Presidents page Dear Members,
It gives me immense pleasure to be in contact with all members
through this issue of e-Newsletter.
At the outset, I congratulate Dr. M. R. Balachandran Nair,
Organizing Chairman; Dr. Amel Antony, Organizing Secretary; Dr.
Vardaraj V., President, IRIA Kerala state chapter; Dr. Rijo
Mathew, In Charge, National Fetal Radiology CME &Secretary,
IRIA Kerala State Chapter and Dr. Ramesh S. Shenoy, Program
Coordinator and their entire team for conducting a grand IRIA
National Fetal Radiology 2018 conference, which was held at
Kochi on 22nd and 23rd September, 2018. It was very well
attended and memorable Conference with excellent faculty.
As President of IRIA, I represented the Association in the Korean
Congress of Radiology 2018 at Seoul. The official formal
leadership meeting between IRIA and Korean Society of
Radiology (KSR) was held there and it was decided to continue
the present relationship and collaboration.
We agreed to have an Indo- Korean Symposium in India in 2019.
KSRoffered to meet all the expenses of the Faculty from Korea.
The Date, Topic and Venue will be finalized later.KSR has also
offered more training fellowships for IRIA members. They
requested us to exhibit their best Scientific Posters in IRIA Annual
meet. All the members of IRIA are offered free International
membership of KSR. They are also interested to become
international members of IRIA.
There is news circulating in various social media that Ayurveda
Medical council is planning MD Ayurveda Radiodiagnosis course
and they want PCPNDT Registration on that ground. This foolish,
unscientific, anti-people move will be resisted with all the might
IRIA and its esteemed members possess. We are also seeking
help from each and every Modern Medical Association in India
I request all the members to feel free to contact me any time
regarding association activities.

I take this opportunity to thank you for your kind support and
guidance from time to time.

It is the matter of great pleasure that Kerala state chapter
organized very successful IRIA National Fetal Radiology
2018, which was held at Kochi on 22nd and 23rd September,
2018. The academic program was excellent and Faculty from
all corners of the country delivered their talks on very
important subject Fetal Radiology. I take this opportunity to
congratulate Dr. M. R. Balachandran Nair, Organizing
Chairman; Dr.Amel Antony, Organizing Secretary; Dr.Rijo
Mathew, In Charge, National Fetal Radiology CME, Dr.
Ramesh S. Shenoy, Program Coordinator, Dr. Vardaraj V.,
President, IRIA Kerala state chapterfor organizing a very
successful Conference on Fetal Radiology at Kochi on 22nd

I request the members to apply for IRIA International Travel
Fellowship Grant for RSNA 2018 as per guidelines as
published in the June 2018 issue of the News Bulletin, if they
are attending the same. Members are also requested to apply
for IRIA National Annual Conference Fellowship Grant for
72nd Annual Conference of IRIA.

Members are advised to follow the PC & PNDT Act as it is the
law of the land.

Fetal Radiology Kochi IRIA National Fetal Radiology Conference

The first IRIA National Fetal Radiology Conference held at Kochi
on the 22nd & 23rd of September 2018, was a landmark event in
terms of participation, distinguished faculty, live workshops and
galaxy of National leaders. More than 450 delegates registered
for the two day conference. The wealth of accomplished faculty
in Fetal Radiology was a real eye opener .
The 1st day program comprised of dedicated workshops
interspersed with didactic lectures often in tandem. Dr S Pradeep
from Bengaluru lead the morning workshops & the delegates got
a real time feel of NT Scanning as well as 1st & 2nd trimester
scanning . Being an interactive session there was ample time for
the delegates to clear their doubts and apprehensions. Dr
Sunitha Pradeep from JIPMER Pondicherry gave a lucid
presentation on complications of Early pregnancy. Later Dr.
Pradeep went on to a discussion on calculation of risk
assessment & spectrum of Aneuploidy cases with FISH &
Karyotype reports – the delegates were given a clear idea on
how to proceed in risk assessment and also interpreting FISH &
Karyotype reports. Dr Pradeep also made a fervent appeal to the
delegates to transform themselves into fetal Radiologists,
instead of just churning out Biometry and anomaly reports

Dr. Rijo Mathew, the National Co ordinator for Fetal Radiology
explained how he had pioneered the concept of Targeted
Imaging for Fetal Anomaly (TIFFA ) scans a decade back. With
the recent advances in understanding of Feto maternal
environment he urged the delegates to move on from Anomaly
detection to detecting anormalities. Fetal anomalies is just a part
of the spectrum of abnormalities & one has to take into
consideration the Fetal growth, Placenta, Fetal environment &
maternal factors

Dr P K Srivastava from Lucknow brought in his considerable
experience and expertise in the workshop on 2nd & 3rd
trimester scanning. Targeted Neurosonogram by Dr Neelam
Jain from Jamshedpur, Fetal Chest & Abdominal Radiology by
Dr Sunitha Maddula from Hyderabad & Fetal MSK – approach to
Skeletal Dysplasia by Dr K. Saneej from Calicut , were not only

Fetal Radiology Kochi expressed commitment to take it forward . Dr Rijo Mathew
presented a road map for the advancement of fetal radiology &
announced formation of special interest groups. Dr Mohanan in
his inaugural address stressed the importance of USG in
Radiology curriculum and quoted the example of KUHAS (Kerala
University of Health & Allied Sciences ) where Radiology
candidates are given a fetal Ultrasound case for exams . National
IRIA has already written to MCI & National Board to make this
mandatory for Radiology examinations. He also announced that a
major National level Ultrasound conference would be held from
the coming year. Regarding the proposal from Ayurveda council
to start MD Chaya evum Vikiran Vigyan (equivalent of MD Radio
Diagnosis), he declared that IRIA would fight this move tooth &
nail along with other organizations. He urged the members to
utilize the program for skill enhancement in various sub
specialities. Dr Hemant Patel announced Sono Summit a national
conclave of Ultrasound to be held at Chennai Trade Centre from
27th to 30th June 2019 and it is proposed as a National event to
be held in the month of June every Year. Life Time Achievement
award winner, Past National President & Doyen of Indian
Radiology Dr Harshad Shah was introduced to the gathering by
Dr Rijo Mathew. Dr Amel Antony presented a memento to Dr
Harshad Shah and Dr Mohanan & Dr Balachandran Nair
honoured him with the traditional ’Ponnaada’. In his acceptance
speech Dr Harshad Shah thanked the gathering for their kind
gesture. He along with Dr Hemant Patel handed over a cheque
for Rs.100000/- for Chief Ministers Disaster Management Fund to
Vice President of Kerala Chapter Dr Josey Varghese in the
presence of National President Dr K Mohanan. Dr C Amarnath &
Dr Bhupendra Ahuja offered felicitations.The presence of past
President Dr Kulasekharan & Past Joint Secretary of IRIA, Dr
Pragati Sinha added glitter to the function. Dr Amel Antony
proposed the vote of thanks .

Dr Praveen Nirmalan spoke about the need for India specific
research in fetal Radiology .Dr Rijo Mathew got people thinking
with his elaboration of FIRADS. Ultrasound meets MRI – Fetal
Brain by Nitin Ghonge was well received and the delegates were

Fetal Radiology Kochi convinced of the role of MRI as a problem solving tool. The
nitty gritty of genetic counselling was explained by Dr Pradeep
along with the importance of studying abortus. Dr Bhupendra
Ahuja presented non cardiac lesions of Fetal Thorax. Multiple
pregnancy & its implications was dealt in a lucid manner by Dr
Yuvabalakumaran. Fetal interventions and Therapy by Dr
Bhavaharan was an eye opener and many a delegate evinced
interest to pursue fetal interventions .

The concluding session had presentations on fetal radiology
meets MRI – body applications by Dr. Nitin Ghonge and Fetal
Radiology meets Pediatric Radiology – case based scenarios
as panel discussion . The multidisciplinary approach to fetal
radiology was evident in the lively discussions that followed

The First National Fetal Radiology Conference was a grand
success by the sheer number of registration the discovery of
many committed faculty and the high academic standards .It
also stressed the theme Radiology for Radiologists. Fetal
Radiology is the domain of Radiologists & with proper training
and continuing education programs, Radiologists can reclaim
the terrain which rightly belongs to them. At the end of the
conference the delegates were empowered with vital knowledge
to be leaders in fetal radiology and they were appreciative of the
encouragement and support by IRIA & ICRI. Even more
important was the spirit of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn
further, which this conference generated,
Leaving us convinced that the future of Fetal Radiology is safe
in the hands of young Radiologists

Tamilnadu & Pondicherry Chapter AUGUST MONTH ACTIVITIES OF TAMIL NADU &
PONDICHERRY CHAPTER OF IRIA

The seventh monthly meeting of the Tamil Nadu &
Pondicherry chapter of the IRIA was successfully hosted by
the Madurai subchapter on 19-08-2018. More than 70
Members attended the meeting, including residents and
consultants. The theme of the CME was ’GI Imaging &
Interventions'.

The Invited Lectures covered All fetal to adult GI Pathologies,
both Imaging & Interventions, especially Endoscopic
Ultrasound & Interventions. The Lectures were delivered by
Dr.A.Jeyaraman, Dr.Nancy ,Dr.Jaishree ,
Dr.Shanmugajayanth, Dr.Karunakaran and
Dr.T.Mukuntharajan, and was well-received by the Audience.

During the Inauguration, DrS.Alagappan (Secretary , Madurai
sub-chapter) welcomed the gathering. Dr S. Shanmugam
(president TNPY IRIA), Dr. D. Ramesh (secretary TNPY
IRIA)andDr.RKanagasabai (Member, Central Council) were
felicitated by the Madurai subchapter Office bearers . Senior
members of Madurai sub-chapter Dr.S.Manohar,
Dr.MythiliChinnaraj, Dr. S. Chandrakumari, Dr.A.Pandian,
Dr.S.Rajamohan,
Dr.A.Chinnadurai Abdullah and Senior most ( 82 YEARS)
Practicing Radiologist in the State, Dr.S.Slater, were
honoured with Lifetime Achievement awards in due
recognition of their tireless service to the community and the
medical fraternity. Our LEGAL Counsel in the PCPNDT Case
of 2018, Advocate Mr.B.Saravanan B.A.B.L. was a Special
Invitee and he spoke at Length on SMTR 2014 & the current
legal status, especially about the Stay on 550 MBBS
Candidates getting Registered through a CBT. He was
felicitated by the office bearers for his services to the
association.

Tamilnadu & Pondicherry Chapter Dr Joe Pradhip (Treasurer) & other Madurai subchapter office
bearers actively participated in the deliberations. Vote of
Thanks was conveyed by Dr.R.Ganesh.

The residents then came forward with their case
presentations, and after intense and insightful questioning
from the judges Dr.S.Alagappan ,Prof.R.Kanagasabai& Prof.
Krishnakumar selected the best three presentations for cash
awards from the state IRIA.

Second Prize -Dr.AlkaMeena "Role of interventional radiology
in median arcuate ligament syndrome" Meenakshi Mission
Hospital & Research Centre ,Madurai
Third Prize - Dr. Vanmathi"Unknown manifestation of common
condition" Madurai Medical College
Rest of the residents presentations were awarded a certificate
of Merit and included-
Dr. S. Shanmugapriya "Green hot belly" , Madurai Medical
College
Dr. T Dhanalakshmi "Deceptive imaging" BIR MMC
Dr. S. Rohini "Uncommon external opening- deep channel
journey to the interior" BIR MMC
Dr. Rose Varghese George "le ovaire noir" CMC Vellore.

All participants expressed satisfaction about the Choice of
Lectures and the Insightful Presentations by PG students. And
were delighted that Senior luminaries of the Subchapter were
honoured by the State in a thoughtful gesture, as never
before.

The State Office thanked the Senior members of the region,
Consultants, and postgraduates of MMHRC and the event
sponsor Cook India Pvt Ltd. for a successful Academic Event
well conducted by Madurai subchapter Office Bearers and Dr.
Ganesh Rajagopal.

Tamilnadu & Pondicherry Chapter Effecting the change of new Auditor of TNPY IRIA M/s Kruba&
co was handed over bank statements with financial
transactions details during April 2017-March 2018 of
allsubchapter, committee, conferences &state accounts
operated on TNPY IRIA PAN for auditing after due members
circulation by Dr.Bhawna Treasurer TNPY IRIA.
TNPY IRIA Election process at subchapter and state levels
were initiated as per constitution during the month of AUGUST
with updating of member dataparticulars on mobile no and
email.

