Text and Media Connections
“Strategic reading allows students to monitor their own thinking and make
connections between texts and their own experiences. Students who make
connections while reading are better able to understand the text they are reading. It is
important for students to draw on their prior knowledge and experiences to connect
with the text. Students are thinking when they and connecting, which makes them
more engaged in the reading experience.”

Music Connection:
“Beautiful”
I think that the author related this song to Summer
because it’s like Summer is telling August that he is
beautiful no matter what the other kids say. Summer
doesn’t want August to think he’s a terrible person or
ugly. She wants August to know he’s beautiful inside, not
ugly.
