ture which he experienced here. After scrambling around

with the lure of high school gangs, community college,

etc., Ric entered the Air Force Pararescue Corp. From that

point forward, he excelled in protecting America, mostly

concerning foreign terrorists, by achieving and serving

in several different positions, at elevated vantage points,

and within teamwork-created forces for good.

Prado’s break came on a pararescue operation where

he was spotted by CIA officers. He was recruited and

accepted into the CIA and had an outstanding, three-de-

cade-long career there, mainly in covert field operations,

but also as a high-ranking officer/director at the Langley,

Va., headquarters. As an example of the latter, when 9/11

happened, Prado was the director of operations for the

Counterterrorism Center (CTC) at the CIA. When Direc-

tor George Tenet ordered all CIA personnel to evacuate

the building due to the continuing terrorist airplane

threat, the CTC group, led by Prado, disobeyed the order

and stayed at their desks working selflessly for three days

straight to discover who was responsible for the worst

terrorist attack on American soil. Prado was a leader in

many ways at the CIA; however, he often brushed up

against superiors who were more concerned with image

and media/public relations than with Prado’s portfolio:

protecting America at whatever the cost.

Prado’s story is a good one, very well written, with lots

of detail, inside nuances and protocols, and insights into

what a covert operator actually does (although there are

many irritating, blacked-out sentences reflecting CIA

review and sensitivity). He mentions that, in literally

every depiction of the CIA to the public, in books, movies,

TV shows, etc., they get it wrong. Violence and quick re-

sults techniques are glorified, which are not what brings

In this week’s deal, how did South play in four hearts after West led the diamond five? Dealer: North; Vulnerable: East-West

North had an awkward rebid. One spade risked missing game. Two spades would have The Bidding:
promised five-plus diamonds. The flaw in two no-trump, of course, was the singleton
heart. South contemplated raising to three no-trump, but eventually chose four hearts. SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING

A spade lead would have been lethal, giving the defenders two spades and two hearts. 1 Hearts Pass 2 NT Pass LEAD:
However, West, hoping his partner was short in the suit, opened with a diamond. 4 Hearts Pass Pass Pass 5 Diamonds

South won with dummy’s king and led the heart 10, which was covered by the jack and
queen. Declarer cashed the heart ace, then paused to consider the situation.

If hearts were 3-3, another round of the suit would have worked well. But from East’s
cards, South felt strongly that the hearts were 2-4. He decided to try to score as many
trump tricks as possible. He played a diamond to the ace and led another diamond, which
was uncomfortable for East. If he had ruffed, declarer would have discarded a spade
loser. If he had thrown a club, declarer would have discarded a spade on dummy’s fourth
club. So East pitched a spade. South ruffed, played a club to the board and led another
diamond to leave East with no answer.
