BY KEN GRUDENS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, INDIAN RIVER LAND TRUST Giant land crabs, sometimes called blue land crabs,
may not be giants to us, but they are the largest land
NATURE crab in Florida. An adult can weigh over a pound and
its carapace can be the size of a man’s palm. They are
easy to distinguish as one claw is considerably larger
than the other. Although they’re a prevalent species
throughout the Caribbean, the only place they live
in the United States is in Florida’s coastal estuaries,
with Indian River County the northern edge of their
range. They burrow in mud flats – and sometimes in
nearby lawns. Considered omnivores, they mainly
eat the leaves of red and white mangroves and the
buttonwood tree.

On a full moon in early fall the egg-bearing females
migrate to the ocean to release as many as 250,000
eggs each into the surf. That’s when you may notice
hundreds of crabs crossing Hwy A1A. Drivers should
be mindful of these migrating crabs – it’s difficult
enough for them to survive the journey as they are
vulnerable to predation away from their burrows.
The eggs hatch into larvae and drift in ocean cur-
rents for over a month. If lucky enough to survive,
they are washed into mangrove forests and tidal
creeks along the Lagoon. Giant land crabs can live
for 15 or more years, molting as many as 60 times
during their lifetime.

were a nice rendition of this southern

cutting off the square-shaped store
site from the rest of the parking lot,
