the angel tree has cards that give donors chil-

Most of the children represented by the

Guardian ad Litem program are in foster

homes due to demonstrated or reasonably

suspected abuse, neglect or abandonment

by their parents. Some are with their families

as the state works to help them stay united

after the children have been in foster care, or

to prevent removal from happening. In de-

pendency cases there are social workers and

attorneys representing the state’s interests.

There are attorneys representing the par-

ents’ interests.

As for the guardians, “we’re just looking

out for the kids and making sure their inter-

ests are represented,” Nigro said.

Guardian ad Litem basically means a

guardian for purposes of legal proceedings.

Program volunteers visit with the children

they represent and try to ascertain what they

want and articulate it to the court for them.

That’s often hard. About 230 of the children

the 19th circuit guardians now represent are

newborns to toddlers who have little to no

ability to talk. By contrast, the program rep-

resents about 50 youths ages 16 to 18.

“They numbers generally go down as

(children) get older,” Nigro said.

“It can just be because there’s a great em-

phasis on working with the children and

keeping them with families. It’s a little easier

with older children. They are vocal.”

These are numbers volunteer Santas need

to keep in mind. “We get very little for the

toddlers and infants,” Nigro said. “We actu-

ally kind of need those gifts: early learning

and development gifts.”

‘Light and bright’ TownPark home has much to offer

BY SHELLEY KOPPEL | Columnist

Perhaps it’s a bit of whimsy, but the house
at 12074 SW Bennington Circle has a touch
of the castle about it. There is tremendous
curb appeal in the lush landscaping, but
the whimsy is in the front entrance, nestled
under an arch and a domed area of the roof
that looks as if belongs on a castle. This ar-
chitectural feature certainly adds charm
and interest to the home.

Inside, the windows and doors let in an
abundance of natural light. The rooms are
well-proportioned, with a formal dining
room measuring 15 feet, 7 inches by 10 feet,
10 inches, and a spacious (15-by-19) living
room. The living room has a wall of win-
dows and doors opening onto the preserve
and adjacent to the marvelous kitchen (12-
by-16), with upgraded, white 42-inch cabi-
netry in abundance, granite countertops,
stainless-steel appliances and a large center
island with stools. The kitchen is light and
bright and fresh, and any cook will enjoy
“working” in such a pleasant environment.
The flow of the rooms makes it ideal for en-
tertaining, as well. The tile throughout the
living area helps unify the rooms.

The master bedroom is a generous 16-by-
15-9 and is carpeted in a lovely neutral tone.
An arched bow of windows provides views

holiday cheer this Saturday, Nov.

Think cool, exciting, dynamic.
Imagine your favorite, chart-top-

with gospel, jazz, soul and Mo-

says the Sunrise, comes via the
driving force that is a Histori-

The “DRUMLine Live” promo
promises dazzling vocalists, tal-

and beautiful holiday costumes.

A WORLDWIDE ONLINE BRIDGE EVENT 3

By Phillip Alder - Bridge Columnist 765

A novel event for mixed teams was held from October 31 to November 2, 2016. Four teams A3
played online in three venues. The Bridge Base Online (BBO) team was at the Silver Cloud
Broadway Hotel in Seattle; Lavazza competed at the company’s research center in Turin, WEST A 10 8 7 5 4 2
Italy; and the Chinese Contract Bridge Association (CCBA) and Yeh played in the Beijing J742 EAST
International Convention Center. KQ3

The event consisted of a round robin of 16-board matches. The final result was Lavazza K9
83.64 victory points, CCBA 65.98, Yeh 49.59 and BBO 40.79. J82

The highlight for the BBO team was the participation of Bill Gates, who partnered Sharon 10 9 8
Osberg. Their teammates were Jill Meyers-Bob Hamman and Sheri Winestock-Fred
Gitelman. Q63

This week’s deal was one that Gates played. At his table, North-South were “happy” with SOUTH
three clubs, made with an overtrick.
K Q 10 6
But in the given auction, Meyers bid a game-invitational three clubs, and Hamman went for
game in no-trump. West led the spade two: three, ace, six. East returned the spade nine: A 10 9 4
king, four, heart five. What did Hamman do next?
KQJ5
Declarer could have gotten lucky in clubs, but knew that that was against the odds — 16.96
percent, to be precise. Instead, Hamman played a diamond to the ace and a heart to his 10. J
With hearts 3-3, West had no defense, but she surprisingly led another spade, so Hamman
immediately claimed nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club. Dealer: South; Vulnerable: North-South

That gave BBO 10 international match points against Lavazza. The Bidding:
