A Youth of Seeking Spirit, Discovery, Challenge, and Solidarity
2 |Nov:2018
A youth of passionate seeking spirit is found in the Soka Gakkai.
As a young man, Shakyamuni set forth on a great journey to seek the solution to the fundamental sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death. The youth of Soka have proudly inherited that immense passion that is the starting point of Buddhism.
A youth brimming with the great joy of discovery is found in the Soka Gakkai.
The Lotus Sutra contains the Parable of the Jewel in the Robe. A wealthy man concerned about his impoverished friend sews a priceless jewel into the lining of the latter’s robe while he is sleeping. When the poor man wakes up, he is unaware of the jewel hidden in his robe and continues his wandering life of poverty. Some time later, the two men are reunited and the wealthy man tells his friend about the jewel he had sewn into the lining of his robe. The poor man is overjoyed at this discovery.
Discussing the profound significance of this parable, Nichiren Daishonin says:

Becoming “bluer than the indigo” means challenging ourselves with courage. It is the courageous challenge to keep breaking through our limitations and creating new value in our lives and in society. It is a demanding, difficult undertaking, but it will lead to a wonderful drama of human revolution, brimming with limitless fulfillment and growth.

A youth of solidarity that can change the world is found in the Soka Gakkai.
Shin’ichi Yamamoto—the protagonist of The New Human Revolution—met his mentor at the age of 19 and from then on strove to fulfil his vow for kosen-rufu. Our noble young Bodhisattvas of the Earth around the world—not least the members of the Soka Group, Gajokai, Young Men Division Academy, and Byakuren Group (these are the behind-the-scene youth division training groups)—have inherited this vow. Their solidarity is the hope of the 21st century.
Please dynamically construct a youth of happiness and brilliant achievement that will inspire young people of all future generations.
May your youth radiate

conviction in faith that I have become who I am today.
I was introduced to Nichiren Buddhism by a colleague in 1980. I was so deeply moved by the members’ testimonies at a four-division discussion meeting that I started chanting daimoku—Nam-myoho- renge-kyo. I was then staying with my mother-in-law who was a staunch believer of a deep-rooted traditional religious practice passed down through the generations.
In the 1980s, the government introduced the “two-child” policy. Though I had the Intra-uterine device (IUD) inserted for birth control, I became pregnant with my third child. Unwilling to harm a life, I chanted with strong determinations and at the same time, brought forth the courage to ask my mother-in-law for her blessings to enshrine the Gohonzon. In October 1984, I finally enshrined the Gohonzon and in February 1985, had a smooth delivery of my healthy third son.
In 1986, my husband started chanting when he was faced with difficulties in his career. Through seeing actual proof, with a heart filled with gratitude, he became very active in Gakkai activities, and took up the kosen-rufu mission of being a district leader. In 1988, both of us participated happily in our first National Day Parade performance. On the evening of July 21, my husband called to say that he would pick me up from work. However, after waiting for more than an hour and a half, there was no sign of him and I returned home on my own. At 12 midnight, three police men came to my place and informed me that my husband had passed away in the hospital. They wanted me to identify the body! The doctor on duty told me that my husband had taken a cab to the Accident

and Emergency unit on his own, but as he walked towards the registration counter, he collapsed. His whole body had turned black and he was diagnosed to have died due to a lack of oxygen. My husband had asthma from young, but since he started this faith practice, his asthma had never relapsed. Unfortunately, he had an asthma attack that night. That year, he was only 39.
Turning Grief into Strength and Mission
He left me with three young boys aged three, five and seven and an elderly mother- in-law. I became the breadwinner for our family of five with my meagre salary of $1,000. After the loss of her beloved son, my mother-in-law lapsed into depression, but she refused to see a doctor. I chanted to the Gohonzon keeping in mind that “all prayers will be answered and results manifested with reason”. I was determined to transform my karma, practise earnestly and carry out my human revolution to rear my children well and take good care of my mother-in-law. I turned grief into strength and decided to carry on my husband’s mission for kosen-rufu as a district leader.
With the passing of my husband, I considered getting a part-time job to earn more to start saving for my children’s education. My seniors-in-faith encouraged me to think carefully about the implications involved, namely forgoing time spent with my children and wearing out my health. Instead, they suggested striving for kosen-rufu to accumulate good fortune. With that, I followed my seniors on home visits, chanted with members who were challenging problems and went around sharing Buddhism with others.

Every day, I worked earnestly and diligently. I would rush home after work to prepare dinner and leave to attend Gakkai activities, with my youngest son in tow. Basing my life on faith, practice and study, rain or shine, I would attend every single Soka activity. My mother-in-law helped to babysit my youngest son and take him to and from school. As a result, she made new friends with similar interests. About a year later, without realising, my mother- in-law recovered from her depression miraculously. I was deeply grateful for this benefit.
At work, I actualised second Soka Gakkai president Mr Toda’s guidance, “In faith, do the work of one. In work, do the work of three.” As I continued to work diligently, my salary increased over time and our financial situation improved. At that time, my old house which was used for four-division discussion meetings, was a three-room flat on the 4th floor. As there were no lifts, elderly members would have to climb up the stairs and it could be very tiring for them. As my children were also growing up, I thought it was time to change to a bigger place. I spent just $10 to apply to the Housing Development Board for a brand new four-room Type A flat near my old place. I was truly elated when I got the flat, it had a lift to every floor! All prayers for the sake of kosen-rufu will surely be answered!
Some issues cropped up when we were applying for our new flat. I thought I could use the money from the sale of the old flat for my children’s education. I was shocked when my mother-in-law took all the money to hold with her younger son, leaving nothing for my children. I confronted her and in a fit of anger, refused to acknowledge her anymore

and disregarded her presence completely. Every day, the sight of her filled me with anger and hatred. My life plunged into hell. I was really miserable.
Subsequently, a leader in faith shared with me the Gosho “The Three Kinds of Treasures”: “More valuable than treasures in a storehouse are the treasures of the body, and the treasures of the heart are the most valuable of all.” Explaining the importance of accumulating the “treasures of the heart”, he told me not to focus too much on worrying about the children’s education fund, rely on faith and have the confidence that everything will move in the right direction. He quoted another gosho passage: “Winter always turns to spring”, and said that my mother-in-law must have her reasons for her behaviour. I chanted earnestly to the Gohonzon and reflected. After much struggle, I was finally able to make up with my mother-in-law.
30 years has passed since my husband’s passing. My three children have all grown up well, graduated from the universities and married. I am also a grandmother now.
Break Through
Back then, I was greatly troubled that my three children had yet to take up faith. In 2006, during the SGI training course, in a dialogue session with the then SGI Women Leader Mrs Asano, I shared my concern about my children not practising faith, especially with me being a leader and encouraging others to take faith. Mrs Asano shared her experience of being the only one in the family who was not practising faith. She said that she finally took faith because her family did not give up on her and persevered with

earnest prayers for her. She reminded me that everyone has a mission, including children. The later that one takes faith, the greater is that person’s mission. She urged me to persevere with daimoku, no matter what, and do my human revolution. That instant, my niggling worries vanished. From that day onwards, I reaffirmed my conviction to persevere with earnest prayers that my children who have formed a connection with Nichiren Buddhism will surely come to take faith and awaken to their mission.
Two years later, the seeds of Buddhism sprouted. My second son had a relationship problem which made him fall into deep sadness and he was immersed in suffering. I encouraged him continuously to chant daimoku so he could manifest wisdom to break through his own innate fundamental darkness. I also put copies of the organ magazine, the Creative Life, in his army bag and referred to the testimonies in them for him to read up. Around that time, through reading Creative Life, I found that his Boys and Girls IC’s husband was appointed as the Young Men Division (YMD) chapter leader in the zone. I quickly shared this with
Linda Goh (second row, extreme right) and the members of our SSA Welfare group in the 2018 NDP.

my son and arranged for them to meet. Through that YMD’s efforts at introducing him to Student Division (SD) activities, he gradually started chanting and finally overcame his own problems. He became serious in faith practice and participated actively in the SD. Now he shoulders leadership responsibilities in Gakkai.
In January 2017, my youngest son was diagnosed with stage four lymphatic cancer and a 15cm by 8 cm tumour was found on his chest. I did not panic. I received the news with the realisation that this would transform his and our family’s karma. I immediately chanted for him to overcome this difficulty.
The doctor soon arranged for his treatment, 16 chemotherapy sessions over 3 months, to remove the cancerous cells. However, after 8 chemotherapy sessions within one-and-half month, all the cancerous cells were gone. The side effects were also minimal with him losing his hair and sense of taste but he was still able to eat and sleep well and even put on weight. During that period, he also successfully went through the autologous bone marrow transplantation.
He resumed work in August last year and the $500,000 medical fees were fully covered by insurance. During this period, I would chant at least five hours daily and continued to attend all activities, without wallowing in self-pity or sadness. I am grateful to the Gohonzon for protecting my son. The power of daimoku is indeed unfathomable.
Last year end, SSA Youth Division announced the target of 6000 youth to attend the March 16 Youth Gathering. President Toda has said, “First, decide what you will do and be determined to win without fail. The outcome hinges
on your resolve. This is the philosophy for success.” I chanted fervently for my youngest son to awaken to his mission and attend this meaningful youth gathering.
Even up till the actual day, my son did not say that he would attend. On that day, mystically, he offered to send me there. Not wanting to miss this opportunity, I chanted intensely in my heart. I felt proud and deeply grateful when he joined in the meeting and afterwards waited for me to finish tidying up the place!
SGI President Ikeda says in his guidance: “...Such (focused) prayer forges an indomitable spirit, kindles limitless hope, brings absolute peace of mind, and powers resolute progress. It is a source of unsurpassed happiness, and one of the most noble acts we can perform as a human being. We can definitely lead happy lives based on an unshakable conviction in faith and in accord with the ultimate law of the universe.”
Nichiren Buddhism has truly empowered me to bring up and nurture my children into capable people who can contribute to society. I am filled with immense gratitude.
I resolve to have a strong and unwavering conviction in the greatness of the Mystic Law no matter what, continue to propagate the Law far and wide, and persevere in my practice throughout my life.

I Won the Battle With Myself
As a child I was very shy and an introvert. I was not very good at sports and was ridiculed by my peers. Hence I did not have many friends. Besides I was slow in writing and reading. While my friends could finish their homework in one to two hours, I struggled to complete the same in seven hours, staying up beyond midnight every day. In spite of really liking Maths and Science and studying very hard, I could never score beyond C1 and C2 grades. This pained and confused me deeply and I would cry bitterly in front of my parents. My self- esteem went down and I lost confidence in my ability to do things.

In class six, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and severe dysgraphia, but my parents did not tell me, not wanting me to suffer. Both dyslexia and dysgraphia are neurological conditions in which the person has trouble reading and writing and gets confused easily with numbers and calculations. This was the time that my mother joined Nichiren Buddhism. She tried to introduce me to the practice but I resisted.
When I got to class nine, I felt completely burdened with academics. I could not pursue any of my hobbies and felt increasingly unhappy and frustrated. I started chanting regularly around this time. One day I suddenly realised that it was my fear of failure which was stopping me from doing anything other than studies. I decided not to let my fear stop me. I chanted really hard to push my boundaries, and to prove to myself that I could do anything!
I challenged myself by taking up two projects, one in Physics and the other in Environment even though my half-yearly exams were round the corner.
I won the National Award in the Science Fair for my Physics project and the international Global Teen Leader Award and Young Eco Hero Award for my project on Environment. I even did well in all my exams. This experience exposed me to the power of the Gohonzon! I now started believing that, yes, Nam-myoho- renge-kyo actually works.
It was around this time that my parents one day told me that I had dyslexia and dysgraphia. This came as a huge shock to me! A child with special needs! I could not think of myself as one.
When I travelled to New York to get my award, mystically we came to know of a

workshop being held in Harvard on “why dyslexics make better astrophysicists”. Seeing my keen interest in Astrophysics, my mother wrote to Harvard University requesting a seat in the workshop for me. Mystically again, I was the only international student allowed to participate in the event, and I saw how nine scientists with dyslexia were doing wonderful work in astrophysics at the Harvard University. The workshop was truly a transformative experience and for the first time I saw dyslexia not as a disability, but as a strength. I decided that I will not pity myself but use dyslexia as a stepping stone in my life.
I decided to take up Science in class 11. However, my teachers expressed serious doubts about my ability to cope and also because of my totally illegible writing. My teachers, in fact, would ask, “will he ever clear the board exams?” Honestly, I too felt anxious but this time I had the power

of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with me.
I started chanting regularly and strove to attend all discussion meetings and share my experiences. I introduced many friends to the practice and kept praying for them. At this time I was selected as a Hosukai (Young Lions Special Group, behind-the-scene group) member. Basing myself on daimoku, I took part in all the Hosukai meetings and the BSG General Meetings during classes 11 and 12. My Future Division (FD) leaders visited me regularly to study and chant with me. And I would read the Youthful Diary (which President Ikeda penned) every day
without fail.
My Struggles to Realise My Goals
In my studies, I was scoring low in both Maths and Computer Coding. The situation came to such a point that I thought I would fail in Maths. Then I pledged to be the best in Maths by the end of these two years. I persevered, basing myself on President Ikeda’s (whom I regard as my mentor in life and addressed as “Ikeda Sensei”) guidance which says, “What is defeat in life? It is not merely making a mistake, defeat means giving up on yourself in the midst of difficulties. What is true success in life? True success means winning the battle with yourself”.
Slowly, my resolve to do well became my prime focus — not only for my sake, but also to encourage other dyslexic children.
I am happy to report that I scored 97 per cent in my 12th board exams, scoring nearly 100 per cent marks in all subjects. From a student getting C2s and C1s to scoring A1s in all my subjects, I have come a long way.

But the journey was far from over. After the boards came the entrance exams for graduation courses and I was plunged into a sea of uncertainty. While all my friends had been taking coaching classes for years, I could never do so because of my slow speed. So, in my heart I felt that I could never clear the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for engineering as I had only a few weeks to prepare.
To my utter surprise however, I found that I could solve more than 90 per cent of the paper for both JEE mains and advance. My years of hard work paid off. I am happy to report that I cleared both JEE mains and advance, securing admission to the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). My institute is very supportive and focuses on my abilities and strengths, rather than my disabilities.
I truly understand what Ikeda Sensei means when he says that “happiness is not found in a tranquil life free of storms and tempests. Real happiness is found in the struggles we undergo to realise our goals, in our efforts to move forward”.
I am deeply grateful to Ikeda Sensei, my leaders, teachers and parents for their unflinching support. I am just 18 years old and this experience is just one drop in the ocean of my life I am building, and I will never stop building it. I am determined that my mission to spread hope will never subside and the fire to keep challenging myself will never go out.
(Adapted from the January 2018 issue of Value Creation, the monthly journal of Bharat Soka Gakkai.)

he Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu
officially opened (in 2013) on November 18 to commemorate the founding of the Soka Gakkai in 1930 and the 70th anniversary of the passing of first Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the Hall’s completion.
The Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu has since then been serving as a focal point of SGI’s global movement for kosen-rufu, or world peace. It signifies a new phase in the development of the SGI as an international movement of lay practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism.
Soka Gakkai President Harada explains the significance of SGI President Ikeda’s heart in establishing the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu as follows:

1. This Hall of the Great Vow is the crystallisation of the essence of the tenacious struggles of the first three Soka Gakkai presidents.
2. The fact that this Hall is being built in the area of Shinanomachi, Tokyo signifies the indomitable bond of the mentor-and- disciple between the first three Soka Gakkai presidents.
During second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda’s time, he specially dedicated a room as the Makiguchi memorial room with a deep sense of realisation as if his mentor, founder of Soka Gakkai Makiguchi Tsunesaburo, was taking the lead for kosen-rufu activities alongside him. President Ikeda, too, inherited this spirit

And now, in the Hall of the Great Vow, there is also a conference room dedicated to the three presidents. The three presidents practised in exact accord with the Lotus Sutra’s teachings, “...constantly reborn in company with their teachers”.
This Hall is the place where we learn about the spirit of the mentor and engrave it in our lives.
3. This Hall of the Great Vow is built for the people, an edifice for the people. It is a training place existing basically for any member to make a vow to carry out one’s own human revolution, to transform one’s karma, to strive for peace and happiness of all people and to achieve kosen-rufu.
This Hall is not a place for us to be “blessed” or a site for pilgrimage. This is a Hall for us to establish a vow and deepen our resolve to strive for kosen-rufu.
With the above understanding, let us reaffirm our renewed dedication to peace through the following excerpts from President Ikeda’s message sent to the commemorative gongyo meeting held on November 8, 2013, marking the completion of the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu, in Shinanomachi, Tokyo.

should without fail show the practitioners of the Lotus Sutra the kind of respect one would show to a Buddha”. (OTT, p 193)
The eight pillars on the north and south sides of this building, therefore, symbolise this eight-character passage that expresses the heart of the Lotus Sutra, which is also the Soka Gakkai spirit of treasuring each member as if they were a Buddha. I share this with you today for the sake of future generations.
There will probably be members who, because of health, age, or other reasons, will not be able to come to this hall. But please remember that all of us who have exerted ourselves for kosen-rufu and contributed to the development of today’s Soka movement have definitely accumulated boundless and immeasurable benefit and good fortune in our lives, and constructed a brilliant inner palace of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity that will endure across the three existences of past, present, and future. We all share the same benefit and joy. Please have complete confidence in this.
The heart of the great vow for kosen-rufu and the life-state of Buddhahood are one and the same. Therefore, when we dedicate our lives to this vow, we can bring forth the supreme nobility, strength, and greatness of our lives. When we remain true to this vow, the limitless courage, wisdom, and compassion of the Buddha flow forth from within us. When we wholeheartedly strive to realise this vow, the “poison” of even the most difficult challenge can be transformed into “medicine”, and karma transformed into mission.
This is the spirit of our infinitely worthy members. This is the hallmark of our invincible humanistic network of Soka.

