premier psychology practices, he started his own coaching and consulting firm. His
passion had always been coaching and teaching, “helping others to fly” and so he
became the trusted advisor to a wide range of clients in the business world as well
as all of London’s major museums. He served on the Arts Council of Great Britain.
In 1991, James met his future wife, Noel and for both, it was a game changer - love
at first sight. She moved from New York to London and they were married in 1998.
In 2004, James and Noel retired to John’s Island in Vero Beach.
James adored Florida. After gray rainy London, he took to the heat and sunshine as a
person reborn. James was a larger than life personality: charismatic, brilliant, hand-
some, gentlemanly and with an infectious cheerful enthusiasm. Whether around a
dinner table, or on the golf course or in his many emails he could be relied upon to
be topical, well informed, controversial, and not without an opinion of his own. He
became a favorite and captivating speaker at the John’s Island Book Review Presen-
tations and the Gold Series lectures. He was a natural – gracious, articulate, and with
wit and insight took his audience on an educational tour with every speech. And of
course, there was that lovely resonant voice and English accent
He had so many passions. He was a gourmet cook and a dinner invitation to
the Cooke household was a treat not only for the glorious food but also James’
engaging and probing conversation. He was very much the intellectual but with
a joyous, whimsical sense of humor. He loved to tell stories and would delight his
audience with a punch line accompanied by a wicked twinkle in his eyes. He
was just fun to be with.
He was a frustrated English gardener and persevered in our Florida heat to produce
an herb garden for his daily gourmet feasts, not always successful. He was an accom-
plished athlete all his life - tennis, rugby, cricket - and excelled at golf effortlessly
maintaining an 11 handicap despite his diminishing strength and energy.
There were always books and music in the house. James had a vast collection of
Classical CD’s and he would be found most days reading one of his newly arrived
history books while listening to his favorite Beethoven piano sonata.
James is survived by his adoring wife Noel and his son, Oliver Cooke and his wife
Natalie of London, England and his two granddaughters Nina and Maxine.
Any contributions in his memory should please be made to Gifford Youth Center.
