While it has plenty ofpretty canals and gables, it alsoenjoys a certain amount of urbangrittiness, with a welcome splashof creative hipster funkiness.Ghent is very walkable, and Ienjoy strolling through the oldtown in this extremely Flemishcity, where the native language isDutch – but everyone also speaksEnglish.I start in a square calledKorenmarkt (Grain Market), thecenter of historic Ghent. This stilllooks much like it did circa 1500,when this was one of Europe'sgreatest cities, bristling withskyscraping towers, rich with art,and thronged with hard-workingand prosperous citizens. Backthen, Ghent’s population wasaround 65,000 – north of the Alps,only Paris was larger. Two-thirdsof its citizens were textile workers,meaning Ghent was arguablyEurope’s first industrial city. Withits wealth, it became the proud cityof soaring towers you see today.Near the square, I wander onto St.Michael’s Bridge, which providesGhent’s best 360-degreepanorama. The waterway undermy feet – now plied by touristladen boats – was the city’s busyharbor. Lining the embankmentare several ornately decoratedguild houses – meeting halls forthe town’s boatmen, grain traders,and weighers.Turning around, I then head awayfrom the river. Beyond a medievalchurch stands the big, wooden roofof the market hall. Just a coupledecades ago, this space was nomore than an ugly parking lot.Now, it’s a public square, partiallysheltered by the hall’s moderntwin-gabled roof, meant to evokethe rooftops of medieval Ghent.While many residents embrace themarket, some find its avant-gardestyle jarring. (It’s been called the\"Sheep Shed\" and the “Hall ofShame.”)Next door is the Belfry. Althoughmost of this tower has stood heresince the 14th century, its NeoGothic top spire was added whenGhent proudly hosted a World’sFair in 1913. Visitors ascend theBelfry to share the gargoyles’decent, if not stunning, view overtown.On the other side of the Belfry isSt. Bavo’s Square and Ghent’s topsight: St. Bavo’s Cathedral.