As President Toda’s true disciple, I protected this Gohonzon in the Mentor-Disciple Hall of the former Soka Gakkai Headquarters building, and went out into the world to make the “fulfilment of the great vow for kosen-rufu through the compassionate propagation of the great Law” a reality.

President Makiguchi, who resisted wartime militarism and died in prison for his beliefs, had vowed to realise the Daishonin’s ideal of “establishing the correct teaching for the peace of the land”. Making his vow my own, I began and developed a diverse global network of people committed to the values of peace, culture, and education.
I chanted constantly before this Gohonzon, praying for the happiness, health, and longevity of all our members and for them to successfully carry out their human revolution and attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. And, looking towards the distant future of our movement, I continued my efforts to create a solid and unending flow of capable successors and took decisive leadership to thoroughly ensure the eternal perpetuation of the Law.
Our prayers encompass our local communities and the entire world.
This hall is a place where world citizens of the Mystic Law gather together in rich diversity to “chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the spirit of many in body but one in mind, transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim” (WND-1, p 217), just as the Daishonin describes in “The Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life”. It is a jeweled tower of unparalleled human harmony where members warmly support and encourage one another as they pledge anew to keep exerting themselves bravely and vigorously for the happiness and security of the people, the flourishing of society, the realisation of world peace, and the transformation of the destiny of all humankind.
The Daishonin writes: “This is my vow, and I will never forsake it!” (WND-1, p 281). Taking to heart the spirit embodied in this new hall, let us

In Commemoration of the 5th Anniversary of the Completion of Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu
promise one another, as fellow members of the Soka family, to always keep our vow for kosen- rufu burning brightly in our hearts. Let us be determined to overcome all obstacles and lead lives of indestructible victory and complete fulfillment as we make our way together in harmonious unity and high spirits!
In the message given on November 8, 2013, SGI President Ikeda said that, “I chanted constantly before this (Joju) Gohonzon, praying for the happiness, health, and longevity of all our members and for them to successfully carry out their human revolution and attain Buddhahood in this lifetime.” To date, President Ikeda’s heart for the members and kosen-rufu continues to burn brightly. Below are some excerpts from President Ikeda’s guidance infused with his profound thoughts from each visit to the Hall of the Great Vow.
I am delighted to be celebrating the anniversary of the Soka Gakkai’s founding (November 18, 2017) together with members throughout Japan and around the world.
I recently did gongyo and chanted daimoku in the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu (on November 13). I offered prayers for the happiness, victory, safety, and well-being of all our precious members who are striving tirelessly to open the way to a future of brilliant achievement. I also prayed for the ongoing vibrant development of the SGI.
The Soka Gakkai Headquarters complex continues to grow and develop, with construction now under way on the new Soka Gakkai World Seikyo Centre, a bastion of humanistic journalism. Additionally, construction on two new facilities—the Visitor’s Information Centre and the Visitor’s Reception

In Commemoration of the 5th Anniversary of the Completion of Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu
A stone monument engraved with the lyrics of the “Song of Human Revolution” stands in the northern courtyard of the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu. I fondly recall the original unveiling of the monument at the end of 1976 (at the old Soka Gakkai Headquarters). At that time, I took group photographs in front of the monument with representatives of the Soka Group, Gajokai, and Byakuren youth training groups (behind-the-scene support groups).
Youth are indeed the light of hope.
Together, we all sang with pride and joy the “Song of Human Revolution”, which contains the lines: “Since we are Bodhisattvas of the Earth, / we have a mission to fulfil in this world.”
In addition to the lyrics engraved on the monument are inscribed the words: “Dedicated to my mentor, Josei Toda, by his disciple, Daisaku Ikeda.”
Our movement of human revolution, carrying on this shared struggle of mentor and disciple, has grown exponentially since that time and is shining brilliantly around the world.
(From “Forging Ahead in the New Era” (22). Published on November 16, 2017 issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper.)
The Soka family, illuminating our blue planet with the light of hope, has started a new year. All over the globe, our members are enthusiastic and optimistic; they are the lead runners of the Bodhisattvas of the Earth of the new era.
My thoughts turn back to 1952, the first New Year we welcomed after the Soka Gakkai Joju Gohonzon1 was enshrined at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters the previous July.
Chanting before this Gohonzon, I set forth as President Toda’s young direct disciple to expand the youth division, devoting myself to the realisation of “kosen-rufu through the compassionate propagation of the great Law,”2 starting in Kamata, Tokyo, in the famous February Campaign.3

Sixty-five years have passed since then.
Recently (on January 3, 2017), I visited the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu [where the Soka Gakkai Joju Gohonzon is now enshrined]. I prayed earnestly for the health and happiness of all our precious members and the continued development, unity, and victory of our entire organisation.
Nichiren Daishonin declares: “This sutra [the Lotus Sutra] is superior to all other sutras. It is like the lion king, the monarch of all the creatures that run on the ground, and like the eagle, the king of all the creatures that fly in the sky.” (WND-1, p 929–30)
Fearless as lion kings, chanting the lion’s roar of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with our shared commitment for kosen-rufu, let us triumph with vibrant courage over every challenge this year. And like young eagles, let us vigorously transform the harsh winds of adversity into strength and make our victory song of kosen-rufu and life resound high into the sky, throughout the world, and into the future.
(From Forging Ahead in the New Era (1). Published on January 6, 2017 issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper.)
In the sunny early morning of New Year’s Day (2016), like a sublime celestial drama, the pale outline of the moon and the vivid white streak of a jet vapor trail adorned the bright blue sky over the Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu, where members would soon gather for gongyo meetings.

