A Message from the Executive Officer

Dear HBRA Members,

November 2015 | HBRA of Fairfield County |5

November General Membership Meeting

It was a jam packed night at the Tile America/TORRCO
showroom in Fairfield. Over 90 HBRA members and
guests attended the meeting as well as HBRA CT
President, Nort Wheeler.
Thanks to Brian Knies and Sheri Snellman from Tile
America, and Dawn Corbo and Carol Kreshpan from
TORRCO for sponsoring the meeting. Thanks also
goes out to the DiMatteo Group for sponsoring the
last installment of the Membership Raffle.
Highlights of the evening was the “Passport Raffle”
sponsored by Tile America and TORRCO, the 50/50
raffle benefitting the Building Hope Foundation and
the FINAL Drawing for the Membership Raffle. The Membership Raffle was originated by the Membership

Committee to increase attendance at the general meetings. Each
month one name was drawn from all of the HBRA of Fairfield County
active members for a chance to win the jackpot that started at $250.
The requirement was you had to be in attendance at the meeting. If
the winner was not present, $250 was added to the pot for the next
meeting. Over the months, names drawn did not produce a winner. It
was decided that at the November meeting, being the last general
meeting of 2015, we would have a winner - even if it meant a second
chance drawing. Peter Gaboriault, President of the HBRA Board pulled
the first name from the raffle drum and lucky for Read Smith from First
Niagara Risk Management, he was there! Congratulations to Read and
to Jon Small, the winner of the 50/50 raffle!

The Building Hope Foundation

A New Ramp for the Torres Family of Bridgeport

Onix and his brother John, live with their mother Wilma Torres
in a two story home near St. Vincent’s Hospital. After living in
her former home for nearly 10 years they were forced to move
to another location. Both young men have Cerebral Palsy, a
disorder in the brain that affects the control of movement,
posture, and balance. It is the one of the most common
movement disorders found in children. At their new residence
there was insufficient means of access in and out of the home.
After speaking with the family and seeing the challenges their
current temporary ramp brings to them, the Building Hope
Foundation Board worked with architects, suppliers, and
contractors to come up with plans for construction of a new ramp
and walkway for easier access in and out of the their home.
Thanks to Interstate+Lakeland Lumber for donating the
materials, VASE Management and A Preferred Roofing and Contracting for their assistance in the
build, and Needs Clearing House, Inc. and Disability Resource Network, Inc. for bringing this project
to our foundation. Special thanks to Senator Richard Blumenthal for attending the unveiling and his
work with the disabled.
