TRANSCRIPT LISTENING ( a )

My friend, Aminudin, died last year. He died at the age of 47. His friends usually called him Udin. He left me
his record player and his collection of gramophone records. Udin spent a lot of money on records. He bought one
or two new records every week. He never went to the cinema or to the theatre. He stayed at home every evening
and listened to music. He often lent records to his friends. Sometimes they kept them. He lost many records in
this way.

TRANSCRIPT LISTENING ( b ) UNIT 4

It was Sunday. I never get up early on Sundays. I sometimes stay in bed until lunch time. I looked out of the
window. It was dark outside. ‘What a day !’ I thought. ‘It’s raining again.’ Just then, the telephone rang. It was
my ount Lucy. ‘I’ve just arrived by train,’ she said. I’m coming to see you.’ ‘But I’m still having breakfast,’ I
said. ‘What are you doing?’ she asked. ‘I’m having breakfast,’ I repeated. ‘Dear me,’ she said. ‘Do you always
get up so late ? It’s one o’clock !’

Task 1
I want to tell you a story from West Sumatra. It is very famous. Who can guess the title? Well, .... The

title is Maling Kundang. What is it tell us about? Well, right it’s about anak durhaka. What is anak
Durhaka in English? Yes,.... disobidient boy.

Now listen carefuly. A long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatra, a woman and
her son lived. They were Malin Kundang and her mother. His mother was a single parent . OK, Who
knows the meaning of single parents? Right,.. single parent means satu orang tua or Janda (a widow).
His Mother become a widow because Malin Kundang's father had passed away when he was a baby.
Well,.. students do you know the meaning of passed away?. ... Any body know? The synonim of passed
away is died. Therefore, Malin Kundang had to live hard with his mother.

OK, Let me continue my story...
Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong boy. He usually went to sea to catch fish. After
getting fish he would bring it to his mother, or sold the caught fish in the town.
One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing, he saw a merchant ship which was being raided by a
small band of pirates. Does any body know the meaning of merchant ship? Who knows ? OK, ...
check your dictionary ! Yes, right, Kapal dagang . It was being raided by a band of pirates. What does
band of pirates mean? A Band of.... means a group of...... . Pirates means persons who attack and rob
ship at the sea. Then he helped the merchant. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the
pirates. The merchant was so happy and thanked to him. In return the merchant asked Malin Kundang
to sail with him. To get a better life, Malin Kundang agreed. He left his mother alone.

Well, every body.... Do you still enjoy my story? What happened next?

Many years later, Malin Kundang became wealthy. He was very rich. He had a huge ship and was

helped by many ship crews loading trading goods. Anybody knows the mening of huge ? Yes, right.

Very big. Perfectly he had a beautiful wife too. When he was sailing his trading journey, his ship

landed on a beach near a small village. The villagers recognized him. The news ran fast in the town;
“Malin Kundang has become rich and now he is here”.

Then everybody, ....
An old woman ran to the beach to meet the new rich merchant. She was Malin Kundang’s mother. She

wanted to hug him, released her sadness of being lonely after so long time.

But what happened,

Unfortunately, when the mother came, Malin Kundang who was in front of his well dressed wife and
his ship crews denied meeting that old lonely woman. For three times his mother begged Malin
Kundang and for three times he yelled at her. At last Malin Kundang said to her "Enough, old woman!
I have never had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly woman!" After that he ordered his crews to set sail.
He would leave the old mother again but in that time she was full of both sadness and angriness.

Ok, Students, guess... would his mother be angry at him?
Finally, enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn't apologize.
Malin Kundang just laughed and really set sail.
In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for
Malin Kundang to apologize. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship. He fell on a small island. It
was really too late for him to avoid his curse. Suddenly, he turned into a stone.

Well students, this is the end of the story. Do you enjoy the story? I want to give some questions.

The Magic Candle

One day a young wanderer got lost in a wood. Suddenly he saw a light from an old hut. He
knocked on the door and an old woman opened it. She was crying. She said that the devil had stolen her
magic candle. The candle could grant anything she asked. The wanderer asked her where the devil
lived. ``In a castle not far from here, ”said the old woman.

The wanderer went to the castle. There he found the devil, but he was old and weak. Therefore
when the wanderer grabbed the magic candle from the devil`s table and ran away,he couldn`t chase
him.

But the wanderer was not a kind man. He didn`t return the candle to the old woman, but kept it
for himself. He lit the candle and made a wish, ``I want to go far away from here. ”Suddenly the genies
appeared and took him to a beautiful palace. There was party in the palace. The wanderer wanted to
make some money. So he lit the candle again and wished for some jewellery. He sold them to the
guests and was soon making a lot of money. Then the Princess came to buy the jewellery, but there was
nothing left. The wanderer fell in love with her and asked her to marry him.``Yes”,said the kind
Princess and they got married the next day. In his happiness,the wanderer told the princess about his
adventure and the magic candle. Hearing that,the princess got very angry.At night she lit the candle and
wished that the wanderer disappear.

In the morning the wanderer awoke and found himself back in his ugly house in the village.
