WHAT A CITY!Yakov SmirnoffMay 29 & 30Get Tickets at050726The Back Story to Yakov’s Kenosha AppearanceAfter years of attempting to bring legendary comedian Yakov Smirnoff to the Kenosha Comedy Club our opportunity finally materialized. His agent informed us that Yakov, who normally avoids cold weather dates, would be in Chicago for a Saturday testimonial dinner and would be available for one, and only one, 4 pm show on Sunday, December 21. Needless to say, we jumped on the date and what transpired with his performance was magic, pure magic, ending with a standing ovation. After the show, Yakov confessed to us that immediately after he had committed to our date he had second thoughts, regrets that he had accepted our offer. However, he was so moved by the enthusiasm and warmth of the crowd that he realized our community is different, something special. The feelings seem to be mutual with an overwhelming response from fans who were in the audience that cold December afternoon and here’s what a few of them had to say after his performance.“Yakov is hilarious and witty and pure comedy gold. One of the most laugh-out-loud performances I’ve seen in a long time.”Serena Gapko“It was great to see a legend in action! Timelessly brilliant and funny.” Rose Mattax“We loved Yakov’s laugh-out-loud comedy and his heartwarming stories. He was funny, engaging and high energy. What a treat to be able to see him in Kenosha.” Jennie Tunkiez

Page 14 HAPPENINGS May 14, 2026 www.hap2it.comEvery year, millions of Americansvisit Ellis Island, where theirancestors may have arrived from\"the old country.\" But Europe hasmany excellent \"Ellis Islands inreverse\" – museums at the placeswhere millions said goodbye to theland of their birth. Is there anything more poignantthan a person willing to sacrificeeverything in pursuit of a betterlife for themselves and their lovedones? That’s the story of manyhard-scrabble Europeans headingoff to dreamed-of opportunities infar-off America. Others, whofaced persecution or evenstarvation, really had no choice – itwas leave or die. Across Europe, you’ll find excellent museums thattell some of these compellingstories. One of the best is EPIC: The IrishEmigration Museum. With somuch anxiety surroundingimmigration in the US today, thisthought-provoking experiencereminds visitors how manyAmericans were just as worriedabout Irish immigrants 160 yearsago.I had never fully appreciated theIrish diaspora until I visited here.Located in Dublin, EPICcelebrates how the little island ofIreland — with a population thatpeaked at just 8 million before itsperiod of great immigration — hashad an oversized impact on theworld. (An estimated 70 millionpeople worldwide now claim Irishheritage.) The museum uses ahigh-tech approach to explain theforces that scattered so many Irishpeople around the globe, whilehistoric photos of filthy tenementsand early films of bustling urbanscenes help you imagine yourselfin the shoes of the common Irishemigrant. On the continent, there are moreplaces to learn about the plight ofEuropean emigrants — includingthe cutting-edge Red Star LineMuseum in Antwerp, Belgium, which fills the hall that processedmany who passed through this portcity on their way to a new life. Inlate-19th-century Europe, theIndustrial Revolution and atremendous population boom ledto political instability andeconomic difficulties. During thegreat migration between 1873 and1935, the Red Star shipping linebrought some two millionemigrants from Antwerp to NewYork City. This was the exit point for peoplefrom all over Europe. Jews fleeingpogroms in Tsarist Russia andlater Nazi persecution in Germany– among them Irving Berlin,Golda Meir, and Albert Einstein –accounted for at least a quarter ofthe Red Star Line’s passengerstaken across the Atlantic. The 10-day steamer journey transportedcargo, luxury travelers, and“steerage-class” peasants alike. Before boarding, emigrantsunderwent humiliating healthexams and nervously waited whileclerks processed their paperwork. The Red Star Line Museumcombines personal stories withhigh-tech presentations to detailthe “other end” of the Ellis Islandexperience. One powerful exhibit– using wraparound video screens– drives home the point thatimmigration remains as commontoday as it was in the heyday ofEllis Island. Displays profileimmigrants throughout history –from the first humans who leftAfrica tens of thousands ofmillennia ago, to migrant workersof today. For anyone with Swedish heritage, the tidy House of Emigrants inVäxjö, Sweden, is a fascinatingstop. Its inspiring “Dream ofAmerica” exhibit captures theexperiences of the nearly 1.3million Swedes who sought abetter life in the Americanpromised land in the late 19th andearly 20th centuries. Economicwoes (and, much like in Ireland, apotato famine) wracked Swedenfrom the 1850s to the 1920s.Roughly 20 percent