Space coasts. 2020, said Kim DeLaney, the council’s di-
rector of strategic development and policy.
The company started providing service

May 2018. The trains operate from 5 a.m. cials said Virgin Trains officials told them
they anticipated starting construction by
the end of this year.

Virgin Trains may accelerate the time-
line for developing a station in Fort Pierce
or Stuart because of unexpectedly high
Treasure Coast ridership, DeLaney said.
Cocoa is also in line for a station.

But all 34 daily passenger trains would
not stop at the Treasure and Space coast
stations, DeLaney said.

“Occasional trains, as it’s been de-
scribed, would be stopping at those other
smaller market stations,” DeLaney said.

In addition, Virgin Trains plans to install
enough safety devices and warnings at
Treasure and Space coast railroad cross-
ings to meet Federal Railroad Adminis-
tration requirements for “quiet zones” to
be established by city and county govern-
ments, DeLaney said.

Essentially, the safety gates, center
medians, flashing lights, alarm bells and
warning signs at the crossings are consid-
ered so effective that train horns would
not further deter motorists or pedestrians
from getting onto the tracks, DeLaney said.

“There are a series of analyses that are
required for local governments to under-
take to prove mathematically that with
all of that additional safety infrastructure,
we’ve made the crossing as safe as we can,”
DeLaney said. “Blowing a horn in addition
isn’t going to make a difference.”

The establishment of Virgin Trains pas-
senger service between Orlando and Mi-
ami is a key component in the develop-
ment of a passenger rail system in Florida’s
urban areas.

Long-range plans call for Virgin Trains
to connect to Tri-Rail and South Florida
Regional Transportation Authority com-
muter lines to enhance transit in Miami.

Plans also call for Virgin Trains to con-
nect to the SunRail commuter line in
Orlando and the passenger rail service
planned between Orlando and Tampa.

Indian River County Commissioner
Peter O’Bryan questioned whether Virgin
Trains was moving toward a commuter
service from a passenger service. “Have
they done a ridership study to show this is
going to be feasible?” O’Bryan asked.

DeLaney said she would request a rider-
ship study from Virgin Trains.

“We haven’t been provided that infor-
mation thus far,” DeLaney said. “Lots of
inquiring minds would like to know.” 

THE ROBOTS GOT SOME MONEY BACK WEST NORTH EAST
10 7 5 3 2 AKQJ 9864
By Phillip Alder - Bridge Columnist 95 10 8 J43
5 AJ862 K974
After having three consecutive six-heart contracts while playing with my wife online at K7642 Q3 J5
bridgebase.com last month, the next evening, the robots (computer-controlled opponents)
got some revenge in this deal. SOUTH

Note North’s correct two-diamond response. With game-going values, bid your longest suit AKQ762
first. Since the robots use two-over-one game-forcing, I would have been inclined to rebid Q 10 3
two hearts with that South hand, but the robots were playing that three clubs promised A 10 9 8
extra strength. The next two calls were natural, then four no-trump was Roman Key Card
Blackwood. South’s six-heart reply showed an odd number of key cards (here, two aces and Dealer: South; Vulnerable: Both
the heart king) and a spade void. Scientific bidders, those robots!
The Bidding:
I led my singleton diamond. Declarer rose with dummy’s ace and, presumably in the dummy
for the last time, cashed all four spade winners, discarding three clubs and a diamond from SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING
hand. Then South drew trumps and conceded one diamond trick. (Yes, the fourth spade was 1 Hearts Pass 2 Diamonds Pass
unnecessarily dangerous.) 3 Clubs Pass 3 NT Pass LEAD:
4 Hearts Pass 4 NT Pass 5 Diamonds
There were four tables in six no-trump, which had 12 top tricks. Two pairs of robots tried six 6 Hearts Pass Pass Pass
diamonds after the sequence one heart - two diamonds - three clubs - three no-trump - six
diamonds. One was favored by the heart-jack start, but the other faced the club-jack lead,
after which the contract was unmakable without the aid of X-ray vision.

The other 11 tables were in six hearts. One robot even made an overtrick when West led a
low club, and declarer guessed to put up dummy’s queen.

SWINGING ACTION:
DITCH THE TENSION,
FEEL THE FREEDOM

The movement we make when hitting a

full shot is called a golf swing, because it is,

indeed, a swinging action. However, most

of us are too tense to accomplish the free

movement. Let’s dig it a bit more and take a

closer and more technical look at the swing-

ing action.

The golf swing is actually a double pendu-

lum. A pendulum is a weight suspended from

a pivot so that it can swing KEVIN’S
freely. The two pendulums KURES
of the golf swing are the
arms suspended from our

shoulders, and our club

suspended from our wrists.

GREEN DAY! Unfortunately, because

Port St. Lucie Assistant Police Chief Richard Del Toro, most of us are so tense, we
above, tees off during the PAL Annual Golf Tournament
at Gator Trace Golf & Country Club, proceeds from which don’t feel the free motion

points. We don’t allow the By Kevin Perkins
PHOTOS: LINDA KLOORFAIN arms to swing freely from

our shoulders and we don’t allow the club to

move freely about the hands and wrists. We

strangle the natural effects of gravity and re-

place it with tension, force and excessive ef-

fort.

If you do allow both pendulums to swing

and move correctly, you will begin to tap into

the effortlessness of the swinging motion and

the beauty of the double pendulum.

The following are a few “Kures” to tap into

the free motion:

1. Arm swing. Your arms represent almost

15 percent of your body weight. Turn your

shoulders and feel the heaviness of your arms

pulling and swinging away from your shoul-

ders.

2. Relax your writs joints. Hold the club

lighter and feel the weight of the clubhead as

it pulls away from your arms to feel the sec-

ond pendulum. It will also help to feel the

forearms rotate back on the back swing and

rotate on the forward swing.

Finally, as the great Ben Hogan once was

quoted as saying, he felt like his arms were

swinging off his shoulders and his wrists and

club were going to fly off his arms. That’s a

great picture to sense and feel a true swinging

force. 
