The house at 9305 Briarcliff Terrace, in
the Briarcliff section of PGA Village, is quiet
elegance in the front and a party in the back.
Set in a beautiful neighborhood, its brick
paved drive leads to a double glass etched
entry door that opens to a foyer framed by
an archway, with tiles set on the diagonal.
There is a formal dining room (12 feet by
13 feet) and a living room (23-by-16), each
with high-end molding, window treatments
and lighting.
The family room, a generous 18-by-14, is
where you’ll probably spend most of your
time with friends and family. It’s adjacent to
the kitchen, giving you a perfect entertain-
ment area. The kitchen (12-by-11) has lots
of cabinets, granite countertops, a tumbled
stone backsplash and double sinks. There is
a breakfast nook where you’ll enjoy morn-
ing coffee, and all of these spaces have won-
derful views of the lanai pool and golf views
beyond. Kids – or adults – will come in and
out for a snack and the hosts can keep an
eye on everyone while still doing food prep.
The master suite begins with a charming
bedroom that is a spacious 16-by-14. There is
a walk-in closet and the master bath has dual
vanities and sinks, hers extended with space
for a stool. I love that, as it’s a perfect place to

The Cracker Trail ride, which began
just east of Bradenton and ended with
the parade through downtown Fort
Pierce, brings attention to Florida’s horse
and cattle heritage. Riders transport their
horses from all over the country to partic-
ipate in the annual trek and are passion-
ate about preserving the history of Flori-
da’s role in the introduction of horses and
cattle into the New World, as well as the
birth of the cattle and horse industries by
Florida’s early settlers and decedents.
Following the Civil War, early settlers
along Florida’s east coast would hunt
and round up scrub cows in the wooded
rangelands, open plains and long rivers
and streams, and herd them to the west
coast where they could be shipped to
Cuba.
They had a unique way of herding the
cattle with their 10-to-12-foot bullwhips
made of braided leather that would break
the sound barrier with a loud CRACK.
That crack could be heard for miles, so
they used them to communicate and
identify with each other like a form of
Morse code. That cracking sound earned
the Cowmen the nickname of Crackers.
The Cracker Trail was the only dry route
across the Florida as the Kissimmee Riv-
er and its floodplains blocked passage to
the north, and any chance of south pas-
sage was blocked by Lake Okeechobee
and the Everglades. After the cattle were
safely en route to Cuba, the Crackers
would ride back across the open pastures

A 10 5
Over West’s takeout double, North applied the main conclusion from the Law of Total Tricks,
jumping to four spades because he knew of a 10-card fit. Dealer: South; Vulnerable: Both
West might have led the spade ace, planning to exit with a diamond in the hope that his four The Bidding:
honor cards would all win tricks. Here, though, that would not have worked.
SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING
When West leads a low club, which card should East contribute? 1 Spades Dbl. 4 Spades All Pass
LEAD:
East is playing third hand high; his card might even win the trick. In this situation, East must 2 Clubs
play the bottom of his touching cards: the jack.
When South takes the trick with the ace, West knows his partner has the club queen. So,
when South next plays a trump, West can win and continue with a second low club to give
his partner the lead. Then, with luck, East will shift to the heart nine (the high card denying an
honor in the suit), and West will take two tricks in that suit to defeat the contract.
East should not lead to a diamond, because if West has a winner there, it isn’t going to
disappear. But a heart trick might — and will — evaporate.
Finally, if declarer ducks the first trick, East should immediately switch to the heart nine.
West’s lead marks South with the club ace, so returning that suit would be a waste of time.
