The Farmers’ Almanac in 1978 claimed, “To err is human, but to really foul things up requires J54

Players who bid up must know how to play up, to make the maximum number of tricks. In
today’s deal, South pushed into six spades. How should he have planned the play after West WEST EAST
led the diamond 10 to declarer’s ace? K52
K74 3
South’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing, showing at least game-invitational 10 9 8
values and asking partner to describe his hand further. Three spades was game-forcing, KJ64 Q 10 9 8 2
promising a long suit. North liked his maximum with three aces, so control-bid four clubs.
(With an unappealing hand, he would have settled for four spades.) South used Roman Key 7632
Card Blackwood and jumped to six spades when he learned that his partner had two aces
and the spade king or three aces. 10 9 8

Things looked grim, but hoping for the best, South ran the spade queen. When it won, SOUTH
declarer realized that if trumps were 2-2, he was safe; but if West had started with three
trumps, South had to find him with exactly 3-3-3-4 distribution and the club king. Q J 10 9 8 7 6

Declarer played a heart to the ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace (bad news), 3
ruffed another heart, cashed his other two diamond tricks and exited with a spade to West’s
king. Good news — West had to lead a club away from the king. South won with his queen AKQ
and claimed his very lucky slam.

Take these steps to treat problematic diabetic foot wounds

BY TOM LLOYD Dr. Amberly Paradoa.

More than 65,000 lower limbs
are amputated annually due to
complications from diabetes including
diabetic foot ulcers, according to
the American Podiatric Medical
Association.

Even worse, a huge percentage of
those amputations could have been
avoided if diabetic patients had stuck to
their treatment plans and made at least
one visit a year to a podiatrist like Dr.

Orchid Island oceanfront condo: Bright, beautiful and turnkey

The elegantly appointed three-
bedroom, three-bath condominium
at 70 Beachside Drive #101 in Ocean
Club II at Orchid Island is ready for
owners looking for a turnkey proper-
ty – all you need to do is unpack your
bags and settle in.

Dr. Art and the Hon. Sandy
McLaughlin purchased the luxu-
rious, low-rise oceanfront condo-
minium 10 years ago as a tropical
getaway. At the time, the couple
enlisted designer Lori Andriot with
the iconic, 165-year-old design firm
Bittners, and the beautiful setting
she created along with most of the
furnishings are included in the price
of the property.

“I’m a Florida native,” shares Sandy
McLaughlin. “I was born and raised
in Palm Beach County and had some
family in Vero Beach, so I always
knew we were coming back here. We
just love Vero Beach, and we’re going
to make this our permanent home.”
