HELPING EVERYONE REACH THEIR POTENTIAL

Welcome to Woodfield Academy

I take great pleasure in offering you a warm welcome to Woodfield
Academy and I encourage you to consider Woodfield as the school of
choice for your child’s ‘middle years’ education.

Woodfield is a successful academy: we work hard to ensure our pupils make excellent
academic progress, which is complemented by our commitment to guiding their
development as caring, happy and tenacious young people. As a community, we live by
numerous core values, which represent the characteristics we would all wish to instil
in our own children; everything that we do is embodied in our simple philosophy that
we are working in partnership to help everyone reach their potential. This is reflected in
the comments made in our most recent “Good” Ofsted inspection (February 2017)

Whilst we pride ourselves on our achievements and identity, we collaborate closely
with our partner first schools and high school, which make up our school pyramid.
The quality of ‘through’ education within this structure is of a high standard and our
role within this system is to ensure that our pupils gain confidence in their abilities,
obtain truly transferable skills and are thoroughly prepared for high school when they
leave us at the end of Year 8.

Pupils at Woodfield enjoy excellent facilities and a spacious, well-maintained campus
and these complement the ethos of the academy. We maintain consistent and
demanding standards of behaviour and have high expectations of our pupils
in the classroom. As a result, we are often complimented on the learning atmosphere
around the academy and the polite, friendly welcome that our visitors receive.
This is a rewarding place in which to learn and work; we continue to commit to
high educational standards and excellent working relationships between our pupils
and our highly motivated and supportive staff team.

I hope that you decide to choose Woodfield Academy for your child and I look forward
to welcoming you in person very soon.

Steve Bond, Headteacher

Why choose Woodfield?

Children’s ‘middle school years’ represent a time of wide-ranging intellectual, physical and emotional
development. Key Stage 2 assessment and the important work that follows all take place within our
academy, hence we are able to maximise learning, develop experience and skills to ensure children
meet their full potential in a safe environment where their needs are valued and met.

• Specialist teaching widens interest and maintains enthusiasm, developing confident
and independent young people

• Our curriculum is matched to the developmental needs of our pupils, preparing them
for 21st century life

• We strike a balance between subject-focused learning and the needs of our ‘young
adolescents’, providing a foundation for life-long learning

• Our academy remains a child-centred, nurturing environment and teachers and pupils
know each other well. Respectful working relationships are valued and promoted

• We recognise the wide range of strengths and talents of our pupils and nurture these
through a host of curricular, enrichment and extra-curricular opportunities.

Our mission is:

• To nurture and encourage happy, successful and confident young people who develop
potential and aim high

• To constantly reflect as learners and practitioners and to explore and utilise our
individual strengths

• To respect individuality and cultivate a sense of belonging.

Ensuring the very best outcomes for our children:

We know and understand our pupils well. We know that they learn best when they are safe, happy
and healthy and when they are able to contribute to school and community life. We also appreciate
the differing academic and social needs of our pupils. We therefore provide:
• A safe environment and a sense of belonging
• Clear routines and expectations
• An active School Council that represents the entire pupil body
• A focus on each child’s progress and learning style to inform teaching and tailor learning for all
• A programme of opportunities for our ‘Most Able pupils’
• Nurture facilities, one-to-one and small group provision for social and emotional development
• Significant resources devoted to supporting those with additional needs.

Going the extra mile… the Woodfield way:

We are committed to extending learning beyond the classroom and value the ‘informal’ learning
opportunities that our experienced staff offer:
• Frequent trips and a host of visiting authors, speakers and performers throughout the year
• Numerous residential visits at home and abroad offer opportunities for adventure
• Sports fixtures take place throughout our calendar, emphasising team spirit
• A wide variety of lunchtime and after-school clubs, plus breakfast club for ‘early birds’.

“You allow pupils to learn about
the arts and sports in ways that

promote their curiosity.”

Preparing for 21st Century Life:

Here at Woodfield, we believe that the pace of our technological age should
not overshadow the core values that develop good character.
We therefore do our utmost to strike a balance in the following ways:

• Commitment to maintaining our excellent, state of the art ICT facilities
• A blended approach to technological and traditional learning opportunities
• Embracing social media to communicate with parents and carers
• Broadening pupils’ experiences through values-based assemblies and community support
• Practical learning opportunities that develop self-confidence and independence
• A clear, comprehensive disciplinary system and Code of Conduct
• Celebrating achievement and rewarding good behaviour, effort and attendance.

“Throughout your school there is
a real sense of the reality of
your school ethos.”

Working and Learning through Partnership

• Our Governing Body takes on a visible, important and strategic role
• We work closely with our partner ‘pyramid’ schools and beyond
• We ensure a smooth transition for children who join the school at any point in the year
• The ‘Friends of Woodfield’ (our PTA) work tirelessly to organise regular fundraising events
• Learning and reward opportunities are supported regularly by local businesses
• Our impressive facilities are used regularly for out-of-hours clubs and community social events
• Regular updates on school life and events are available via our website and social media
• We report regularly to parents, including online and we welcome their feedback.

We are a ‘listening’ school: parents are welcome to attend coffee mornings,
assemblies, parents’ evenings, or simply make an appointment to speak
to any member of the team; we look forward to meeting you.

“Teaching leads to pupils’ good “Staff are well trained and share what

teaching that challenges them.”

AN ENRICHED 08
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

We expect all our Sixth Form students to be positive
role models to the rest of the school and we provide a
range of leadership opportunities for them to engage in
and contribute to the school and local community.

All students are required to follow a General Religious Education
course which allows them to explore complex issues within society
and the Church. As an outstanding Catholic school, spiritual and moral
development is embedded in everything we do. The school Chaplain
works closely with the Sixth Form and there are many opportunities
for personal growth through community service within and
beyond the school.

In addition, students benefit from a wealth of leadership and
enrichment opportunities from the Residential Induction Retreat and
Duke of Edinburgh schemes through to various Prefect responsibilities
and educational visits and journeys both at home and abroad.
