Wartime dredging created NATURE

‘little green jewels’

BY KEN GRUDENS
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST

Whether camping, picnicking or climbing a tree, the spoil islands of
the Indian River Lagoon are wonderful assets to our residents. Many
of the 137 spoil islands in the Lagoon were created when the 156-
mile Intracoastal Waterway was further dredged in the early 1940s
to provide safe passage for ships when German U-Boats were lurk-
ing off the Florida coast. The “spoils” were piled adjacent to the wa-
terway for convenience. At first these muddy piles protruding above
the waterline were not looked upon favorably by residents, but they
have become little green jewels in our beloved Lagoon.

The islands are managed by the Florida Department of Environ-
mental Protection through the Spoil Island Working Group (http://
spoilislandproject.org). They offer wonderful recreation opportu-
nities and provide important habitat for wildlife, especially birds.
There are three designations of islands – Conservation, Education
and Recreation. Paddlers and motor boat enthusiasts are permit-
ted to picnic and camp on the Recreation islands, but must remove
their trash when they leave. Some of these islands have picnic ta-
bles, grills and campfire rings installed by local scout troops. The
Conservation islands are off limits to boaters, but are popular with
herons, egrets, spoonbills, and pelicans which roost or nest on these
“bird islands,” safe from predators. If you haven’t had the opportu-
nity to experience a spoil island, try it. You will be amazed by their
simplicity and tranquility.