Once a plane takes off, it has to keep flying onward until it reaches its destination. In the same way, we must forge ahead unswervingly toward our great goal of attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime, navigating our way through any turbulence and living our lives to the fullest with courageous faith.
My mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, said: “If you strike a bell powerfully, it rings loudly; if you strike it weakly, it rings softly. A similar principle applies to the Gohonzon. It is the power of our own faith and practice that brings forth the power of the Buddha and the power of the Law and enables us to receive great benefit.” Nothing is more powerful than prayer infused with the great vow for kosen-rufu.
Let’s make this another year dedicated to fulfilling that great vow, vibrantly chanting Nam- myoho-renge-kyo so that capable individuals continue to emerge all around the globe and show brilliant actual proof of happiness.
(From “Creating the New Era” (1). Published on January 5, 2016 issue of the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai daily newspaper.)
In memory of my mentor, Josei Toda, on his birthday on February 11, I did gongyo and chanted daimoku at the Soka Gakkai Mentors Hall (in Shinanomachi, Tokyo). As I reflected on his noble life dedicated to fulfilling the great vow for kosen-rufu, boundless courage surged forth in my heart.
My mentor was an indomitable rock, a fearless lion. He was a person of fatherly compassion who loved young people and believed in their bright future.
In March 1958, Mr Toda passed the baton of kosen-rufu to his successors. A painting depicting that event, a gift from a member of Kanto Region, hangs in the exhibition room of the Mentors Hall. My wife and I looked at it reminiscently while we were there.
To this day, I can still hear Mr Toda’s impassioned call all those years ago to never let
up in our struggle against evil.
The mentor is like the mountain, and the
disciples are like the vibrantly blooming cherry blossoms. How overjoyed Mr Toda would surely be to see the amazing development of so many capable members leading victorious lives.
“The Parable of the Phantom City” (7th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra states: “[Those persons who had heard the Law] dwelled here and there in various Buddha lands, constantly reborn in company with their teachers.” (LSOC7, p 178)
Let us struggle and win with the spirit of oneness of mentor and disciple, ensuring that truth and justice prevail.

3. February Campaign: In February 1952, President Ikeda, then an adviser to Tokyo’s Kamata Chapter, initiated a dynamic propagation campaign. On August 6, 2018, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda wrote the final instalment of his serialised novel, The New Human Revolution, completing a colossal undertaking he had begun 25 years earlier, to the day. (Editor’s note: This final instalment was published on September 8, 2018 in the Seikyo Shimbun, the Soka Gakkai’s daily newspaper.) The 30-volume work charts the development of the Soka Gakkai, both in Japan and internationally. In essence, it is the story of the growth of a global movement for peace and individual empowerment built through “human revolution”—the process of individuals cultivating the “limitless inherent power” of the human spirit. This movement is referred to as kosen-rufu.

—The Conclusion of an Epic Undertaking

August 6 is a day of deep significance, the anniversary of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima that killed tens of thousands of civilians. President Ikeda’s choice to complete The New Human Revolution on this day reflects the novel’s deep concern for the peace of humanity.
President Ikeda began writing this 30-volume series not long after completing The Human Revolution, a work comprising 12 volumes that details the efforts of second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda to reconstruct the Soka Gakkai in the post-World War II era. That novel ends with President Ikeda’s inauguration as the Soka Gakkai’s third president in May 1960.
The New Human Revolution opens on October 2, 1960, as the 32-year old Soka Gakkai President Shin’ichi Yamamoto (the pseudonym of President Ikeda) embarks on his first overseas journey—to the United States, Canada and Brazil—to lay the groundwork for communicating the tenets of Nichiren Buddhism beyond the borders of Japan. Its opening lines set the theme: “Nothing is more precious than peace. Nothing brings more happiness. Peace is the basic starting point for the advancement of humankind.”
Underlying both novels is the principle, articulated in the foreword to the first work, that: “A great human revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of a nation and, further, will enable a change in the destiny of all humankind.”
The final installment (Volume 30 “Vow” Chapter, instalment 139) was published in the Seikyo Shimbun, on September 8, 2018, a day that marked the 61st anniversary of Josei Toda’s landmark Declaration for the Abolishment of Nuclear Weapons.

In the Introduction to the first volume of The New Human Revolution, Mr Ikeda contemplates the novel’s development, writing:
I expect The New Human Revolution to comprise 30 volumes by the time it is completed. It will certainly be a supreme challenge to finish writing it within my lifetime.
Nevertheless, only by fulfilling our mission in this life do we truly live. Goethe, Hugo and Tolstoy were all still working vigorously in their 80s, continuing to pen their convictions. I am 65 and still young. I have taken writing The New Human Revolution as my life’s work.
In total, The New Human Revolution comprises a staggering 6,469 installments, setting a record for the longest running series in a Japanese daily. The manuscript contains some 15,000 pages. The final installment (Volume 30 “Vow” Chapter, instalment 139) was published in the Seikyo Shimbun, on September 8, 2018, a day that marked the 61st anniversary of Josei Toda’s landmark Declaration for the Abolishment of Nuclear Weapons. This was an appeal, made before some 50,000 youth in Yokohama, Japan, that became the guiding principle of the Soka Gakkai’s peace movement.
At the basis of these novels is the profound mentor-disciple bond shared by the Soka Gakkai’s first three presidents— Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Toda and Ikeda. These works are the story of the shared struggle of these three leaders and the members of the movement. They make history, as in the author’s words, “the triumph of ordinary people as they illuminate the world with the humanism of Nichiren Buddhism and open a new page in the history of humankind”. When SGI President Ikeda started writing The New Human Revolution (NHR), he said, “In this novel series, I wish to outline the true path of mentor and disciple and secure the everlasting flow of kosen-rufu for the happiness and peace of all humanity.... [and] to clearly record the formula for the eternal development of the Soka Gakkai, the driving force for kosen-rufu.” Creative Life presents excerpts from the NHR with the hope that our readers will be inspired to read and study further this “textbook of faith”. Keeping the Spirit of Mentor and Disciple Alive Forever
From its very beginnings, the Soka Gakkai originated in the mentor and disciple relationship. That’s why to keep the Soka spirit vibrantly alive, the path of mentor and disciple must be communicated and perpetuated forever. This path begins from the disciple’s effort to learn the mentor’s spirit and practice.
Shin’ichi set to work on the task of making recordings of his mentor’s voice, collecting more than 160 tapes of Toda’s lectures and speeches. Hearing Toda’s voice, members renewed their commitment
and began to make major advances.

