Backus and Butcher: Inspired pairing of landscape legends

of Florida. Last Friday, A.E. Backus Museum and
Gallery hosted the opening reception for the
iconic showing of the works of two famed Florida
landscape artists: Fort Pierce’s own A.E. (Bean)
Backus, with his brush, oil and canvas; and the
keeper of the Everglades, Clyde Butcher, with his
large-format black and white photography. Both
artists captured the beauty and splendor in the
wilds that still surround us.
“We saw the synergy in the two artists and
wanted to have a joint showing,” said Marshall
Adams, executive director of the A.E. Backus
Museum. “Both of them were inspired by the
raw beauty in nature and each mastered a tech-
nique to capture light at just the right moment.
Their mediums are very different, but they com-
plement each other and this collaboration cele-
brates two stewards of our environment.”
Several hundred guests packed the museum
to view the masterpieces. Backus’ vibrant colors
were a sharp contrast to Butcher’s serene black
and white photos, yet each was a true represen-
tation of nature’s own artistry. Backus captured
the natural beauty of our landscape in paintings
bursting with bold color and texture. Butcher
used his expert eye and unyielding patience to re-
cord the exquisite shadows and light in the wild.
“I painted with Bean Backus” said Jackie Brice,
who was admiring the collection with her hus-
band Herman. “I met him decades ago when
a friend of mine encouraged me to drive up
from Miami and meet him. She knew him and
thought he might be interested in my work. I
brought three paintings and when he looked
at them, he took a few minutes and then said,
‘Jackie I’d like you to come work with me.’ That
was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. For
12 years I drove once a week from Miami to Fort
Pierce to study with him. And then after moving
to Jupiter I didn’t have as far to go for my weekly
trek. He was truly the kindest, best person I have
ever known.”
The Brices brought their two original Backus
paintings to the gallery for public display. Their
love of Backus and the gallery runs deep, and
it was Jackie who painted the reproduction of
a Backus landscape on the exterior wall of the
museum.
Others were drawn to the tranquil simplicity
and perfection of Butcher’s black and white pho-
tography. Butcher, often referred to as the Ansel
Adams of the Everglades, is also deeply committed
to recording precious landscapes throughout the
world. “I met Clyde Butcher several years ago at a
book signing and had my photo taken with him”
said guest Tom Prestopnik from Port St. Lucie. “So
obviously when I heard about the joint showing of
two of my favorite artists I had to come.”
The Backus and Butcher Florida Landscape ex-
hibition will be held at the gallery through April
28. Clyde Butcher will make a special guest ap-
pearance at the gallery to sign photos and books
on Saturday, March 30, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Party on 2nd Street in downtown Fort Pierce on
Saturday. Throngs of revelers dressed in their
festive green shirts, top hats, bow ties, beads
and boas ignored the ominous black clouds
only to brighten up the day with the luck of
the Irish. The annual event, hosted by Sailfish
Brewery and 2nd Street Bistro, brought the lads,
lassies and little leprechauns out for a day of
family play. Even the pooches sported green
vests, collars and hats, and seemed to enjoy the
attention they drew.
As wee folk jumped for joy amid the sounds
of laughter and shrills in the popular bounce
house, their parents challenged friends in a
friendly game of cornhole. Crowds gathered
center stage to tap their feet and sing along
with the String Assassins, who played in the
early afternoon, followed by the Humdingers
and Rivertown Band in the evening hours. As
the day wore on and beers lessened inhibitions,
free-spirited merrymakers jammed the street
in front of the stage to dance their own version
of Irish jigs infused with some good old fashion
rock and roll.
Under the big tent, 2nd Street Bistro dished
up corned beef and Swiss cheese sandwiches,
beer-glazed brats and chicken tenders for those
who didn’t want to miss a minute of the action
outside. Inside they served traditional shep-
herd’s pie, corned beef and cabbage, and fish
and chips as St. Patrick’s Day specials. Sailfish
Brewery served some special brews including
Irish Cream Wit and Jimmy McDaniels Dry Irish
Stout. The beer was flowing heavily in the inside
bar with patrons standing several deep, and out-
side under two beer tents.
A vendor’s village offered unique, one-of-a-
kind arts and crafts from local artisans. There
was also a nice selection of T-shirts, dresses and
scarves available for purchase.
An Irish contingency from Spanish Lakes
Village found their perch on the porch of Sailfish
Brewery overlooking all the festivities on the
street. Dressed in his finest green vest, bow
tie and top hat, Dave Lazarczyk looked like a
storybook character. “My wife and I are from
Adams, Massachusetts, but we winter down
here at Spanish Lakes,” said Lazarczyk. “We love
St. Patty’s Day and this is the best place to be! A
little rain wasn’t going to stop us from drinking
green beer and eating corned beef!”

Every time you have a big fit with partner and see a single card of one suit in your hand, it’s AKQ974
potentially magical. That is the time for a splinter bid. This is typically a double jump shift, but —
when a low-level bid in a suit would be natural and game-forcing, a single jump can be a K Q J 10
splinter. AQ3
In this week’s deal, what should North rebid after his partner opens two clubs (strong, Dealer: South; Vulnerable: East-West
artificial and forcing) and rebids two spades?
The Bidding:
North has a super hand in the circumstances. He can give partner the good news by
rebidding four clubs. Now South knows that he has no club losers because he can ruff SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING

diamonds. Then North should control-bid five diamonds, and South should leap to seven K Hearts
spades. Real bridge players don’t need Blackwood!
After West leads the heart king, how should South plan the play?
Declarer must ruff his two club losers in the dummy, but he must be careful to return to hand
a safe way with either trumps or by ruffing hearts, not via the diamond suit, which carries
the unnecessary risk that one opponent is void in the suit. After ruffing West’s lead, South
cashes the spade ace and club ace, ruffs a club, overtakes the spade 10, trumps the club
queen, ruffs a heart high, draws trumps and claims.
