Just in case the spades were 5-0, or East had begun with a doubleton diamond and could

WOMEN MAKE UP BULK OF

Women make up bulk of weight-loss surgery patients
BY TOM LLOYD Dr. Natalee Stone.
Staff Writer
More than one-third of Americans
are obese and 5 percent or more are
morbidly obese, meaning they have
a body mass index greater than 35: a
400 percent increase since 1986. Ac-
cording to the surgeon general, obe-
sity has reached epidemic propor-
tions in the United States.
That is very bad news because
heart disease, hypertension, stroke,
type 2 diabetes, at least eight differ-
ent forms of cancer, osteoarthritis,
liver disease, gallbladder disease,
depression, respiratory disorders,
kidney disease and infertility all are
linked to obesity, according to the
Centers for Disease Control.
So what can be done? Surgery is
one option. The National Institutes
of Health has declared that “bariatric
surgery is currently the only effective
means to reverse morbid obesity.”
Men and women have similar rates
of obesity, but women are much more
likely than men to seek surgery as a
solution for obesity.

Who decided we should all take 10,000 steps a day?

The Washington Post
People who faithfully adhere to
10,000 daily steps or who scold them-
selves for not reaching that goal may
be surprised to learn that this widely
accepted target did not originate as
the result of years of scientific re-
search. Instead, it grew out of the mar-

who believed walk-

the 10,000-step goal. It’s basic math.
Tracking steps and having manage-
able goals can prompt people to do
more physical activity.
Of course, someone who is less
active may set a lower step goal. An
increase to 8,000 steps will help an
adult who was previously taking only
6,000 (fewer than 5,000 steps a day is
considered sedentary). On the other
hand, someone who already walks
10,000 steps may aim for 15,000. The
idea is to be more aware of your ac-
tivity level and increase it as needed.
But does that mean using a step
counter improves your health? Re-
search shows mixed results. Benefits
could include increased physical
activity and motivation to exercise;
reduced anxiety and better mood;
and improved glucose tolerance and
blood sugar levels. Although some
studies show step counting can help
control blood pressure levels and
reduce body weight, at least in the
short term, other have found this is
not the case.
Physicians have also noted that
while having patients count steps
can motivate them to be more active,
it can also deflate patients by under-
lining their inability to meet a daily
goal, and wind up discouraging them
from exercising at all.
And some researchers are won-
dering whether they are asking the
wrong question. Maybe they should
ask, “How many steps are too few?”
Recent studies are looking at the risks
that come from too much sedentary
behavior, especially on cardiovascu-
lar disease risk.
The bottom line is that although
10,000 steps is not a magic number,
and using a step counter doesn’t
guarantee you’ll lose weight or be-
come healthier, using a pedometer
can be part of a healthy lifestyle.
Here’s how to do it. (This informa-
tion is intended for generally healthy
adults).
First, spend a few weeks tracking
your average daily steps. Then, grad-

For a long while, a big factor in its
struggles was the restaurant’s prices. But
a couple of months ago, Cajun Cove “re-

On last week’s visit, management in-

need of more diners.
With the lower prices, that’s a bit hard
to understand because the food – from

been mighty good.

Enjoy ocean-to-river lifestyle in Palm Island Plantation home
BY SAMANTHA ROHLFING BAITA

A fine example of gracious, casu-
ally elegant British West Indies style,
the spacious, Gregory Anderson-de-
signed home at 526 Feather Palm Dr.
in the quiet, friendly ocean-to-river
community of Palm Island Planta-
tion is well suited to retirees, working
couples or young families.
The current owners, Luke and Mol-
ly Webb, are among the latter. They
love everything about their beautiful
home – the ocean-to-river lifestyle,
the sunsets, the amazing architec-
ture, the plentiful storage space, and
the many entertainment opportuni-
ties, inside and out. It will be hard to
leave, says Luke Webb, but work and
school obligations make it necessary.
The broad, brick-paver motor court
leads to the main entrance and ac-

side and the single-bay garage to the
north.

a breathtaking view of the verdant

The Webbs love to entertain and
emphasize how perfectly suited the
home is for all sorts of gatherings,
large and small. Luke Webb espe-

The kitchen is a chef’s dream and
a visual stunner, with high-end ap-
