there is also fear about what might happen positive person “within 6 feet for more
than 15 minutes over the past 14 days.”
That set of parameters is used for con-
tact tracing by the Health Department.
But it’s doubtful the family of a vulnerable
senior would be comfortable with 14 min-
utes of COVID-19 contact, or a half-hour at
6 1/2 feet.
There may also be a requirement that
any visitor who develops COVID-19
symptoms within 48 hours of visiting re-
port that to the facility. That presumes all
visitors have the same degree of candor
and concern.
Screening questions also include asking
the visitors if they are experiencing any of
the most common symptoms of COVID:
fever, cough, loss of sense of taste or smell,
fatigue, sore throat, congestion.
Other states that allow visitors are lim-
iting the number to two people per visit,
Rivkees said. Some are keeping all visita-
tion outside, where transmission is known
to be lower, but that would prove problem-
atic in Florida’s sweltering heat.
And there would likely be strict limita-
tions on physical contact. The hugs and
kisses families are craving may be reduced
to gestures, socially distanced or from be-
hind a Plexiglas screen, and under the su-
pervision of a trained facility staff member.
Even more challenging, as the coro-
navirus continues to penetrate facilities
around the state, the guidelines would
likely include a rule that the facility be
COVID-free for 28 days prior to allowing
visitors. In recent weeks, there have typi-
cally been infections in half to two-thirds
of the county’s 25 long-term care facilities,
which house a total of 1,700 residents.
Statewide, an estimated 2 percent of
long-term care residents and 3 percent of
staff currently have COVID-19 infections,
according to Emmett Reed, president of
the Florida Health Care Association, which
represents 600 senior care facilities.
Speaking at last week’s roundtable dis-
cussion, Reed said a poll of his members
showed two overarching but opposing
concerns regarding reopening – the de-
cline in the mental and physical well-be-
ing of residents due to lack of visitation
and their fears of an outbreak.
“They’re terrified of letting COVID in the
building,” he said.

Despite his unappealing hand, North should raise spades for two reasons: It makes life harder
for the opponents and lets partner know about the eight-card or better fit. Dealer: South; Vulnerable: East-West
South apparently has only three losers: one diamond and two clubs. But he needs to establish The Bidding:
the club suit and is in danger of running out of trumps. For example, after ruffing the second
diamond, if declarer draws trumps, he has only one left. He loses a club trick, is forced to ruff SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING

Instead, South must draw only two rounds of trumps before turning to clubs. (If the defender
with the last trump can ruff the third round of clubs, the contract had no chance.) Let’s say East
wins and plays a diamond. Declarer ruffs and leads another club. West can take that trick and
play a diamond, but South can ruff it in the dummy, cross to his hand with a heart, draw West’s
last trump and claim.
That was tough. Even harder was West’s finding a low-club shift at trick two; or East’s
overtaking at trick one and shifting to the club king.

We’re here to help you make moves.
The comfort and security of being home has never been more essential than it is right now. And
even though we have to stay a few feet apart or connect behind a screen, we can still come
together to help you make your next move. Whether you’re making moves to a new job, a
new city, a new relationship or a new home, we understand how important it is to know you’re
doing the right thing. Not just the right thing for now, but also for tomorrow. If your next chapter
