JULIA HELICONIA
PHOTO BY ED PERRY delighting local butterfly enthusiasts.

NATURE Ten years ago, the Julia Heliconia began appearing sporadically
in Indian River County and five years ago was spotted laying eggs in
local hammocks. A favorite native host plant upon which their larvae
feed is Corky Stem Passion Vine. The northward range expansion of

this species is continuing and a specimen was recently spotted
at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Last fall, an Indian River Land Trust volunteer photographed a Ruddy
Daggerwing butterfly at the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area. These
were seldom seen in Indian River County in the past, but at least half

a dozen sightings have been reported in recent years. The Ruddy
Daggerwing’s larval host plant is various species of Ficus,
including our native Strangler Fig.

And for the past two years, Atala butterflies have been spotted at various
county locations as well as their eggs and larva on native cycad, Coontie.

This is a special thrill for butterfly enthusiasts as the Florida subspecies
was once thought to have been driven to extinction from
overharvesting of the cycad host plants.

Still to come: The next eagerly hoped for coming attraction is the beautiful
green Malachite Butterfly Rare sightings have been made in Vero Beach in

the past but what gives hope for more frequent appearances is that the
butterfly has expanded north into Broward County and become
somewhat seasonally common in Okeechobee.
