FOR PORT ST. LUCIE
Why should you vote for Linda Gausten? The reasons are clear.
Vote for a fresh face with fresh ideas – Linda is a proven leader with the financial skills to
make this city fiscally sound, and is not hip deep in political connections and special interest
Linda has over three decades of financial executive business experience. Although the
city is not a business, it runs on business principles. Linda’s experience, skills, and training,
are exactly what our city needs to help lower taxes, curb spending, and avoid repeating the
poor decisions that created our mountain of unnecessary debt.
Linda also has a proven track record in environmental stewardship. Her successful
efforts opposing Compost USA, a controversial compost plant that was proposed for St. Lucie
County, that would have caused pollution in our waterways, and dropped our property values,
demonstrate that she will do whatever it takes to maintain and improve our quality of life.
Linda is fortunate to have the time, focus, and commitment to devote to our city. A City
Council job in a city the size of Port St. Lucie is not about rubber stamping items at meetings
a few days a month. It requires daily dedication. Linda will always be available for residents
when they wish to have a meeting with their council member.
The voters of Port St. Lucie have a real choice on November 8th. The decision on who you
vote for in this city council race can determine the future of our city. The fiscal challenges
our City faces at this time need a business professional. Vote for the candidate who has the
qualifications to do the job – Linda Gausten.
Visit her website and learn about her solutions
to our tough problems.

The History of
Brought to you by
Once upon a time a man called Stingy Jack invited the devil to have a drink with him. Jack, who lived up
to his Moniker, did not want to spend money so he persuaded the devil to turn himself into a coin that Jack
could use to pay. The devil agreed but instead of buying the drinks Jack decided to keep the money. He put it
deep down inside his pocket beside a silver cross which kept the devil from turning back to his original form.
Eventually Jack decided to let the devil go as long as he promised not to bother Jack for one more year and if
Jack died the devil would not claim his soul. A year later Jack convinced the devil to climb a tree for a piece of
fruit, while the devil was picking the fruit Jack carved a cross in the tree bark which prevented the devil from
climbing down until the devil promised Jack that he wouldn’t bother him for 10 more years. When Jack died God
wouldn’t allow him into heaven and the devil, upset by the tricks that jack had played on him but keeping his
word not to claim his soul would not let Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning
coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved turnip and has wandered the earth with it ever since. The Irish
call this ghostly figure Jack of the lantern. Eventually it was shortened to the term that we use today Jack-O’-
Lantern. Folks in Ireland and Scotland started carving their own versions of Jack’s lanterns by
etching scary faces into turnips or potatoes and setting them near the windows and the doors
to scare away Stingy Jack and other evil spirit. When they emigrated to America the tradition
came with them. They realize that pumpkins were native to our country and that they made
perfect Jack-O’-Lanterns and that’s why we carve pumpkins to this very day.

Cruising up the circular drive at 6394 Citrus Ave.,
one of the first things you notice is the wonderful,
mature live oaks with hanging moss that surround
the 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath, 4,100-square-foot home.
It is picture-perfect – and built to last, with poured
concrete foundation and walls, and impact-resis-
tant glass in all 52 windows.
A focal point of the house is the chef’s dream
gourmet kitchen. The 18’ by 15’ room is stun-
ning. The vaulted ceiling and the wall of windows
keep it light and airy, as does the view of the trees
and the pond outside. The center island is large
enough to be used for crafts and other activities,
and there is plenty of room for family dining in the
eat-in kitchen. The room has professional-grade
appliances, a farmhouse sink, and a unique gas
stove and convection-and-steam oven set in a
brick-and-tile enclave. The microwave is set into
the island and has a warming drawer. There’s lots
of cabinet space and a pantry for additional stor-
age, as well as counter space for more than one
cook. The tile floor is unique and the owner said
that when he saw the tile, he looked no further.
“I fell in love with that tile and that was it,” the
Also downstairs are a huge family room, 24’

as the formal living room/parlor, a powder room
and a laundry room.

ONE TRICK SHORT? FIND ANOTHER WINNER WEST NORTH EAST
J84 A7632 K Q 10 9
By Phillip Alder - Bridge Columnist 732 Q J 10 86
K J 10 8 A54 Q
Alan Parsons, an English audio engineer, songwriter, musician and record producer, 965 AQ 10 8 7 4 3 2
said, “I started in a research lab for TV cameras, then I worked at a tape duplication
facility. That was the first introduction for me to recorded music and hi-fi.” SOUTH
We have duplication in bridge, not just of boards for a tournament, but in a single suit. AK954
The North-South clubs in today’s diagram have all four honors, but will take only two 97632
tricks. Duplication of this sort is often fatal to a contract, because each partner will KJ
have given his cards full value, when they are not pulling their weight.
Dealer: South; Vulnerable: East-West
This deal from Steve Conrad was declared by his regular partner, Ruth Stober of
Great Neck, New York. How did she play in four hearts after West led a trump? The Bidding:
North’s three-club rebid was fourth-suit game-forcing. Then his jump to four hearts SOUTH WEST NORTH EAST OPENING
was a slam-try, showing a stronger hand than a four-heart rebid on round two. 1 Hearts Pass 1 Spades Pass
2 Diamonds Pass 3 Clubs Pass LEAD:
South could see only nine top tricks: one spade, five hearts, one diamond and two 3 Diamonds Pass 4 Hearts All Pass 2 Hearts
clubs (that annoying duplication). The kibitzers thought she would play on diamonds
to collect an overtrick if they were 3-2. But Stober noticed that she could win 11
tricks by ruffing a very rare four times in her own hand. She won the first trick on the
board, cashed the spade ace, ruffed a spade with the heart five, played a diamond to
the ace, ruffed another spade, overtook the club jack with dummy’s queen, ruffed a
third spade, crossed to the club ace, ruffed the now-high spade seven, and had two
top trumps on the board. It was a beautiful dummy reversal.
