CARITAS EXCELLENCE TOGETHER

PROSPECTUS

01

A very warm welcome to our happy,
friendly and successful school

When students gain a place at Cardinal Newman Catholic
School they will be welcomed into a community that prides
itself on its care for each individual.

Our school Mission Statement celebrates the uniqueness of
each student. It is our goal to offer the appropriate level of
support, stimulation and challenge that ensures individual
growth and excellence.

Working together with parents and carers, we aim to raise
every student in a warm, secure environment built on Christian
principles of Caritas that prepares them for the world they will
meet as adults. Care, support, clear behaviour systems and
academic challenge are our guidelines and we are confident
that your child will benefit from their time with us.

“We are very appreciative of all the staff do to support our son, both academically
and the pastoral care. I was particularly impressed with the transition/pastoral care

moving from Year 6 to Year 7 and think this is a definite strength of the school.”

Providing an excellent Catholic
education for all of our students

Our mission is to provide an excellent Catholic education for all
of our students which enables them to respond to the Call of
Christ throughout their lives.

Caritas – the love which is God – is the golden thread running
through everything we do. We welcome and accept all our students
and staff as unique individuals created in the image of God.

Working together, we treat one another with kindness and respect.
We are a community of Caritas where everyone feels safe, supported
and inspired to make a difference in our local, national and global
communities. We strive for the highest quality of learning and teaching
that inspires us all to discover and develop our God-given gifts and
talents, to excel in the present and aim high for the future.

Consistently high exam results
and excellent academic progress

We have a long tradition of achievement and success and have
regularly been the best school in the city for GCSE and A-level
results. Our students leave for some of the best Universities in
the world, including Oxford and Cambridge and those in the
Russell Group.

We offer a broad and balanced curriculum that includes both
creative and traditional academic subjects. Our excellent
extra-curricular programme enhances each student’s learning
experience and includes enrichment workshops, clubs and
societies plus day and residential visits.

Our sports teams and individuals enjoy an excellent reputation and
considerable success together in competitions at local, county and
national level too.

Strong, professional, dedicated
teaching staff and pastoral care

Our teaching staff are specialists with excellent subject knowledge,
qualified to teach up to A-level. We seek to remain at the cutting
edge of teaching and learning.

We have a commitment to the ongoing professional development
of all our teaching staff and we encourage continuous improvement
and learning through our work with the Pavilion and Downs
Teaching School Alliance, the Prince’s Teaching Institute and other
partners.

Our commitment to Caritas means that, when students arrive,
they have a Form Tutor and Pastoral Leader who will guide
them through their learning journey. The pastoral team work
together with parents, carers and students to monitor each
child’s happiness and progress.

and have a good rapport with them.”

09

A reputation for excellent
standards of behaviour

We are very proud to continuously receive comments about
how polite and well-mannered our students are from visitors to
the school. From Day One, our students are taught to understand
our ethos of Caritas and observe our 3 key rules: Be polite,
Be punctual, Be prepared.

We have a rewards and sanctions system in place whereby
students are offered achievement points for being polite, punctual
and prepared. We also reward and recognise student effort and
attitudes to learning.

We actively encourage student contribution and leadership and
have buddy, mentor and prefect programmes in place. We also have
a Student Council who are actively involved in the school and work
together with staff to make a valuable contribution to how it is run.
