FINAL 2 KIDNAP, BATTERY
SUSPECTS TURN SELVES IN

BY DEBBIE CARSON | Staff Writer
[email protected]

The last two suspects wanted in a kid-
napping and battery case have turned
themselves in, the Port St. Lucie Police De-
partment said.

Arbely Arocha, 41, of Hialeah, Fla., and
Antonio Raul Diaz, 28, of Homestead, Fla.,
are being held at the St. Lucie County Jail,
charged with aggravated battery with a
deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a
deadly weapon, kidnapping and false im-
prisonment, according to authorities.

“Thank you to everyone for your help
with locating all suspects,” the agency said
in a prepared statement.

Arocha was the last to be arrested, turn-
ing himself in on Nov. 6. His co-defendant,
Diaz, turned himself in Nov. 5. Their fellow
co-defendant, Michel Abreu Ulloa, 32, of
Hialeah, Fla., was arrested the day of the
incident, having been caught in the sus-
pected get-away vehicle.

Police said Ulloa and Arocha took the
male victim to the Bank of America, locat-
ed at 1800 SW Gatlin Blvd., in a 2014 silver
Chevy Suburban, to have him withdraw an
undisclosed amount of money while Diaz
stayed behind at the house with the female
victim.

At the bank, the male victim entered and
asked employees to call 911, reporting he
had been kidnapped. Ulloa and Arocha
fled the scene. The male and female vic-
tims had been renting a house owned by
Ulloa, police said. 

1 Perhaps you caught this in-
novative, impressive group
on CBS’ new show, “World’s Best.”
And now you can see them in per-
son, on stage at Fort Pierce’s Sun-
rise Theatre this coming Friday,
Nov. 22. I’m talking about “Los
Vivancos: Born to Dance,” a show
that, raves the Sunrise, combines
“tap-dance, humor, martial arts,
musical virtuosity and aerial per-
formances” with music from the
likes of Metallica, Deep Purple
and Leonard Cohen, and in which
“flamenco, symphonic and metal
scores alternate with live musical
interpretations, an avant-garde
wardrobe design and a daring
technical production.” From Bar-
celona, Los Vivancos is a dance
company of seven brothers, cre-
ated by their dancer father, Pe-
dro Vivancos, says timeout.com.
According to the show promo,
this current work concludes a
creative trilogy for Los Vivancos,
one that includes “7 Hermanos”
and “Aeternum.” Lovers of dance
will want to be there on the 22nd.
Time: 8 p.m. Tickets: from $52.

military speakers.

Since 1985, the National Navy UTD-
SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce has opened
its doors around Veterans Day to honor
the service and sacrifice of the U.S. mil-
itary. After recognizing military from all
branches of the service, including a few

of Honor Recipients Michael Thornton,
USN (SEAL) Ret., and Britt Slabinssi, USN
(SEAL) Ret.

“Any recipient will tell you that this
medal doesn’t belong to them,” said
Slabinski. “It belongs to so many others.
This medal stands for all of us who said
‘we aren’t afraid of you, we’re going to
make it right.’ We will serve, we will sac-

our last heartbeat.”

The message of camaraderie and pa-
triotism was echoed by Keynote Speaker
RADM Kerry Metz, USN (SEAL), who grad-

(SEAL) training with Class 149 in April
1988 and served in both Naval Special
Warfare and Joint Special Operations as-
signments with multiple deployments to
Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi

This year’s muster was especially poi-
gnant as it commemorated the 75th an-
niversary of D-Day and the invasion of
Normandy. A moving re-enactment of the
WWII SEALS landing on Omaha Beach
stirred the audience with seven members
of the Naval Combat Demolition Unit
carrying a raft to the field and sharing
their personal stories of that day. All were
in their 20s or late teens. Each story was
heartbreaking and terrifying as they ver-
balized their emotions and fears on that
infamous day.

As the last patriot read his story, a group
of modern-day SEALS marched on the
field and relieved them of the duty of car-
rying the raft off the field.

Then came the dogs. The highly trained
team of Belgian Malinois military dogs
entertained the crowd by scaling ladders,

HOW DOES OPENER REBID WITHOUT A FIT? 743

By Phillip Alder - Bridge Columnist 5

A popular saying goes, “If the facts don’t fit the theory, change the facts.” AKQ

At the bridge table, if you do not have a fit with partner, in fact you try to describe your hand WEST Q J 10 9 8 7
as accurately as possible, in terms of high-card strength and distribution. 92 EAST
J9762
After North opens one club, East overcalls one spade, South makes a negative double 86543 K Q 10 8 5
(promising four hearts) and West passes, North imagines that the uncontested auction K
started one club - one heart. Then, North would have rebid two clubs to show a minimum Q 10 4
hand with six clubs. This is no different. South, with his eye on game, jumps to three no-
trump. 92

West leads the spade nine. What happens after that? A63

South can see seven tricks: two spades, two hearts and three diamonds. So he needs to SOUTH
establish dummy’s club suit, which requires losing the lead twice. This is the rule: When you
have two tricks in the suit led and two high cards to dislodge, duck the first trick. Therefore, AJ6
if East puts up the spade queen at trick one, declarer underplays his six. Then, when South
takes the second trick and leads a club, West wins but does not have a spade to lead. AK83

If East remembers this rule, he will play the spade 10 (or eight) at trick one. Then the J 10 7
contract dies. South has to win with his jack and play a club, but West takes the trick with
the king and returns his second spade, setting up East’s suit while he, East, still has the club 542
ace as an entry.