of the menand 15 percent of the women whowere born in Sweden during thelast half of the 19th century left.Rounding out the museum is anexhibit that pays homage toprominent Swedish-Americans –including aviator CharlesLindbergh and the second man onthe moon, Buzz Aldrin – and aresearch department that can helpyou trace your Swedish ancestry. With so many of us owing ourlives to ancestors who risked theirsemigrating to the US, it'simportant to learn about their epicjourney. Adding a visit to anemigration museum in Europe canhelp us appreciate our ownheritage, while also giving usgreater understanding towardthose currently seeking refuge onour own soil.By Rick StevesTracinghistory, heritage andhardship atEurope'semigrationmuseumsAAA estimates that 45 millionAmericans will be traveling atleast 50 miles from home overMemorial Day weekend, a slightuptick over last year.AAA reported its estimate lastMonday, forecasting an uptick intravel between Thursday, May 21and Monday, May 25. Page 20 HAPPENINGS May 14, 2026 www.hap2it.comGreg Schwem - A to ZAlert — From the time I get up until I goto bed, I am constantly on the lookout forfunny situations and wondering how Ican translate those observations to the stage.Better — I am always striving to make mynext performance better than the last one.Eventually I hope to swap “better” for“best.”Clean — I have always opted to work cleanas I don’t feel audience members come tocomedy shows in hopes of being offendedor feeling uncomfortable.Divorced — After a 29 year marriage, Ibecame a “Gray Divorcee” and ended upfinding humor in my situation by writinga book, Turning Gut Punches into Punch Lines:A Comedian’s Journey Through Cancer,Divorce and Other Hilarious Stuff.Effort — I give 100 percent to every show, whether there are 20 people in the crowdor 2,000.Fun — Just come to one of myperformances and you’ll see why.Grateful — I survived colon cancer.Every day is a gift, especially when I getto spend my days making strangerslaugh.Homebody — Yes, I’ve spent years on theroad, performed in 48 of 50 states andmore than a dozen foreign countries butI find I need a home base in order to rechargemy batteries. Chicago is that base for me.Innovative — Years ago, I switched fromdoing primarily comedy clubs to speakingat corporate events. I saw a lane that veryfew comedians were interested in pursuing, andI’ve driven in that lane ever since.Jovial — Okay, that one is kind of lame.Aren’t all comedians jovial?Kicked Butt! — I hope to say that afterevery performance when I get off stageand somebody says, “How did it go?”Longevity — I did my first stand-upcomedy performance when I was 16. Inever thought it would become a full-timecareer.More — I am always looking for newopportunities and stages. The worstthing about being a full-timecomedian is feeling you are in a rut.New — As in “new material.”: I don’t carehow many times you have seen my act.You will always hear something youdidn’t hear the last time.Optimistic — Despite AI taking over somany jobs, I am very confident thattechnology will never replace peoplewhen it comes to finding the funny in everydaylife.Participant — I created a TV series, AComedian Crashes Your Pad, where Istayed in strange Airbnb properties andfilmed my experiences with the host. Theywere the stars: I was just along for the ride. I’mnot afraid to admit when others are funnier thanme.Quick — I work best under deadlinepressure, whether it’s writing jokes for alast-minute show, or being available on amoment’s notice.Return engagement — Nothing says“good job” like being asked to return.I’ve played the Kenosha Comedy Clubmore than a dozen times. I must be doingsomething right.Starting Over — I’ve had to do it severaltimes, in my professional and personallife. It’s never easy but it always turns outbetter.Timely — Expect to hear material aboutcurrent topics, not necessarily political butjust topics on what is currently happeningin the world.Unafraid — I get on stages and vow tomake strangers laugh. What would youcall that?Voracious — How do I get my material? Iread constantly and immerse myself indifferent situations, which fuels myappetite for seeing the world through a differentlens.Wherever and Whenever — If youwant to hire me, that’s going to be myresponse.Xcellent — If you get one of those “howwas the comedian?” emails followingone of my shows, I hope you will choosethis response.Young — I am not going to reveal my age.Why bother? I feel young becauselaughing every day keeps me that way.Zero — the number of days per year thatI’m not trying to bring some laughs to arelative, friend or strangerTurning Gut Punches Into Punch Lines by Greg Schwem is a memoirthat explores how humor can help navigate life’s most difficultmoments. Best known as a stand-up comedian and corporate speaker,Schwem shifts from stage to page to recount a period marked bymajor