Recently built Ocean Ridge home beautiful inside and out

BY STEPHANIE LABAFF

Staff Writer

Jim and Carol Lewin have created a
tropical haven – and their own secret
garden – on their property in Ocean
Ridge. For years, they loved their Sum-
merplace home on the island’s north-
ern end but decided they were ready
for a new challenge. That’s when the
Lewins stumbled across the Ocean
Ridge subdivision across A1A from St.
Edward’s School, and saw the poten-
tial for a home at 133 Devonwood Way
that was recently completed by GHO
homes.

The 3-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom house
is a rare find, sitting on a half-acre lot
east of A1A.

“The original owners never really
moved in,” shares Jim, so he and Car-
ol moved into a virtually untouched
space that they then made their own,
installing frosted glass interior doors
and adding exterior doors that open
onto the lanai from the owner’s suite,
along with other changes.

Carol notes that Jim is quite astute
when it comes to home design, point-
ing out the spectacular mosaic instal-
lation just inside the foyer featuring a
pair of sea turtles in shades of ocean
blues and greens. Hints of his attention
to detail can also be seen throughout,
with everything from the epoxy floor-
ing in the garage to the Japanese-in-
spired garden.

Opposite the mosaic in the foyer, a
pair of frosted doors open into the for-
mal dining room with a butler’s pantry,
which serves as a conduit to the chef’s
kitchen. With conveniences like an in-
duction cooktop and a Smart touch-
screen refrigerator, food prep and en-
tertaining are a snap.

At the rear of the kitchen, there’s a
small dining area overlooking the pool

over a portion of a neighbor’s lot that
makes a pleasant view.

As you can imagine, we live in a very
sought-after neighborhood. Our neigh-
bor is quite elderly. We are concerned
that when our neighbor dies, the prop-
erty will be sold to someone who wants
to either expand the house or demolish
it and replace it with another. Either
scenario could spoil our view.

We would like to buy the portion of
the neighbor’s lot that frames our view.
How should we proceed?

Answer: Longtime readers of our
column know that we’re big believers
in the power of being good neighbors.

To us, that means helping out your
neighbors whenever you can. We’ve
become close with several of our
neighbors over the years, but not to the
same degree.

Not everyone is lucky enough to live
next to kind, helpful people. Which
brings us to your elderly neighbor:
What kind of relationship have you
had with them since you moved into
your beautiful neighborhood? Do you
bring over the occasional treat? Do
they participate in neighborhood ac-
tivities?

Or, have you never, ever, had a single
conversation?

If you have a warm relationship
with your neighbor, the thing to do is
walk over with a plate of something
sweet and homemade and strike up
a conversation about how lovely your
neighborhood is, and how much you
love living there.

Ask your neighbor about their fa-
vorite parts of the neighborhood. Is
there anything they miss about it (if
there was a change)? Will they stay in
the neighborhood long term or, if they
have family elsewhere, will they spend
more time away?

You should have some helpful in-
sights at this point in the conversa-
tion about what your neighbor likes
and perhaps dislikes about the neigh-
borhood, and whether they’ll stay or
go. They might ask you, “Why do you
ask?” To which you can honestly reply,
“I see us living here forever, and I’d
