Geopark Project announces plans to connect those with disabilities to the Burren
The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark has announced plans to develop improved access to and engagement with the
world-famous landscape for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. A Geopark spokesperson said feedback
from a pilot project will be used to identify locations that can be easily accessed by people with disabilities, as well as to
develop itineraries and programmes tailored specifically for small groups who wish to engage with the locations as
learning spaces. The feedback will also guide the development of suitable training for local tour guides and teachers

BURRENBEO TRUST NEWS & UPDATES

BURREN EVENTS MARCH 2014

Monthly Walks: The August Burrenbeo Trust walk will be ‘August at the
Lough’ with Harry Jeuken on the 3rd August at 2.15pm meeting at Gortlecka
Cross. Join us for a ramble in the Burren along the Lough Avalla loop walk and
catch the last of the summer blossoms. Harry Jeuken is the landowner at Lough
Avalla and has a wealth of knowledge of the holy wells, the winterage, and the
story of the local land. Harry and his family are certified organic farmers and also
farm biodynamically. Amongst other things Harry's family make cheese from
their own goat herd. The walk will take us on a tour of the land farmed by Harry
and his family taking a look at the archaeology, geology, botany, history and
agriculture of the area. While not strenuous, this can be challenging terrain - walking on limestone pavement which can be
slippery when wet. The walk will take c. 2 ½ - 3 hours and will be followed by an optional trip to the farmhouse for tea and
cake (for an extra donation - €5 suggested). Due to presence of livestock on the land no dogs are allowed on the walk.
Meeting time of 2.15pm at Gortlecka Cross or you can take the 2pm NPWS bus from Corofin and meet us there. This walk is
open to everyone. However, it is free for Burrenbeo Trust Members and a donation of €5 is suggested from non-members.
Please bring good walking shoes and waterproofs if needed. For more information please email [email protected] or
phone 091 638096. Huge thank you to David Drew for leading the July Walk. (Photo by Linda Morrison).

In light of walk numbers reaching capacity and to raise much needed funds for our expanding programmes, from September
the Burrenbeo Trust will be raising the suggest donation for walks to €10/€5 for
concession and free for members.

Education:
The Burren as a Learning Landscape continues to advance, and July was a great
month for bringing this concept to light in the Burren. We started with our Teacher
Training course which saw teachers nationally explore how they might use place
based learning in the classroom. The teachers were given plenty of skills and ideas
which they can put into practise in the new school year. Thanks to all the trainers for
their great work, especially Patrick McCormack and Brendan Dunford who donated
their time.

The 2014 Learning Landscape Symposium was also a wonderful success – with an amazing mixture of talks, workshops,
fieldtrips, active conservation work and the most essential element of all –
positive, enthusiastic delegates. A special thanks to all who helped with this
year’s event – all the amazing workshop leaders, the staff and volunteers,
delegates, supporters (particularly the Heritage Council) and community hosts.
If you would like to see the feedback report from the event go here.

We are in the final throes of selecting a candidate for the Young Burren
Leader Scholarship. Three talented young conservationists have been
shortlisted and they will be interviewed this week. The lucky finalist will get
the opportunity to attend the world’s biggest conservation conference in
Sydney—the IUCN World Congress in November.

This month, as well as our first Burren Hedge School (see pg1) we would also like to hear from schools that are interested in
taking part in Ecobeo or Áitbheo for the next school year. Get in touch with Áine on [email protected]. For
any schools that would like to have Burrenbeo visit for a Heritage in Schools talk or go out on a Burren Field Trip – the booking
system with the Heritage Council will be closing for bookings for 2014 at the end of September so get that date in your diaries
fast and treat your students to a great learning and fun experience.

If you know of any local businesses (or even those further afield) that would like to invest in the future of the Burren and Place

Based Learning in Ireland – get them to get in touch about how
they could sponsor a local school or provide scholarships for
Ecobeo schools.
Conservation:
A brand new, exciting project has arisen for the Burren
Conservation Volunteers (BCV) working with Kate McAney of the
St Vincent's Wildlife Trust, to help maintain the area around an
incredibly important bat maternity roost just outside of Ruan. Help
is desperately needed to clear vegetation and to rediscover a
boundary wall to see if it needs repairing (and to do so if it does!).
There is also a strong likelihood that the BCV will be asked to come
along and assist on a bat emergence count from this roost when the parent bats are ready to leave with their
offspring! The first stage of vegetation clearing around the roost will take place on Sat 9th Aug. There is no
limit on places but please email [email protected] if you are interested in coming for more
information on the meeting point, etc. (Photo by Sinead Biggane)

Also to look forward to is the annual BCV BBQ which will be taking place hopefully sometime at the end of
August or early September near Fanore. It is hoped that this will coincide with a coastal clean up beforehand to
make sure we have a really good appetite for the BBQ! This event will be totally family friendly so it will be a
great chance to bring everyone along to have a fun day out with the BCV. To receive more information email
Kate on [email protected].

Finally, this year our Walk with a Difference will be on Wednesday 27th August in Carron. Would you be available
to help for an hour or so during the event - either giving a short presentation or helping during the walk itself?
The event will start with presentations on various Burren topics at
about 11.30 and then after a picnic lunch head out for the walk. Again,
just drop Kate on email on [email protected] if you want
more information.

Organisation: A new home for Burrenbeo Trust
Due to our ever increasing work programme and different needs, the
Burrenbeo Trust have decamped but not far.... we are still in Kinvara at
our new address Glebe House, Glebe Road, Kinvara, Co.Galway - just
down past the side of the Merriman Hotel... in the stone building with
the blue door opposite the Garda station. Come visit us! Thanks to our
volunteers Ritchie Jones, Ide Deloughry, Mary Howard, Cathy Seale,
Elaine Williams, John Duncan, and Paula McHale who helped us move the 10 years of ‘stuff’ we’ve managed to
accumulate!