Shin’ichi Yamamoto believed that having the opportunity to view mementos of the mentor and other things that were related to him would play an important part in achieving this end. From immediately after Toda’s death, Shin’ichi made an all-out effort to collect objects embodying the spirit and the life of his mentor, the great leader of kosen-rufu. In fact, he had already started doing that while Toda was still alive.
It was Shin’ichi who insisted on making long-playing records of Toda’s lectures. In February 1951, he decided that it was important to preserve Toda’s voice forever. This was when 14 youths were studying the novel The Eternal City by British author Hall Caine (1853–1931) under Toda.
The novel’s hero, David Rossi, hears the voice on a gramophone of the elderly revolutionary leader who had been his teacher and had practically raised him. It was a last will and testament, calling out to his successor from his place of exile to carry on in his footsteps. Choking with tears, Rossi vows to dedicate himself to the revolution.
As he sat with the others studying The Eternal City led by Josei Toda, Shin’ichi Yamamoto thought to himself: “I want to record Mr Toda’s voice for posterity, too, on a phonograph record or in some other way.”
On New Year’s Day 1959, the first New Year after Toda’s death, representatives of Toda’s followers gathered at the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Shinanomachi
and listened to a phonograph record of his lectures.

Shin’ichi also felt the need to record moving images of Toda on film.
One of the milestone events being recorded was President Toda delivering his Declaration for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons (in September 1957).

It had been Shin’ichi’s idea. The passage of time can dilute the original spirit. In the Soka Gakkai, that would mean the destruction of kosen-rufu. Shin’ichi had worries and concerns that Toda’s spirit would diminish or fade.
The power of Toda’s voice transformed the atmosphere. Everyone sat up straight, as if Toda were actually there, and tears filled their eyes as they renewed their vows to strive in earnest.
As Dr N Radhakrishnan, a leading Indian scholar of Gandhian thought and former director of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (Gandhi Memorial Hall) in New Delhi, observed: “[A mentor] works like a detonator to explode the great power dormant in each person.”1
Shin’ichi immediately set to work on the task of making recordings of his mentor’s voice, collecting more than 160

film. This was all done based on Shin’ichi’s strong wish to preserve his mentor’s direct image for posterity and accurately communicate his true spirit.
First Soka Gakkai President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi raised the banner of kosen-rufu and, because of oppression by the Japanese military authorities, died in prison for his beliefs. On Life and Death
The chapter leader Isamu Ishizaki of Yonago Chapter, Tottori Prefecture1, was killed in a traffic accident. He was only 42. People in the community began to question the Soka Gakkai’s validity, asking why, if the teachings upheld by the organisation was correct and produced benefits, did its local leader die that way? More than a few Soka Gakkai members began wondering the same thing. Distrust mounted, causing many of them to be swayed by doubt and even to start criticising the Gakkai themselves. Shin’ichi flew there personally to offer encouragement to the members.
Shin’ichi then began to talk about the death of Isamu Ishizaki: “There may be some members who are asking why, given that he practised the Daishonin’s Buddhism, Mr Ishizaki was killed in an accident. The causes and effects inherent deep in our lives, the workings of our karma, are strict indeed. That is why, even if we practise the Daishonin’s Buddhism, the manner of our death will occur in any number of ways.
lives in complete accord with Nichiren Daishonin’s teaching: “Life is limited; we must not begrudge it. What we should ultimately aspire to is the Buddha land.” (WND-1, p 214) The existence of the Soka Gakkai depended on keeping that spirit of mentor and disciple alive forever among its members.

“There may be some who die giving their lives in the struggle to uphold Buddhism, like (Soka Gakkai founding president) Mr Makiguchi who died in prison for his beliefs. There may be some who die young as a result of illness or accidents. But when viewed through the eyes of faith, we find profound significance in their deaths. Those who dedicate their lives to working for kosen-rufu are Bodhisattvas of the Earth. They are followers of the Buddha. Life is eternal and, in light of the teaching of the Mystic Law, such people will absolutely attain Buddhahood.
“Furthermore, it is also guaranteed that the families of those who are dedicated to kosen-rufu to the very end will also be protected. I wish to declare that, as long as those left behind continue to persevere in faith, the good fortune and benefit accumulated through their loved ones’ dedication to kosen-rufu will pass on to them, and they will, without fail, enjoy unsurpassed happiness.

“Being without a spouse or partner doesn’t mean that we will never be happy. Prosperity and wealth also do not guarantee happiness. True happiness, absolute happiness, is only found when we awaken to the fact that our lives are the very entity of the Mystic Law, carry out our human revolution, and manifest the great life-state of Buddhahood through our Buddhist practice.
“We are born alone and we die alone. Only the Mystic Law has the power to protect us across the three existences of past, present, and future.
“If you devote yourselves fully to kosen-rufu, the Buddhas and bodhisattvas throughout the three existences and ten directions will protect you. Therefore, no matter what happens, no matter what others may say or how they may attack you, you must never be swayed or shaken. If you become cowardly and distance yourself from faith, you will only end up miserable.
“Life is eternal, but this present lifetime flashes by in an instant. I hope you will be aware of your mission in this life, devote yourselves to kosen-rufu, and accumulate abundant good fortune.
“If you should reach the end of your lives having done your very best and kosen- rufu in Yonago and Tottori hasn’t yet been realised, then there are still your children and grandchildren to carry on your work. Please raise them into wonderful successors of this noble endeavour. Please become the cornerstones for the expansion of kosen-rufu into the eternal future, and the source of our movement’s history.
“For my part, I will earnestly send you daimoku from Tokyo. Faith is a struggle between devilish forces and the Buddha. For the happiness and welfare of everyone living in Yonago, let us strive together with all our might and triumph over the devilish forces!”

