“It was wonderful, all this camaraderie in
one place. It worked beautifully,” she says.

Bair became an accomplished artist,
selling her work in galleries, and exhib-

east and beyond.

Ten years later, Bair was ready for a
change, and in 2018, she and her husband
discovered Vero Beach. As with many
newcomers to Vero, she was delighted
with the cultural climate and offerings
here, including our excellent museum.

Having had her fill of the grays, browns
and tan colors of the Northeast winters,
Bair says she was delighted by Florida’s
vibrant colors.

“I need bright blue, bright turquoise
and bright orange. I need those pops of
color. [But] I simply was not prepared for
the lushness Vero’s mix of tropical and
sub-tropical climates produce. The flow-
ers are amazing. Even the birds. They can
be so dramatic, but it’s the color of the
feathers that intrigues me.”

Representational in style, Bair’s oil
paintings were as well accepted in this
new clime as they had been in the North-
east, but change was in the air.

South’s two-spade rebid promises at least a six-card suit (and in Standard, a minimum

South should bid three clubs. That would steer North away from three no-trump (which

West must be guided by his partner’s signal at trick one. Here, East should see the
advantage of a heart shift. So, East should signal with a discouraging diamond two. Then
West ought to find the heart switch.

If East plays an encouraging diamond 10, West might cash his diamond queen at

diamonds. Then West might shift to a heart; but he is more likely to continue diamonds,
influenced by that trick-one signal.
