Grass Cutting For Further information contact

often gives clues as to who the occupant
might be and an overgrown garden may well
be perceived as belonging to an older person
who is no longer capable of cutting the grass
and therefore possibly vulnerable to the
‘bogus’ caller.
For this reason Age Concern Salisbury District
provide a grass cutting service between the
months of April and October.
AGE UK
Age Concern England and Help The Aged have
joined forces to create Age UK , a powerful new
organisation, to make your later life better.
Age Uk has a vision of a world in which older people
flourish. We aim to improve later life for everyone
through our information and advice, services,
campaigns, products, training and research.
Age Uk supports and assists a network of over 330
local Age Uks and Age Concerns including Age
Concern Salisbury District. Each Age UK and Age
Concern is an independent local charity and
together we work in a strong partnership to promote
actively the well-being of people in later life through
national and local campaigns, influencing policy,
fundraising, and through our range of products and
services described in this guide.
Befriending
Our team of volunteers can provide regular
home visits to housebound older people for a
social chat. If you feel you would like someone
to come (or telephone you ) for a regular social
chat , or know someone who would benefit for
this service contact us .
Telephone befriending
We have 48 clients who regularly
receive a social call from the same
dedicated volunteer each week.
Last year 22 clients were befriended by 18
volunteers but the demand for the service is
such we would like to double the capacity and
would be keen to hear from potential
befriending volunteers.
‘Receiving a telephone
call from a volunteer is
so reassuring to know
that someone cares, as
I have no one nearby.’
Nail Clipping
As you get older cutting your toe-nails can become
very difficult, or impossible, our friendly nail-cutting
assistant can help. Appointments are available at
our Brown Street premises on Monday and
Thursday afternoons.
We will shortly provide outreach nail clipping clinics
in conjunction with the Day Centres in the area.
In 2009-10 291 appointments were provided.
‘It was a constant
struggle for both of us
before we started using
your service.’
Theatre Club
A club exclusively for older people living in South
Wiltshire who enjoy live theatre but would prefer to
go in the company of others.
The Theatre Club provides the opportunity to make
new friends and enjoy live theatre at reduced prices.
New members are welcomed by a volunteer host at
the first event they attend, to introduce them to other
members. Although Age Concern Salisbury District
does not arrange transport for these events, they are
able to put theatre members in touch with others
who would be willing to offer a lift - or share a taxi.
Campaigning
Locally we campaign on issues that affect older
people in South Wiltshire and nationally through
Age UK campaign to change policy to improve the
lives of people in later life.
Volunteer
Age Concern Salisbury District could not
function without the valuable help of
volunteers.
They assist in many ways ; by becoming
Trustees, representing Age Concern Salisbury
District at meetings and giving talks, helping
organise and assist fundraising events,
answering queries in the Information and
Advice office , providing administrative
support etc. In addition trained volunteers
visit older people in their own homes, if they
are unable to get to our office, to help
complete forms, apply for benefits etc.
Volunteers are the voice of the social
telephone service, where conversation over
the phone can be the highlight of an older
person’s week. Some volunteers become
befrienders visiting an older person in their
own home for a chat .
Older Peoples Forum
The Forum is funded by Wiltshire Council and
the local Primary Care Trust and is frequently
consulted by them on strategy and policy
issues.
In the last year in addition to a number of
consultations the Forum has campaigned to
improve the state of repair of pavements in
Salisbury and held a very interesting general
election debate where the candidates for
Salisbury put forward their party’s policies for
older people and answered questions from the
Forum members.
The Forum meets regularly on Wednesday
afternoons in an easily accessible location ,
and transport can be arranged.