Selected Excerpts of SGI President Ikeda’s Guidance
Part 3
Kosen-rufu and World Peace
Chapter 21
Valuing Each Individual— Part 1 [of 2]
Introduction:
Discussing why the Soka Gakkai has grown and developed to the extent it has, SGI President Ikeda once said to a group of youth division members:
The growth and development of the Soka Gakkai is the result of our sincere and continuous efforts to carry out the bodhisattva practice of valuing the person right in front of us. We show genuine respect and compassion for each individual, focus on their strong points, and draw out their Buddha nature. No matter what karmic adversity someone is facing, we empathise with them in their struggle, chant with them, and encourage them. We strive together to overcome life’s challenges and open the way to happiness.

Kosen-rufu means encouraging each individual and enabling them to attain Buddhahood. The happiness of each individual leads to a flourishing society and peaceful world.
“Valuing each individual”—this
simple guiding principle is where kosen- rufu begins and ends. It encompasses the life-affirming philosophy that each individual’s life is more precious than all the treasures of the universe. It shines with the peace philosophy that sees all people as Buddhas. It contains the key to unity grounded in the belief that each person is irreplaceable and possesses unique potential. It also pulses with the compassion and courage not to abandon anyone who is suffering.
In January 2015, President Ikeda called out to all members: “The dynamic development of the new era of worldwide kosen-rufu also starts from the actions of a single individual. It starts from standing up as an individual, speaking to one person, encouraging one person, igniting the torch of hope in the heart of one person.”1
This chapter features guidance on the theme of valuing each person presented on various occasions by SGI President Ikeda, who has opened the way for kosen- rufu by consistently doing just that.

President Ikeda’s Guidance:
From a speech delivered at the 56th Soka Gakkai Headquarters Leaders Meeting,Makiguchi Memorial Hall, Hachioji, Tokyo, January 6, 2006.
Valuing each person is the starting point of the Soka Gakkai. This is also the fundamental spirit of Nichiren Buddhism, which teaches that all people are irreplaceably precious and that everyone in the world innately possesses the noble Buddha nature.
Authoritarian leaders, on the other hand, ignore or denigrate the supreme value of the individual, seeing people only as faceless masses. This is because as far as such individuals are concerned, people are just a means to an end; they are objects, like weapons to be launched or resources to be spent. Power-hungry individuals cleverly manipulate people to feed their own greed and ambition, seeking to gain total control over the whole.
The Soka Gakkai’s approach is the exact opposite. This is because the purpose of kosen-rufu is the happiness of each individual. We believe in the infinite potential of every human being, strive to help each person awaken to and reveal that potential, and work to expand the circle of those who share this commitment. This has been the history of our people’s movement to this day.
The individual comes first, and then the whole. Everything starts with the individual, and with individuals strongly uniting. Losing sight of this essential point will bring terrible consequences. Anyone who sees the Soka Gakkai and its members as nothing but a tool for advancing some personal or organisational agenda, just like the

21.2 Treasuring Each Individual Is the Spirit of the Buddha
Introduction:
The Lotus Sutra presents the parable of the three kinds of medicinal herbs and two kinds of trees, describing how rain falls impartially on all vegetation, enabling each plant to flower and bear fruit in its own unique fashion. President Ikeda explains that this teaching lies at the heart of the Lotus Sutra’s humanistic philosophy of treasuring each individual.
President Ikeda’s Guidance:
Adapted from the dialogue
The Wisdom of the Lotus Sutra, vol 2, published in Japanese in
November 1996.
In the great work of Buddhist literature that is the Lotus Sutra, the parable of the three kinds of medicinal herbs and two kinds of trees is of particular interest, because it stresses the diversity of living beings. It is the only one of the seven parables of the sutra to articulate this theme. At the same time, it highlights the all-embracing nature of the Buddha’s compassion.
The Buddha’s compassion is completely impartial; it does not discriminate. The Buddha sees all people

their uniqueness.
The differences among people
are not a reason for favouring some and hating others. The Buddha loves, rejoices at, and affirms the individuality of each person. That is the compassion and wisdom of the Buddha.
It is important to realise that the Buddha’s preaching is grounded in his recognition of the diversity of human beings.
The Lotus Sutra clarifies the means by which real individuals, with their unique circumstances, personalities, and capacities, can gain enlightenment. It reveals the path to attaining Buddhahood, without ever straying from the reality of each individual’s life.
Treasuring each individual is the heart of the people-oriented philosophy, or humanism, of the Lotus Sutra. It is the spirit of the Buddha. The Lotus Sutra’s fundamental aim of enabling all people to attain enlightenment also starts with valuing each person, and can be realised only by practising this in every aspect of our lives and endeavours.
It is easy to speak abstractly of love for one’s fellow human beings or love for humanity, but it can be very challenging to have love and compassion for actual individuals.
A character in one of Dostoevsky’s novels makes the observation: “The more I love mankind in general, the less I love human beings in particular, separately, that is, as individual persons.”2 And a character in another of his novels states: “In an abstract love of humanity it is nearly always only oneself whom one loves.”3
The Soka Gakkai, maintaining its focus onactualindividuals, hasdedicateditself to helping each person realise absolute

