Colonoscopy prep not fun, but test’s benefits are quantifiable

BY STEVEN PETROW
The Washington Post

At a recent dinner, I was seated
next to a good friend’s mother, who, I
learned, was in treatment for Stage 4
colon cancer. As a cancer survivor my-
self, I felt an instant kinship with her.

After dinner, I told my friend how
much I had enjoyed chatting with her
mom. A few days later, out of the blue,
my friend confessed that neither she
nor her husband, both in their mid-
50s, have been screened for colorectal
cancer.

I felt sad, because the mother had
recently finished a tough course of
treatment; she looked weak and vul-
nerable. I was also troubled, because
regular screening for colorectal can-
cer has demonstrably saved lives. The
death rate from colorectal cancer in
2018 was 55 percent less than what
it was in 1970, thanks to more wide-
spread screening and more effective
treatments. Why would anyone not
get screened – especially my friend,
given her family history that more
than doubles her risk?

Unfortunately, my friend and her I’m a veteran, having had three

“Dealcoholized” is a regulatory term
for wine reduced to less than 0.5 per-
cent alcohol by volume. This is typically
done through a process called reverse
osmosis or by running the wine repeat-
edly through a centrifuge-like device
called a spinning cone. That’s rough
handling – not only does it remove al-
cohol, which provides body and texture
to wine, it also removes more delicate
flavor components. That’s a main rea-
son dealcoholized wines have been

Hand on Heart uses a process called
GoLo, developed by a Santa Rosa, Ca-

A single pass through the GoLo sys-

Dr. Nicholas “Nick” Anthony Coppola III

November 22, 1963 - January 14, 2022

Dr. Nicholas Coppola, 58, born November 22, 1963 in Mt. Vernon, New York, passed away
unexpectedly on January 14, 2022. Nick was a beacon of light in the community and was a
friend to all and a loving husband and father.
Vero Beach, Florida lost a tremendous individual whose kindness, generosity and love was
overflowing. Perhaps his Facebook profile says it best, “Husband and father of three beautiful
children.” This is how he would most like to be remembered – his family was his pride and joy
and the grounding force in his life. Nicholas was the loving husband of Elaine and proud father
to Melanie, Cole, and MaryGrace.
Following high school, Nick attended Nova Southeastern University where he earned a degree
in finance and ultimately achieved an MBA. Nick’s heart was always focused on helping people,
so the next logical step was to pursue a career in medicine where he felt he could truly make
a difference in the lives of others. Nick returned to Nova Southeastern where he attended
medical school and completed his advanced education. Nick’s finance background and knack
for business proved invaluable in helping him develop and grow a successful medical practice.
Beyond Nick’s many accomplishments, his greatest achievement began with his love story, when he met Elaine. Nick and his family frequented
Elaine’s family’s restaurant (it should be known that the parents were secretly hoping for a love match). It wasn’t until later that he was
introduced to Elaine through their mutual friend, Dwayne. They began dating and for three months they didn’t tell their parents to avoid any
disappointment if things didn’t work out. However, this was a love that was meant to be and resulted in three beautiful children, each with a
kind heart, strong moral compass and one that withstood great tragedy and heartache.
Throughout Nick’s life, he always had a passion and joy for music. He was a talented guitarist who loved classic rock. Nick worked as a
songwriter, lyricist, singer, and guitarist on nearly 30 songs dating back to 2010. Nick had a gift for melodies and lyrical hooks, which
compelled him to write prolifically. His wife Elaine, his son Cole, and his daughters Melanie and Mary all became the subjects of songs which
he wrote to profess the greater and deeper love he felt for them and beauty they brought to his life.
Beyond music and his family, Nick touched the lives of so many. First, as a physician, Dr. Coppola was known as a talented family doctor with a thriving
practice, yet, he knew his patients by name when they walked into his office. He took the time to know each person individually and put them at ease
with his kindness and humor. However, Dr. Coppola took a step back from practicing medicine following the tragic death of his son, Cole.
The loss of Cole brought forth the next chapter in Nick’s life, where he and his family demonstrated exceptional perseverance and resilience by
launching the Live Like Cole Foundation, focused on improving the lives of Indian River County residents by taking action and spreading kindness.
Nick spearheaded a number of impactful initiatives like The Cole Coppola Memorial Fishing Pier as well as programs that were closely aligned with
Cole’s passions like fundraisers for the Humane Society, practice uniforms for the VBHS football team, Indian River County Tax Collector tag art
program, and the support of local high schools. Perhaps of greater significance are the number of private philanthropic initiatives that Nick Coppola
and his family quietly supported, which is where the depth of Nick’s kindness, compassion, and love for others would shine through.
Nick Coppola has left a legacy for many to follow as a man, a husband, a father, a philanthropist, and a friend. We will all miss Nick, but will
remember him in a way that will inspire us to be better people.
Dr. Nicholas Coppola is preceded in death by his parents Nicholas and Marie Coppola and his son, Nicholas Coppola IV. He is survived by his
wife, Elaine Coppola (née Ciambriello); his children, Melanie and MaryGrace; his brother, Dr. Christopher Coppola; his niece and nephew,
Madeline and Christopher; his uncle, Bob Sordelet; his mother and father-in-law, Pat and Mary Lou Ciambriello; and his brother-in-law, Tino
Ciambriello and his family, as well as a vast group of loving family members and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 20 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Strunk Funeral
Home. A funeral mass will be on Friday, January 21 at 4:00 PM at St. Helen Catholic Church with

