POST COVID STRATEGIES

Covid-19's first case originated in Wuhan, China. The first case was reported in December
2019 and it comes from an animal market named Huanan. The market is said to be the first
source of the virus because they sell a lot of exotic animals such as frogs, snakes, and bats.
The genetics of coronavirus is tested and found similar to the animals there. However, there is
still no solid proof that those exotic animals are the main causes of this covid-19 virus. The virus
will start to spread worldwide in early 2020. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued
recommendations for each country to take precautions and raise awareness to cut the chain of
Covid-19 spreads. Referring to Dr. Tedros, WHO Director-General, because of this Covid-19
virus, things will never be the same anymore as they will stay for a long time. As a result, there
will be a “new normal” for everything from time to time. People will learn what they can do and
what they cannot do and eventually the do’s and the don’ts will become new nature for future
generations.

Vaccines are substances that are used to trigger the human immune system. Immunisation is
a process for human cells to protect themselves from disease and viruses. Vaccines are
introduced to the public as a step to reduce the case. However, two doses of vaccines are not
enough for people so booster shots are needed too. People are encouraged to get their booster
shots by walking to their nearest vaccine centre. Not only that, but our government has also
decided to give vaccines to children that are below 12 years old. This is to ensure the guarantee
of every citizen. A lot of types of vaccines have been developed around the world but there are
only three main vaccines that are given to Malaysian citizens which are Pfizer, AstraZeneca,
and Sinovac. Our multimedia has also done its part to encourage people to take vaccines by
advertising how vaccines work. According to Dr Noor Hisham (2022), the unvaccinated
individual has the highest risk to get infected and those who already get their booster shot are
the safest resulting in fewer new serious covid cases. Thus, people are really advised to get
their vaccine to ensure everyone’s safety.

Endemic is a phase where people are reallowed to continue their daily activity as usual like
how it used to be before this global pandemic started. However, there are still some
requirements applied in order to control the spread despite most of the citizens being
vaccinated. The government has declared to open the borders of other countries and there will
be no travel restrictions. People who want to travel are allowed to but they only need to do
self-quarantine if they have no symptoms. Not only that, business hours are back to normal,
which is from 8 am to 5 pm and people still can go out at night. Recreational places and theme
parks are reopened to the public to ensure economic growth. However, Dr. Noor Hisham (2022)
has said again, that people are still advised to wear masks during the endemic era. This is
because even though most of Malaysia has been vaccinated, there are still chances for
high-risk groups like children, the elderly, and the anti vaccines people to get infected.
Therefore, Mask is now partially compulsory for people to wear in order to protect everyone
including the healthy and the sick.

Starting from 1st April 2022, the mask mandatory for certain places and activities is lifted as
we are entering the endemic phase in Malaysia. According to Medical News Today (2015), an
endemic disease is one that is always present throughout a region or group of people and
remains fairly consistent. Since the Covid-19 virus is more controlled now, our country,
Malaysia, has been able to move to an endemic phase. Now, the SOP implementation is less
strict, one of it is, we do not need to check body temperature before entering any premises and
the premises are back to its operational hour and prayer activities are allowed without physical
distancing which now allows Malaysians to return to normal life after nearly two years of battling
the pandemic. Next, eversince the endemic phase, the quarantine mandatory is less strict as
people who contracted the Covid-19 can do self quarantine in their house and those people who
happen to be in close contact do not need to self quarantine if they have not got any symptoms.
However, the admission registration using the MySejahtera app is still mandatory at all
premises, but is exempt at open areas that are not crowded and where there are no public
gatherings. In addition, MYSJTrace is required for indoor events with a large number of guests
or visitors.

The final strategies that will be discussed are the importance of mental health. Mental health
issues are anticipated to overtake heart disease as the second most common cause of death in
Malaysians by 2020. According to a national survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, one in
every three Malaysian adults aged 16 and above (29.2%) has a mental health problem, up from
11.2 percent in 2006. Mental health problems are most common in the states of Sabah,
Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, and Sarawak. The Ministry of Health found that one in three Malaysian
adults aged 16 years and above (29.2 per cent) have a mental health condition, nearly triple
from 11.2 per cent in 2006. The states of Sabah, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak have
the highest prevalence of mental health conditions. The awareness regarding mental health is
now higher because people are more aware regarding the importance of taking care of mental
health. Students, single parents, and unmarried people are encouraged to reach out for help if
they are struggling with their mental health because they are the group of people who are
mostly struggling during these two years. There are a lot of organisations that offer professional
opinion and help, such as Aloe Mind, Malaysian Mental Health Association (MMHA) and others.
These mental health service providers offer their services for free or at a reasonable maximum
rate of RM100 or below per session. These centres are able to provide their services at a
low-cost rate because it is conducted by trainee psychologists and counsellors.

In conclusion, there are a lot of organisations that are involved and there are also people in
Malaysia who are really fighting and protecting themselves from this virus. All of us have come
up with a lot of strategies to prepare ourselves for our life in the post pandemic. In the end, all of
us are hoping for the future of endemic situations where people are better as they can live
normal lives after so long and maybe start to do things like they used to be. Finding things that
they enjoy like they used to and just having fun. In addition, we can ensure the development of
our economy as a lot of businesses and premises that have been shut down due to money
problems are reopening and because of that we are also encouraged to support small business
and local business in ensuring to help the economy.
