My (Important) Hearing Aid Experience

I am finally out of the shadows and living a fuller life, and I want to share
my story with you. This may be happening to you!

In about 1990, due to emotional trauma that resulted in Meniere's Disease and
hearing loss in my left ear, I entered the world of the hearing impaired. I began wearing hearing
aids for about 10 years, but there was never a proper, satisfying correction for my particular
issue. So, I stopped wearing them and re-entered the hearing impaired world, relying on my
"good" ear to make up for the deficit.

I thought that was working well. I learned to adapt to my surroundings, positioning myself in a
crowd where I could focus and function (or so I thought), or avoiding social situations altogether.
But in the last few years, actually as decades have rolled by, I realized that coping became more
difficult, social settings became more awkward, communicating with loved ones more strained,
and being in public just plain became more uncomfortable. So I tended to withdraw because
being alone was easier. I had a lot of solo hobbies, lucky me.

But I now realize (after retirement) that my part-time job as Adjunct Instructor was most affected Barbara Brown and Joe Mutter

because face-to-face interactions with students went well, but if I was addressed when my back was turned, it was as if the students were being ignored
because I did not hear their questions or comments. Thankfully, the other students and instructors in the room could gently point out to me that I was being
addressed.

My wake-up call happened gradually. The last six months, I was acutely aware of my speech and thought patterns being very affected. Conversation
became difficult at times because my thoughts did not come out in coherent sentences, and I would struggle for words, but in my mind, I knew exactly
what I wanted to say.

I was encouraged by a friend who wore hearing aids to check out the new technology. Finally, I took the initiative to ask more questions. My primary doctor
recommended Mutters Hearing Center and I made the call. And now, the story takes a wonderful turn!! On my first appointment, I was ushered back into
the world of hearing by Joe Mutter! It was an absolutely overwhelming experience to be able to hear again. And it was all done so quickly, professionally,
and effortlessly (on my part anyway). The hearing test revealed that my "good" ear was now impaired, thus providing no support for my "bad" ear. But most
importantly, because my deaf ear was not sending any "signals" to my brain, there was no reason for my brain to function effectively! cognitive decline it is
called.!! I read an article in the office that day that revealed a study how cognitive decline is normal and the result, when you don't hear. Now that is scary
information and explained in a small way what I know that I was experiencing, and how my brain function was being impaired day by day!!

From the hearing test to the computer, Joe immediately programmed my results into a pair of hearing aids that he put into my ears. The tears welled up in
my eyes as he was speaking to me in a clear, distinct and audible voice.!! The first time in more than a decade that I was able to hear, and more
importantly understand, the spoken word.

My (Important) Hearing Aid Experience
Joe ordered a pair of hearing aids programmed for my problem, and I went back to the office for another appointment. Bailee, his daughter, and assistant,
are so wonderful to work with. I am now a few months into my experience, and every day I smile a little bit bigger because my',Sense of hearing has been
restored.
I encourage everyone I know to schedule a hearing test to discover if they are living their best and most productive life. And I also highly recommend Joe
Mutter at Mutterl's Hearing Center for an experience that will leave them smiling, tool II I feel so blessed to
have made this important decision. I encourage YOU to make that call, too!! Barbara Brown 4-13-18

1 A stone-cold drama on a hot
summer evening: For a play
with blood and thunder, murder
most foul, and political intrigue,
Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” fills the
bill. This weekend (July 20-22) and
the next, A.C.T. Studio Theatre
presents “Macbeth,” The Bard’s
circa-1606 tragedy which, says
Wikipedia, “dramatizes the dam-
aging physical and psychological
effects of political ambition on
those who seek power for its own
sake.” It tells the story of a Scottish
general, Macbeth, who is given a
prophecy from three witches, that
he will be king of Scotland. Ambi-
tion and a pushy wife turn him to
the dark side, and he kills the king
and takes the throne. These things
never end well. Curtain: Fridays,
Saturdays, Sundays, 8 p.m. Tick-
ets: $25. 516-662-2903.

Hans Rosling is a Swedish medical doctor who rose to prominence when he produced J94 A832 K 10 6 5
a Ted Talk in which he promoted the use of data to explore development issues. He said,

If you know how to do something, it seems easy. But until you do, it can appear very difficult. Q7

At the bridge table, we would all play better if we had X-ray vision. In this deal, for example, Dealer: South; Vulnerable: East-West
what happens in three no-trump after West leads the diamond three?
The Bidding:
South starts with six top tricks: one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. He
should hope that East has the club king and that he can get four heart tricks. What is the SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING
best play in the heart suit? 1 Hearts Pass 1 Spades Pass

Ideally, you run the nine. Then, assuming it loses to the jack or queen, you cash the ace and 3 Diamonds
king. Your chances are just under 50 percent. Here, though, declarer’s communications are
imperfect.

The simplest-looking line is to win the first trick with dummy’s diamond king and to lead a
club toward the queen. Suppose East takes that trick and returns a diamond. South should
win that, cash the club queen, then lead a low heart from his hand. Yes, the defenders take
that trick and two diamond winners, but when hearts prove to be 3-3, declarer is home.

Note, though, that if East had shifted to the spade four at trick three, it would have defeated
the contract — not easy.