burial to follow at Crestlawn Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place on
Saturday, January 22 at the Cole Coppola Memorial Fishing Pier in Riverside Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you “Live Like Cole and Love Like Nick”, by making
a donation to the Live Like Cole Foundation or the Gifford Youth Achievement Center or simply

show someone an unsolicited and unexpected act of kindness.

‘Estuary’ pool home offers elegance in ‘Old Florida’ setting

Dr. Peter and Donna Monoson
are an adventurous couple and have
an affinity for island life. Originally
hailing from Nantucket, where Dr.
Monoson was a cardiologist at the
Nantucket Cottage Hospital, they
headed south decades ago in search
of a warmer climate. They landed in
the Caribbean, where they eventually
built their home, “Blue Moon 1,” on
the island of Nevis.

Travel restrictions after 9/11 made it
difficult for the Monosons to visit their
island escape, so they set out to find
another place to hang their sun hats
and eventually settled in Vero Beach,
in the “unique island community at
The Estuary,” where they built the
4-bedroom, 4.5-bath, 4,395-square-
foot, two-story home at 124 Estuary
Dr. and dubbed it “Blue Moon 2.”

Having been among the first to call
the Estuary “home,” the Monosons
embraced all the community had to

Construction finally underway at Ocean Club at Vero Beach

It’s the first new home construc-
tion in a development project that
was initially approved by St. Lucie
County commissioners in August
2006.

Plans call for 31 estate homes on a
43.5-acre tract west of State Road A1A
and a 13-unit oceanfront condomini-
um complex on a 2.5-acre parcel east
of the highway.

“The big news is we’ve started our
construction,” Compass real estate
agent Scott Reynolds said last week.
“We have the model under construc-
tion and in the next month we’re go-
ing to have the spec (home) in per-
mitting.

“The slab is in, and the block is go-
ing up,” added Reynolds, who is work-

has really taken off. Our team has
been working strongly in the mar-
ketplace for five years. It’s just really
taken off.”

The Reynolds Team anticipates go-
ing to contract on two estate homes
per month until the subdivision is
sold out, Reynolds said.

“I expect a good year, but I expect
a really good first quarter,” Reynolds
said. “I’ve gotten a lot of interest from
South Florida and obviously from the
northeast.”

Potential buyers are looking for
vacation homes and future fulltime
residences, Reynolds said.

North Hutchinson Island is just a
two-hour drive north of the intense
development and congestion of
South Florida, Reynolds noted.

The location is midway between
Vero and Fort Pierce, about a 15-min-
ute drive away from shopping and
dining in Vero’s Village by the Sea
and the picturesque Fort Pierce wa-
terfront and downtown area.

The construction of the condo-
minium complex on the east side
of A1A is awaiting the completion
of the permitting process, Reynolds
said.

Meanwhile, Bernstein, principal of
Ocean Club Vero Beach LLC in Stu-
art, is lining up the infrastructure
subcontractors, Reynolds said.

“The ocean side is like the gravy,”
Reynolds said. “The oceanfront stuff
just flies off the shelf.”

Real estate sales are high in a vari-
ety of prime locations throughout the
country, Reynolds said.

“Everyone is moving,” Reynolds
said. “It’s not just that Florida’s on
fire. Everyone is shuffling the deck.
Everyone has low inventory, every-
one has had prices go up, everyone
has had steep buyer demand.

“I’ve been here since 2005: I’ve nev-
er had this low of inventory,” Reyn-
olds said. “Our sales would even be
higher if we had more inventory. To-
day in our whole county, there’s only
318 homes available to buy. To put
that in perspective, there are 1,200
realtors.” 