personal challenges, including divorce and a cancer diagnosis.Rather than presenting these experiences in a purely dramatic way,Schwem approaches them with the same observational style thatdefines his comedy. The book follows his adjustment to unexpected lifechanges, from living alone after years of marriage to reentering thedating world and rethinking his daily routines. These transitions arepresented through a mix of storytelling and reflection, grounded inreal-life situations rather than exaggerated setups.A central theme of the book is perspective. Schwem does notignore the seriousness of what he faces, but instead examines howhumor can coexist with uncertainty and loss. His background as aperformer allows him to find moments of irony and relatability, even in uncomfortablesituations. At the same time, the narrative remains focusedon the realities of starting over and adapting to changelater in life. The book also highlights the importance ofconnection, whether through friendships, professionalinteractions, or shared experiences with audiences.Schwem’s voice remains consistent throughout—measured, candid, and rooted in lived experience.Ultimately, Turning Gut Punches Into Punch Lines presentsa straightforward idea: difficult moments are unavoidable, but the way they are interpreted and shared can shapehow they are endured..Greg Schwem returns to the Kenosha Comedy Club May 15th & 16th.Get your tickets now athap2it.com Attendees willreceive a free, signed copy of Greg’s book (one per household)Feature Story.qxp_My Turn 1-2H 5/12/26 2:46 PM Page 1

The lendersays his parents can gift him thehouse and the lender will then setup a refinance loan for him.Would the transfer of the home tomy friend cause his parents topay some type of tax to the IRS?A: No. The transfer itselfwouldn’t trigger immediate taxesfor either the parents or yourfriend in the year the gift is made. For 2025, the annual gift taxexclusion is $19,000 per person. This means each parent couldgive your friend $19,000 (for atotal of $38,000) without anyreporting requirements or taxconsequences. Your friend wouldreceive this money tax-free aswell. The same principle appliesto the home, except that we canassume the home’s value farexceeds $38,000.When the gift exceeds theannual exclusion amount, theparents would be required to fileForm 709 (United States Gift andGeneration-Skipping TransferTax Return) with the IRS. Youmight wonder why the IRS caresabout tracking these gifts if notax is due immediately. Theanswer relates to estate taxes onwealthy individuals. The IRSwants to ensure that people don’tavoid estate taxes by simply giving away all their assets beforethey die.The lifetime gift and estate taxexemption for 2025 is$13,990,000. This means the parents can give away up to thisamount during their lifetime andat death before owing any federalestate or gift taxes. When the parents file Form 709 for the homegift, the IRS counts that giftagainst their lifetime exemption.Unless they’ve already givenWhat are the tax implicationsof gifting a home?story continues on page 31HomesPlus.qxp_HAPPENINGS FULL AD TEMPLATE 5/12/26 1:07 PM Page 27051426We’re Here For You... Yousee it in clothing, paint colors, new cars and trucks, etc. This isdone to pry dollars from yoursavings account. New products ofevery type fuel the economy.I’ve been in the industry longenough to remember when interlocking concrete bricks were thecat’s meow. People used theirdriveways to share how cool theywere. Many of these are the samefolks you see on social mediashowing off what they just did, what they just bought, or anyother news that puts them at theforefront of what’s cool. The family that lives next tomy son invested many tens ofthousands of dollars in creatingan outdoor patio oasis that has anoutdoor kitchen. It also has alarge human soup bowl. Theycall it a hot tub. A fire pit surrounded by four chairs is on alower level of the patio. The largeoutdoor kitchen dominates theupper patio area.Their stainless-steel barbecueis almost 6 feet wide. Fire up allthe burners, and you could cookfor a party of 20 or 30 people. The only thing missing in thissetup is an outdoor sink. It wouldbe quite easy to install one, although you’d have to use apoint-of-use heater to get hotwater.I spent a few days a week agowith good friends who live inSouthern California. They hadjust finished a full remodel oftheir in-ground swimming poolarea. The entire pool was repipedand coated with a delightful granular coating. www.hap2it.com May 14, 2026 HAPPENINGS Page 31The centerpiece of the pool project was a magnificent outdoorkitchen. An open timber-framestructure keeps part of this outdoorkitchen dry from rain showers. Awind-driven rain will get everything wet for sure. Rain inSouthern California is not a nuisance as it is in many other parts ofthe USA.This kitchen had a great