the text to 911.

In 2016, the St. Lucie County Public Safety
Division upgraded its dispatch system and
was able to add the text capability through
state funding. The State of Florida funded 10
dispatch positions that could take texts.

“We’ve known next-generation was com-
ing,” Bennett said of the newer technologies.
“It’s been talked about for some time.”

In June, the department unveiled the text-
to-911 program. Bennett said she expected
there to be some texted calls for help but
figured most people would continue to call
directly.

“Most people want the interaction,” she
said.

So how do you text for help to St. Lucie’s
911 Dispatch center? Well, open your mes-
senger and create a new text. In the “To”
field, type 911 and his “Send” - a message
should pop up telling you that your text is
being transferred to the local dispatch, pro-
vided you’re in an area that has text-to-911.

Once connected, you can then input your
location and the nature of the emergency.
Texters are encouraged to not use abbrevi-
ations, slang or other shorthand, including
emojis, as these might be misinterpreted by
dispatchers. 

A MUSICAL

Jan. 27th – Feb. 12th, 2017

Featuring: Kelly Clemenzi, Ben Earman, Kristen Whalen, Brain
Pecci, Vallery Valentine, Sara Gordon, Keith Lawson, Aiden
McDonnell, Mary Murphy and large ensemble cast.

Directed by Bryan Childs
Set in New York City in 1922, this is the story of young
Millie Dillmount from Kansas, who comes to New York
in search of a new life. Her plan to find a job as a secretary
for a wealthy man and marry him goes completely awry.
The owner of her hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the far
East, her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage and
the man she actually falls in love with doesn’t have a dime

to his name... or so he tells her.
Filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a
dragon lady of a villainess that audiences will love to hate,
Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed

evening of madcap merriment.