21.3 Each Person’s Life Is a Treasure Tower as Vast as the Universe
Introduction:
In “On the Treasure Tower”, Nichiren Daishonin explains that the treasure tower, which appears in “The Emergence of the Treasure Tower” (11th) chapter of the Lotus Sutra, is a symbol of each individual’s life. Citing a passage from this writing, President Ikeda discusses the profound humanism of Buddhism, which sees the supreme dignity and worth inherent in all people.
President Ikeda’s Guidance:
From a speech delivered at
an SGI-Germany and SGI-Austria joint executive conference, Germany, June 5, 1991.
What is the self? What is the true nature of our existence?
In a letter to his disciple Abutsu-bo, Nichiren Daishonin writes:
At present the entire body
of the Honorable Abutsu is composed of the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space. These five elements are also the five characters of the daimoku [Myoho-renge-kyo].4 Abutsu-bo is therefore the treasure tower itself, and the treasure tower is Abutsu- bo himself. (WND-1, p 299)
This letter was written in response
to a question from Abutsu-bo about the meaning of the treasure tower that appears in the Lotus Sutra.

Having emerged from the earth,
it hangs suspended in the air and is adorned with the seven kinds of treasures—gold, silver, lapis lazuli, seashell, agate, pearl, and carnelian— and decorated with countless banners and other embellishments. It also emits a wonderful fragrance.
What does this magnificent treasure tower symbolise? It is the Buddha nature, or the life state of Buddhahood. The Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai says that its colossal size indicates that it contains all the Buddha’s practices (causes) and all the resulting virtues he attained (effects).6 The fact that it is made of and adorned with treasures signifies the majesty, nobility, and splendour of the life state of Buddhahood.
In contemporary terms, it is a symbol of the dignity of life. True dignity means having absolute, irreplaceable value. Our lives, which inherently possess the world of Buddhahood, are of absolute value. That is the meaning of the term “treasure tower”.
The Daishonin praises Abutsu-bo, who we could say represents all ordinary people, most highly. Because Abutsu-bo believes in the Mystic Law, the Daishonin teaches him, he himself is the magnificent treasure tower. In this way, the Daishonin awakens him to the truly wonderful life state possessed by those who uphold the Mystic Law.
Buddhism is a thoroughly egalitarian and democratic teaching. It teaches that each individual is incomparably worthy of respect.
Nichiren Buddhism enables us, just as we are, to attain the life state of Buddhahood. This is affirmed by the words “Abutsu-bo is . . . the treasure

21.4 Everyone Has a Mission
Introduction
Shakyamuni always treasured each person to the utmost. He earnestly sought to guide them to enlightenment, never giving up on anyone. Citing one such episode, President Ikeda explains that we each have a precious mission that only we can fulfil, and stresses the importance of exerting ourselves steadily in our Buddhist practice, irrespective of our background or innate talents.
President Ikeda’s Guidance:
From a speech delivered at the 18th SGI General Meeting, Taplow Court, Maidenhead, United Kingdom,
June 11, 1994.
I would like to share a story about an ordinary person who enjoyed a beautiful mentor-disciple relationship with Shakyamuni—a story demonstrating that everyone has a mission in life.
I am referring to the Buddha’s disciple Chudapanthaka, who was famous for his bad memory. He was so forgetful that he couldn’t even remember his own name. The Daishonin describes him as “the most forgetful person in the whole continent of Jambudvipa [the entire world]”. (WND-2, p 657)
Chudapanthaka had joined the community of Shakyamuni’s disciples, together with his older brother. But in

spite of striving his hardest, he made no progress in his Buddhist practice and was ridiculed by the other disciples for his slowness.
One day, even his own brother gave up on him and sent him away, telling him that he had no hope of succeeding as a disciple and should just return home.
Recalling that day later, Chudapanthaka said that he had stood there discouraged, but still cherishing the hope that there might be some teaching he could master.
Just then, his teacher, Shakyamuni, appeared at his side, gently touched his head, and led him back by the hand to the place where the others were practising.
Having been filled with despair, Chudapanthaka must have felt great joy at his teacher’s compassionate kindness.
Though everyone else had rejected him, his teacher accepted and understood him, believed in him and cared for him. Chudapanthaka found himself filled with new resolve.
Later, Shakyamuni taught Chudapanthaka in a way that enabled him to deepen his life state while joyfully serving his fellow disciples. Chudapanthaka faithfully attended Shakyamuni and persevered in making sincere efforts, just as his teacher instructed. By doing so, he triumphed.
In the Lotus Sutra, he and his brother

In a letter to one of his disciples [the lay priest Nishiyama] that he composed in June 1275, Nichiren Daishonin writes:

memorize a teaching of fourteen characters even in the space of three years, and yet he attained Buddhahood. Devadatta, on the other hand, had committed to memory sixty thousand teachings but fell into the hell of incessant suffering. These examples exactly represent the situation in the world in this present latter age. Never suppose that they pertain only to other people and not to yourselves. (WND-1, p 602)
What makes us respectworthy as practitioners? Not education, social position, or inherent abilities, but striving tirelessly to support others and help them become happy. That dedicated faith and humanity cannot be overlooked. Such a person is the noblest of all—a person who will attain Buddhahood.
21.5 Empathy Is the Essence of the Soka Gakkai Spirit
Introduction
Referring to a deeply compassionate letter of encouragement Nichiren Daishonin sent to his disciple Toki Jonin, whose wife, the lay nun Toki, was ill, President Ikeda highlights the noble spirit of empathy that serves as the basis for valuing each individual and showing care and concern for those who are suffering.

I am as concerned about the illness of your wife, the lay nun Toki, as though it were I myself who is ailing, and day and night I pray to the heavenly gods that she will recover. She has supported the votary of the Lotus Sutra just as she has supplied oil to the lamps, or piled earth around the roots of the trees. I am beseeching the gods of the sun and moon that they will guard her life even at the cost of their own!

The Daishonin always showed great care and concern for those working hard away from the limelight. Learning of the lay nun Toki’s illness, he says he feels her suffering as his own, and is praying