design. It was L-shaped with a domedpizza oven in the corner. The heatrequired to bake a pizza was supplied by a wood fire or an electricheating element. The firewood wasstored in an arched nook at the farend of the kitchen counter. It was aclever use of space. The gas-fired stainless-steel barbecue was placed three feet awayfrom the pizza oven. There wasjust enough space for a person tobe flipping burgers and bratwurstsand not bump into a person checking on how brown the cheese wason the pizza. You must think aboutthese conflicts when developingyour plan.A large stainless steel kitchensink was next to the pizza oven. There were 16 inches of counterspace next to the right side of thesink. I’m willing to bet my friendswill discover they could havemade this leg of the kitchen counter at least 3 feet longer. The base of the entire kitchenwas made from native rocks. Themason did an extraordinary job ofpicking an assortment of smallgranite and other metamorphicrocks. The colors and texturesblended together creating a striking rustic appearance.Storage cabinets were built intothe stone base under the barbecue, pizza oven and sink. The wooddoors with rustic hinges and handles matched the stone base to atee.Countertop construction is critical. You need everything to bewaterproof. My friends went witha 4-inch thick colored concrete top.It was troweled smooth as silk. Allof the edges were rounded, creating a very smart appearance. Thetop had a 2-inch overhang past thefront surface of the stone walls.Planning an outdoor kitchenrequires more thought than oneinside a home, in my opinion.Weather extremes should be at thetop of your list of concerns. Ice andsnow can cause severe damage tothe kitchen components when thekitchen is out of service in the deepwinter. Water will cause anyunprotected steel or iron to rust. All metal should be stainless steelor brass to prevent issues. What about the blazing sun?You may already suffer when usingyour stand-alone barbecue grillwhen out on your driveway. I’mthinking you don’t want to bedrenched in sweat while grilling inyour new outdoor kitchen. Howwill you shade yourself?Utility connections are veryimportant. All electrical work mustmeet the latest requirements of theNational Electrical Code. Shockhazards are real in these outdoorkitchens.Sink plumbing is also critical. How will you dispose of the graywater from the sink? How will youdrain your water pipes if you livein a cold climate? You need tomake it easy to winterize the supply and drain piping. You may be able to extend natural gas to your new barbecue grill.I did that many years ago in mylast home. I never again had toworry about running out ofpropane halfway through a meal.Remember, you can’t bury an irongas pipe. All gas lines must meetthe National Fuel Gas Code. It’s wise to look at lots of photosof outdoor kitchens before youstart to plan. Look at each kitchenwith a critical eye. Think aboutcounter space. Consider how multiple people may bump into oneanother when cooking is in fullgear. What about refrigeration?Ask vendors for photographs orvideos of kitchens they’veinstalled. Once again, think aboutthe spacing of appliances, the easeof cleaning things, and how you’llstay comfortable while using thekitchen.Outdoor kitchen tipscontinued from page 28away close to $13,990,000 inassets, they won’t owe any gift taxnow, but the amount will betracked. Here’s where your friend needsto think carefully about timing. There’s a crucial tax differencebetween receiving the home as agift now versus inheriting it afterthe parents pass away. If yourfriend receives the home as a gifttoday, he takes on his parents’original cost basis in the property. For example, if they purchased thehome for $100,000 decades agoand it’s now worth $500,000, yourfriend would have a $100,000basis. If he later sells the home for$500,000, he’d owe capital gainstax on the $400,000 profit. In contrast, if your friend inherits the home after his parents die,he would receive a stepped-upbasis equal to the home’s fair market value at the time of the last parent’s death. If the home is worth$1,000,000 at that time, yourfriend could sell it immediately for$1,000,000 with no capital gainstax liability whatsoever. One potential offset exists ifyour friend currently lives in thehome as his primary residence. Ifhe’s lived there for at least two ofthe last five years, he can exclude$250,000 of gain ($500,000 if married) from capital gains tax whenhe sells. We wish parents would thinkthrough these sorts of gift decisions, as they can have a substantial downstream impact for theirheirs. We strongly recommendyour friend and his parents consultwith an estate planning attorneywho understands the tax implications of these transactions beforemoving forward. The potential taxsavings from proper planningcould be significant.By Ilyce Glink & Samuel J.
