INSIGHT BRIDGE

THE ABNORMAL IS ABNORMALLY TOUGH WEST NORTH EAST

South’s two-spade rebid promises at least a six-card suit (and in Standard, a minimum
opening). If playing two-over-one, North might continue with two no-trump, over which Dealer: South; Vulnerable: Both
South should bid three clubs. That would steer North away from three no-trump (which
would not do well if East were to lead a diamond). The Bidding:

do next?

West must be guided by his partner’s signal at trick one. Here, East should see the
advantage of a heart shift. So, East should signal with a discouraging diamond two. Then
West ought to find the heart switch.

If East plays an encouraging diamond 10, West might cash his diamond queen at
trick three. If so, East should drop the two, his lowest from a remaining odd number of
diamonds. Then West might shift to a heart; but he is more likely to continue diamonds,
influenced by that trick-one signal.

“Because the Watchman proce-

is no cutting, and no scalpels,” Dr.
Miller continued. “We take a lot of
steps prior to the insertion to make
sure it’s the right size since one size

of the appendage to make sure it will

“If there is a blood clot, we can’t in-

allows us to check the fit of the de-

of that prescreening and measuring,

say it’s 100 percent successful.

“Typically, the patient is on blood

will still take anti-coagulation for 45
days, along with a baby aspirin daily.
After 45 days we do another TEE to
ensure the device is still implanted
and fitted well and there is no flow
going into the device or any leakage.

“If all looks good, we stop the
blood thinner and advise the patient
to take a baby aspirin and medicine
called Plavix for six months. After six
months the patient can take just one
baby aspirin a day indefinitely.”

Patients can expect to spend one
night in the hospital and get a final
echocardiogram in the morning.
Then they can go home and go about
their normal lives. There are no limi-
tations to daily activities and the risk
is very minimal since the access is
through a vein and not an artery.

THE OSCARSTHE BEST OF THE BEST AT

The red carpet is well and truly back. The 94th Academy Awards ceremony
was an even more star-studded affair Sunday night in Los Angeles, and the
fashion was bigger and better than ever.

Nominees included Olivia Colman (for her leading role in “The Lost Daugh-
ter”), Jessica Chastain (for her leading role in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) and
Ariana DeBose (for her supporting role in “West Side Story”). It was a big night for
ageless style and Hollywood glamor, with sequins aplenty and many attendees
choosing to wear red and silver.
