It is a pleasure to introduce the SWGS Sixth Form to you. The vast majority of our Year 11s choose to continue their studies in our sixth form and are joined by many students, both male and female, from a range of other schools. Students who start in the sixth form are quickly integrated and make a significant contribution to school life. We are a progressive community and everything we do is underpinned by our supportive and individualised pastoral care, inclusiveness, and a rich and varied curriculum delivered by expert and passionate staff. It is for these reasons that our results are outstanding and we regularly feature in The Sunday Times’s top state schools. As Headteacher, I feel proud to lead this wonderful school and community; we are confident that you will love it as much as we do. We look forward to welcoming you to our school and the contribution you will make to help shape its future. Welcome from the Headteacher
02 “I joined South Wilts Grammar School in Year 12 and I have loved every second of it. The sixth form is absolutely amazing, giving you a variety of opportunities” SWGS Student
02 The sixth form is such a vibrant and interesting place to be that we feel we have the best job in the school. Our students are committed and passionate about their studies but, as importantly, they contribute so much to the life of the school community. Although the sixth form is large enough to be lively and exciting, it is small enough that we know each student as an individual. We have one guiding principle: to do what is best for each of our students, to ensure that they are well cared for and can achieve their unique potential. Welcome from the Directors of Sixth Form
We recognise that each student’s academic interests are different and so one of the defining features of the SWGS Sixth Form is the wide range of A-Levels on offer. Students have free choice to study 3 or 4 A-Levels from 25 different subjects encompassing the sciences, humanities, languages and arts. Alongside this, students’ experiences are enhanced by opportunities such as the Extended Project Qualification, Level 3 Core Maths or Further Maths. Whatever your interest, we have something to inspire everyone! A broad curriculum promoting academic excellence
02 “The environment is focused and supportive as all students encourage one another to try their best.” SWGS Student
“Sixth form life enables you to meet more people as they come into the school and to grow closer to people in your year through the open atmosphere of the sixth form common areas.” SWGS Student
02 SWGS’s classrooms are vibrant places to learn. Our expert, highly knowledgeable teachers stretch and inspire our students so that they not only get outstanding results, but have a superb experience along the way. In any lesson the atmosphere is one of shared endeavour, with motivated, interested students and thought-provoking discussion. We take care to offer our students first-rate academic support, including 1:1 teacher mentoring and many lunchtime help sessions so that each student achieves their academic potential. This is supported by high quality facilities including dedicated study suites and a sixth form café. A challenging and exciting experience where students are inspired to learn
Our strong extra-curricular programme is woven into the fabric of the school. Walk into SWGS on any given day and you will find our students immersed in an enormous variety of activities. It might be singing in one of the numerous stunning choirs, playing sport, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, mentoring younger students, leading Young Enterprise or taking part in a debate. All students have the opportunity to undertake high quality work. In recent years, placements have included working with barristers and biochemists, mechanics and medics, parliamentarians and police, virtual reality software developers and vets. Students’ cultural capital is enhanced by a range of exciting visits such as history and literary festivals, theatre visits, overseas visits including trips to Barcelona, Rome and Washington. Every day forms part of the rich tapestry that is the SWGS Sixth Form experience. A rich experience with many extra-curricular opportunities
02 “We are encouraged to seize every opportunity we can, both one-off chances and regular commitments.” SWGS Student