Delhi Chapter Interventional Radiology CME was Organized on 19 August
2018 at Vivanta by Taj, Dwarka, Delhi. The highlight of the CME
was Pre and Post CME Evaluation, Oral Paper and Poster
Competition; Guest Lectures covering entire spectrum of
Interventional Radiology; Workshops on Image guided Biopsy,
Drainage Procedures, TACE and Varicose Veins by the Eminent
Faculty from Delhi and NCR. Dr MC Uthappa was Guest Faculty
from Bangalore in this CME. This CME was attended by 245
delegates. Dr Prakash Lalchandani, President Delhi IRIA; Dr
M.K Mittal, President Elect Delhi IRIA; Dr Lalendra Upreti,
Immediate Past President Delhi IRIA; Dr Pankaj Sharma,
Secretary Delhi IRIA and Dr Atin Kumar, Treasurer Delhi IRIA
were the dignitaries on stage during Inauguration function. All
Past Presidents of Delhi State Chapter of IRIA who were
present in audience : Dr OP Bansal , Dr (Brig) Chander Mohan,
Dr Sunil Kakkar, Dr Sudhir Gupta, Dr UC Garga and Dr BB
Thukral were felicitated with bouquet by President, Delhi State
Chapter of IRIA : Dr Prakash Lalchandani. Dr Prakash
Lalchandani, President, Delhi State Chapter of IRIA welcomed
all Delegates and launched brochure of Ultravision 2018. Dr
Arpit Taunk won first prize in Oral paper presentation. Other
Oral paper paper presenters were Dr Gaurav Gangwani and Dr
Lakshmi Kumar Chalmara. Dr Krishna Sirvi won Poster
Competition. Other Poster presenters were Dr Mohit Tayal, Dr
Kavish K Chaurasia, Dr Rajchandra Singh Kharayat, Dr Akhil
Monga and Dr Varun Chaudhary. Winners of Paper and Poster
Competition were felicitated by Dr Lalendra Upreti and Dr Atin
Kumar. Most delegates appreciated Scientific Content of
Interventional Radiology CME, which was designed and
conceptualised in consultation with Convener : Dr (Brig)
Chander Mohan & Subject Experts : Dr S.S Baijjal and Dr Arun
Gupta. Vote of thanks was given by Dr Pankaj Sharma,
Secretary, Delhi State Chapter of IRIA.

Gujarat Chapter Mid Term State Conference of Indian Radiological and
Imaging Association, Gujarat State Chapter was held on
18th& 19th August 2018 at the Hummingbird Resort,
Achalgarh on Hill Station Mount Abu in the pleasant rainy
season by the North Gujarat Radiology Association (NGRA)
alongwith Gujarat State Chapter of Indian Radiological and
Imaging Association [R.I.A., Gujarat Chapter]. Dr. Harshad R
Shah, Dr. Y. T. Patel and Dr. R.C. Shah were the patrons of
the conference.

After the inauguration and lamp lighting; Dr. Mihir Pandya,
President of North Gujarat Radiological Association &
Organising Chairman andDr. Kalpesh Shah, President of
Gujarat State Chapter of IRIA had welcomed the dignitaries
and delegates.

Dr Ankur Shah, Dr Nipa Patidar, Dr. Mona Shastri, Dr.
Asutosh Dave, Dr. Deepak Mehta, Dr. Hemant Patel and Dr
Mrugesh Doctor were the faculty from the Gujarat State. Dr
Nafisa Batta and Dr Diksha Rastogi – Both from New Delhi,
were the national faculties; who have conducted Ultrasound
workshops on “Musculoskeletal Ultrasound” and “Liver and
Bowel Ultrasound” respectively with Dr. Hariram Jat and Dr.
Paresh Gupta being Ultrasound Workshop coordinators.

This mid-annual conference was attended by 170 delegates;
who have appreciated the scientific programme and
ultrasound workshops. All delegates had enjoyed the
pleasant rainy weather of Mount Abu with delicious food &
beverage. The Musical DJ night on 18th August was the icing
of cake with delegates dancing on melodious music almost till
midnight.

Gujarat Chapter Dr. Deepak Mehta, Secretary of Gujarat State Chapter of
IRIA had given vote of thanks. Gujarat State Council Meeting
was held on 19th August 2019 afternoon.

Organising committee thank all guest faculties for sparing
their time and sharing their knowledge and experience as
well as all the trade companies for their sponsorship. We
appreciate the MCon event management and Humming Bird
Resort management for their excellent services.
