South can afford one trump loser, but not two. This is a textbook suit combination. The

his queen. This avoids any guesswork.

that are hard to see, like your back or
neck, yet most of those physicians will
admit getting their patients to comply
with such a routine is not easy.
It’s here where Grichnik offers a
novel proposal: educating a range of
personal care professionals to help
spot skin cancers that might other-
wise go undetected until it is too late.
Given the proper training, he says,
hairdressers, dentists and masseuses
and others might well help detect skin
cancers at their earliest and most eas-
ily treatable stages.
“Hairdressers, he says, “can play an
important role in identifying a mela-

Dentists might be able to identify
melanoma that might occur in the
oral space.
“A masseuse might be able to iden-
tify a region of concern on the back.
Our interest would be in educating
anybody that has the ability to look at
the skin surface.”
This Harvard-educated physician
also reemphasizes basic safety
precautions we’ve heard for years,
advising people to avoid being
outdoors (or at least in direct sunlight)
at midday, use zinc or titanium-based
sun blockers, and wear loose-fitting
long-sleeved clothing when outdoors –
simple steps that can help reduce the
risk of skin cancer.
Skin cancer “begins in the
epidermis, which is made up of
three kinds of cells,” according
to the National Cancer Institute.
“Squamous cells, which are thin,
flat cells that form the top layer of
the epidermis. Beneath them are
basal cells or the round cells under
the squamous cells. Below that layer
are melanocytes; the cells that make
melanin and are found in the lower
part of the epidermis. Melanin is the
pigment that gives skin its natural
color and when exposed to the sun
or artificial light, melanocytes make
more pigment and cause the skin to
darken.”
And while “melanoma” is the type of
skin cancer most people know and fear,

Post & Vine: Good food, great venue ... what’s not to like?

On a pleasant winter night, the
kind of evening that has attracted a
bumper crowd of northerners to Vero
this winter, there is no more laid-back
spot in the Arts & Dining District for
relaxing and enjoying a drink and
some food than the open-air covered
deck of Post & Vine on 14th Avenue.
While this isn’t exactly fine dining,
the food is good! Post & Vine offers a
variety of tempting appetizers to enjoy
with a cocktail, beer or glass of wine;
salads, sandwiches or burgers if you’re
in the mood for something light; and
a short list of tasty, well-executed en-
trées for those seeking a full-dinner.
But the outdoor dining area is what
makes Post & Vine unique, and the casu-
al ambiance of the spacious covered deck
– where you see some diners in shorts
and flip-flops – is where most of Post &
Vine’s dining and drinking takes place.
There’s nothing else quite like it in Vero.

cent of leather, and which stretches
throughout the main rooms.
The living room shares a cozy,
double-sided fireplace with the ad-
joining family room, creating pleas-
ant places for conversation, curling
up with a good read, or simply relax-
ing.
The trio of French doors along the
living room’s front wall are repeated
on the east wall, offering one of the
most appealing vistas in the entire
community, with a view extending
past the long, covered porch, pool
and deck, across the lush expanse of
yard to the lake, and then on across
to the rolling fairways and endless
expanse of sky toward the sea and
the sunrise.
A feature the Kemps especially love
about their home’s lakeside location
is the abundant wildlife. They point
out herons, cranes, wood storks,
Egyptian Geese and – the avian piece
de resistance – the White Pelican.
Among the continent’s largest birds,
white pelicans are distinguished by
their habit of fishing in packs, “cor-
ralling their prey rather than diving
for it,” a process the Kemps say is fas-
cinating to watch.
Off the living room, to the north,
is the chef’s kitchen, which Kathy
