Seldom seen terrapin beauties

BY KEN GRUDENS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST

Diamondback terrapins are beautiful turtles that live their entire
lives in brackish coastal habitats like our Indian River Lagoon.
These medium-sized turtles are easily identified by the distinc-
tive spotted pattern on their whitish skin. There are different
subspecies of the diamondback terrapin that live along much of
the Atlantic coast, down into the Florida Keys and along the Gulf
coast; all are believed to be in decline due to historic over-har-
vesting, habitat destruction, and predation by animals such as
raccoons and household pets. The Florida east coast diamond-
back terrapin is the subspecies found in our Lagoon.

Terrapins are a seldom seen, but important species in the food
chain. Terrapin eggs are a common food source for both small
mammals and birds. Conversely, these turtles help disperse sea
grass seeds via their digestive system.

Recently, the Indian River Land Trust, working with Coastal Bi-
ology and the Florida Institute of Technology, found thirteen of
these elusive reptiles living at the 111-acre Bee Gum Point Na-
ture Preserve owned by the Land Trust. They were identified
as part of an effort to document and monitor their abundance
and distribution in the region. Their presence at Bee Gum Point
is good news for this protected wetland, but efforts are needed
to further protect and enhance our remaining coastal wetlands
for this diminishing species. For more information, visit https://

“Every time you rate a wine or change
a rating, we reevaluate your preferenc-

with Pam Dillon of Wine Ring.

Rating wines on Wine Ring is easy.
It give you four choices: heart, thumbs
